Brilliant review. Byrne's run was my favourite as a kid. Mostly the post Secret Wars with She-Hulk.
What's your favorite run of Fantastic Four? Check out the full video!
1) Lee/Kirby 2)Byrne 3) Millar/Hitch 4) Hickman/various I really don't like anything Millar has written except his Fantastic Four but I still hate what he did with Aunt Petunia.
@afroscifizianzcomix7836 excellent choices my friend 🤙 I'll be diving in Brynes run and some of George Perez's art era soon
Byrne was such an incredible talent. The industry desperately needs another John Byrne today. I wish there were modern creators that could sell a book on their name alone. There are a handful, but not nearly enough.
Agreed, the craft is truely suffering. I think it doesn't help how fast companies want products pushed nowadays as well. It's insane, doesn't give artists a chance to breath.

Hmm. I actually enjoyed this. This does feel like the same Kitty I read during the Claremont era but older and more cynical. I do see your point of view though. In my opinion this is a comic that appears to be written for teenage girls. It is not a bad comic and there aren't any noticeable pacing issues. It just lacks the action you would expect from a X-Men comic. I love the art and the only reason I gave this book a chance is because Eve Ewing managed to salvage the Black Panther book after the awful (in my opinion) Coates and Ridley runs. For that feat she deserves my respect and I will take a interest in what she is writing.
@afroscifizianzcomix7836 I'm glad you enjoyed it friend 🤙 I suppose I am holding out hope for what Matthew Rosenberg did on the latter half of Uncanny X-Men. I couldn't put that book down. It felt like a reinessance of sorts.

Good review. I really enjoyed this. I think the revelation that the Shi-ar from issue #1 were David 's brothers in disguise was a awesome plot twist. I see your point of view when you say you wanted to see the Avengers in their prime. Jonathan Hickman writes with a science fiction sensibility. He likes to have cutting edge science with characters who age. I can tell he is influenced by the NEW UNIVERSE. His current Ultimate books takes place in real time with no sliding timescale. If he set it in the present he wouldn't be able to have such high stakes for the characters without it effecting current continuity. I look forward to your reviews of the next two issues. 👌👍
Thanks for stopping by and checking out the Vid homeslice 🤜🤛 I'll have to check out Hickmans Ultimate book. I'm glad Marvel is allowing the characters to age. The sliding time scale bit has become a bit stagnant. I am hoping for a bit more Avenger/Xeno Action in the issues to come
@ChrisMacPresents Me too👍👌All the current Ultimate books are set in "real" time including the books not written by him. Ultimate Spider-Man is the only book written by Hickman. You should check out Ultimate Invasion mini series( Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch) for all the world building first.

I might have to hunt those down. I wanted to enjoy Age of Ultron, but sadly, that quickly went off the rails
It's been years since I read House of M. I remember it having the typical problems of its day: excessive decompression, Bendis dialogue, and comics-trying-to-be-a-movie storytelling. That said, House of M is miles better than anything Marvel publishes today, which says a lot about today's comics.
Agreed. At least during this era, though you could tell traditional story tellign was shifting, or dying out, it was at least still relatively entertaining to read.
I got X-factor #73.😀👍
NOICE! This is definitely the golden age of X-Factor

Thanks for getting into House of M. It's one of the last comic book storylines from the 2000s i actually care about. And Happy Thanksgiving!
@@Supertron1 Anytime homeslice 🤙 I've been trying to fill the holes in my collection during the Claremont era and realized I was butting into House of M, so I'm like, it's time to dive headlong into the event. House of M was also one of the last Marvel events I enjoyed as well. I really wanted to like Age of aultron, but it went of the rails quickly.
What are your thoughts on House of M? Check out the full video!
Yeah, Alan Davis drew all of Claremont's Excalibur run if I remember right, then came back for a few years later as writer/artist for another run. I'm with you on the digital coloring. I think it has a tendency to visually overcomplicate what should be simple drawings on paper. One thing that made comics cool is that they should be relatively simple to create. When they introduce too much technology into the process of making comics, they begin to lose their relatability and charm.
@SamGuthrie1977 Eggsactly! It loses the one thing that's important in Comics, THE HUMAN ELEMENT. Digital should be an aid, not the whole process
What did everyone snag today?
While listening to your review, it dawned on me that modern Marvel comics like this try WAAAY too hard to appeal to the current generation of young people, with the references to social media and all that other junk.
Agreed. Comics have always had corny references here and there, but not to this degree that it completely dilutes the story with no substance rather than making some memorable
Your thoughts? Full video on the main channel!
I can't figure out if these new writers don't get superhero comics, or if they're intentionally writing like this just to troll the fans.
@SamGuthrie1977 At this point, it wouldn't surprise me if it was the latter lol
If you look at the back of the card for the original Toy Biz '89 Batman, the figure that is pictured is a dead ringer for that McFarlane fig. The sculpt is incredibly similar, which makes me believe that McFarlane used that photo as the basis for its design. It would be nice to see McFarlane produce figures more accurate to the actual Toy Biz or Kenner Batman movie figures at this same scale with Michael Keaton's likeness, but maybe they can't without running afoul of Hasbro or whatever. It's not like they can't use Keaton's likeness, considering the DC Multiverse figures they've made. Also, the cape on this figure is pretty bad. There's too much fabric and it's cut really weirdly. I don't know how they could still be having trouble with good-looking fabric capes.
@glennwelsh9784 I wonder if the cape may vary on each figure. This one behaved itself quite nicely. I'm also glad he is using bendy wire capes on the Multiverse Figures. I am over those bulky heavy plastic capes lol
Comig soon to a TH-cam near you!
What's your favorite Conan arc? Check out the full video!
Chris, if you get the chance you should review some Conan the King issues too. I was really into that series. I thought it was so cool seeing a middle-aged Conan who'd developed some wisdom but could still physically kick ass if he needed to. It was also interesting seeing him carrying responsibility as a king, husband, and father. It showed aspects of the character we didn't get to see in Conan the Barbarian.
I'll have to see what I can find! The only other books I found at the garage sale, were the magazine sized Savage Sword of Conan issues. I want to go through the regular comic sized ones before diving into these. Thank you for the insight homeslice!

Man, it's great to finally have a version of this figure in existence. I agree it would have been cool if they had given the figure the Toybiz action feature and the hand molded to hold accessories, but you know how is. Those things were made with kids in mind, whereas this figure was designed for adult collectors.

What are your thoughts on this arc? Check out the full video!
Yeah this was a seminal X-Men story. I know a lot of fans like Hickman, but I think history will show that the official end of the X-Men was the Krakoa era. The spirit of the book was fundamentally broken and the characters seemed nothing like what Claremont and other writers established. I hope I'm wrong. I hope the X-Men can one day turn it around and be heroic and likeable again, but I'm not holding my breath.
Aside from certain writers making the X-Men more quirky and popculture jokey, I really feel the decline of the Mutants started with the MCU. Fox and Marvel Studios wouldn't play ball and they started shoving the X-Men aside in favor of the Inhumans. Really made the books during that time unbearable. The only shining lights during this period was Lemire's Old Man Logan, Kelly Thompson's Gambit & Rogue/Mr. & Mrs. X, the latter half of Matthew Rosenberg's Uncanny X-Men as well as Ed Brisson's Cable & X-Force runs.
@@ChrisMacPresents You're not wrong. I think the movie and TV thing has hurt comics altogether. Also, I feel like the X-Men have been becoming less objectively heroic for decades now. It started when Claremont brought Magneto into the X-Men for awhile, then over the years, it became almost anyone who was a mutant was an X-Man, regardless of their actions. But I felt like Krakoa was the explicit watershed moment where they officially became segregationists and Xavier's dream died. (Nevermind the fact that a bunch of the mutants on Krakoa hated each other and would never have lived alongside each other. Also, nevermind that a bunch of those same mutants had humans who were friends and loved-ones; they wouldn't have turned their back on them. Krakoa made no sense to anyone had read previous eras of X-Men comics.) I see what you're saying, though. It's not as if X-Men comics were great before Hickman and Krakoa. They weren't. But I think Krakoa was the point of no return.
@SamGuthrie1977 Agreed. I hated it more that they did the whole bit that Mutants who weren't restored from M-Day were forced to go by their human name until Apocalypse slayed them in an arena. Then they we're allowed to don a Mutant name. Or how they called themselves cowards if they didn't subject themselves to dying/resurrection. I think Hickman had an interesting concept and, I think, intended to show why Krakoa didn't work. However, the rest of the writers wanted to do their cutesy BS, and that's what led him to leave because they dragged it on and on. Another thing x-writers need to learn is, as you said, because you're a mutant doesn't mean you're an x-man. Granted, it doesn't mean you assist like Stevie, original Motia, and Val Cooper, all NON-MUTANTS. I mean, ffs, Magneto wanted Stevie as his second in command when he led the New Mutants, and I thought that was great. IDK what the solution is. Claremont said at one point that he wanted to get a roster to continually grow and rotate. That's what I liked about the post-Siege Perilous. Everyone was scattered while Banshee and Forge tried to rebuild the X-Men, which later evolved nicely into X-Factor, X-Force, and then Generation X. I know for a fact they can't go back to the well of X-Mansion, and Utopia was an interesting concept, but then they add the problem of too many Mutants in one place. The early teams worked because stories would crossover, but they were all over the world (Excalibir). I do believe, if they'd stuck to the end of Rosenbergs Uncanny... that'd been a good step in the right direction. Cyclops is essentially humbled at the cost of an eye. He chooses Jean over Emma. Been neat to see him and Jean ride off into the sunset like Claremont had intended with Madelyn, Storm lead again, or Kitty lead the X-Men and setting up teams all over the globe etc. And make the books serious melodramas instead of tongue and cheek books relying on 'member berries. These Rise from the Ashes books could have been "IT" but the new writers have no concept of what made the X-Men the powerhouse they had once been.
@@ChrisMacPresents ...and remember how a bunch of the X-Men used to have love interests that were human? Zelda and what's her name (the girls that Beast and Iceman dated in the late 60's), Lee Forrester, Opal, Mariko, Trish Tilby, etc. What about humans like Fred Duncan? I was thinking about Wolverine, for example. Why would he turn his back on close human friends like Mac and Heather Hudson, and Puck? Yet willingly live alongside mutant genocidal villains like Apocalypse and Sinister in segregation? I know fans keep saying Hickman had a plan, but it's stuff like that which makes me wonder if he simply had very little idea about the characters and property he was writing. Also, I get the impression he's never written traditional moral heroes. If I remember right, he mostly turned the Avengers into a team that was sacrificing alternate universes in a Machiavellian fashion to save themselves, and I remember his Secret Warriors being mostly about a cast of self-serving jerks operating in a moral gray zone. I don't remember at the end of those runs good winning or there being any kind of moral comeuppance. I could be wrong, but I'm unconvinced he was going somewhere with Krakoa and that there was going to be some kind of lesson learned. If so, it would be the first of that type of writing I've ever seen from him. I think Hickman is big on presentation, ideas, world building, and stuff like that - and poor on storytelling, especially with established characters. And not to go off-topic, but there was that one issue with Apocalypse on Krakoa giving hugs and crying. I was like wtf. I do agree with you on the cutesy writing, though. If possible, Krakoa got worse with even lesser talented writers after Hickman. That self-impressed, immature, annoying humor is pure cringe. I think it's typically written by writers who have no real life experience and very little real-life social interactions with other real people. It's usually written by some Gen Z writer who's lived most of their life on social media and really wants to be working on TV shows, not comics. I actually thought Rosenberg's run wasn't that bad, either.
That's why I've canceled all my pull lists. After decades of regularly collecting, I'm done with it. When I got to my LCS or shop for books, I lean more into back issues now. Once in a while, I'll come across something new and exciting, but it's very few and far between anymore. Comics need some sort of reinessance, but I doubt we'll see it anytime soon. I know there are tons of indy publishers out there, and I hope they have success. However, we need an injection like Image did in the 90s.
Portacio's male characters always looked awesome because they were so jacked. That Scott Summers never skipped leg day.
That's what made the 90s so awesome. Everyone looked swol, and you did not want to cross them, lol.

@@jamesmoss3424 underrated comic arc. I enjoyed that they made Cable into Nathan Summers
@@ChrisMacPresents I agree. 😀👍
What did everyone snag today?
Awesome review, buddy. I really want to go back and do some research on this. It's interesting how they eventually came full circle by explaining in Cable #-1 that Cable himself accidentally activated Apocalypse's ship when he went back in time to destroy Apocalypse. My understanding was always that Rob Liefeld originally didn't intend for Cable to be Nathan Summers, the glowing eye and mechanical arm were supposed to just be cybernetic. I do remember a figure reviewer on some website claiming that he was originally supposed to be a future version of Cannonball, but i don't know if that's true.
@Supertron1 making Cable Nathan Summers was a good call. Really added to the X-Factor and Summers mythos. Also, bailing on Sam being an X-Ternal was bad, in my opinion. Would have been an interesting next step other than him moving to the X-Men. Then again, I highly disliked Sunspot becoming a villain leading A.I.M.
