Just discovered this video and the tip of using tape to place on the winding drums is spot on. I have a "Grandfather" clock made by William Worsley Kent in Manchester. My father purchased the clock in Manchester sometimes in the early 1950's and it has been in the family since then. The clock went through a complete overhall 2 years ago and now works again perfectly. It has had a much travelled life with the family, moving from GB to Kenya, then back to GB, then to Greece, Belgium and now lives in Switzerland. Since being here "Grandfather" has been moved three times with a fourth and hopefully last move on the horizon in February 2025. I am the current custodian after the passing of my parents.
I just purchased a circa 1760 tallcase clock from an estate and this video was spot on. Thanks, Gary. I was even able to pack, move and reassemble the clock at home all by myself (don't try this unless you have a few muscles) because this helped me break it down safely.

Our family long case is similar to the one worked on here. Small differences like the side windows being rectangular, lack of ornate fret-work on top, and presence of a "strike/silent" setting. Name on the face is James Chalk, and I assume it to be of either English or Scottish origin (with German movement?). My brother is the current custodian.
Hi i am an a english clockmaker first you should always stop the pendulum before removing the weights if you take the weights off first there is no power so the escape wheel is motionless and the pallets keep swinging and could damage the escape wheel teeth
Antique banjo grandfather clock sides i sprayed with a liquid gold. Has psintings on side and front.Now has a dull grayish wash like look where the liquid gold touched. HOW DO I RESTORE THE ORIGINAL LOOK?
Can you tell me how to adjust the day of the month dial on an old grandfather clock. It was working a week ago, now moving or moving a little stuck in the middle of a date. I can't see anywhere that it fits a gear so I assume its some kind of friction based. Is this a hard fix?. The clock is from 1685. I can't imagine it being that complicated but Im not the expert. What do you think. ? Thank you!!
The clock in the corner is bending forwards. A knowledge of me has a tall case clock that (if you stand in front of the clock) slightly bends over to the left. Is this normal?
I love your videos.... My wife and I were at a garage sale this past Sunday. The two women had lost there father and were in the proccess of selling the items he owned in the garage. In the garage was a 7ft. grandfather clock covered in dust. I asked if it was for sale and I was able ot get it for $80. I am no clock expert but want to clean and get this clock back to working condition. My question is how do I find out more about this clock? It has MADE IN Germany (0) Jewels unadjusted 4 \ 6 7 and JAK Original Kieninger.
Leon, you don't have to wind up the chime function! The clock will run without it. If there are 2 winding holes in the face, wind the right side only. The left is usually the hour strike/chime.
NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will be amazed at how soon you will adjust to the sound of the chimes in fact your sleep will be disturbed when it is NOT chiming. Serve the clock and especially its maker the honor they so rightfully deserve and allow the clock to do as it was intended and proudly sing and come to life as it has done for decades!!!!!
Quick question: should we use or avoid certain kinds of tape when taping down the cords to the drums to avoid leaving residue? Looks like you use masking tape?
+Gary Sullivan I believe it's the same as calling a dial a face. If one needs a replacement dial they can be found in catalogs or if one needs a dial repainted , there are those that do this work. You can't find a replacement face.

Can u remove the weights without disassembling the whole top pc so it can be moved??

That happened to us. At first my wife had a hard time sleeping. Now she does not want to sleep without it. Comforting.@@bodo4202
