My niece drives an older Honda CRV. When she bought it she had timing belt replaced and of course the harmonic balancer was removed and replaced in the course of the service. Within a year the harmonic balancer came loose while she was up at school in Northern California. She took it to a local shop. They said she was lucky the crank was intact though the balancer was shot. Luckily this occurred while she was in a parking lot just starting the car. $550 later she was back on the road. 6 months later, at a new school in Southern California she's on the on ramp to get on the high way and she loses her power steering and thinks it's locked up. She manages to slow down and get the car to the shoulder. Takes it to the local shop in Southern California and we find out the balanacer has come off again. This time it took out the key slot in the crankshaft thus scrapping the crank. The required repairs are more than the car is worth which sucks as she's working her way through college on minimum wage. Had this happened on a different stretch of the highway we could have lost more than the crank. While I realize this is standard practice for many shops I really wish it hadn't been done in either case on her car. It may work 99% of the time but clearly it doesn't always work. For what it's worth, I live in central California and was unable to see the car after each of these events so I don't know if loctite was used or if it would have made the difference.
I took a perfectly good runing CRV in for a timing belt change too and not the car is totally effed. Been better off not doing anything and prolly would have lasted for years more.
Typically when they do this dumb shit on Honda engines it'll leave an impression on the crank face. The impression causes the crank pulley not to run true, causing wobbling of the pulley.
You could try to get another CRV, hide a camera so it records the work they do. It's a pretty cheap setup to do. $200 you could have 3 cameras hidden recording just in case one fails or the view is obstructed. Also have someone else bring in the car so they don't suspect you. Or try to see if you can see into the shop, they use a camera with a good zoom lens.
So how do you know it is 245 N·m for example? The biggest problem is that you may break the bolt and then it is not going to be pretty for your customer when they go somewhere else later on.
Dont do it on a BMW or you will be buying a crankshaft. The torque directly affects bearing clearance on some bmws. Over torquing the bolt will deform the crank and seize the front main bearing.

Do that on a Mazda Series crank. You will be buying a new engine. As it has no crank key. You will hit that starter and drive the Valves right through the pistons.
you have to torq it for a reason, not for quick fastning, the torq is for the right tightning because of vibration between cranck and pully, if it is not tighten well the pully wil "walk" over the shaft and possibly damage the keyway/ridge on the cranckshaft and a new pully is after the damage hard to dismantle and fitt. be warned. if it is a fuel/gasoline engine the forces are not that hard, but if it is a diesel or gasoil engine take youre time to fit and torq wel. on a 2 liter diesel opel/vauxhall there is a torq of 340 Nm for the pully, this engine is known by problems for misalignment of pully cranckshaft and valveshaft with a lot of starting and power problems, the timingbeltpully wil slight a little later deu to vibrations and the engine runs with difrent kind of obd signs or won't start at all with a falls positief of camshaft sensor not correct. the ECU measure a greater difrence between the time the sensors must see eachother and the engine fails starting, (broken or loose timingbelt safety) it is not possible to tighten this by hand, you have to lock the cranckshaft, and the pully at the same time otherwise it wil change by fastning and you have to start over again with new parts. it took me a couple of days to find out what was rong with the car, sometimes it starts and run fine, and sometimes it would not start at all. 10 times trying 10 times ok, 1 time trying no one home.

Agree completely with your assessment and tightening. As long as you get the bolt tensioned to below its elastic limit and USE a THREADLOCKER, that bolt ain't gonna loosen under normal circumstances. The bolt is just holding the pulley/balancer on.... no axial loads to speak of; and radial loads are handled by the woodruff key.
We owned a dealership for 25 years, and our mechanic for the entire time we owned the place would laugh at me (A Young ASE certified mechanic) whenever I questioned what he was doing or told him he was doing something wrong. He said, i can't really explain it to you because I'm not a teacher. He didn't even know how to read!! He always got things done though, and boy could he take a motor apart and put it back together with his eyes blind folded. A real Chevy guy! Didn't even need a manual for anything.... Just his tools and some time. One time he took me out in a 800hp Nova. (Probably 1000hp, Jimmy always tended to lie) and I swear we went from 30mph to over 150mph in a couple seconds. We were on bad tires and the tires burned up the road until about 80mph when he really hooked and started moving. At first i was like, "Okay, it's got more torque than my Lexus. I couldn't spin until 80mph" THEN hr actually hooked and the Nos started to hit. Oh my god, it was the most intense car moment of my life. A new world became known to me that day. The world of true mother f'ing speed. 😂
No. Too tight just means it is even more tightly adjoined to the end of the crankshaft. The only way the pulley won't spin is is if it is NOT adjoined/connected/bolted/fully torqued to the shaft.
Hi, have you removed the bolt, or having trouble doing so? Your vehicle uses a chain. If you can fit an impact in there you can use it, if your impact has adjusting torque set it accordingly to or as close to specs as possible, you don't want to over do it.

I’m confusing if I install a metal crank shaft peg to hold the crank while I tightening the crank bold with my impact wrench. Does it safely to the engine’s block or I have to remove the starter to install a fly wheel locking tool? Remove the starter is a mess up in the Focus. Videos said put 74ft/lb on the crank bolt and after add more 90degre breaker bar to make sure crank sprocket and crank shaft doesn’t get slide later. Cam sprockets and crank sprocket without any keyway or mark on them. I’ll plan to do it tomorrow.. If you have any advices , please let me know. Thanks again.

My car is ruined because that bolt cane loose, meNing they pulley had a wobnle meaning my crankshaft was worn away, they keyway doubled in size snd the gears/sorokets were ruined. New psrts dobt fit on ky crankshaft now, so they car is dead. Having the bolt not toght enough had auite fukked up my life
Yea well welcome to the hell of modern fucking Torque to Yield crank bolts, what you just did there would either rip the bolt in 2 or not even come close to driving it far enough. I hope you don't do it to your own car, if it has more than 200hp stock.

Takes 30 seconds to torque it to spec with a wrench. Can't spend extra 30 seconds? Your mechanic skills must really suck since you are not paid enough, so you try to cut corners like this. 1. Not enough torque, engine vibrations loosen pulleys, the engine shakes the entire car. 2. Heat helps loosen too if you don't have enough torque 3. Chances of damaging the threads that will cause it to loosen over time 4. You could damage crank bearings if too much torque 5. Damage the crank with too much torque
.....and this is why I dont let mechanics touch my car.

I've never torqued crank bolts. I've always ran them in with an impact. Never an issue, not once.

This is how I do these with 330Nm for example: 1,85m long lever and 18kg on top of the tip = ~330Nm.
