I have been a gold miner for 30 years. We used to put the mercury in a pan like you did with the concentrates, then squeeze it through a cloth and came out with an amalgamate nugget of gold and mercury including all of the fines. Then burn it off , then just touch it and it would break up into all of the original gold.

Maybe that is why I am how I am now! Drain Bamage. So many things we played with back then that is not allowed today. What do you get when you mix powder charcoal, sulfur, and one other ingredient? 9:40 You had plenty of mercury to collect all the gold. What you failed to do was tumble it together. You have to constantly mix the gold, dirt, and mercury. That allows all the gold to be captured by the mercury. Tumbling is best, because you can set the tumbler and let it run for an hour. But I suppose mixing with a kitchen mixer would do. Even a magnetic stir pellet in a beaker. The important thing is constant agitation.

    Hi Pauly,
Of course, it‘s super cool to play with mercury but be aware, you created a million microscopic tiny beads, you'll never collect (check the scratches in your pan with a loupe). They will vaporize over the time but stay in your shop forever...
You'll also never get all of the mercury out of the black sand, now it's hazardous waste.
In order to avoid the vaporization, all things that were in contact with the mercury, should stored under water or at least in sealable plastic bags (e.g. the retort).
    Best regards from Germany!

It would be a lot safer to use your retort outside with a breeze to your back. Mercury in liquid form doesn't`t exhaust fumes until heated of course. Also the best retort is the one that looks kinda like a still. It`d be great if you could do a vid. retrieving the 30,50,100,200 as well, using the chamois method ,cause that`s really cool too. thanks

Second comment several months later, I went to a class and the teacher said that the retort should be totally cool before removing, you can just leave it or after 20 -30 minutes if not cool then drip water over the top. But to leave it to cool until you can remove it by hand, with only a plastic glove. Otherwise you can release the mercury vapor

FYI, I’ve never read in any primary or secondary historical sources of miners intentionally dumping mercury in rivers as a method to extract gold. Most mercury we find today (in gravels or on bedrock) was associated with past placer operations where it was placed in sluice boxes to capture fine gold. There was a loss factor and some was washed or agitated out inadvertently through the back of the sluices.

Try putting it all into a tumbler at low speed for a day. The Gold/Mercury amalgams should attach to each other and form a ball that you can just pick out of the black sand. The other trick is to do it like you did but work it in a pan full of water with your fingers and try to work the little pieces all together into a ball.

The old timers around here ran that amalgam from stamp mills over copper plates to collect it (small bits) from the water and slimes. Seems the mercury likes copper also. Then they would clean the plates with wooden scrapers and retort the amalgam. When there was damage or age, the wooden scrapers were burnt and the remains retorted with the rest and values recovered.

You need a pointy cone bottomed flask to get all the amalgam to collect in one place.
Also, since some of the gold may have been stuck to the magnetite, that was going to ruin your plans anyhow.
When dealing with microfine gold mingled with magnetite, you are better to either dissolve the iron with HCl or dissolve the gold with CN

As a hazmat guy that cleans up mercury spills, your shop, Legos, pan and everything you touched is now hazardous waste. Hmu if you want some guidance on limiting your repeated exposure. Fun vid Pauly ❤

The channel ask Jeff Williams shows like a mercury gold retort or something. You hear up one end and the mercury goes to the other end and distills in water so you don’t waste mercury or pollute.
It’s like ya third world countries just using mercury without gloves and breathing the stuff as they burn it ya that’s pretty bad but the mercury retort thing I saw seemed pretty safe.

So we should be dredging our rivers and creeks to remove mercury from our waterways? Ca. Doesn't think so. They would rather leave it in your water. Genious!

Excellent video Pauly, i also had success in seperating Mercury from gold.
When i retrieved the mercury from the pan after using the tube retort,
the mercury doesn.t seem to want to join back together in the vial which i found strange.

You could always just boil off the mercury outside with a white background and shine a flashlight shining on it. The vapor may be invisible but it still casts a shadow!

Pauly, I think it was necessary to grind the magnetite into a fine powder first. Mix with mercury in a wet state by pouring water into a jar. Then rinse through nylon tights using a spray bottle. The balls of mercury with amalgam should remain on the nylon, and the empty magnetite powder will pass through.

Run your black sand w/ gold mixed (with mercury in it) through a pulverizer then use a 'blue bowl' to separate the sand, THEN run it through a retort. the process works, just be careful.

I remember as a youngster dropping a thermometer on the kitchen floor. Tiny balls of Mercury were all over the floor. Back then, no big deal. Just sweep it all together with your hands until it's one big ball and dispose of it. 😆 59 yrs old and no learning disabilities or brain or organ damage... To my knowledge. Lol. I grew up in what today's generation would say was a dangerous era. Hell, we'd toss giant heavy steel darts towards each other and that's a store bought game. 😂

I collected a fruit jars worth of mercury from blood pressure cuffs when they became as toxic Hazzard and were replaced. And yes, I put it through every test I could think of also for recovery including electro magnet recovery. It's unlike any other metal that's for sure. Like in your experiments I may have picked up minute particles but not what you could call a success and chalked it up to probably contamination from metal particles. The retort I made can hold the entire 700 mil.jar not that I'll ever need that much but best to err on the side of candy "science term". The only thing I did different is the recovery tank. I have a 10 lb aluminum bar that I machined out to hold the retort inside with 1 1/2" of space around it. I freeze it over night to cool water inside again I err on the side of I don't want to do the poisoned cockroach dance for a bit of candy sicamatific approach. But what amazes me is that through the dozens of times I ran it to work out the details of getting the recovery down. I haven't lost any mercury by weight. So I guess it's "scientifically" safe. Although I do place my retort in a case I seal up with an old bath fan and venting to prevent the basically mustard gas if it should escape from the retort from being my dance partner. I don't know who came up with the idea even though I've looked for the information. But as smart as we think we are those old school chemists were pretty amazing! What really does shock me is that the knowledge of the effects of the gas and skin contact were well known, the minors that would handle and inhale the fumes must have been on low end of the Darwin scale. Next time out, try adding ice to the cooling tank I think you'll like the results. Great video Pauly!👍😷

you should put a drop of mercury on top of an aluminium can.. or sit a full soda can in the mercury and see what it will do to the aluminium. also if that mercury is from rivers you may want to flash that down also. it may have dissolved cold in it still
