My mom works at the post office where Chris ships all his orders. One day she asked what the countless packages he sends out contained. When he told her they were guitar picks, she mentioned that I played guitar. He then said that I could pick two styles and try them for free. Needless to say, i fell in love and knew I wouldn't be using any other brand again. After a few months of using my 1.5 mm Tripp, I found out that you were working on your signature pick and I had to try it out. Once I tried it out, I landed on 2mm unpolished Razers in dark green. I haven't used another pick since then. I have no plans to either. They are amazing picks and they are made just a few miles outside of my hometown. By far the best local business I've come across.
Alex Lifeson gave me a pick when I met him, that was a good day. I was actually buying some picks today, I've used jazz IIIs for years and after reading up about Paul Gilbert I wanted to try some thinner ones (.50 mil). surprisingly, I'm liking them so far.
It's an awesome looking guitar :) I was going to buy one but I saw an ESP LTD MH series and ended up putting down a deposit it ... ghost fret dreams went poof
Chappers I am loving that riff. As soon as I heard it, it resonated with me and now I must learn it. Very much intrigued to see how this solo album progresses.
My fav pick. I think the chicken pick and tusq pick are a tiny bit better tonally but the gravity pick makes me play better. There is a very slight tradeof where it makes an unpleasant noise if the string rings and the gravity pick touches it and semi mutes it but that is the only drawback. For sheer playability it craps over everything.
Rob, I also acquired one of these wonderful Gravity picks in a JHS pedal I had purchased. This is always my go to pick weather playing the acoustic or electric. Keep up the good work!
+Tay Beveridge just do your best, play it slow, make it sound cool... don't worry about the price, just give it a try. This will for sure help you develop your skills :)
Thanks Rob! What fun this is. I love watching your videos. I'll be practicing this rif. don't think I'll play it as fast as you can, but with some soul!!! p.s. I'm coveting that box of Gravity Picks!
+Kyle James I find that nobody uses facebook for its original intention now anyway. I'm only ever on the main site when I'm super duper bored and it's too late for me to play guitar without annoying my family. It's only useful for messaging people so you aren't missing out and it's a silly way to advertise imo. Twitter and Instagram is where it's at these days
+rob chapman when did you go to the guitar institute? Was it when it was at Wapping? I went and did Shawn Baxters Rock 1&2 in '96/97.. Dave K was teaching then and even did some of my classes too.
Hype.Hype.Hype.Super hype. Man, as a bass player, I am quite sad with the competition and ,as a Russian, sad about not having gravity picks in my country. Tho, the riff sounds sick. Love your work Rob. And a huge thank you for every thing you do. You inspire me to get better.
Is it fine if I play it in standard instead of D? I'll probably triple track guitars, and also add drums and bass. around the 15th or so note hammering on to a 5th (a) sounds like it would work better than pulling off to a 4th (g), but i'll try to play the riff faithfully (except for putting in E so I don't have to re-tune).
hey Rob! I'm really trying to improve my picking and I tried a lot of picks because I can't seem to find the right one. do you have tips for me? I'm really in to blues and I think I could improve my playing by finding the right pick because I struggle with fast playing because the picks are like slipping of the strings sometimes. I never tried the gravity picks but the look and, how you play, the sound amazing. maybe those would help me out! Anyway, I really enjoy your and the captain's work. You guys are awesome. I'm looking forward to the next videos!
I'll try one, thanks for the tip. I love the JD Jazz III Funny thing about working out tunes... We both started playing before the internet. You couldn't just Google tab. You either worked it out yourself or learned it off someone else then passed the knowledge on. Far more organic and I think it imparts some useful skills.
Hi Rob! Am I right in saying you were playing the riff in D standard, not E standard? Might make a difference for people trying to play along at home. Cheers!
Hey mate... I have my own Gravity pick embedded "Checo". A 1.5mm Razer in Cherry Red, unpolished of course. Feels awesome!!!! Chris is great and all the guys at Gravity. Best picks ever!! Oh and the best combination is Elixir Polyweb strings and Gravity plectrums! Cheers!
Hey Rob, is there any chance we'll be getting an offset body shape Chapman guitar in the future? If you'd release a jazzmaster style guitar I'd pick it up for sure.
Rob, I would love if you got back to me on this, is the riff open to artistic representation, as in am I allowed to change the tempo and intonation, and maybe even change genre?
Tuning is one whole step down, as far as I can tell. Going to tune my guitar down and take a shot. Thanks Rob, I've needed a reason to learn more things by ear for a while now. Hoping I have a chance at this at least... Cheers from the Netherlands
+eenwieleraar Patience. Play to the radio - yeah, its pop songs, but they do have no guitars. And you really learn to play. Understand the keys. Song writing formulas. www.svenhorlemann.com
Steel pick you mentioned. I started using Dava's with a steel tip and I loved the way it sounded, until I also noticed that it was destroying my strings! Especially the D string gets so flat and flat-sounded too.. I stopped using them.
I've still got the pink plastic pick that came with my first guitar, and I also bought a bloodwood and a mahogany wooden pick, but the main pick I use is the Tenacious D pick. (I got a set of 8 of them for Christmas a few years back) It's actually a really cool pick, you've got the stiff pointed edge for single notes like in solos, and the softer rounded edges for chords, mainly good for power chords. :) I really like it.
Hi Rob, I'm quite new to your channel (I've been around for about 3 weeks) and I found your guitar knowledge and skills, and I absolutely love your channel and your videos. Your videos have really helped me want to play guitar more and to push myself more. I'm quite new to guitar, I've only been playing for about 2 years... In August, I bought my first electric guitar, a Fender Mexican Strat, but I am looking to get some Nirvana, or maybe even some classic rock sounds from it, yet I cant really get the sounds out of it I want, but I am buying a BOSS DS-2 and maybe thinking of switching out my stock bridge pickup for a Seymour Duncan JB at some point... Any suggestions of where I could go from here tech wise?
I didn't try Gravity picks until you gave me yours at the Boiler room VIP gig Chappers. I've not used anything else since! Really helps my soloing articulation and has taught me dynamics in strumming for rhythm playing too.
I won't enter the contest Rob, instead I bought two of your signature picks. One for each guitar I own (An Epiphone SG G400 Pro, and a Fender CD60-ce acoustic). Btw, I love my SG... those guitars are workhorses in my opinion. So yeah, since you've been raving about these picks for as long as I watch your videos and it was about time to order some to try. I hope i'll enjoy using them as much as you have. Can't wait for them to arrive from the UK retailer! In any case: If a guitarist can't find a single pick than he doesn't have enough picks, as a pick should be in every nook and cranny and then some more. ;)
Are you going to announce the ghostfret meme cometition winner? I know it's been 3 months already, but i haven't found the announcement anywhere.. or did i miss something?
Ahhh damn I’m I too late for this win!, I would’ve won but there’s a time zone issue because I’m in San Diego, California! We even met at Guitar Center and you gave me the Gravity out of your pocket!! Love your show brother!!!
As someone who picks pretty hard, my Gravity pick (Rob's signature one) has worn down quite a lot over the few months I've had it. But saying that, it's without a doubt the best pick I've ever used! Even worn down, their still excellent.
I've been using Gravity picks myself for some time, they just hold up so fantastically and sound amazing! Have you tried the Gold Series picks, yet? What do you think of them?
nice to see competitions. I personally wouldn't go to the effort of making video entries for a competition for anything less than a Les Paul (or similar), but will eat popcorn to see how many make the effort for some plectrums :)
I remember as a beginner spending hours trying to figure out Pearl Jam's Alive solo by ear which basically meant pausing the CD every few seconds to figure out what he was doing. Good times.
I've been using Dunlop Max Grip 1.0 for some time now. I love them. I didn't ever had too many different picks anyway. Just the regular nylon stuff, a few stubby picks, the Jazz III by Dunlop and the Max Grips.
do they have one that like a jazz 3 i really like the size and shape of the jazz 3 they just wear down so fast for me if so which one is that in particular is it id really like to try it out
Rob, Did you know where you did the Chapman tour in San Francisco is only a few blocks away from Satch's guitar tech's, Gary Brawer, shop? Cool little shop, great guys, and great techs.
My interpretation is he wants somebody to make something of it, doesn't really matter the tempo, tuning ect, as long as the skeleton of the riff is there... "Make it musical"
I must agree with you rob great picks BUT they are so hard to get here in the UK ,Lee has a few old ones but seem he has not renewed with Gravity picks so far each to there own I like the standard polished .75 and 2.0 polished the challenge is not to try them but to find them :-) of to find some more ......love the videos keep them coming congrats on your new found success you deserve it
so i once had 2 different gravity pick given to me and while they were cool i found they wore down really fast. the sharp tip is what made then great. once that goes they feel like a thick normal pick. i switched to Dragonheart picks. and its been about a year of owning my one pick from them and i just now started to notice that one of the 3 unique edges wearing down.
im gonna buy my first real expensive guitar from riff city and its gonna be a ghost fret natural color! super excited man keep doing what your doing your great
Do that video where you bathe in the picks :)
YES
yes do it
I agree
i will pay huge money for that

Fucking brutal dude
+Erik Nyberg I can play an Em7add11
Just downtune to drop-D, then you're halfway to being able to djent.
Just downtune to drop-D, then you're halfway to being able to djent.
I'll take Rob bathing in Gravity Pick for £500
Wait... your teacher was Dave Kilminster?!
I'm also confused
Yes! He plays for Steven Wilson, Roger Waters etc
+Rob Chapman He is such a talented guitar player! Truly amazing!
+Rob Chapman Well that certainly explains a number of things
My guitar teachers named Dave and his last name starts with a "K" too lol, not the same dave though obviously
Once you go Jazz picks, you don't go back.
+James Russo I don't like Jazz III Picks. I use 1.0 mm dunlop big stubby picks
I use the Jazz III XL size, fell in love with them. Typically use tortex, but waiting on the new Prinetone ones now :)
+James Russo I use the Ultex ones, recommended by Bea 😁
jazz 3 max grips in carbon fiber 👍
ikr!

I love the idea behind this contest. Its a great concept and helps make for a more well rounded musician
I just bought two of your signature gravity picks and they're absolutely the best feeling picks I've used by far
I bought your sig gravity and now i swear by gravity razors i love them best picks i have ever used i wont use anything else
Alex Lifeson gave me a pick when I met him, that was a good day.
I was actually buying some picks today, I've used jazz IIIs for years and after reading up about Paul Gilbert I wanted to try some thinner ones (.50 mil). surprisingly, I'm liking them so far.
Great video man! I've been waiting your videos for a few years now and learned a lot
Sweet picks and presentation box. Your Ghostfret is fast becoming my favourite looking guitar.
It's an awesome looking guitar :) I was going to buy one but I saw an ESP LTD MH series and ended up putting down a deposit it ... ghost fret dreams went poof
+BeardedViper Makes sense to me! I do like the idea of something different tho.
i recently purchased myself a rob chapman signature gravity pick, and i will never look back
changed the way i play \m/
Chappers I am loving that riff. As soon as I heard it, it resonated with me and now I must learn it. Very much intrigued to see how this solo album progresses.
When is the winner announced?
You're so generous Rob, that's a really cool prize.
$195usd for the case filled with picks.
Add shipping
+Rob Chapman chapman guitars should make acoustic
+Greg Hay "Free shipping on USA orders over $30" :)
+Rob Chapman is ot in d or am I stupid
+RockGuitarist1294 not everybody lives in USA bro
My fav pick. I think the chicken pick and tusq pick are a tiny bit better tonally but the gravity pick makes me play better. There is a very slight tradeof where it makes an unpleasant noise if the string rings and the gravity pick touches it and semi mutes it but that is the only drawback. For sheer playability it craps over everything.
can you put a different style to it? or is it more of a feel thing?
No restrictions - I specifically didn't give you a key or rhythmn
+Rob Chapman cheers man
+Timothy Tyree my question too-I already made a little something...
I think it just changes the tone very very slightly
Rob, I also acquired one of these wonderful Gravity picks in a JHS pedal I had purchased. This is always my go to pick weather playing the acoustic or electric. Keep up the good work!
But I can't play guitar that we'll yet
There is no way I can play that riff well.
+jordan minter
Just practice bro, many hours :)
+jordan minter more than a month available to practice...so PRACTICE, PRACTICE PRACTICE! you'll get it down :)
+Tay Beveridge just do your best, play it slow, make it sound cool... don't worry about the price, just give it a try. This will for sure help you develop your skills :)
+Tay Beveridge that's the way. just do it. I already tabbed this out and it really is a fun riff to play.
Good luck!
Thanks Rob! What fun this is.
I love watching your videos. I'll be practicing this rif. don't think I'll play it as fast as you can, but with some soul!!!
p.s. I'm coveting that box of Gravity Picks!
i have no facebook.. guess im done for
I'm in the same boat. Facebook fascists!!!
+larsheuker I don't have facebook either. I really dislike facebook
I don't really do social media well. Using TH-cam is generally as social a person as I get :)
Kyle James probably a good thing tbh it's like a drug when you first get it
I love that they always look like they're glowing
+rob chapman when did you go to the guitar institute? Was it when it was at Wapping? I went and did Shawn Baxters Rock 1&2 in '96/97.. Dave K was teaching then and even did some of my classes too.

I'd like to see you bathe in the picks to the ducktails theme 😁
Is it fine if I play it in standard instead of D?
I'll probably triple track guitars, and also add drums and bass.

Thanks for the heads up big brother, just ordered 3 of your Sigs. I have used Jazz III's for years now, But I'll give Gravity Picks a try.
I'll try one, thanks for the tip. I love the JD Jazz III

I legit flinched when the chicken noise happened! Loooool.
10:31 for riff
Rob, Thanks for your pick "geekiness." 😀
Hey Rob, is there any chance we'll be getting an offset body shape Chapman guitar in the future? If you'd release a jazzmaster style guitar I'd pick it up for sure.
The pick of destiny
Rob, I would love if you got back to me on this, is the riff open to artistic representation, as in am I allowed to change the tempo and intonation, and maybe even change genre?
and im over here rockin them free guitar center picks
Tuning is one whole step down, as far as I can tell.
Going to tune my guitar down and take a shot. Thanks Rob, I've needed a reason to learn more things by ear for a while now. Hoping I have a chance at this at least...
Cheers from the Netherlands
I would LOVE to have an assortment of pics like that!!
Was that the Expo 92 or 93 gig in Seville?
To learn that riff, would take me more than a month -.-.
Have tried learning by ear before, but it just doesnt workout.
+eenwieleraar Gotta keep at it.
+eenwieleraar Start with basic power chord songs, and simple pentatonic solos, and before you know it you can figure anything out!
+James Shephard +Go Outside Well thanks guys, will try! I always tried to learn riffs, maybe that was just to hard.
+eenwieleraar Its one of those things you have to suck at until it starts getting better. You'll get there!
+eenwieleraar Patience. Play to the radio - yeah, its pop songs, but they do have no guitars. And you really learn to play. Understand the keys. Song writing formulas.

Is it OK to do it on an Acoustic guitar-and are you in standard tuning or what?
Steel pick you mentioned. I started using Dava's with a steel tip and I loved the way it sounded, until I also noticed that it was destroying my strings! Especially the D string gets so flat and flat-sounded too.. I stopped using them.
May we know what tuning it is?
+Dom McMuffin "train them ears" (pretty sure it's d standard)
+Mark Parrott Drop B. Better get some high gauge strings.
+Dom McMuffin well you clearly see where he uses G chord shape, tune down until you get same chord.
+CanningPetto Don't give it away!!!
I don't think people realise I was asking if we could know, not saying that I need it.
Rob, do you use the same pick for electric and acoustic?
Gosh, you put open chords into a single-note metal riff!
Haha, GREAT!
That riff is one of the most amazing things I have ever heard come from a guitar! Plz bath in Picks!
I did it yes! but my guitar has a Floyd rose and I don't want to tune it down so I'd it OK to do it a full step higher?
So to check out out the riff in more detail I played the video at 0.5 speed, and Rob sounds like he is super drunk talking at that speed, hahaha
Any suggestions of where I could go from here tech wise?
Satriani gave you a pick? Do you still have it?
+CanadienAtheist Probably worn out from kissing it so much. :-)
+CanadienAtheist He ate it to absorb its power.

Are you going to announce the ghostfret meme cometition winner? I know it's been 3 months already, but i haven't found the announcement anywhere.. or did i miss something?
Can you tell me what tuning you were playing the riff in?
These picks are superb! Got mine from Gravity Picks UK. Free postage over £9 and next day delivery! Awesome picks
Ahhh damn I’m I too late for this win!, I would’ve won but there’s a time zone issue because I’m in San Diego, California! We even met at Guitar Center and you gave me the Gravity out of your pocket!! Love your show brother!!!
i would like to try the 3.0 triangle picks the dunlop big stubby 3.0 is great. i wonder how the gravity measures up.
Rob where did you buy that awesome guitar
Do they make left handed picks? or if you play left handed would they work if you play a right handed guitar left handed?
You have a BKP in the bridge?
so the riff can be in my own style and key right?
As someone who picks pretty hard, my Gravity pick (Rob's signature one) has worn down quite a lot over the few months I've had it. But saying that, it's without a doubt the best pick I've ever used! Even worn down, their still excellent.
Can you buy G Picks in the UK or dyou need to get them imported from the states?
Is there a certain speed the riff has to be played at?
Is it ok to do this on an acoustic?
I've been using Gravity picks myself for some time, they just hold up so fantastically and sound amazing!
Have you tried the Gold Series picks, yet? What do you think of them?
Does "in a music fashion" require good equipment (especially for recording)?
nice to see competitions. I personally wouldn't go to the effort of making video entries for a competition for anything less than a Les Paul (or similar), but will eat popcorn to see how many make the effort for some plectrums :)
Love you're videos mate, much love from the states
I remember as a beginner spending hours trying to figure out Pearl Jam's Alive solo by ear which basically meant pausing the CD every few seconds to figure out what he was doing. Good times.
I've been using Dunlop Max Grip 1.0 for some time now. I love them. I didn't ever had too many different picks anyway. Just the regular nylon stuff, a few stubby picks, the Jazz III by Dunlop and the Max Grips.
At what age did you start playing guitars and did you take lessons right away or did you first teach yourself?
think its really cool that your doing this, and incorporating teaching
do they have one that like a jazz 3 i really like the size and shape of the jazz 3 they just wear down so fast for me if so which one is that in particular is it id really like to try it out
Rob, Did you know where you did the Chapman tour in San Francisco is only a few blocks away from Satch's guitar tech's, Gary Brawer, shop? Cool little shop, great guys, and great techs.
that black ghost fret gives me good feelings in the groin...:D
Sigh.. Here's another contest that I can't enter because I'm not good enough lol
I run competitions aimed at players of all kinds of skill level - It was just time to make something for guys who have been playing a while :-)
+Rob Chapman no worries man, greetings from Italy :D
+Luca Bertuolo im with you
+Rob Chapman whats your opinion on dragon heart picks?
+Nino Morelli well clearly I prefer Gravity:-)
Standard tuning Chappers? ( if you said so, sorry, I missed it)
Amazing looking guitar. I want one bad!!! May I ask l ask your pickup selection, as shown ?
Cool guitar. Cool picks. Cool riff. Now, if would just bathe in them picks... Do it, Chappers. Do it!!!
Does the riff have to be at the tempo rob plays at the end or can you pick a tempo that you think would suit the riff best?
My interpretation is he wants somebody to make something of it, doesn't really matter the tempo, tuning ect, as long as the skeleton of the riff is there... "Make it musical"
does it need to be on an electric or can it be on a bass
hey rob can u at least tell us what tuning the riffs in??
I must agree with you rob great picks BUT they are so hard to get here in the UK ,Lee has a few old ones but seem he has not renewed with Gravity picks so far each to there own I like the standard polished .75 and 2.0 polished the challenge is not to try them but to find them :-) of to find some more ......love the videos keep them coming congrats on your new found success
you deserve it
Can we please play it in standard tuning?
so i once had 2 different gravity pick given to me and while they were cool i found they wore down really fast. the sharp tip is what made then great. once that goes they feel like a thick normal pick. i switched to Dragonheart picks. and its been about a year of owning my one pick from them and i just now started to notice that one of the 3 unique edges wearing down.
do gravity make thumb picks?
Funny how the competition ends on my birthday. Love the videos, Rob. Keep making People's faces melt.
Well 373,357 subscribers.... Divided by 365, indicates that roughly 1022 of his base is in the same position. Don't feel special.
im gonna buy my first real expensive guitar from riff city and its gonna be a ghost fret natural color! super excited man keep doing what your doing your great
just about got it tabbed out but can't figure out the tuning any ideas?
it sounds like d standard or drop d
What is the exact model of the guitar in this video? I know it's a Chapman.
What is that beautiful black chapman guitar in the background. I don't think i've seen that on here before? :O
Dang I want to join the contest but I might be a little late :S
This is so crazy, I'm performing satch boogie for my Alevel this Thursday! Was just practicing it
