I used to have long wavy hair that I’d often straighten with a brush and dryer. I’ve had long hair my entire adult life. I shaved most of it off prior to treatment. ⭐️ My chemo was to prep me for a stem cell transplant. I’m about 4 months since chemo and my hair is still short and super soft and I’ve realized one positive from this experience is that I’ve discovered one thing: I look good with super short hair. ⭐️ Like, I am thinking of keeping my hair this short for a while. It’s so easy to care for. Or, at the least, I won’t be afraid to shave in the future if I get tired of long hair.

I had a bone marrow transplant to cure my sickle cell. I have always loved having extremely long hair and before the chemo I didn’t cut it for three years so I could donate it. The weekend before my first chemo I cut it into a pixie cut and loved the short hair. My hair was wavy long and straight short. Then I shaved my hair when it started to get weak. Post treatment I made sure to shave my head with a razor to stimulate the follicles a bit and get it all growing evenly. Then I let it do its thing. I have loved every step of my hair growth. I also always loved curly hair so I was excited when my hair came out in tight curls. It looks shorter than it is because of the tight curling but I am enjoying it. Especially that it’s coming in so healthy. I do have a bunch of white hairs now but I love those too. I’ve heard that it can take years for it to grow out the way it used to so I’m sure I’ll have them long for some time before they get straighter. I’m the only one in my family with super curly hair and now I have to learn how to style it and care for them. But it’s exciting. Love your hairless head, your short hair, your chemo curls, etc. it’s proof you succeeded in completing the difficult treatments.

Wow that is very cool doc, my curls are still pretty predominant, its not really curly more like spirals. Thanks for the simple explanation. Is it rare for a male to get curly hair?

Defo not just women. Of course I understand that this is a channel for women with with breast cancer. Hence why it was worded that way. But as a black male who found out I had a brain tumour earlier this year. I’ve got the all clear two months that got but whilst my hair started to grow back in March till now my hair has gone from curly Afro hair to straight hair. I must say I actually like it a little.. 😅

I’m 16 months post chemo (docetaxel/carbo) and it seems like hair is taking forever to grow. It’s growing fairly good in the back (but slow and thin on top) I look like I’m growing a mullet.

I hate my bozo the clown hair. How long does it typically take to get ones natural growth pattern back? My last chemo was in May of 23 and I still have tight tight curls. Still taking mild cancer meds in pill form. The hair is so curly that it doesn’t even show growth. I don’t have money for products or styling. Unless my hair is freshly washed I don’t even want to leave the house, the frizz is that bad. I heard washing curly hair too often makes the frizz worse. Please be true that I will eventually get my hair back. Sorry for the vent.

Sorry you don't have the money, it makes such a difference. I think it was about £100 for the straightening. Maybe you could do a 'Go fund me' on social media or something? I imagine that there are plenty of ex cancer people that can sympathise and may contribute as well as others. I will if you start one. Good luck x

Have you tried to use aloe vera plant? It’s a healing plant. You can also try to spritz your hair with aloe vera juice. Just put it in a spray bottle and spray your scalp and hair. Leave it in or wash it out

Hey Doc, is it safe to get hair colour and smoothening done after chemo sessions are over? I am just the lucky one who didn’t loose hair after my NHL 6 cycles of chemotherapy. So can I get it done ?

I've had my hair lifted (bleached they used to call it), twice and it's still strong, Also had it blow dried and straightened with hair straighteners a few times. Going to see about hair extensions tomorrow and more permanent straightening.

The type of product you use to style can help the hair not look too frizzy or poofy. You can also go to a salon and ask that they cut some volume off so it doesn’t get too large. But if you have the patience stick it out. Use headbands and clips to control some shape. Sometimes I feel its to “helmety” but tgen I see how my family and husband love the way I look and it makes me more confident.
