see now if this had been the movie tie-in for the rebooted sabrina series, the whole show would have been better. Catherine changes her name from Joan to Sabrina> joins a coven with two other older women, under the guise of being a girl living with her two aunts. A priest comes to break up the coven and he gets tortured and cursed, eventually retreating and going into hiding after he is injured. Over the course of the day, his wound worsens, and he dies but his corpse is shrunken and turned into that of a cat. The cat then mummified and kept by the coven. the trapped soul within used to enhance spells they cast.

Kat's parents actually die on their way to the school. Her dream was a premonition. That's why her parents didn't arrive when they were supposed to and why the police show up with the priest. They were going to tell her but by that time she was possessed and had gone completely over the deep end and killed the sisters and Rose.
Rose, as it turns out, was not actually pregnant. If you watch the scene right before she is killed, she is in the bathroom and looks down in relief when she wipes herself indicating that she got her period. You don't see any blood but it is obvious by the look on her face.
Valora Abbett yeh I was wondering about kats parents , because the nurses say that the principal is coming and it looks like something awful happened when they talked about it to rose , love how it hinted at the stuff throughout the movie

Rose wasn't pregnant though. In the bathroom scene before she was murdered, she cries with relief because she had gotten her period. Otherwise great explanation of the movie as usual!
That's what I was thinking. I just watched the movie and she seemed relieved by what I figured was her getting her period. Really cool movie overall. Sort of reminded me of The Innkeepers movie. Nice slow burn horror.

Katherine's parents definitely weren't already dead, they died on the way to pick her up. The car crash scene was her dreaming/having a premonition that they were dead. If they were already dead the nuns and headmaster wouldn't be trying to reassure her that they're fine. Plus there's no reason for the headmaster and police to show up at the end other than to tell her about the crash. Also, Rose wasn't pregnant she just thought she was. She mentions to her friend that she's only four days late and then she gets her period before Katherine kills her. That's why she's so relieved and laughing in the bathroom.

They ofc just changed the actress for mystery and suspense, and I’m sure coz they like the actresses.

Thought it was pretty cool to see Emma roberts in something outside of Nickelodeon or for young audiences. Didn’t know she was in this when I watched in on Netflix a few years ago and was surprised.

I like that the demon doesn't stay in an abandoned old building for 9 fucking years. A lot of movies like to pull that kind of shit. It doesn't make any sense, why would you stay in a place you know MAYBE one person might return?
Actually it would make sense, because homeless people use those buildings as shelter plus they can be emotionally vulnerable
I loved how it was such a slow burn kinda movie and the darkness of the scenes, the colors they used, was beautifully shot and well done. You feel the complete emptiness and loneliness that Emma Roberts feels when she's crying at the end.

OK, hold on... I just finished watching this film and I'm pretty confident that Rose wasn't pregnant. A moment before she died it seems she might've had her period, which is why she seemed so happy back in the bathroom. That's the only explanation for her saying "oh my god" and smiling. That or she was constipated and finally managed to take a dump.

I watched the movie and I didn't think she was ever possessed. The devil just seemed like he was using her and the exorcism wasnt about making the devil leave her body it was just making the devil get away from her

Rose's dad definitely had something weird going on because apparently Joan wasn't the first young girl he picked up or befriended. Maybe it was just grief/sorrow over Rose's death but I got a creepy perv vibe off him a few times.
It has a creepy vibe but I don't think it's intentional on the part of Kat's dad. He is so sincere and even asks his wife about picking up Joan, even though Kat's mom is never that open about the loss as he is. In the room, he never seems to even want to sit on the bed. He moves the coat from the chair and sit on the chair, keeping a distance. I think that's when grief consumes a person's common sense without their knowing it.
They were people who suffered a huge loss and simply lost their heads.
The SOUNDTRACK is a whole movie in itself! It really is a masterpiece and masterclass in demonstrating how much we can be manipulated by sound!!

The thing that really really bugged me about this movie, why didn't rose's parents recognize their daughter's murderer?
I had the same thought, the dad says he stopped bc "joan" looked just like his daughter, either a major plot hole or maybe he recognized kat and thought it was a coincidence due to the anniversary of roses death. Since he was a believer in God he decided to help her.
I think the devil distorted her face to the parents. He made her look more like rose (to bill) and remember when bills wife said “I can’t even see you” I think she couldn’t really tell who joan looked like. That’s just my take.
It had been nine years between events.

@@jacyannc7381 nah, couldn't have been the devil. He was already long gone. Maybe the whole "I can't even see you" thing was from a deep memory she had of Kat that she couldn't quite put her finger on. Maybe she chose to block out those events, so seeing her again was such a shock that she couldn't even understand what she was seeing. Maybe she did recognize her and had to convince herself it couldn't be Kat, which would make sense as to why she says she can't see her, because all she sees is Kat. Little does she know it really is Kat.
What I like about the time structure of the film is how it:
a) Makes the grief of the parents even more affecting
b) Gives you a way into the mindset of the lead character without holding your hand through the narrative
c) Creates empathy for everyone involved.
This is one of those rare films that doesn't leave a big immediate impression, but kind of worms its way into your thoughts and nightmares in the days and weeks to follow. I definitely have to see this again.
gotta say, this movie had an AMAZING atmosphere all the the way through. it was so dark and twisted but never tried to over explain things. imo, a masterclass movie at creating tension and an eerie feeling

And miss her "performance"
The demon was more of a friend and a comfort to her than all the people that where around her. After losing her parents she must've felt hallow and alone. Instead of interpreting the demon talking to her from the vent and phone as terrifying, she viewed it as a comfort because he must've sounded like her dad. This demon filled the hallowed part of her soul with itself and made her feel like she had someone who cared with her. Than to have that feeling torn away from her again so that she must face the naked truth of her reality again was heartbreaking.

This is still such a surreal and deeply unsettling horror film to me. I was like, mesmerized when I first watched it because everything about it seemed so unorthodox to other horror storylines. It was vague, creepy, and ultimately a great film with two amazing actresses. (Love Kiernan and Emma)

@@sagarsaxena6318 Utter despair is a bit of a strong interpretation. More just the fact that the fun dress up and smile moment of a class picture is punctuated by the distressing realities currently going on in her life.

You are the GOAT of movie explanations. Had no intention of watching this one but I'm glad I watched your synopsis. When I hear "atmosphere" in the trailers I always assume the suspense is really drawn out to a usually anticlimactic ending; didn't seem too bad. Thanks for the review, as usual! Also, just a random suggestion, if you haven't seen The Signal (2014), I thought it was interesting - been a while though.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe!! Please explain!! I know she was "turned into" a witch, even if she wasn't, but why/what does the ambulance driver at the end say to Jane's body and why? Does he know the secret of Jane Doe?? Or is he talking to someone else?
I like to think of it as Jane Doe was tortured as an assumed witch and either was one or was turned into one as she was getting tortured. She then performs some sort of specific death ritual corresponding to how she was tortured. Then the only reason the son was killed is because he interrupted the ritual between the witch and the father. At least, that's what I've gathered from watching it and other theories.

In looking up this film, I found out that it was shoot about 15 minutes away from me in Kemptville, Ontario (about 20 minutes south-west of Ottawa).
Sooo there is school there ?
@@JessicabelliciMa1 They filmed at the old Kemptville college. it was an agricultural college (mostly for kids who were going to take over their parents' farms one day) but it shut down a few years ago and is currently being used for a french primary/secondary school while their actual school is being built.

Time saver? Movie ruiner. This is def the kind of movie that you don't want any spoilers at all and actually all the trailers do a great job at not giving anything away for that exact reason. All the people on here with this mentality (which is shockingly a lot of people) are film haters and I don't even know why they are here in the first place. This movie was amazing but now you will never know.

Hi, I had to watch the movie twice to see that Kat had later murdered a Joan Marsh and resumed her identity towards the end of the movie. The highlights of evil are well accented and not over done. The exorcism of the demon from kat, thus she being in a hospital, only to 9 years later kill a Joan Marsh and escape, to return to the furnace now cold, all alone with no one for her. The final cry on her behalf of being alone, then the quick drop in tears and crying to a unconcerned face knowing she is unloved and all alone.
Actually I think you missed viewed the part where Rose tells Kat about the sisters, she's just trying to scare her. The sisters she is talking about is the sisters who watch over the girls. If those sisters had been caught worshipping the devil at Bramford they would have gotten fired.
I personally think in the very last seconds of the movie when she stops crying and looks straight ahead, the demon has in fact come back and she sees it.

Here's the interview with the director Oz Perkins (son of Anthony Perkins). His brother Elvis Perkins wrote the music score. It's supposed to be a "suggestion of demonic possession". People say there was levitation, but that scene only shows half of the body, not the whole body being levitated. You know the movie was originally named February (because of the remembering of the deaths that took place at the school), but then it was changed to words of a song in the music score. At the end of the day, this woman was a psychopath. Whether it was due to the deaths of her parents or not, she was per psychotic. She deserved the death penalty. The director explains it all.

Thanks for the link. It's been a while since I've seen the movie but my thoughts were that she was schizophrenic and seeing/hearing things. If I recall, we only see the demon from her point of view. Will def watch again.

I watched twice , loved the style of it. This break down made a lot more sense. I also love when Kat tells the principal she's disappointed that he will miss her performance
Those horns. I feel this movie is very underrated because it’s freaky as heck. I find that sometimes subtleties and little bits and bobs make for a really scurry time, as not every horror movie needs to be drenched with jump scares and seeing the demons and stuff.
In the conjuring, there’s a part where Lorraine is in a room and a Christmas song (that I now can never listen to and not feel uneasy) started playing and there’s a shadow that walks the walls and finally lands in their big portrait of the demon, Valak. That was so well played.
The VVitch follows that same principle as it gives us just a few breadcrumbs but they absolutely were so uncomfortable and freaky.
I love movies that do show some wild and crazy exorcisms or possessions, however there’s also movies that take the less is more approach and it’s executed very well.
Rose is not pregnant. You can tell in the scene when she uses the bathroom and looks at her wipe and says something to the degree of "thank god" and smiles, as in she got her period. Please redo your review because you mention her pregnancy several times and she is not pregnant. Just a case of a LATE PERIOD. Otherwise solid review.

I don't say this very often but I'll tell you right now you did an amazing job on this this takes a lot of work to dissect a movie and explain what the ending really mad so great job amazing work and I subscribe you know some of them I won't watch because I don't want to know but some of them I am curious about so yeah and I've seen most of these movies anyway so I had a hard time figuring out some the ending so you didn't amazing job keep up the great work.

Interesting movie. Schizophrenics often present in college and often stop taking their meds because they feel lonely without the voices. I wonder if this had anything to do with the motivations for writing the screen play.
What pissed me off the most about this movie is that if someone killed my daughter and ended up in a ward for it I would never forget their face even if 100 years went by. But the parents don't recognize her at all yet they are still consumed with grief 9 years later so you'd think they'd easily recognize their daughter's killer. A better ending would be if the parents did recognize her and turned the tables and killed her and sacrificed her to get their daughter back. That's my opinion anyway.
Love the idea of the parents killing her. And you're right I would know when my daughter's killer is getting out. The victim hotline would have called them.

I’m usually not a fan of slow-burns, but this one kept me engaged the whole time. The ending was like a punch in the stomach, it was so good!
I love the subtlety of this movie. It doesn't hit you over the head with explicit imagery and horror tropes which, for me, made it super disturbing. It's an atmospheric horror for grown ups
