Buying a Motorcycle in Bangkok & The Make-Over Begins

  • In this episode we travel to Bangkok, Thailand to purchase a replacement motorcycle for the scooter which was sold in a previous episode. After checking out the new bike, the purchase is finalized and the bike is delivered. The next day we take our new Yamaha XJR400 to a repair shop (Two Wheels in Bangsaen) where the make-over and customization begins. Enjoy the Ride!
    Special Note*
This genre of small, inline 400cc Japanese motorcycles were extremely popular in Japan and elsewhere years ago but to my knowledge were never sold in Thailand. The ones available in Thailand have generally all been imported as used one-offs which require a large duty to be paid upon the initial registration process. The result of this is the ones totally legal for everyday street use are a bit expense and rare. Anyone considering a similar purchase should keep this in mind and I would only recommend one of these if it has been previously registered and has a green book.

You never stop changing gear with a 400 cc inline four. I remember riding one in Tokyo, a Honda CB-1. I hated it, but each to their own.
It's good to know a really good bike shop.

Very nice! Looks like that 100 baht/day meal budget is panning out! I've done this before and the only problem I had is that when done I had built a bike that is high on the list to get stolen. Figure out how to park this one inside your apartment and never let it out of your sight!!!

Interesting to hear your comments about the origins of the 400cc in line four in Japan. As you probably remember Honda made the CB400F in the 70s and this was a very successful bike in the UK where I am from. I went to Thailand in 2000/2001 and during that time I rented another Honda 400 four for a few days. I even have a nice picture of me sitting on it wearing what passed for a helmet in those days whilst 3 Thai kids look on. I don't see a way of posting that on here though. I hope to be back in the Pattaya area when we are able to travel

The best sounding muffler for a motorcycle I've heard is made by Diablo, the guys who make mufflers for Lamborghini's. It makes a medium size bike growl and sound big without making raspy obnoxious noise. Each to his or her own but I don't like Akrapovic. I'm a wildlife photographer and loud raspy mufflers would make me miss a lot of wildlife shots. Regardz from Chiang Mai.

That's one of the biggest drawbacks about thailand. That a bigger CC motorbike like I have in america would cost a arm and a leg in thailand. The amount of rain also is a other drawback to the motorcycles that most guys have in america. Rain gets to the nut's and bots on most bikes that we would drive in america. I had a honda pcx 150 in thailand. Its was very easy to get drive in pattaya in the rush hours and rain was easy to clean to clean off the bike.

The lines of your new ride, especially the tank reminds me of my favorite ride among many: an '82 Yamaha XJ750 Seca painted in the most beautiful red ever. Only downside was it had a 4 speed gearbox. Even after 3 years, I'd still find my toe looking for a top gear that wasn't there. $600 for all that?? Amazing! Last time I took a big bike into a US shop for a timing chain replacement (Kawasaki Concours) it was $1000+, in 2005!!!.

I quite liked the stubby after-market 4 into 1 exhaust and the original adjustable rear shocks appeared decent quality (unaware of their service factor) and you spoke of replacing the wheels (no pun intended 'spoke') which I also thought were very acceptable. Still await the finished product with baited breath.

Yes you can, but have to check they take cargo. Sleeper trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai normally have a cargo carriage, and the roads up there are fantastic in the mountains. However there is a drawback. You can only transport scooters up to 125cc, and if you want to really enjoy your ride I think you need at least 250cc...only my opinion
