With the release of Roja, we north Indians came to know about the richness of south Indian movies. After Roja, many south Indian movies started to release in North India and many south Indian actors became household names in north India as well.

this is true. Roja was the movie that showed North Indian the quality of South Indian movies. Untill then the North Indian audience only knew Rajnikanth for fighting style and his cigarette smoking and sunglass wearing.

All Mani Ratnam movies are generally in the very good to great band. But, what is not understood when you or even younger indians watch these movies, is the impact his movies had on the whole industry. His 1988 movie 'Agni Natchathiram' changed the way lighting was used in indian movies. The song 'Raja dhi Raja' is stunning even today. 'Roja' introduced A.R.Rahman and completely changed the indian music scene. Between him and Ram Gopal Varma, they brought it both modern movie making technologies and story telling techniques.

Actually I don't find Aravind Swamy's actions too much. I would do the same thing. I am not jingoistic flag waving patriot. But I think my country deserves that I respect my national anthem and my flag. I am not a soldier fighting for my motherland but as a common person I could do what the actor did. That is what is so believeable about the scene. As a poet said :
Breathes there man with a soul so dead.
Who ne'er to himself has said
This is my own my native land.

An instant modern classic!! Till my last day, I will never be sick of this film. My all time favorite A.R. Rahman and Mani Ratnam's film. The music album is a piece of sound, straight from the heaven, that I would like to retire with on a remote island. I can go on and on about the film, and the memories, and nostalgia attached, from the innumerable times that I have watched it, over the years. Enough said. A classic. In the true sense of the term. Period.

Hey Jimmy and Deniz. I can understand why you couldn't relate to the scene where Arvind Swamy rolls his body over a burning Indian flag. Since childhood, as Indians, we have been taught in school to respect the Indian flag as it has its own story. Each colour represents something. It's a crime in India to disrespect the Indian flag. And hence the scene is very moving for every Indian.

Thanks guys for a good review. You literally get into the skin of the movie and that's what I really like. Moreover, unlike other westerners who review Indian content, you seem more appreciative of our cultural roots that reflect in our movies. Anyway, coming back to Roja, it is not the best work of Mani Ratnam in my opinion. In fact, you should watch Geetanjali, his first straight Telugu movie. You would fall in love with that movie. Even today, its in my top 10 movies across all languages that I have seen movies in. This movie benefited from the time it released, as terrorism was a major issue in those days. The use of light as a tool in visuals stood out in this movie. Sad that Santosh Sivan did not do enough movies as a cinematographer. He is easily the best cinematographer India has produced, with others like Senthil Kumar coming close.

So I am tearing up as I watch your review as this is exactly how I felt when I watched this film in the cinemas when I was a 15 year old kid. I came out of the cinema and made everyone I know watch it. I couldn't understand why no one is blown away like I was after watching this film. I remember seeing it at least 5 times in the cinema. AR Rahman and Santosh Sivan definitely had something to do with it. PS - I find it hard to believe that the scene where he tries to extinguish the Indian flag(to the song - Tamizha Tamizha) had no effect on you two :). The score of that track still makes me all riled up for no reason haha.

Hats off to your enthusiasm and research. Just one thing... actors and the music director must be new, but rest of the crew is super senior and prominent in entire India those days.
The film was produced by K. Balachander, another director known for his distinct film-making style who had already directed above 100+ films (already 95 movies by then). Mani Ratnam, on the other hand, also had been in the industry for 10 years and bagged several awards. Writers and the cinematographer were also not noobs.
One interesting fact (although irrelevant) I want to share here is that Mani Ratnam, maverick Ram Gopal Varma, and sensational Shekar Kapoor later formed a production company hoping to make more films, but all the three are hotheads and they managed to make only one movie (Dil Se another movie with Terrorism in Kashmir as the background) on that banner. However, Ram Gopal Varma later produced some of the world's greatest movies like Satya, Company and Ab Tak Chappan, and Maniratnam directed a few more good movies under his own banner.

Sorry but there is on one thing that you said about the partition of india that is wrong.
India was/is a hindu majority country, but we were/are inclusive of all religions. It was not formed on the basis of religion like pakistan.Sikhs, hindus and even some muslims who lived in the now pakistan territory in 1947 came back to current indian region. In fact gandhi who supported this secularism got assassinated by a hindu fanatic named godse.
I felt like saying this because the secularism which is a fundamental part of our constitution is under threat in our current political climate.

Roja is an all-time favourite. I remember having watched and rewatched the movie numerous times, although not any time recently. I would like to suggest the movie 'Iruvar' (1997) by the same director/music composer/cinematographer trio.

The movie that immediately comes to mind when talking about how the background score plays an undeniable role in story-telling to the extent that the score in itself seems like a character of the movie, is Brady Corbet's directorial debut "The Childhood of a Leader" (2016). The music creates a mood of dread throughout the movie and goes well with the cinematic unfolding of the narrative. The music adds the narration to the scenes, infact. Its quite an experience as well like "Roja".

Roja is not a classic movie of Mani sir. Music and cinimatography were special. But movie was a emotional drama which did not convey the feel to audience. Very artificial acting and dialogues.
