'How not to be Prime Minister': Liz Truss biographer lifts lid on shortest ever premiership

- James O'Brien speaks to Sir Anthony Seldon, political commentator and contemporary historian - who is the author of the new book 'Truss at 10 - How not to be Prime Minister'.
Liz Truss served a record 49 days as Prime Minister, a time in the job eclipsed by Sir Keir Starmer this week. Sir Anthony says 'she went about growth the wrong way and still thinks she is right and we are all responsible' and that 'she saw enemies everywhere'.
Sir Anthony concludes saying he has sympathy for her because she believed in the right thing, which was growth and areas left behind, 'but wanting to make life better for people is not good enough when the delivery is catastrophic.'

I was a mental health nurse for 22 years, and worked with clients who had less serious cases of delusions of grandeur than Truss has. She possesses virtually zero self awareness.
It was almost Shakespearean how she descended into a political madness. She remains disturbed

One tiny bit of consolation. It is not a pension. Truss has access to an expense account, the Public Duty Costs Allowance, from which she can claim costs incurred because she is an ex-prime minister, but at least it is not paying for her time.
@@clarecrawford9677 Yes, thank you for clarifying this misunderstanding. She can only claim from the time when she left the Office as PM to when she lost her seat. The Cabinet office has not issued a set of accounts as to who claimed the allowance, and this included Bojo as well.
Yet millions wiped off people’s pension funds too.

How did she get a pension for life after 49 days, that needs to be answered.
It’s not a pension. Truss has access to an expense account, the Public Duty Costs Allowance, from which she can claim costs incurred in being an ex-prime minister. It does not pay for her time. Daft American right-wingers do that.
She can only claim her pension once she reaches pensionable age. What she was entitled to claim was an allowance, not a pension, that is an ongoing myth. It is the Public Duty Service Allowance and is up to £115k, for additional secretarial support and security. It is means tested and she can only claim it from when she was a ex PM to when she lost her seat as an MP. Details are on the cabinet office website.
And she will turn up at the Cenotaph every year wearing something silly on her head next to an even more shambolic Bunter
@@michaelhearn3052 that's ok then,115,000 a year wasted on that waster, not a pension so everything is fine,
He won’t turn up. No way.
Currently reading her book 'Ten years to Save The West' .. .....in a strange perverted way , I'm enjoying it. Truss's problem ,a complete lack of awareness that trickle down economics is fundamentally flawed and a failure to accept that the people in government that she depended on were educated people and as such highly likely to have progressive views . As the ex Tory MP Rory Stewart observed , if he was out canvassing and saw lots of books in the home ... he knew they weren't going to vote Tory.
I was given Farage's "The Purple Revolution" as a joke present. However, I did read it cover-to-cover, finding it a very telling insight into his bombastic mindset, his at times delusional thinking, his overweening ego, his desperate neediness for attention and relevance, all of which he is obviously completely blind to.
And by buying these comic books you have helped to further inflate the egos of both of those lunatics.

It's still ridiculous that Johnson's resigning didn't trigger an automatic election and instead they got to appoint Truss and then Sunak.
Not only ridiculous but anti-democratic. Proportional representation is needed.
Not really we vote for a party not a person. The "leader " is just branding that makes it easier to get votes.
I think you will find that besides the MPs in the Tory government who voted so did members of the Tory party as well.
@@DRIFT_CORE Strange though isn't it, that if an MP defects to another party midway through their term of office, we throw away the party and keep the person/personality. The direct opposite of what our parliamentary 'democracy' espouses.
TBF, the parliamentary system operates on the assumption that hundreds of people, all of whom have been endorsed by thousands -- collectively millions -- of people, would be able to draw on enough competence to steady the ship without the disruption of a national election mid-term.

The trickle down effect, the only thing we get trickled down isn't money, its white and pearly.
Truss & Kwarteng were both Tufton Street acolytes, steeped in the think-tanks' economic dogma, particularly low taxation for the best-off, and of course the richest.
The mini-budget was based on the notion of tax cuts for the highest earners and worse still these were not funded, but would be paid for by borrowing. This made no economic sense. The markets regarded it as insanity, so saw Britain as a unstable, risky investment so swiftly started to dump its bonds.
Truss has complained that leftie economists were sabotaging her, but that's just not the case. The markets are pragmatic and it was because Truss and Kwarteng were flouting fundamental economic theory and sense that they reacted as they did.
This is what happens when Tufton Street dogma gets exposed to the real world, particularly market economics. What's extraordinary is that Truss is still convinced that she was right and reality was wrong.
Truss is writing a new autobiography called "Infamy Infamy... They've all got it in for me"
