Put together a few thoughts on how to combine Blues Rhythm & Lead. It all comes down to knowing your Chord Tones aka your Target Notes and highlighting those and then building bridges with little Licks in between the Chords.
When I began 8 Years ago I just learned as many Licks as possible and I still love to learn a new one, but now I always know why those Licks work and that is because of understanding the Intervals that make up each Chord. The Blues is kinda a real cool thing for Beginners as well, because every Note in the Pentatonic will sound fine, but the next Level thing is being able to mix the Major & Minor Pentatonic and highlighting the Chord Tones at the same time.
If you can do that, you don't even need a Backing Track to hear the Changes, because you will be implying a Chord with the Notes you are playing. Then there is also playing "outside" the Changes, which can sound cool as well, but creates a lot of Tension, because you are playing Notes that are not belonging to the Chord that is played by the Rhythm Section/Backing Track. Think of Robben Ford and the Diminished Scale for Example.
I hope you enjoy!

Ben! You are going the Right Way!
This is what I was thinking lately I need.... comes mainly from playing Mayer that this Desire arose!
Thx you! It so great to practice, imagine how good you will be able to improvise if you then don’t have play the rhythm!
@@BenK. I will soak this up today! You keep on course! Dreams don't have a Deadline. It takes time and focus!

Hey Ben! I’ve been using your videos as a way of practicing for a number of months now and I can’t appreciate the work you’re doing enough. Do you have a practice routine or a certain way of practicing that you do daily? I’m feeling kind of stuck learning strictly off TH-cam and I’ve not been able to find a practice routine based around blues playing. Thanks!
Hey Tim!
I'm very happy to hear that! Honestly no...I just have phases where I immerse myself in a Song/Solo/Style...or maybe just grab the Acoustic for the while.
I just always try to learn something new and connect more and more dots so I can get more creative. For Blues playing it's a lot of fun (in my opinion) to play over Live Versions of certain songs (in my opinion that sounds more real than a Backing Track)...I mean it's a little cocky to pretend BB King or whoever isn't there, but that is a lot of fun and a good way to practice.
Just never practice without a context...rhythmically or harmony wise, you don't want to be the guy who just noodles on the guitar
@@BenK.I’ll definitely keep that in mind! I remember somewhere in an interview John would put records on and pretend he was playing with the greats so I’ll definitely start doing that like you mentioned haha. Also, if you’re taking any request or even just a challenge for yourself, the where the light is wait until tomorrow solo would be awesome to see you play. Keep up the good work👍🏼
Yea that is just so much fun to be honest! He’s 100% right! Oh that’s a challenge! 😁
Can you make a video about John Mayer solo in Respectable with The Rolling Stones ?
That is on the List! Love that Solo he plays there!
8:41 what's the chord?

@@BenK.thank you, could you do a tutorial of everyday i have the blues?
Distortion ruins this
There was just a slight overdrive going on 👀
