Michigan State Beats Michigan On Punter's Fumble On Last Play Of The Game (HD)

- All Michigan had to do was get this punt off and it would hand Michigan State its first lost of the season. Instead, an unfathomable play handed the Wolverines the 27-23 loss.
No. 7 Michigan State stunned No. 12 Michigan in Ann Arbor as time expired, forcing a fumble by the Wolverines’ punter and returning it for a touchdown.
With the Wolverines up 23-21 and 10 seconds left, Blake O’Neill, punting away on a play that looked like it would seal the game, fumbled the snap and then attempted to get rid of the ball. As he tried to kick it away, Michigan State’s special teams arrived and applied heavy pressure, forcing him to lose the ball. Sophomore Jalen Watts-Jackson, a reserve defensive back, came up with the fumble and took it back all the way to win the game.

People knock on the announcer. But that is as professionally done as it possibly can be. Hitting the name of a reserve defensive back on a special teams play who picked up the ball while the play is still going, genuinely reacting then leaving the iconic moment to be soaked in is just pure class. This is one of the most epic moments in college football history, and the call meets the standards of the moment it shares.
McDonough always had a voice crack problem tho, Gruden would always joke about it when they called games together on MNF

The dude picks up the ball and is running it back and a name probably never said before or since on national television gets hit at a perfect time so people going back to this play in the history of college football always hear the name of the man that scoop and scored on this legendary play. Even if the man never played a down of football in his life after this his name in linked to history because of the ultra professionalism of the announcer having the situational awareness during this insane moment to make sure he got the name right. That's bigger than you'll ever know.
Imagine being the guy who scooped and scored and your name was never said during the highlight. That would really suck.

Literally all Michigan had to do was not give up a fumble return for a touchdown and they win. But they gave up a fumble return for a touchdown. Amazing.
Well, they could have given up a punt return for a TD, too. Either way, that was one heck of a way to lose. Couldn't happen to a better guy that Harbaugh and a better team than TTUN.
The special teams kicking coach should have been fired. It falls back on him for not coaching the punter (AND reiterating to him right before that specific play) to fall on the ball in that type of scenario or if that were to unluckly happen.
Well, the punter is likely thinking if I just fall on it and they tackle me, the change of possession will stop the clock and they will have nine seconds for a long field goal. So, he’s thinking he HAS to kick it. He’s wrong, of course, but I’m sure that’s why he tried that last desperate attempt that doomed him.

Fun fact: this was the same day as Ohio State’s first ever blackout game against Penn State, and while the stands were filling up, this game was coming to a close. They showed this play on the big screen maybe 20 minutes before kickoff, and as cool as the atmosphere was for the blackout, the reaction to this play may have been the loudest cheer of the night 😂

similar scenario at the chiefs vs bills playoff game this year, about an hour before the game in KC was about to start, the rams vs buccaneers game was coming to a close, they showed it on the big screen and it zoomed in on brady, not a single person in a stadium filled with chiefs and bills fans didn’t put up the double middle finger, myself included.. safe to say one of the loudest roars of the night was at the end of the game when the rams won😂😂

My Pop graduated MSU back in 1956. He's 88 years old now, and not in the best of health. I sent my Mother this video yesterday, so she could show it to him during this pandemic.
She told me it made his day, and put a huge smile on his face! He told her, "any day you beat Michigan, it's a great day for the Spartans".
He was a Vet for 61 years, and retired in 2017 at age 85. When he started at Michigan state, it was MS COLLEGE. When he graduated in 56, it changed to MSU. We still have a blanket, and some dolls with the MSC logo on them. He married his HS sweetheart, and brought those items back to NJ as a gift.

He was a proud Spartan for sure. When he retired in 2017, he was the oldest practicing Veterinarian in the state of NJ. His practice was purchased by two Vets, and they kept the name of the Hospital. Pop and his father built the hospital. ..very handy men, and it opened in 1963. We lived behind the Hosp till 1970.
Growing up behind an animal hospital in the 60's was fun! No such thing as an emergency clinic back then. We saw everything small animal, and a bunch of large ones too.
I was bitten by a lion when I was 7 ... I should write a book : )

exactly six years ago today my whole family watched this happen live on TV. my dad is an MSU alumni and huge football fan, but i was still in middle school when this happened. six years later and i’m a sophomore at MSU, a proud spartan. it’s crazy how time flies because i remember this so vividly. cant wait for oct. 30th; i’ll be in the student section when we go 8-0. go green!

Best stunned fan reaction since I was in the Humphrey Dome in '89 to watch the Buckeyes come from down 31-0 to win 41-37. Deer-in-the-headlights doesn't adequately describe either fan base. Sean McDonnough's call is epic. His voice cracking and genuine excitement was and is great to hear. My fav announcer when an exciting play happens. His pitch and volume both going up without being over the top fake just add to the moment.

He couldn't let the moment speak for himself. Really, it’s on the long snapper who couldn’t get the ball to him or whoever told the punter to be SIXTEEN yards deep. Michigan State still almost got tackled with the clock expiring too.

@@bestieswithtesties I don’t know that falling on the ball (often just as hard as picking it up) at the 37, giving the other team 7-8 seconds to kick a makeable field goal is the obviously better choice than trying to quickly pick it up and punt it. Remember they’re only up by two points, and in college as soon as you are touching the ground with possession, the whistle is blown. He doesn’t even need to be tackled for the play to stop and the turnover on downs to occur. They probably still lose the game over half the time if he just falls on it. It’s a snap that made it to the punter about a foot off the ground. That’s the mistake, and at that point you’re probably screwed.

Nope. The kick six in the Iron Bowl was: all Alabama had to do was basically run out the clock and and go to overtime. Saban instead goes for a long field goal with a freshman kicker who had never kicked that far before and with a guy that was standing in the endzone that ran it back because Alabama didn't have their fast guys on the kickoff return.
Alabama in essence lost a shot at the SEC title and the national championship because of that goof .

One of the greatest moments in MSU history. Got home from work just in time to witness the play on tv and absolutely lost my shit. I worked catering in Ann Arbor at the time and actually met the Michigan punter a week later and got to compliment him on his 80+ yd punt earlier in the game. Secretly I wanted to thank him though as an MSU fan lol
I will remember this moment for the rest of my life. My son was at the game with my niece. While I was watching it at my sisters house. Turned off the t.v. volume, too much UofM loving sportscasters, and had on the MSU radio broadcast which is in real time and not on delay like the t.v. As the last play was about to snap on the t.v. the radio announcer called the fumble. It was as if our prayers were being answered as we watched. Magic! 💚

One of my favorite parts about this play is that the Michigan player who catches up to tackle him in the end zone is trapped underneath the celebration of the MS players 😂😂 that must of sucked!!

I was at my aunt and uncles, lots of family was there, lots of trash talk happening through out the game, I was sure Michigan was going to win, I was sitting on the couch with my feet kicked up and my hands clasped behind my head, like there’s not a care in the world, like we had the game in the bag, but all the sudden they snap it, and the kicker muffs the ball up, and all the sudden I’m not so settled in anymore, but in my head it’s like eh they’ll just tackle him and we will win, nope, I just sat there panicking as I watch no one tackle him and he proceeds to score a touchdown, all the spartan fans in the room going nuts, I can’t believe what I just seen, the emotions were to much for me, so I went outside to the driveway were I can here countless people in the distance screaming with joy and testosterone, so for some reason I lost it and grabbed my phone and hurled it farther than that Michigan kicker could ever dream of kicking that football that night, and I punched a dent in my car and got in there, and couldn’t help but cry from all the rage I was feeling, it was good to get that out at the time though because through out life I tend to bottle things up so sometimes it’s good to let it out ya know? Well that’s my story, I’d love to hear others stories! 😅
We were at my grandparents house watching that game (Wolverine fans) and my whole family is comprised of Wolverine fans, after that play basically everyone was calling one another asking if we saw the play and it didn't stop for a while… oh well, the shoes on the other foot now

It's really up there as one of the greatest (most disastrous) plays of college football all-time. I mean no one for MSU was back to get it. Even if he falls on it, it is a 57 yd field goal, so extremely low chance of going in. Instead, he quite literally passes it to the player on MSU that has a running start toward the end zone.

One thing that gets overlooked is everything that LED UP TO THE PLAY. First off, this entire game was legendary and a nail-biter. Just an intense and epic back and forth game. But from the moment that Kings drops a crucial catch on 3rd down on the Spartans' last drive, up until Michigan stopping them on 4th down and running down the clock, this eerie sort of calm took over the whole stadium. It was huge for MSU to not just let them get one more first down. That whole limbo period of Michigan basically feeling like it was over, I just had this strange feeling. I was still holding out for a miracle and was cheering when they stopped Michigan on 3rd and short. Then I remember my UofM friend just snickering at me saying "you're only gonna have 10 seconds left". I was like "there's still a chance". Then when the announcer said that nobody was back to return the punt I was thinking wow just BLOCK IT. Then right before the snap I just had this satisfying feeling take over me like "well I'm glad they get one solid chance to do something crazy". While they didn't exactly block it, the rest is history.
The other crazy part for me is that my UofM friend had set up an HD stream somehow through his computer or something...so it was actually lagging behind the actual live footage. He was having trouble setting it up early on when the game first started and so I had to put on another tv on the other side of the room that was smaller. Once he set it up I watched the HD tv for the rest of the game. It's always been strange to contemplate that the whole thing happened behind us on the other side of the room before we ever saw it. So when I was actually watching the play and had that strange satisfying feeling right before the snap, it had already happened right behind us but i never turned around to look and the volume was all the way down.
That Michigan fan is a meme for every Michigan State fan as well as every Ohio State fan whenever they want to rub in a Michigan loss
My team, Notre Dame share one thing in common with the MSU, and OSU fans.
