    I played it back in the day on DOS and 3DO. DOS version ran a lot faster and the graphics were cleaner, but the 3DO version had superior sound quality and it felt a little less arcade style and more like a simulator, which I preferred.

    As there was only a select few great games for the 3DO back then , of coarse i bought it! Played the hell out it. Behind the drivers seat was a new experience for me. The crashes were hilarious because they defied physics especially on high speed wrecks. Another thing that impressed me, was actually going through the cities and country side. The older games, you were pretty much only going to see the city or mountains as a static background on the horizon never to get there. The 3DO was definitely ahead of it’s time that piss poor management killed …….again,again, and again! Makes sense that is was botched by a EA x-boss. Good to see the tradition continues today….
    I’ll only have rose colored lenses for the 3DO version

    Wondering if emulators were used for the capture.
    I know 3DO version of NFS is slower (but also the first, NFS came from 3DO) but I noticed 4DO emulator will perform like 30% slower if CPU is at 12.5mhz. You have to overclock at 15-18mhz to be closer to the original. So, depending on the emulator used, it might seem a bit slower than in real hardware. I was running code that was benchmarking the real machine CPU. Phoenix emulator is ok.

Hell, Saturn even has two WipEout games (the first two WipEout games were ported to Saturn for some reason, despite WipEout being purpose made as a European launch title for the PlayStation. WipEout 3 was the first WipEout exclusively available on PS)

    The PC version is undoubtedly the best version. Has smooth frame rate and graphics aren’t subject to pixelation. Of the consoles though, the winner is definitely PlayStation. Runs the game a lot smoother than the 3DO and Saturn

    • @Banzeken
      @Banzeken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The kind of PC hardware available in 1995 (when DOS version of NFS was new) was not powerful enough to play in hi-res (640x480 pixels) at a smooth frame-rate, so it depends on the angle from which you view the PC version of NFS; from today’s perspective or in retrospect. That said, it’s still a good version of the game, but you needed an expensive computer (back when a good PC was even more expensive, and before GPUs or 3D cards were a thing) to get it looking and running nicely when new.

    • @MainSequence1
      @MainSequence1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought I was smoother on Saturn.

    • @OpenGL4ever
      @OpenGL4ever 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Banzeken That's wrong. The PC just required a VLB or a PCI videocard and VESA VBE 2.0 drivers to run in 640x480 high-res resolutions at acceptable frames. At that time you could buy a 486DX4 100 Mhz or a Pentium 75 MHz.

    • @Banzeken
      @Banzeken 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OpenGL4ever You could get a Pentium 133 by September 1995 (when NSF was new) and that still would not handle NFS smoothly outside of interlaced (as opposed to progressive) 640x480 or 320x200. Really, though, what is your definition of “acceptable frames” here? I think that has to be established before any further potential misunderstandings occur. I don’t know what OP means with “smooth frame rate” but let’s assume it’s in the neighborhood of 30 frames/second, give or take. Problems occur when we use your DX4/100 example as a subject for running NFS smoothly at 640x480 when we consider the video titled *Escom 486DX4 100 MHz, tons of games & benchmarks* by Nocito87. NFS can be observed running at 320x200 at an OK frame-rate with slowdown still occuring (particularly with an external camera perspective and when driving through woods) and that’s possibly with lower detail settings. Can’t imagine how much lower performance would get above that. Plenty of 1995 already stressed out a Pentium 90 (which is a system I own), including Hi-Octane, Slipstream 5000, Mechwarrior 2, Screamer (etc.) and that’s at 320x200. I don’t believe for a second that 640x480 NFS would do any better on that same system, let alone a Pentium 75 or - God forbid - a DX4, VESA 1.2 or 2.0 or otherwise. It’s only a shame that I don’t remember how my P90 handled NFS at 640x480 and I shouldn’t be required to dig it out and plug it in just to prove a point.

    • @OpenGL4ever
      @OpenGL4ever 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Banzeken Yes, in 1995 you could buy faster CPUs, this makes it even easier. I was referring to 1994, because another VESA 640x480x256 game was released in that year.
      In the DOS days everything above 20 fps was acceptable.
      60 fps and more actually only became a thing at new games when the Voodoo 2 was released. And that was a powerful 3D accelerator that a game had to be written for or a supported 3d API had to be used in order to use its features. Vanilla NFS only had a software renderer as far as i know.
      You need VESA 2.0 to use linear frame buffer and stay in protected mode. VESA 1.2 was designed for real mode and thus comes with a speed penalty.

For me it seems like the other version's control is more friendly. But the graphics are not so good in the consol versions. The 3DO original was almost a completely different game than its ports. It was much more of a driving simulator than a racing game as the traffic is much more inconsiderate of your existence. The Playstation port is the worst looking, worst controlling, and the fastest. The Saturn port is noticeably slower than the Playstation version but plays noticeably better and also looks much better. The SE version on the PC is the best as it does run at 60 frames in DOSBOX with the best graphics by far and also has the most additional content. For me the top are the PC and Saturn versions.

    Man, the 3DO's CPU really works against it here in a very noticeable manner. It's CPU only had 12.5MHz as opposed to the Playstation's 33.8 and the Saturn's 2X 28.6
    When they weren't moving you could argue whether the 3DO or Saturn were better, but as soon as they started moving it became crystal clear that Saturn's version was vastly superior.
    Another interesting thing to note is how it seems (to me at least) that the Playstation's version is the best despite not quite having as high fidelity or frame rate as the MS-DOS and Windows versions. The speed is still really fast and the movements and music get me more pumped than the somewhat slower and toned down PC versions.

    Ms dos and windows are by far the most graphically superior. I would say of the consoles Saturn wins.
    3DO looks terrible

    Why would you even bother to compare PC to console in that era? PC always > than any console back then. No contest ever.

      The point was to showcase what the game looked like on the different platforms it was available on. Also yeah, PC gaming was leagues ahead back then

    Windows is the best one, Saturn best captures the 3D) original's vision while improving on certain aspects.
    DOS is more vivid, but the distant pop-in is a bit distracting.
    PlayStation is trying too hard to be different; different sky box, overly sharp visuals which aren't bad, but are trying too hard to make an unnecessary change. though it wins over the 3DO for the smoother and higher framerate.
    1. Windows.
    2. Saturn/DOS.
    3. Playstation
    4. 3DO
    5. I imagine a JAVA version would go here if there was one.

      One drawback to the PlayStation version is how, as much as I like the pixelated look, it makes it really hard to see distant objects. an Issue with many PlayStation, and some Saturn games compared to PC counterparts, like Tomb Raider, Need for Speed, Metal Gear Solid, etc.

    Trick question? They all look like crap; nonetheless, I’ve played all versions except for the PC port.
