  • Frank shows you how to shim the inside of a coupler gearbox. Using some basic hobby tools and supplies you can easily ensure ideal coupler alignment on your cars and locomotives.

Thanks for this suggestion on stabilizing the coupler. Not only is it doing that, but you can "lower" the coupling mechanism for a better fit to the coupler gauge, allowing better connections to other cars on your layout.

Nice to see the factory recommending the same technique our club has evolved. Controlling the vertical play has made a significant improvement in our coupler reliability.

Frank has quite a few good tips and we'll be making more videos as soon as we can!

Kadee should make shims as well in their product line.

I solved my problem today. I think I will go with shims. Can you tell the the thickness I should get for my coupler 242 box?

I know that making instructional videos is very time consuming but if you would please consider to zoom in very close to the coupler boxes and any other small components you are working on, it would make it easier for people to see what you doing. It would be also very useful to show a pencil or pen line drawing of what you are doing.

Thanks for the suggestion! We'll hopefully be upgrading our video equipment in the future!

To be clear, what size thickness polystyrene sheet should I buy?

I'm a newbie. Why not recommend the Kadee product (Kadee 211 HO Scale Styrene Gearbox Shims .010in & .015in )? I have a problem with the uncoupling of a Kato HO P-42 Loco which is lower than my Bachmann Amtrak Dome car coupler. Both are #158. This is my only uncouplng issue. Wiil a slim help? And if so what inch. Can I use a #158 and a #142 coupler to reach the proper coupler height? In your next video please use a before and after view of a drooping or sagging coupler so people like me can know they have a problem. A response would be appreciated .

Why is it that at 2:00 Frank says to always have the thin side or cover of a #242 coupler box facing toward the car - which is the way it is shown on a No. 5 coupler envelope with a #5 box, but opposite what is depicted on #14X series coupler envelopes and the #242 coupler box envelope?

Hey PrecisionFlyerRepairs. The gearbox lid should always go against the car to strengthen the gearbox assembly. This is done so the lid doesn’t flex open if the coupler is pushed downward.
The lip of the lid rests against the end of the car to keep the gearbox square and prevent twisting if the coupler swing ever maxes out.
The drawings on the #148 & #242 envelopes are there to depict the package contents and are not an assembly diagram.
Please always read and follow the included coupler assembly instructions for proper product use.

Uhhhh... Silly me... Why doesn't Kadee make them that way so that don't droop?
