Adopting an adult cat can be so rewarding. They usually choose you. My last senior was Dot who, upon first seeing me when I visited her (then) home, she walked right up and begged to be picked up. Then did not want to be put down on the ground. Her first night home, after exploring the house, was spent sleeping on top of me. She was a lovely companion for about 8 years.

I adopted a 12 year old cat named Pixie! She was the BEST. She went on walks with me and my dog by following us! She rode in the car and enjoyed it. She followed me everywhere and she lived to be 18. I miss her terribly! She brought so much joy to our family. Don't overlook the older ones! They are so special. Cheers to all the cat lovers on this channel.

I had a very similar experience with my old girl Molly, she was geriatric when I found her and we got 8 good years with her. She was abandoned in an apartment and my friend took her in while trying to find a permanent home for her. My first time meeting Molly she immediately came and sat in my lap and refused to leave the entire visit. Miss my little cuddle fluff 💕

I was chosen by a kitten, cuz long story short, someone was offering young kittens (barely half week old) and one specifically approached me and while I was just checked which has what sex, she just kept approaching me and hugging my knee.
Now 6y later she was complaining I'm gone for more than 2h. But in return (since she become a cat going outside) I keep getting her preys on at least weekly basis. Friend vet helped me how to use those corpses to make them into safe food for her. I'm bad as a cook so my mom helps me mostly lol.

One of our rescue cats connected immediately with me. Turns out he is epileptic. So am I. We have the same neurological condition.🥺 We didn’t know until he had a seizure. I immediately knew what was happening and what to do, without ever having witnessed a seizure in an animal before. Pretty similar to humans. I’ll never forget the way he looked at me. It was like he knew that I knew, and that’s why he chose me.

She has this dramatic 'distress wail' which she'll do only when: she's about to vomit ; she's had a bad constipation poop ; I'm having a seizure. She also wailed it when she had a cardiac event. So my roommates will check on her first and then on me when she makes the noise.

We finally managed to catch a stray cat my ex neighbour and myself had been feeding for two years. He was an unneutered Tom. Turned up a month ago holding his front leg up. Managed to entice him into the kitchen and "Gotcha!" Straight to the vet the next day. Given anti-inflammatory medicine for him and he was deflead and wormed. Booked him to be neutered later that week. His leg swelled up again on the day he was due to be neutered so we told the vet to x-ray his leg while he was under anaesthetic. Luckily, nothing was broken but they shaved the area where the swelling was and found an abscess. That was cleaned. He was also microchipped and so it was that our stray found himself adopted into our family. Vet thought he was no more than 3 years old so still very young.
He seemed to prefer my adult son to me and one thing we did notice was that if you walked behind him he would flinch as if expecting to be kicked 😢 We thought he'd suffered some kind of trauma in the past as he walks with a gait on his back legs. Perhaps some woman kicked him at some time and that is why he is wary of me. He will allow us to pet him now but it is on his terms and he lets you know when he's had enough by swishing his tail and occasionally hissing (which he doesn't do so often now). Major breakthrough yesterday. I woke to find him curled up by my feet. When I went to bed last night he jumped up on the bed and curled up next to me. When I awoke this morning he was still there looking very relaxed.
Time, patience, good food, vet care and a lot of love is winning this gorgeous boy round. He is a black cat with striking gold/green eyes. I think he's beginning to realise he is safe and now being an indoor cat only will never be cold or hungry again.

You can almost even see that they were never able to relax in the way they behave, you know? The stray that I care for is so different than pet cats that I've known. Feels so rewarding when they finally show their first sign of trust 💖 You are right, you just need to put in the effort-just like befriending anyone else, really. I'm so glad you found your new friend, and more so that he found you 💞

      @little1942 ปีที่แล้ว +9

You are absolutely correct. We just adopted an adult male cat (going into week five) with a questionable history. All we really knew about him is that he was found in a cat colony in Philly and fostered for a few months before being shipped to Vermont (with more than a dozen of his colony) where he sat in a cage at the humane society for over 4 months and was the last to be adopted. He has been very guarded and defensive but every day he opens his heart up to us more and more. His first week he spent in my guest bedroom and growled at anyone who opened the door. Day four he actually let me drop some food and treats in front of him without hissing, so we opened the door to see if he would come out. He came out in 10 minutes and by 45 minutes later he rubbed up against my leg. It’s been very slow going, but he’s getting there. He’ll drop his guard for a minute but then it goes back up. And he does the “tail swish” thing when he’s on edge, too. So we are very mindful of that. By week two we’d only heard him purr twice when he tentatively curled up next to our feet for a few minutes. He’d get up and move away, then come back again. This past week, I decided to see if he would let me lay down on the bed with him. He was purring before he came up to me to give me nose kisses. Those purrs are coming more readily now. We go in and lay down with him (in the guest room) a couple times a day, but he still won’t lay next to us. Every once in a while, he’ll put his paws on my lap like he’d like to get on it, but so far hasn’t tried to. He won’t even get on my furniture except the coffee table. He’s even come into our bedroom at night but hasn’t tried to get in bed with us, yet. But you can see he wants to. To some degree, I wonder if he’s guarding heart because he might be moved yet again?
I have no doubt doubt that once he realizes he’s safe and this IS his forever home, he’ll be just fine. I’m patient enough to wait for as long as he needs to figure it out. He’s already captured our hearts.
Your Tom is very lucky to have found such a patient family to shower him with all the love he needs. I wish you many happy years with your handsome fellow.
      “A home just isn’t a home without a cat.” - Mark Twain.

@@little1942 It can be slow going but when they do come round, it's such a lovely feeling. My boy is still shy with me but this morning we had another breakthrough. He spent most of the night curled up near me and when I awoke this morning he was looking out of the window. I called him and he came then seemed to realise he'd let his guard down and jumped off the bed. Time and patience is the key. He no longer shows any interest in trying to escape and him being an indoor cat now, his fur is soft and silky and has a real shine. He also knows when it's feeding time and is usually the first one asking for food.
I was playing the piano last week and he jumped up beside me and sat watching what I was doing for about 5 minutes before jumping down again.
      He's slowly getting there.

That’s how my first cat chose me. Of all the kittens in the litter, he was the one that came up to me, sat down and looked up as if to say, let’s go home!
He was my soulmate for 19 years. We were homeless together, flew across the country together, played together.. he comforted me when I was so sad & depressed. He was amazing. It was so hard to see his health decline. I made apt to have him put down but couldn’t do it even tho he was suffering. I did make another apt but thankfully he passed quietly at midnight before the morning of his apt.
We stayed home from church that day, a beautiful sunny day. I spent nearly the whole day with him outside under the tree, him in his cushy cat bed. We buried him at my sister’s place in the country next to their dear dog Shep. Lots of beautiful flowers and ferns. I miss him.

@@candacedawn357 I agree! Younger cats need another one to play with. We did recently rescue a male kitten (~3 months old now) and our 2.5 yr old male just adores him from day 1. He grooms the little guy and the play and play-fight and share food. When Hugo (kitten) was coughing one day, Milo got all concerned and went by him and started licking his head. So sweet. I’m glad for them both.
Our older female ~7 years old never wants to play with Milo - she’s a grumpy b*** with him and still hisses at him sometimes sadly. She is very sweet with us tho. So I’m glad that we got Hugo and that he & Milo are really enjoying each other’s company.
Maybe Toots is so introvert bcs she came to us when my old cat was dying at age 19. She had a few years alone before we got Milo. One of my sisters adopted 2 of Hugo’s sisters. She only wanted one but we convinced her to take 2 so they would have each other to play with.

My son brought my new husband and I a crazy six week old kitten as “a wedding present”. Shark decided his favorite human was our four month old granddaughter. I assume he figured out that they were both babies and as such “maybe they should stick together.” When she was there, he was right there next to her. As she grew and showed him much “affection” by pulling his face off or carrying him upside down; he never retaliated. When they moved away when she was five, he always showed up to rub on the phone when we talked to her. He didn’t do that any other time. She would come back every year around the same time and he loved it! His last four years, he had diabetes. His last two was touch and go. During Covid, she was unable to come visit and that’s when his decline really started. Often, I couldn’t convince him to eat and would then get offended and scratch at the floor like he was covering up his waste. We don’t expect him to live too much longer when she finally came for a visit and try to prepare her. Within a day of her arrival, he started eating EVERY meal and generally seamed to liven up! It was like her visit gave him the impetus to live and her prolonged absence was more than he could bear. She missed coming again this past year due financial reasons. He rapidly declined on what would have been her normal arrival…just before her birthday which was on a Sunday. We prayed he would make it past that date so she wouldn’t have to grieve on her birthday. Since it was a holiday, the Vet was not opened. It wouldn’t have mattered, he was dying and there was no stopping it. He made two days after, when we could finally get him in to the Vets. I’d spent the whole night on the floor with him checking for a heartbeat every few minutes. He looked like he was already gone most of the night. About 10 am all of a sudden, he popped up and cuddled with his “surrogate” father, Sammy, who gave him a thorough bath, including a deep ears cleaning. Because you can’t leave the house with a dirty face and ears. Sammy had mentored Shark as baby and even let him “nurse” on him. I’d never seen a male cat allow a kitten to “nurse” off him before, but that is what happened. After his bath, his energy was zapped and Shark laid back down. When it was time to take him to his appointment, I had some things to take out to my car before I got Shark and picked up Sammy and said, “you should say your goodbyes.” When I came back in, Sammy was still lying next to Shark but his arm was now around Sharks body. Sammy said goodbye the only way he could.
Our beautiful furry Shark is buried with a picture of his favorite human and his favorite snacks: cheese puffs. Sammy is still with us but when his time comes, he will be buried next to the kitten he loved so tenderly.
Sometimes cats choose their favorite humans for their own good reason. I was fortunate enough to come a close second to baby girl he loved more than his own life. He was almost 15 at his passing. You were cherished in world, Shark. You will always be in heart.

Visiting one Christmas, sisters and I were sitting on the floor playing cards. Cat kept wandering over to sit in my lap for a while then return to other side of the room. About time my sister complained that the cat liked me best, I recognized that she was leaving me to sit on heat register when heater was running and had selected me as warmest alternative spot for when heater was off. When listening for it, was easy to hear whether heat was on 🤣.

Years ago I was caught off guard by a plot between my daughter and her friend. I wasn't sure what they were whispering about as I drove the friend home, but I soon found out. The plan was to take one of their kittens home. Being a big softy when it comes to cats, that's just what we did. My daughter named him Kadaj after a character in Final Fantasy. Upon returning home, I sat on the sofa to look at my mail. Kadaj immediately ran over, jumped on my lap and bit me on the chin. I figured he was marking me as his territory or thanking me for giving him a new home, knowing I was the decision maker. I know how smart cats really are.
We had him a couple years, but since we couldn't have our cat outside in the community we lived in, and Kadaj was prone to sneak out, it was difficult. My sister suggested we try trading cats. Her cat Spooky was about 10 years old, didn't like going out and didn't get along with her other cats. This way Kadaj could be in and out as he pleased. I hesitated, but finally agreed. Spooky thrived at our place and soon became queen 👑 of the household. Kadaj took a few days to acclimate to my sister's other cats. I think she had three or four others at the time, but it wasn't long before her cat Cowboy and Kadaj were inseparable. Since she lived out of state, it was a couple years before we visited. Upon seeing me Kadaj ran over and literally ran up the front of me, wrapped his paws around my neck and started purring in my ear. It was like he was saying "thank you" for his new home. Sadly though, later during our visit he ran into the road and was killed. I'm glad my daughter wasn't there and my son and I were inside. It still brings tears to my eyes, but at least his last days were happy. Cowboy took it really hard though and may have seen the accident. He moped and didn't eat for days. Animals grieve just as we do.
Spooky reigned as queen of our castle for about thirteen years, but got sick and passed away just six weeks short of her 23rd birthday. Since this time my two favorite types of cats have been tortoise shell and yellow tiger stripe.

I stayed with my Aunt for a few months and for some reason even though I never had any particular like for cats and this cat was known for not liking people other than my Aunt, she took a liking to me. At first she would sit by the door so I would talk to her about the issues I was experiencing at the time. Every night she would get a bit closer and eventually she started sleeping on my bed despite never doing that when my cousin slept there. Sadly my Aunt passed away a year or so ago (god rest her soul) so I figured we could give her a good home. Mia is like a different cat now, much more social and doesn't hide away all day like she used to and of course she sleeps in my room. Maybe there was an element of fate there somewhere, I feel like we were meant to be together somehow!

I miss him.

It actually took me a long time to learn and accept the part about cats having different personalities. I’m from a big family and we’ve had a lot of cats over the years but I was never really any cats favorite person for the longest time no matter how much I loved them (especially more than any of our dogs). So I was very much, becoming a little desperate and clingy when we adopted our last cats Bitty and Simon. Bitty I couldn’t bond with because my sisters hid him in their closet for two weeks caring for him without our parents knowledge. And Simon I was definitely clingy I won’t lie. Everyone spent some time with him when we got him. But for whatever reason they just stopped. I was very much, I love cats so I was very excited and just kept going into the base camp we had set up for him even if he was hiding and wouldn’t let me pet him. I even gave up my favorite blanket for him, I wanted this cat to feel safe here. I’m his favorite person now and my family does refer to him as “your cat/my cat” (which melts my heart I swear). But it’s. He has grown and changed so much since we adopted him (2016). He used to never come when we called his name. And when I would attempt to let him sit on my lap he’d immediately climb off. And it was a good two-three years where I just stuck to sitting next to him and petting his head and cheeks and him only sleeping at the very end of the bed. But now he’s a total lovebug, he walks up and lays on my lap unprompted, or lays against me for cuddles or walks to my room first when he’s done playing outside. We have a good and strong bond and I’m genuinely scared to think he’s entering senior years. But my point is, if anyone out there thinks it’s you or that cats will never like you; it’s not true. It really isn’t. Just keep showing up and learn about them and what they need. They’ll love and respect you back. And maybe even change into a happier cat. I swear.

I have chronic pain throughout my body. My cat always seems to know where it hurts the most on any given day. He will drape himself over the most painful area, even if it's awkward, and lie there for a long time purring on it. I know he's comforting me on purpose, maybe even trying to heal me.

I felt like I grew up with my cat, even if she advances in age faster. I got her as a kitten when I was a kid and loved her ever since. I learned that she preferred to be more independent and lazy, so I didn't annoy her with too many hugs and pets, and let her ease into a relationship. She started sleeping with me and laying nearby. Now I'm older and so is she, and she still sleeps with me and even lays in my lap. She also at times provides comfort better than my dog lol. I felt like I was having a panic attack in bed because I kept getting anxious, and she jumped on my bed and kneaded on my belly, and my heart calmed down! I also earned the trust of my friend's cat better than them. My friend had 3 siblings, all younger, so it was always loud. The elder cat they adopted was fearful and shy. When I visited, I sat down and spoke softly and didn't ever reach to grab her like my friend does. Over time she came out from under the bed and rubbed on me. Then the next visit, she came into my lap! It was so heartwarming! It's the best feeling to earn an animal's trust.

I have a black cat named Bear. He was a feral kitten to start out. One day, he was walking thru the neighbor's back yard and I called out to him. I had my eye on him for awhile, but he was part of a large litter that would all run if you approached. He stopped. Looked at me. Then came running, stopping at my feet and looking up at me. I picked him up and he started purring, his first interaction with a person. I asked him his name, and he spread his arms wide, like a Grizzlies bear... he's sleeping next to me right now. Currently have two cats, Tabitha and Transient.
I was working on my car when a cat walked by. I spoke to it, introduced myself, and pet the cat. The cat sniffed the car. Then I needed to bring my tools inside. The cat followed me in and wouldn't leave. She's been here ever since.
Transient was a different story. She would come by and let us pet her. She climbed up and held on and wouldn't be put down. She needed some hugs. My wife and I spent the next two or three months getting her used to the idea of coming inside, and now she's an indoor cat.
Tabitha (Car Cat) is very affectionate, but also very attentive. If she thinks I'm busy, she won't bother me (I have be careful to stop what I'm doing to pet her or she feels neglected after a while). She will lay down in the room, content to be nearby. Transient, on the other hand, sees a lap and shoves her way into it, frequently displacing my laptop or whatever else used to be there.
Transient is slowly learning from Tabitha, and it's hilarious to watch.

so, when i was 19, a stray cat adopted us and made it a blatant point on numerous occasions to let everyone know that *i* was his person. he was super friendly with everyone, but i was his. had a few other cats over the years (difficult for them to pick anyone other than me as their person, since i lived alone).
more recently, had a cat who belonged to my husband a handful of years before we met...and she absolutely adored him; however, if she felt bad in any way (car sick, medical issues, etc), she always sought me out - her first encounter with me was when my husband moved in with me and he brought her...she got really car sick (foaming at the mouth). i sat with her for over an hour, calming her down...getting her used to me, but also trying to soothe her from her "feel bads". as such, she immediately associated me with "feel goods" (which was especially sweet b/c whenever she felt bad, she always sought me out over my husband). kind of bittersweet, too, b/c she ended up developing cancer this past year and as she began feeling worse and worse, she essentially became my shadow for the last handful of months of her life.

Our elderly cat, Babs, passed away last year. My sister, Jen, was definitely her mommy. Babs always slept in her bed because I’m a light sleeper and always keep my bedroom door closed. Babs was mostly laid back and for the most part, ignored me.
Jen had a rough time in 2020-21. She battled cancer throughout 2020 and had a laryngectomy in early 2021. Then, Babs passed away later in 2021. Jen was lost without her favorite companion and as Christmas approached, asked for a kitten.
While I was sad that Babs had died, I was actually enjoying not having litter box duty (the dust was bad for Jen) and peace in the house as the occasional cat & dog spats between Babs and our pekeapoo, Dixie, were forever ended. (I’m most definitely Dixie’s mommy.) I really wasn’t ready to bring another cat into our home. But Jen had lost so much, I just couldn’t say no. So, when one of my Facebook friends posted about needing to find a home for a stray kitten, I said we’d take it.
However, things didn’t turn out as expected. Leo, as our new kitten was named, chose me as his mommy. Not Jen. He follows me around, sleeps outside my door (just like the dog), tries his hardest to aggravate me, and crawls into my lap demanding that I scratch his tail. I feel like the girl who stole her best friend’s boyfriend.
I think Leo choose me because Jen can’t speak easily, and when she does, her voice is rough and gravelly. But also, Leo has a much different personality than Babs. As mentioned, she was laid back, and not particularly curious about the world around her. She wasn’t able to jump much higher than a couple feet, so she wasn’t into much. Leo, on the other hand, is curious about EVERYTHING! He has to check out anything new brought into the house. He’s much more athletic and can easily jump onto high places. He’s much more extroverted and is not afraid of strangers like Babs was.
Of the two of us, Jen is the laid back one. I tend to be more extroverted than Jen, so that may also be why Leo chose me. Whatever the reason, looks like I’m “stuck” with him. 😂

    • @Nightdominia
      @Nightdominia ปีที่แล้ว

Not always a bad thing to be "stuck" with two animals. Before we put our Bulldog down in January at the ripe old age of over 12 years old, she and my current cat used to act like siblings. The cat would pull pranks like spiking her butt while sitting on an end table, but would run for the hills when she got rare spurts of her old pep back. I'd end up "covered in fur" due to the dog laying between my legs and the cat becomes a furry scarf. They would even go on short ventures together outside (both leashed and harnessed up, of course). It's quite the fun experience. My cat mourned my dog's passing for months after she was gone. Now I get dirty looks from my cat for bringing in a giant superball of a pup into the house that doesn't realize she's a big 60 pound chaos monster. 🤣

6 years ago my mom bought me a beautiful black kitten. She is very shy (now I wonder if it's my fault, since she spent the first month of so in my room without much interaction with the world) and she allowed basically only me to get near her, pet her and pick her up. She used to be a constant presence in my life: she was always in the same room as me even though she doesn't really like the first floor because it's usually busy.
Then 3 years ago she had a litter, and we decided to keep one kitten for my sister. This one is much more active and outgoing, but the two cats seem to dislike each other (even though they are mom and daughter) and they fight often, which usually results in my cat backing off since she's more timid and easily frightened.
The thing is that for some reason the -not anymore- kitten seems to be in love with me (?) and by that I mean that she lives on my lap, she sleeps with me in my bed, she follows me anywhere in the house (I can't even close her outside the bathroom or she scratches the door) and she gets worried when my family yells at me (I have a fairly big house and sometimes yelling is the only way to communicate). While I'm honored to be "the chosen one" and I love her and her company, this led my actual cat to avoid my room first and then me altogether, because everywhere I go the kitten follows..
I try to actively look for her and spend some time together, but the little one tackles me and they end up fighting.
I don't know what to do, I kinda miss my cat but I don't want to shoo the kitten away either

So very interesting. We have 8 cats - oops, now 9. The oldest is Nicky - who was a stray, a black & white, friendly little boy. After 3 days of feeding him outside - we just opened the front door & invited him in. So cute - he walked all around the house checking every room, came back to us & said "Meow Mew" (interpreted as "I'm staying". He is old now about 12 yrs. young. Two are from the first litter under the house - now about 8 yrs. old. Five are from another litter from different parents & they are about 5-6 yrs. old. Now Mikey (Michael). Vet said he is about 3 yrs. old. At first we thought he was a feral cat - fed him & gave him a water source. This went on for about 5 months - until one day I could get close & pet him - briefly. Over time we (my Husband & I) could pet him more. He would disappear for a day, then longer but would always come back for food & rest from looking around for females here in the SW Arizona Desert. Guess he knew how to avoid our local Coyotes. The last time he came for food it was after 2-1/2 weeks (thought we lost him). He was pretty beat up. Gave him his morning meal & the evening meal I scooped him up & brought him inside. He was kept in the Den, went to the Vet for check-up & necessary shots. Then appointment for neuter. Back to the Den to recover from the wounds (which I kept treating with ointment) & the neutering. So had to introduce him gradually to our 8 cats. He would hide at first & eventually just wandered throughout the house keeping away from 2 or 3 who did not like a new cat here. Anyhow, he is right here next to me in my recliner. If I go into the kitchen or bathroom - he follows me & stays in that room until I am done in there. I am his person even though my Husband can pet him - Mikey always come back to me. My Husband is Max's (our big orange tiger from the first litter) favorite person. So, yes, cats do pick their favorites. Judi

From day one my cat chose me, tried pulling my hand through the bars of the kennel at the shelter. Five months old then and now 12 years old, there were a couple of elderly cats there but they had papers showing they were adopted, and the main coon had no interest and I knew there'd be run ins with the long fur. She does have a couple of people she will let pet and even show some affection in return but it's my lap she will sit on and I may pick her up.

I have way too many cats. But unless they're getting accepted to the shelter or adopted, they'll always have a home with me. We found a very young, unspayed female living under our shed, we adopted her into our family. There was a containment breach and she had kittens. (We hadn't even been aware that she went into heat) then about a year later, during moving chaos, there was another breach. More kittens - her daughter's this time (lock-in and personal health issues caused me to miss the spay=neuter clinic days) But they are all beautiful kittens with such distinctive personalities. They will have a loving home here until they get adopted. Currently waiting on information on this year's clinic. We are not missing it again, lol.

I am the favorite person for most of my cats because I'm the only one who leaves my bedroom door open (because its broken and can't close) so the all come into my room and pile on my bed or on me at night. I also have multiple spots in my room where they can sit. Whenever any of them are sick or injured, I'm the one who gives them medicine, treats wounds, etc.

I gently would pick up my Mom's cat and put her in my lap. Giving her a couple of pets and letting her go if she wanted. It took a long time but she finally was comfortable enough I wasnt going to restrain her. Having her sleep on my lap was amazing.

I have been adopted by my former roommates 22 years old Norwegian Forrest Cat who refuses to get out of my face. She's a real sweetheart but demands constant attention and as soon as I stop petting crawls up my chest and into my face. She's only the third cat I've ever met that loves peanut butter. And has to get her fix several times a day

This anecdote had me giggling aloud, thank you for that! Norwegian Forrest cats are very majestic looking in nature! Awe she seems sweet, sounds like she requires lots of attention. My old boys are 13 brothers from the same litter and are Tuxedo cats! They are the sweetest and are really amazing cats! They love attention because they love people! They also can be chill with not getting attention. Indoor/outdoor so the fat boy loves to lay in the leaves (it’s currently fall here) and just enjoy the outdoor air. His brother also likes to go outside, although he usually stays inside more when the weather is colder.

Another thing that makes it easier to take care of and make your cat happy is to adopt two at the same time, preferably the same age. Kittens will keep each other more amused than you could ever do. Besides which it's great fun watching their antics. 😂

Ah! Respecting a cat's space. It reminds me that a way I've gotten several cats, over the years, to be well-behaved indoors is to establish spaces in the house they can call their own. Having a comfy perch area at a window is something they love.

I have a weakness for stray cats, and they know it. First stray I ever picked up walked to my front door and waltzed in when I opened it. Second one was skittish until I sat on the ground, at which point she came over and put her front paws on my legs. 3rd one was very timid and running from me and anyone that saw him, so I just sat on the ground and said "hi baby, come here!" And he ran right over into my lap. He more than all my other cats definitely chose me over my roomates. He's a scaredy cat because he's he's hard of hearing, and his meows sound like a broken squeaky toy, so I always respond to them in a similar high tone. He always snuggles me under the covers and follows me around the house :)
I had to rehome the first kitty because he had to be an "only child" and is much happier without other cats. The second two are still with me and the only cat I've picked up from an adoption agency lol
They're all big sweeties and like watching the screen when I play computer games, but Peaches has certainly chosen me more than the others

We have and had many cats, rescues and full breeds. Wether you buy or adopt, the final choice is made by the feline. Ofc, feeding, cuddling, playing and taking their personality into account helps for sure...............but if they dont pick you, you'll get just a portion of their love.

I use to have two cats, now one. Both would travel with me as a truck driver. Sometimes they would meow at me when I would get back into my rig, and I would tell them the plans for the trip. One would always meow back while the other just listened. Both were so silly.
As for what happened with the one cat, he had passed of old age.

    My current cat is nuts.
Every day whenever i sit in front of our PC to play or work, she'd jump up onto the desk and lay there. She only does that if she needs anything like asking for food or water from my mum or brother but in my case she does it to get pets.
She even learned to press keys on the keyboard to annoy me if i don't pet her.
A few months ago she even started jumping onto the desk around the usual times of day i'd be sitting there and would get very annoyed and loud if i don't use the PC with her.

Yes! So true. I have five myself. Rescued except my sweet Cassie. I went to pick up a kitten from a litter. All four beautiful female calico's. Cassie was the one that kept coming to me and wanted to lay in my lap. I took her. This was ten years ago. My tuxedo male, of five from a litter. I sat on the floor trying to get noticed. The only one that played with me was Kixx. So I took him. Taz, I visited a shelter to give them a large bag of dog food and I decided to see the kittens because one worker told me they were no longer going to house kittens/ cats any longer, just dogs. I was not planning on getting a cat, I had two already at that time. As soon as I came into the kitten room, Taz ran over to me and wanted to snuggle in my neck/ hair. She was just a cuddle bug. I would put her back down, she would run back up to snuggle back into my neck and hair. The worker said, I think she is telling you she wants to go home with you. I tried a couple times to walk away, Taz followed. So yes, she came home with me. My other two to make five, were no different. 😸💕❤️💜💗

This is exactly what we have done, instinctively. The cats that come to us (and in two instances, crawled all over us) came home with us. Not always the cutest ones, but the ones we click with. A neighbour lost her cat a few years ago and asked us to come with her to choose a cat from a shelter. She was initially drawn to a glamorous looking cat. But a less objectively attractive one came up to her and rubbed her legs. My friend still wanted to get the pretty but aloof cat. But when we reminded her that we don't choose cats, they choose us she picked the scruffier one. That cat is her life now. She never regretted allowing her cat to choose her.

@@KellieAndersonfoodtoglow this is similar to how I got my cat. I went to the shelter and saw a beautiful siamese cat, I tried to play with her but she almost scratched me (I am usually good with cats and don't get scratched like that). And then I noticed the cat 'next door' was rubbing the cage door. She is an ordinary looking tabby cat, I instantly fell in love with her but I hesitated a little bit because of her look (she's beautiful too but not my favorite type). and for the next few days I visited them again and again in the shelter. The Siamese cat was still indifferent but that tabby cat was so passionate. In fact, all the other cats were indifferent, only that tabby cat was so eager every time she saw me. Long story short, I brought the tabby cat home and I am so glad that I didn't choose look over personality because Cocoa is such a great loving cat!

I've always made an effort with them and bonded with them since they were born (partner and I decided to keep a litter of 4) and ever since they came into the world I loved on them and I think they were spoiled from the start. Now at almost 5 years old all 4 of them are very much affectionate with me and love the attention they get and they are so wonderful 🥰

Curious about whether bonds can be developed over shared events (for instance one of my cats almost died due to a paralytic tick, I’m Canadian and was living over in Australia so I had no idea they even existed). Once I saw the paralysis has hit in I rushed him to the 24 hour emergency vet and they managed to fix the issue and counteract the venom. Since that happened he’s been WAY more attached (ie. sleeping on top of me when I go to bed, jumping on my lap whenever I am sitting down even sometimes on the toilet and following me around like a dog)

All of the stray cats I've tamed have made me their favorite, while my indoor cat made my dad his favorite. Mabye it's because I had to give the stray cats so much attention. For a couple of my cats, it took a couple weeks of sitting outside with them for them to let me pet them, while others just took a couple days. My parents got me my indoor cat when I was 5 but he didn't like how hyper I was.

I got my big kitty when she was already three years old. She lived with a friend, her family and three other cats, but the cats didn't get along very well despite being related. So she spend most of her time alone in the kitchen and living room, while the others stayed in the rest of the house. The first time I visited my friend, my now cat crawled into my bag and didn't want to get out, so it wasn't much of a surprise when a few days later I got a call asking if I was willing to adopt her. I've been a proud cat mom for six years now and I wouldn't trade her in for anything, she's the best and everything I could have wished for in a cat 😌

My lovely kitty cat named stormy adores me, whenever I am downstairs she will meow and always want to get love from me, even taught her to come outside with me when I feed her lol, she always kinda had some affection towards me when we first got her but after my sister finally moved out she really warmed up to me, my sister would try and trap her in her room so she wouldn’t get a lot of time with me but right as she finally got out I laid down next to her one day and started scratching her ears from then on she and I have a wonderful bond… another thing to add I did get my sister a older cat when she finally settled in a place she was a lot better with that cat and the two of them are also the best of friends
