As a white person born in a "post-apartheid" South Africa, I've always been incredibly uncomfortable with the level of denial that exists within my community. I regularly encounter people who have clearly benefited from apartheid (directly or otherwise) playing the "reverse racism" card, or the "it's been 30 years, just move on" card, all in an attempt to avoid facing the reality of our privilege. Being made to feel uncomfortable about the legacy of our behavior does not equate to discrimination. Being asked to be mindful of the lived experiences of South Africans of colour and to accommodate their anger, frustration, and suspicion is not oppression. Policies like BEE, designed to redress the wrongs of the past, are not "reverse racism". Rather, these are the consequences of our actions, or those of our parents and grandparents from which we continue to benefit. The people who have been so quick to defend Renaldo Gouws are the same people who support the white farm murder conspiracy theory. They would sooner invent a genocide than admit that white South Africans may have a racism problem. The DA's hand wringing about this does not erase the fact that there is an undercurrent of racism in everything they say and do. Their neoliberal rhetoric and refusal to engage with the issue of race have empowered people like Renaldo Gouws, and they are now infiltrating our democratic institutions. Yes, they may have a better service delivery record than the ANC, and, yes, they may not have their history of corruption, but we shouldn't have to choose between a functional government and social justice. We deserve better than that.
The "white farm murder conspiracy theory" is not a conspiracy theory, it is fact... What some of these people have been through is unspeakable and unjustify-able, and in many cases, unhealable too.
Honestly odds are they didn't and unless you have a very short memory this is joke compared to what the ANC have done. Thabo Mbeki denied the existence of aids frustrating access to life saving drugs and drugs that prevented its spread to children. Jacob Zuma and Mbeki allowed critical infrastructure including water and electricity to degrade. Putting at risk the most poor and extremely disadvantaged. Including those whom thanks to Mbeki have aids or hiv. Meanwhile Gouws said bad words

As a Black individual, I am deeply troubled by the overt racism demonstrated by some members of the Black community in this country. It is important to acknowledge that nobody, regardless of their background, has the right to be racist. It's crucial for us to address and challenge racism in all its forms, within and outside of our own community.
Eh, pointless... SA is a prime example of how certain cultures are incompatible and how modern misinformation is almost entirely fueling modern racism... At this point, SA is on a direct trajectory for a wide spread racially motivated conflict. It's gonna happen, whether we like it or not.
Thank you Sizwe for mentioning the reality of what black people have experienced for eons. Can you imagine the number of Renaldo Gouwses that occupy positions of authority & influence in this country.

You talk about small town, you literally hear that word and the derogatory terms for coloured people in Cape Town, all the time. The Western Cape, as a whole, just regressed so much.
We have a serious problem on our hands as black people. Renaldo is the one racist who said it with his chest and even went as far as getting into government. How many of them are out there that never say anything, just silently living amongst us, looking at us in disgust, making decisions to exclude us (SILENTLY) financially. We have a serious problem. The fact that someone like Renaldo could even amas enough of a following to make it as a public office bearer is a glaring example of the fact that his views not only resonate with, but also are supported by people who live among us. I think thats a little scary, if not terrifying if you truly think about it.
I can' thank you enough for this video and I respect the hell out of you for keeping a cool head. Renaldo Gouws has insulted, belittled, threatened and doxxed countless people in the past ten years. I honestly wish it had. Unfortunately, I have the displeasure of living in the same town as this clown. There are two camps here: people like me who can't stand him, and others who think he's fabulous for some reason.
Excellent and sensible video. I would like to share my experience when I lived in SA. 2012 I participated in a course in Durban. It was me (a swede), a young white woman and a few other black women. In a lunch break I asked the others about their experiences during apartheid. The result was an interesting discussion but the white woman was dead silent. In the afternoon she came up to me and she was so grateful for me starting this discussion. It was the first time in her life that she was part of such a discussion. She was just a small girl at 1994 and now her parents refused to talk about apartheid era and her friends were just not interested in talking about the subject. It clearly shows that the rainbow nation has only put a thin layer on the obvios racism that still exists
As a white non-citizen who has worked in several African countries, and gave back my Green Card at the US Embassy in Eritrea(!), who cannot vote in SA elections, this election has made me take notice, and I've been listening to various channels from all sectors of the population, incl smwx, and I am very glad you have spoken about both Renaldo Gouws- how can the DA even hesitate to have nothing further to do with him? - and racism in SA. We whites need to hear this, we need educating, and your channel is very valuable for that. One of the first conversations, on another channel, was with Dr Ntando Sindane of UWC, and he kept ranting about "whiteness", but I couldn't work out from his conversation what exactly he was complaining about. So i would be very grateful if you would do a no-holds-barred video on what the story is here. The only way SA can progress is if both sides of society make the sincerest efforts to understand each other, recognise the others' strengths and their own weaknesses, and use them in optimum ways to work together. Maybe this is a statement of whiteness?? Many thanks for your channel, and for reading this. Z
As a fellow "white non-citizen", my understanding of whiteness in a South African context is primarily pretending like there's a level playing field when clearly there isn't. Also getting away with not speaking any local languages and assuming we have better education without actually educating ourselves about African culture and knowledge systems, and thinking questionable forms of cultural appropriation are flattering. And finally to rush to being offended when criticised or called out for problematic behaviours or statements instead of reflecting on them.
Part of educating is for the other side to be willing to be educated, unfortunately, that won't happen with white South Africans. they're beyond critique and they're the know-it-alls who cannot learn anything from anyone

“Kill the farmer, kill the boer” is not helping anyone. It only causes hate from from both black and white. Singing struggle songs are not taking SA forward. In fact it’s taking SA a step backward every time someone goes on a platform and sings it. Let’s just put a stop to that.
We are still in a struggle though. We are literally the most unequal nation in the universe, we don't change that by just saying "lets build together" or "rainbow". There are things that need to be addressed.
@@Mketsi2708 he made the video in response to “kill the farmer, kill the Boer” so we have to go there…. And when do you suppose we get to the racist EFF/Malema/Zuma?
I’m coloured man who is white passing I come from cape flats and I hate racism because I experienced it on a daily because I was in a black and coloured community and I really like this channel because it challenges my beliefs and to say I’m not racist is a lie because some of my beliefs are from what stems of as a child is that I was not brown enough to enjoy black and coloured communities but I wasn’t white enough to enjoy that community so I believe we should have racial equality and racial justice but I believe we should be teaching it in schools not trying to hold someone accountable for what they believe or see because the one thing you can’t do is try to change a racist because they have been taught that they are superior and no matter how we try to rehabilitate these people it won’t work because from youth till now there beliefs won’t change but if we introduce Legislation that introduce racial equality and racial justice into a youth environment for which schools would be best to do I think rooting out racism through generations would be ideal because I believe that all those people who treated me differently because of my colour of skin I would not want them to change but there children I believe that is who we should be focusing on and how we win the battle of racism and rooting it out of society no matter if you black or white and in my case coloured. Im a very proud DA supporter let’s not say the DA is racist because they aren’t the main reason the DA was created was to fight against apartheid but rather say the DA has a lot of accused racist in the party and I believe Renaldo Gouws should be put in jail for things he said.
In instances like this you would hope that people who support the DA(white, brown or black) can do more like you by either exposing, educating or stopping it, not aid and abet by being silent when it happens around their workplace, dinner tables and in public spaces. It's uncomfortable for some but it needs to be addressed for the sake of the children.
Lol... the irony of all this is that coloureds, especially Western Cape coloureds, are the most racist. I rarely if ever experienced racism from a mlungu. If a recorder was put in a coloured household, or coloured dominated work place. Most of you would be joining Renaldo Gouws in jail. So you suggesting that locking somebody up for words is justified is crazy. Sure he is a racist, and should not be serving the public in any capacity, but should he be arrested? Thats a big no.
I agree he is a racist, by why did the human rights council rule that Malema's kill the boer chants where not hate speech. Why is Malema not being held accountable for his language

This, for me, is a bit of a quandary. What he said and how he said it is not defensible, which can't continue if we are to survive. But I think there is an issue of people not listening to each other when it comes to this matter. The man obviously has problems, but these are views that a large part of the population has. We can't condemn him and his views (which many people have), chuck him out, and then still think we are going to build a united nation. They have grievances on their side that have, such as the problematic song. We have to condemn everything with the same energy. Because if he goes to court and wins the case, we just accept that it's fine (like you justified for the song)? I would say eff no. I reckon they feel the same way about the song. Just because the court says it's OK, doesn't mean it's OK. People have to listen to each other better, especially the people we disagree with the most. Otherwise we will never make it as a nation. The same discomfort will continue because we are just acknowledging one side.

Racism in any way shape or form is not acceptable, but you should be consistent in calling it out. A few days ago racist remarks were made against white leaders (during a SMWX discussion) and it was not called out.
" As a man thinketh so is he" and inevitably he acts out. There are many examples. We made great strides in SA albeit many challenges ahead but we need to root out the pockets of racism which still exists - the use of Hotnot (which was used against me & Geeltjie), use of Koelie, Boesman & others to degrade a person must be exposed & corrected when uncovered & through constant fwd education. It's true that media is guilty of leaving out minor or minority stories by focusing on what's called news worthy material. We all equal and every small matter or thing matters. South Africa has never confronted racial education like it should be. It's time that white communities are taught racism and it's systems by another White person. There should be a Jane Elliott figure to teach white people self reflection.
Fully agree. Having grown up in Europe, the evil history of Fascism was taught in school relentlessly. In South Africa, I've often been surprised how little people seem to know about the history of Apartheid and how a lot of white South Africans don't take it seriously and still believe a lot of the myths taught by Apartheid ("empty land", "tribal wars" etc...). They also seem to be under the misconception that Dutch is an African languge.
I totally agree we as a country have never dealt with the past, we have avoided conversations that we need to have. This might sound a bit weak, but as a white South African who was very young when Apartheid ended, I could intellectually understand its impact and ramifications, but I didn't have a tangible emotional connection to it. I didn't participate in it, and although I can see its legacy all around, I still somewhat live in a bubble. When COVID happened, I lost everything. I was incredibly angry at the government for taking away my rights, my ability to feed my family, and more. I had an emotional response, and with so much time on my hands, I started to reflect. I realized that how I felt over such small restrictions, in contrast to the entirety of Apartheid, was intense. That was a lightbulb moment for me. I gained an emotional understanding of how most people must have felt-and still feel, 30 years later, when so little has actually changed. For those still living in the same conditions as before 1994, they intellectually understand the rights they have on paper but have yet to truly experience them.

A white South African males’ perspective: 1. Renaldo Gouws needs to be held accountable to the highest degree, which he will be, as the necessary processes have commenced. The alleged context, was perhaps the parallels and ‘rules for some’ Gouws was trying to draw between the Kill the Boer struggle song and what he was saying. The tone and robust nature in which he delivered his opinion, was idiotic, because there was always going to be backlash for a white South African to use those words - irrespective of the context. 2. Although Julius Malema has gone to court for the Kill the Boer song and it has been challenged legally, it still creates deep hurt, fear and does in fact incite people to murder people. The farm murder statistics speak for themselves, especially if you delve deeper into stats. If Julius really cared about all South Africans, he would have retracted that song, because it possesses great potential to be misinterpreted by his radical followers, which has resulted in the most atrocious murders of families. In some cases woman, children and the elderly people tortured, before they lost their lives. Some of the photos I saw made me physically sick. Any reasonable person can understand this, pity a judge couldn’t. 3. Racism is alive and well, I wholeheartedly agree. I speak English, isiZulu and Afrikaans fluently. Disclaimer, I didn’t grow up on a farm, but in eThekweni. Some of my best friends growing up were black, some Afrikaans and some English - I really didn’t see colour as a child. As I grew older, I saw and heard racism from all of these groups. Especially those that thought I couldn’t hear them like the Zulu and Afrikaans speaking people. In public, I have heard the most disgusting racist utterances between different racial groups. It is alive and well in our country. To be congruent to this video and the Gouws topic, he will inevitably and rightfully be held to a higher standard as an MP. The rest of South Africa. We can be lucky mobile phones and associated mobile devices weren’t there to film most of us. Gouws also put himself out there, which is begging for public awareness of him, his platforms - the scrutiny he is receiving comes with the territory. 4. It is evident that you lean towards the left and find your identity with those that campaign for the same ideals like your dad, Malema and Sindane (who is harmful and is a racist). This message is not solely for you to read. This message is for all of us South Africans that are good people and have love in their hearts for all races, shapes and sizes. I implore you to try make a difference in everyday interactions, show patience, love and acceptance of people - especially when they don’t deserve it. Show people that God lives within you - that will effect more change than these ideological opinions, which are light years away from effecting real change, if ever. I would like for someone to point out my white privilege, because I was raised by a single mother who could barely afford to feed me. I fought like many South Africans and received a scholarship to a good high school, I worked while I paid for every cent of my BSc. Honours degree. I didn’t wait for the constitution to change, I also didn’t leave the country because of BBBEE. Fight for your families, fight for a better future and fight for what is right. Fight with the love that God has for each one of us in His heart, not with hatred and violence. As idealistic as it sounds, I want all South Africans to be able to live in prosperity and dignity - it is possible to achieve this before most of us kick the bucket. The change starts with you.

Thank you.
The "white farm murder conspiracy theory" is not a conspiracy theory, it is fact... What some of these people have been through is unspeakable and unjustify-able, and in many cases, unhealable too.

In the afternoon she came up to me and she was so grateful for me starting this discussion. It was the first time in her life that she was part of such a discussion. She was just a small girl at 1994 and now her parents refused to talk about apartheid era and her friends were just not interested in talking about the subject.

Finally, someone with some sense.
A white South African males’ perspective:
Apologies, written (badly) from my mobile phone - the struggle was real 😂
Also, it extremely limiting to try and convey my message in the text box. I hope it will reach at least one person and effect, real and positive change.
As a white person u have opportunity and career advancement
@@LydiaKungoane BEE would like to disagree
@@LydiaKungoane Your response surprised nobody.
@@LydiaKungoanewhat do you suggest? He pass it on to you....? Apologize/grovel...? Give everything he has earned away and live in abject poverty...? Or try to create wealth and spread it in the economy by creating opportunities for others...? Or maybe he should just leave....? What about others who are struggling and have nothing to give... What should they do?
Once again, fantastic analysis and commentary on this matter, Sizwe. Makes me so hopeful as a South African that we can indeed confront raciam and racial justice with intentionality and honesty. It's such a shame that there are people and groups like Gouws and Cameron and the DA who desperately want to stifle these conversations and efforts and gaslight the population into believing that they do not matter.
Do you know much about Ian Cameron and his fight against crime, and the way he stands up for the victims of crime in Khayelitsha, and criticizes the lack of training and equipment and corruption in the police force? Somewhere, accountability has to happen....
@janineroux2398 so that should excuse the fact that he engaged in extremely racist behaviour? Do we excuse the actions of perpetrators (of sexual offences, corruption, other crimes, etc.) just because they've done some "good" things for society?
@@SarahMally859 to be fair you should watch the video... I believe Ronaldo was making a point about Malema's behaviour, by pointing out that how would people like it if he called people "such-and-such" and asked for their killing.... That is the context... I am not a follower if Ronaldo and don't know that much about him, but I can tell you that at around about the same time Malema was singing those songs (vociferously, as you can find in videos on TH-cam), a number of white farmers and their wives and children were brutally murdered... And may I say, the pity is that a lot of black farmworkers have also been killed and injured or their livelihoods badly affected... While this was never proven in court, it happened simultaneously, and is still happening today... That is the context behind Ronaldo's, remarks... And if this gets taken down, I don't care, I hope you read it and understand.
Really good video. I agree with everything. I love your channel.
I appreciate that!
Sizwe you are just what the Doctor ordered as a Doctor. I often get defeated when I see this amount of racism and more often so subtle and sometimes denied by our own people.
