- Elizabeth Gilbert is famous for her self-discovery memoir, Eat, Pray, Love - the international bestseller that became a travel phenomenon, a Hollywood movie and an inspiration to women the world over. But before she was a poster-girl for finding yourself through travel, she was a much-praised novelist and a National Book Award winner, with four books under her belt.
Her first novel in 13 years, The Signature of All Things - a wildly imaginative literary page-turner - has met with a rapturous critical reception.
In this conversation with Caroline Baum, Gilbert reveals the stories and influences behind the book’s scientific trailblazer Alma Whittaker - and her grappling with the ethical, social and sexual constraints of the era in which the story is set. Whittaker, we learn, is a character constructed of minutely considered decisions by the author.
Gilbert also shares how she achieved a fine balance between the historical and contemporary - and how she sets about voicing the narration in her work.

Elizabeth's talks,interviews,etc... are so rich and delightful.You can hear her speak for hours and never get bored.And there's always something to learn.
Hello ,my name is christine from Hamilton, Ontario, I just want to say that I'm 59 years old and I've never pick up a book my whole life, my brother bought me Eat Pray love for Christmas and I've been wanting to see that movie but never did ,so one day I was thinking I'm going to pick up that book and try and read it ,well I could not stop reading it ,it was amazing u are amazing it made me feel like I could feel what u went threw ,I could relate, now I plan on reading every book u have out . I listen to you on TH-cam as much as I could ,u make me feel like I can do anything so thank u so much for writing such amazing books ,keep them coming 😊❤🦋🌈

for me, i skim a book first to see if it's worth reading, & if it is, i read slow, & maybe go over a paragraph or two, or some pages so that i can let the words sink in.
or to wonder how i would say it differently...or what made it perfect just the way it is.
& to let the words reverberate off the inner walls & canyons...

I think she underestimates how humiliating rejection for men can be, but most men have to get used to that and be strong. They get a lot more often rejected than women will ever be, so they learn to get passed this pain and not be crushed by it.

I just don't think it's that serious. Why should you be emotionally wrecked just because someone isn't interested in screwing you? Are men actually IN LOVE with every woman who declines their offers??? I highly doubt it. It's not humiliating, that's just your ego talking.
It's a bad idea to tie your identity to another sentient human being who has their own free will.
