    For me personally the worst was Rise of Skywalker. It was a big letdown and had many missed opportunities for being an "epic conclusion" to a massive franchise. The fan edit "Ascendant" fixed some of the issues, but yeah it bummed me out about as much as the Game of Thrones finale did. Two of the worst conclusions to a couple of my favorite franchises...

      Tl;Dr all of the sequels are really bad. TFA is probably the worst for creating plots based on nostalgia that were never going anywhere or could be answered, RoS tried but failed, but I think TLJ was the worst, rather than be underwhelming, it was just offensive and I left the theatre a bit upset, compared to slightly optimistic. Two things about the Last Jedi. Did you noticed that in the throne room fight scene one of the Pretorians knife disappears (he could easily stab Rey so they digitally removed it).
    A thing about Porgs. Yes they do basically nothing but the origin of their presence is interesting. They filmed the island scenes on an Irish island Skellig Michael - a puffins reserve. Instead of removing the birds they made puffins into porgs.

    The Last Jedi by a mile for me. It is the most pointless of the franchise. Every plot thread goes nowhere there are too many character assassinations and least I forget...... General Holdo. The worst character in the history of star wars even more worse than Jar Jar.

It has interviews with directors like Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry), Darron Aronofsky (Requiem For a Dream), John Waters (Pink Flamingos), Matt Stone (South Park), and Mary Harron (American Psycho). You can also look up some old interviews with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell talk about how they didn't go to the MPAA for Evil Dead 2 and how that impacted them getting a R-rating on Army of Darkness. Besides that one documentary there are many instances where Kevin Smith had to fight them and cut scenes in his films.

    Just gonna post this under the actual video too since it still applies.
    The prequels are borderline avant garde art films compared to the soulless by the numbers nonsense that is the sequels. Even the most risky film in the sequel trilogy is still just tracing over other people’s images and ideas and twisting them a little. Say what you want about Lucas’s approach with the prequels but they’re at least interesting to talk about. The visuals lean into digital artifice which gives them their own aesthetic and the performance styles intentionally call back to old Hollywood melodrama. Naturally these two things are alienating choices but they’re so much more interesting than anything Disney came up with.
    It’s not rewriting history to act like there’s any merit to the prequels, there’s been plenty of intellectual film critics who’ve written pretty compelling positive work on them. I doubt anyone will be doing that with the sequel trilogy in a decade. I’m sure you guys will say “well at least the Disney films are competent, Force Awakens ain’t that bad” even though there’s not an ounce of artistic integrity to it. I love the RedLetterMedia guys but I think their prequel reviews for as funny as they are have totally messed up TH-cam film criticism. So many people break down films in this very narrow minded way now. If you’re interested in an actual positive write up about the prequels than look up Mike Thorn’s work.

    • @llhaken
      @llhaken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well said, the sequel trilogies were soulless & written by people with an agenda as opposed to an affinity for the lore. The comics & the video games actually had better well written stories regarding the remnants of the empire & the new Jedi academy that should've been what was just used to make the movies instead of Disney ignoring them & literally rewriting history for no apparent reason other than greed.

    • @bigduke5902
      @bigduke5902 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You and I think alike. In my opinion, the prequels have more value for being bizarre failures bases on one guy's weird vision. The Phantom Menace just by itself is one of the most important films ever made and for three reasons:
      1) It pioneered many CGI film techniques
      2) It popularized and legitimized (financially) both the very idea of prequels in film and the revival/reboot of past successful genre films, an influence that is STILL being felt today (a fucking WILLY WONKA prequel is coming this year!)
      3) It represents the greatest divide between audience expectation and disappointment in the history of arts and entertainment which will never, ever be topped

    Top Three: Rogue One, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back
    Bottom Three: Attack of the Clones, Solo, The Rise of Skywalker
    Everything else is somewhere in the middle.
    To be clear I don’t hate any SW films or shows. It’s my comfort food, even when it’s not very good, I can still get something positive out of it.

    13:25 OG Boba Fett sounded badass, this change I actually felt completely unnecessary and disappointing, but this was not in 1997, and everyone did like the 1997 movies, in fact, it wasn't until Plinkett that I heard anyone bash SW movies at all, but I too was born 1990.
    Even as a kid there were a few things I found jarring; the Jabba from ANH was CGI, and like the one in TPM, they looked incredibly fake compared to RotJ Jabba, which was also like 10x the size, just how much did Jabba eat in a few years? Both songs in Jabba's Palace are really bad, but I think the new one is probably worse...and Greedo shot first, I mean, they can edit that, but they can't just have the Lazer miss instead of Han contort? It's negligible to me; Even Hayden at the end of RotJ was fine. Just 2 things bother me - Fett later voice change, and Jabba looking weird.

    I guess the Ewok films. I recall one being slightly ok & the other being trash.
    But purely for plot alone it's episode 8. It has great acting & cool moments when taken individually. But that movie has more plot holes than most movies I can think of let alone Star Wars. It was so bad that episode 9 (which isn't great either) had to take time away from it's script to try to make sense of unanswered plot holes in 8.
    If anyone thinks a different one is worse than 8 I'd honestly love to hear why. No hyperbole, honest geek discussion.

    • @shsrpr
      @shsrpr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think 8 was the worst SW movie when it came out. But because 9 had to spend so much time unraveling the mess of 8, 9 turned out much worse than 8, and makes 8 seem coherent by comparison. And that's not even mentioning all the silliness in 9 that has nothing to do with retconning 8. So I think 9 takes the cake imho. But both are bad movies, not just bad SW movies. The Ewok films as bad as they are, they were made for TV movies that were aimed squarely at little kids, so I can cut those filmmakers a lot more slack than I do RJ or JJ.

    So to me the “we don’t serve their kind here” and all the droid hate I never saw it as the droids being slaves. I’m fact, I interpreted as ppl being scarred from the clone wars, how the droid army killed and enslaved ppl during that time. So after the rise of the empire, droids are viewed and treated as such because of what the droid army did. I think Mandalorian also touched on why he himself doesn’t like droids either.

I was 9 when The Phantom Menace came out. I enjoyed The Force Awakens in theaters, but it took me like a year and a half to get around to watching The Last Jedi after it came out. To this day, I still haven't watched The Rise of Skywalker. My post-RotJ Star Wars universe is all in books of varying and questionable quality where Luke eventually married the woman trained to assassinate him, and Han and Leia named their third child Anakin.

    "The Last Jedi" turned me off from the Disney trilogy entirely. I'm not even a super fan. I think Rian Johnson tried so hard to subvert expectations that he made a film that doesn't tonally fit into the film DNA of Star Wars. The original films are light hearted, swashbuckling melodrama. All the attempts throughout the years at trying to draw the stakes closer to the real world -whether it be the political intrigue of the prequels or visiting war profiteers and... everything else from the Disney films doesn't work well filmically for Star Wars. A lot of these attempts would have worked a lot better in comics or novels alongside the films (which obviously existed for decades before Disney cut them out). I rarely leave a film and think. "I don't think they know where they're going or what they have," but TLJ did that for me. I think a Disney + Rian Johnson Star Wars mini series would have been a safer investment and let him off the hook creatively instead of giving him the keys to the main story.

    'The Last Jedi' is the only movie ever made where I honestly believe a public apology is needed. I believe in a free Democratic Republic, but these people should be punished for 'The Last Jedi'. That was the last time I went to the theatre and I stopped watching Stars Wars and Marvel because of it. It's DISGUSTING and I'll never get over that atrocity. I'd like to but I won't. Star Wars is dead and while were on the subject, I love how Disney doesn't have the balls to make a Boba Fett show until they test the water with 'The Mandalorian'... It's dead, it's all dead. P.S. I never saw 'The Rise of Skywalker'. Because it was already dead and I don't acknowledge 8 or 9. There were good things about 7, I liked a lot of it (not all).

    I think the special editions really make sense the most - not in like narrative sense, but in a meta sense - if you've read or listened to all the interviews with Lucas where he talks about why he did them. He quoted someone else in it saying "works of art are not completed, merely abandoned" and then saying he didn't want to do that, but I think on some level he fundamentally misunderstood the quote, or the person he was quoting misunderstood human nature, that sometimes you just need to tell your inner perfectionist to shut the hell up and look at what you've done and go "you know what, this is good enough".
    But instead, he just decided to throw himself into this stupid doom spiral 20 years after the fact and because the CGI dates way faster than the practicals did, he has to keep revisiting them once every while for the rest of his life.
    There's also something to be said for the fact that movies are collaborative efforts, and it were those collaborative efforts that earned the film an Oscar for best visual effects...so he had to go and fuck with those, too.

The fact that he dies at the end just sort of makes him a convienent plot point in the movie. I think if he survived The Last Jedi and played a bigger role in Episode 9, then his Sequel Trilogy character arc is worth it. Instead, we see him for 30 seconds in Episode 7, he’s a hermit in Episode 8, and we see him for 5 minutes in Episode 9. The reason why they created Qui-Gon was because Lucas messed up on age continuity with the OT Obi-Wan and Anakin, and the PT Obi-Wan and Anakin due to him continually changing his mind on plot, in this case deciding to make Anakin a little kid in Phantom Menace.
    Originally, Owen was supposed to have been Obi-Wan's brother. That's the explanation in the original OT why Luke was seen as being safe with the Lars family.
