I enjoyed this. I've been in the industry for 19 years and it was NOT easy to get into it. I did long and to be honest, abusive apprenticeship. Thankfully an artist at that studio really took me under their wing. I have no idea how anyone could do a course for a week or a month and have any real understanding of how to tattoo properly. The idea of someone tattooing to start without a mentor watching over them is pure insanity to me. Here in the US, the fast track into it is doing a PMU course and then doing brows for a year or two. Then some start doing "micro" tattoos and go from there. It's scary. The industry needs some type of gatekeeping.

There is a shop that had their apprentice for 3 months and promoted him to a full time position and he has no idea about anything, the work is awful, scratchy weak lines mixed with blow outs, lines too close together, wrong machine speed, everything is unprofessional and dangerous, It's insanity.

I've actually done jail time here back before it was legal to tattoo. 2 of us got arrested here in our state in '95 and '96. The culmination of those cases was the legalization of tattooing in Indiana. I would like to see history respected. Some of us had to risk and even lost freedom to make it possible here. I don't mind new artist but I feel like most just see the fast money. Nobody wants to apprentice because everyone feels entitled to it and it's easier to just get TH-cam training. People are so fragile and offended now. They miss the fun, education and relationship building that comes with apprenticeships. It's the acceptance into the industry. Every single time I have been asked if I would apprentice someone nobody ever brings in drawings or art nor can they even tell me why they want a job in art let alone tattooing.

Apart from your years of experience, would you say you have any tattoo qualifications ?

The only thing I have that could be classed as a qualification as it’s regulated by ofqual is the infection and control course I did which is mandatory.
The point I’m very clearly making in this video is company’s are selling a product under false pretence by saying they offer a qualification for a price, when they do not exist in tattooing.

The “schools” are despicable, and they may be disrespectful to the art and history of the art of tattooing, but let’s not pretend that the art students turned tattooers who are selling apprenticeships for tens of thousands of dollars while actually teaching little if anything about the industry are just as much a stain on the art, history and legacy of tattooing.
Bad tattoos and bad tattooers have been around long before any of us, and they’ll be here when we’re gone. If you know your trade, your work will speak for itself. If you don’t, your work will speak for itself.
