Claremont wrote the quintessential characterization Wolverine. Logan fought an internal struggle between his inner morality, the Samurai, and his inner animal, the feral beast. Claremont highlighted this well when he brought Sabertooth into picture as Wolverine's arch-enemy and polar opposite. Victor Creed was, in a lot of ways, the same character as Logan, except Creed had no morality. Creed embraced his feral blood-lust side; and he chided Logan for not embracing his.
It kind of always bugged me that no other writer inherently understood that complex aspect about Wolverine, except for maybe a couple others. (I remember Scott Lobdell and Greg Rucka kinda getting it, but it's been awhile.) Logan's not a simple mindless killing machine who remorselessly kills for no reason, like most modern writers characterize him. At least, he's not supposed to be.

100% my friend. That is what has always made Logan an interesting character. He has a big heart but is tormented with turmoil. The definitive heroes journey. Him keeping his inner beast in check was always a shinning point, the idea to make him a "Ronin" really helped make this shine, that's why his first solo series is highly sought after and why this follow up arc and anytime he is in madripoor is amazing. The only other writer that could kick ass on Logan for me was Larry Hama.

@@ChrisMacPresents Yeah, Larry's Wolverine run was good too.
Speaking of Hama, I just finished re-reading his entire run on GI Joe; over 300 issues. It took me over a year. I think Larry is one of those rare writers who simply has endless stories to tell.

@@SamGuthrie1977 Definitely. Anytime I come across his time on GI Joe I grab those copies. Same with the OG Marvel Transformers. They're both exciting and engaging!

@@ChrisMacPresents I like the original Marvel Transformers too. It's especially good when Simon Furman starts writing it. I think that was in the #50's.
