I remember when I first heard this. I was 15, and had been a Moz devotee since I was 11. I was on my way to queue for hours, at HMV in Manchester, to get Morrissey's autograph, on the day Vauxhall and I was released. This was well before the internet let you hear everything long before it came out. My friend's older brother came to pick me up in his pale green, barely functional Skoda. He put the album on as I sat myself down in the back, and by the time my buttocks had found their place, I was in musical heaven. It was like all I'd been waiting for, in those years since Viva Hate (although I liked Kill Uncle and loved Your Arsenal, this felt like pure Morrissey, more than those albums did), and then some. I fell in love with this song that very day, and now, as a decrepit 42 year old, I am still there, in the back seat of that car, every time I hear this song kick in. I never did get to the front of that queue, by the way, but still what a wonderful day.
@thenewmasses I think this period was the most emotional for Morrissey, since three close friends of him (Mick Ronson, Tim Broad, and Nigel Thomas) died. You can hear it in the songs of Vauxhall, they sound incredibly emotional, personal and peaceful to me, and they lack a lot of his usual wit and rocking sounds of his earlier work.
I wish I'd rushed up and embraced him there as well. Best of Vauxhall and I? Phew! That's a hard task as so many of those songs are so brilliant - just got the CD after losing the cassette some time ago and was glad again to hear the 'lazy Sunbathers' that's not on TH-cam. But yes, I keep coming back to this one. He's mellowed it - not puny brothers any more. But this version is fantastic!
oh lord, this is awesome. I just got 'vauxhall' last week and this was the song that didn't jump out at me until about the fourth time through; when it did, I was totally gobsmacked. "Bunnie I loved you / I was tired again / I tried again." Then he follows it up with "spring-heeled jim": "he'll do; he'll never be done to." Moz questions traditional notions of masculinity with more courage, vision, and intelligence than ANYONE. And what an incredible version here, though he looks so sad...
This song and the rest of Vauxhall and I was there for me when I was 16. A girl I was in love with said she couldnt see me anymore, and broke up with me. It helped me get over it.
NO PUEDO PARAR DE ESCUCHARLO Y CUANDO REPITE SO SO SO SOUU ME MATA !!!!! SUPERGENIO RECARGADO DE TALENTO!!! SUBLIMEEE MOZZZ SO SO SO SO OH SO SOU AHHH!!!
This song is only for real Morrisey fans. Only for real fans......... None who is a morrisey fan can say that he ignores this song !!!!!!!!!!!! This is a masterpiece . I am sure I am one of the most important the smiths fan you will find in this world.......... I have loved them since I was 12 !!!!!!! And he influenced my life !!!!!!!!
Love this song and video. The only other thing better than this was Morrissey trying to sing Everyday is like Sunday (hmmmm crowd invasion in Dallas lol)
I absolutely agree. Vauxhall and I is arguably his best album, but I also like bona drag and kill uncle. Kill uncle is an awesome album. And the Last one before the ringleader is also very good.
There's gonna be some trouble A whole house will need re-building And everyone I love in the house Will recline on an analyst's couch quite soon Your father cracks a joke And in the usual way Empties the room Tell all of my friends I don't have too many Just some rain-coated lovers' puny brothers Dallow, Spicer, Pinkie, Cubitt Rush to danger Wind up nowhere Patric Doonan, raised to wait I'm tired again, I've tried again, and Now my heart is full Now my heart is full And I just can't explain So I won't even try to Dallow, Spicer, Pinkie, Cubitt Every jammy Stressford poet Loafing oafs in all-night chemists Loafing oafs in all-night chemists Underact, express depression Ah, but Bunnie I loved you I was…
Nope, the "Dallow, Spicer, Pinkie, Cubitt" lyrics are in reference to 4 of the main characters in Graham Greene's "Brighton Rock", which is a proper good read that I decided to read as a result of this song
Nutter he may be. But when I bought Vauxhall and I, I had to listen to it one track at a time. One track then turn it off. Wait half an hour and listen to the next track. Well this was the first and the best. Like a retrospective. I loved it and I still love it - but I don't love him. Oh the contradictions!!!!
@ROBOTBOY7499, could we please just have one video without the mentioning of Justin Bieber? I think I speak for everyone when say it does my fucking head in. It's not needed on such a brilliant song like this.

Moz's vocals are quite close to perfection on this track. Staggering.
Best Morrisey ever ..
How can be possible such as magical master piece?
3:47 when the young guy takes and kisses morrissey's hand. Something really special about that.

My Moz ❤️❤️❤️
Where the kid kisses his hand?
It brought tears to my eyes...
I like this man because he used to have a rain forest sticking out of his back pocket,
And he likes cats...
it's from Vauxhall & I, dated 1994
There's gonna be some trouble
A whole house will need re-building
And everyone I love in the house
Will recline on an analyst's couch quite soon
Your father cracks a joke
And in the usual way
Empties the room
Tell all of my friends
I don't have too many
Just some rain-coated lovers' puny brothers
Dallow, Spicer, Pinkie, Cubitt
Rush to danger
Wind up nowhere
Patric Doonan, raised to wait
I'm tired again, I've tried again, and
Now my heart is full
Now my heart is full
And I just can't explain
So I won't even try to
Dallow, Spicer, Pinkie, Cubitt
Every jammy Stressford poet
Loafing oafs in all-night chemists

Underact, express depression

INTRODUCING MORRISSEY VAUXHALL AND SOUTHPAW LIVE TOUR 1995
Nope, the "Dallow, Spicer, Pinkie, Cubitt" lyrics are in reference to 4 of the main characters in Graham Greene's "Brighton Rock", which is a proper good read that I decided to read as a result of this song
I'm not a fan of his improvisations during shows, but I can't help but love the man.
But, Bunny, I loved you :(
it's probably "how soon is now"
you want to get married, your the coolest
Really how does he do it
Que genial disco Vauxhall and i!!! Version en vivo de puta madre !!! MOZ MOZ MOZ......!!!!
Ringleader of the Tormentors is a fantastic album
but it only comes slightly close to this great and classic album Vauxhall and I.
God I wish this was better quality.... oh well
please someone let me know what show is this ????
introducing morrissey
carlos palacios Blackpool, England 1995
Why so many Worrissey' songs finish with a repeated word or phrase?
@Coalkey23
For me, it's either this or The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get.
anyone got this video in a higher resolution?
@lliillaahayes
Blackpool opera house feb 1995

the girl at 2.55.....
the girl at 2.55........
I was obsessed with finding out who she was when I got this vhs back in the 90s haha
@jstow01 'among' is the only mistake you made
Gonna have to disagree with you on that one. Album version is close to perfection.
Sounds like you just got owned by Morrissey.
@ROBOTBOY7499, could we please just have one video without the mentioning of Justin Bieber? I think I speak for everyone when say it does my fucking head in. It's not needed on such a brilliant song like this.
