Series Description: Welcome to the Complete Beginner Whittling Lessons Series! This series is intended for people who are completely new to whittling and looking for advice on how to get started. It starts with a series of four videos about what equipment and materials are needed for whittling and then there will be a series of projects that will teach the basics of whittling while completing specific projects.
Note that this series focuses on what I would call hobby whittling using dedicated whittling knives and wood that are specifically designed for whittling as a hobby. We will not focus on found wood carving, knives that are not specifically dedicated to whittling, spoon carving, bushcraft or other forms of whittling and woodcarving in this series.

I have four of the OCC tools and they are wonderful. But my new favorite is the deep Holler knife you definitely will not go wrong with either of those. Might as well spend a few dollars more and get the top-of-the-line not the bottom of the top lol

...though if a beginner was offered a Helvie (convex grind) I'd suggest they take it and figure out the sharpening. I find their handles are very comfortable. Even shapes I don't care for...
Thanks so much for putting together such detailed beginner videos. Any insight into what to look for in a handle? I am interested in the Deep Holler knife but the only handle they have in stock is called an A handle and it looks like it has a pretty big curve on it and a point on the end. Any thoughts on picking that up versus waiting for something else to come in stock?
Thanks. It's a hard question because so much about handles is personal preference. I don't have the A handle, but I do have one of the "curvy" handles which is somewhat similar. I find it to be generally comfortable and have no problem using it for extended periods of time. I wouldn't worry about the point on the end as the DHK handles tend to be fairly large and your hand is not likey to slide off over the pointed area.
Christopher has it right, just reshape the handle to what feels good and works for you. I've been using flexcut for years and have reshaped the handle and blades to what works for me. I couldn't imagine blowing $40 + bucks on a knife and not have the handle feel great then need to reshape it anyway. Boutique knives are no better when they need to be reworked anyway.

I know it is a challenge to get the Deep Holler knives in the UK. I would suggest reaching out to Chipping Away (www.chippingaway.com). They mention custom quotes for international shipping in their shipping info. I'm not sure any of the other retailers offer international shipping.

DHK knives are wonderful. Personally, I think the best blade that I’ve ever found. They’re not beautiful, but, they’re not meant to be. They’re meant to do the job comfortably. My favorite style of Handel is there medium. That’s not the size, that is the name of the handle. The blades are wonderful. I don’t think you would be sad about purchasing them. I have seven.
Plz just tell me what to buy. I’m on a tight budget so what is best for cheapest? Also do I just need 1 knife? What else do I need
You can get started with just one knife, yes. There will be plenty of projects you can complete with one knife and when you start finding projects you want to complete that require other tools you can add them to your collection. My recommendation for best cheap knife is the Flexcut Detail knife highlighted in the video and linked in the description. If you can't find one cheaply enough, then you can try a Beavercraft Detail knife, I would recommend the C8, it's about $12 on Amazon US and will work, but in my opinion the Flexcut will be easier. Another really cheap option to get started that I didn't mention in the video is a utility knife with replaceable blades. They are usually thin and very sharp, just get one that holds the blade very firmly.

Why not use a utility knife? is there a reason to get a carving knife instead of a decent utility knife?
You can use a utility knife. I think that's potentially a good way to get started and I've tried it some. Generally the shape of a utility knife makes it hard to make larger cuts and I've yet to find one that is very comfortable to hold. A dedicated whittling knife will be more versatile, last longer and more comfortable to use, but for the price a utility knife is probably the cheapest way to try out whittling with an extremely sharp blade.
