  • Setting the static ignition timing on a Royal Enfield Bullet 500.
I have left this "warts and all" because everything doesn't go smoothly in real life too and this attempt left me with a larger amount of fiddling and repitition than usual.I had set the points cam position in my previous video so it was roughly at 0.8mm before top dead centre, which is correct for a standard 350 and 500 bullet.
What I forgot to allow for is my bike has an aftermarket long-stroke crank and as such, the cam was rotated too far retarded meaning I had to re-adjust to get it within the adjustment allowed by the slots in the contact breaker backing plate.

Thanks for that very concise tutorial. One thing that puzzles me? How does the simple dished washer turn and lock the points cam and a/r weights? It is totally mystifying to me? Thanks, I will attack my Bullet 65 with renewed vigour!!

You have to rotate the points cam with your fingers. Then tighten the bolt. When you do this, the edge of the dished washer bears against the cam and locks it in position. Normally the shaft the cam rotates on sits slightly proud of the cam so when you tighten the bolt with a plain washer, it bears against the shaft and leaves the cam free to rotate. The end of the shaft essentially sits inside the dished portion of the washer.
