@@richardmahoney9415 My comment is in response to the earlier carmudgeon episodes when they had a 20 minute timer to keep the episodes shorter and to keep them on-topic. The general response was "throw the timer out and go longer". I am happy they did so.

35:20 my favorite "Easter egg" badge is the Honda Accord v6's where the "v6" badge lettering was normally black for the automatic cars but were red if the car had a manual.

oh and speaking of letters, i don’t think i heard you guys mention Nissan’s AWD system on the Skyline GTRs. It started out as ATTESA, but the addition of a variable front/rear torque split feature made the name change to ATTESA E-TS, which then evolved to ATTESA E-TS Pro. Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All-Terrain w/ Electronic Torque Split. gotta love the japanese

@Sideways G 194hp out of a 2.3 S/C is also complete garbage, and that's given that it's the most powerful version of the 2.3.

    • @alexmartinez280
      @alexmartinez280 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@kirbyswarp Pretty sure the SC was to improve torque bc those cars are driven slow from stop and go cruising around town. Would help to know what type of compressor was used; positive displacement vs centrifugal. I def hear what your saying though, it’s Lmost like what’s the point to add the extra hardware for such a messily addition of power. The Lancia Beta VX was another that had such tiny, on paper, gain over the NA variants. They used Volumex compressors which in itself is a very rare brand to use for anyone let alone a manufacturer. Volumex was also used for the 037 cars so there was a legit reason. Maybe for homologation?

35:00 VW did something like this long ago with the TDI badge: all letters silver: lowest hp, red "I" low medium hp, red DI medium high hp, all 3 letters red highest hp variant. (i think it was 90, 110, 140, 180 hp) The need for 4wd or awd badges: it might not be the reason, but there are parts in the alps where it is possible that an awd/4wd car is excempt from having to put snow chains on certain roads under certain conditions, while 2wd cars have to or won't be allowed to drive on. And if police checks, the badge makes it easier for them.
Also, i'm 40 years old and i still wait for Mr. Camisa to sing something i know/recognize too.

Hi Jason, @unusualtomjones here, i.e. the internet, helping you understand what chassis to call an 1800TI/SA (Touring International Sonderausführung). Those pre 2002 four doors are generally referred to as Neue Klasse sedans, though the 1500-1800 chassis was referred to as a Type 118 internally by BMW. While they had a long last name, BMW didn’t badge them any differently than the already existing 1800TI. This geek is just happy that you mentioned the super unknown 1800 TI/SA homologation special at all. They’re near and dear to my heart as my dad has owned one since ‘89 that was raced in NorCal from ‘66-69. On the note of long sporting sedan names, the Alfa Romeo Giulia TI Super was a very similar car to the 1800TI/SA in execution and long name. I'm sure Bill Arnold could tell you just as much too. ;)

About stability control badges: as I'm sure you know, when Mercedes launched the original A Class in the 90s they had roll over issues. one of the countermeasures they took to solve the problem was to install stability control on all A Classes. Those are recognizable by the ESP badge at the back.
Also: Fahrzeug (driving thing) is another example of weird german words.

On the topic of multiple carbs and badging. Tri-power was GM, but mostly used on Pontiacs, and Six-Pack was the Chrysler nomenclature. Ford had the three deuces also but the nomenclature was not an official “company” moniker, and although an option on some engine combos such as the FE 406, it was very rare. And for the record Jason, the three carbs were usually the same casting, with the center carb having the choke plate and the outer ones having none, and the outer cabs were actuated either by vacuum or progressive linkage.

BTW, I own a 2006 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition with both RSC (Roll Stability Control) and a V8 badge (has the 292hp 4.6l 3v from the Mustang GT). The latter differentiates between the standard 4.0l V6 and the modular v8. Great show. Maybe a show about auto manufacturers rebadging other manufacturers' models? Like Saab/Subaru 9-2x/Impreza, Saab/Chevy Cavalier {Opal Vectra}, Saab/Chevy 9-7x/Trailblazer, Mazda Tribute/Ford Escape, and many more. Probably some really good ones to make fun of, lol. Might be entertaining. Love you guys!

Lancia had the awesome 3C badge on the Flamina cars for 3 double barrel carbs on their V6 engines.
Also the French DS drop head was called the Decapatable. Decapitate the car or drop it’s head… much more aggressive than the American convertible. That DS Decap is still one of the best looking drop tops of all time. Especially the Series 1 cars before the futuristic headlights the later cars came with.

They weren’t faster than Merlin powered aircraft but the Soviets had a ton of success with the p39 and the p38 was very successful in the Pacific while the p40 was a workhorse all over.

Surprised this is the 1st time I have heard any reference to Saab and barely briefly when talking about turbos and badges. I know they're quirky and ho-hum to the performance car crowd, but you cannot discount so many innovations in safety and engineering, let alone breaking the ceiling in making turbos commonplace in production automobiles. 🤷‍♂️ Would love to hear these guys commentary or at least one or two Saab stories. 😅

I used to own JDM subaru impreza wrx sti type ra v limited. Since it was JDM it had all of these designation letters on it.
Note that this was the rare V limited not just the more common RA limited.
From what I could work out about the designation letters the more it had was in a direct coloration to the more trim details that were removed from the car to make it light weight. I.E. you paid a higher price to have more of the standard trim items removed from the car.

One badge that I find funny is "catalisador" in some 80's brazilian Volkswagens. It means, literally, "catalytic converter"

    "ROTARY POWER"
In the early 2000s, CARB had a required percentage of ZEVs that manufacturers were supposed to sell. That was essentially impossible to meet (the tech really didn't exist yet), so they introduced a new standard of emissions that was low enough that selling a certain number of them counted as a single ZEV, thus "partial ZEV".

I college I had CT200H-F (1.8L-Hybrid), I didn't know at the time that the "F" at one point meant F-Sport with the 5.0. Then it became an appearance option, sad decline.
Oh, The OLDS 442 - 4 barrel carb, 4 speed, 2 doors or 2 wheeled positrac.

I’m not a Merc nut, but I think the “V8 Bi Turbo” badge is cool. Then again, the AMG GTR is pretty cool in general...

I admire how all reflections to motorsport look back to water-cooled Volkswagen, where many of us got our bump start into gearheadism

The first A-class got an ESP (stability control) badge when Mercedes introduced it because the car originally didn't pass the "moose test" by the Swedish magazine Teknikens Värld
that was a pretty big deal here in Europe

Rented a C class from Turo to drive a friend away from her wedding.
Had the window sticker conspicuously placed on the passenger seat. It had one option selected and only one. Illuminated Badges...

My first new vehicle was a 1983 Celica GT-S hatchback and the badge on the rear read GT, not GT-S. I remember at the time wondering why on earth they did that.

I think it's because people can't look it up. My good old E63 has the original 6.3 badges on the side and AMG on the brake calipers as well as on the exhausts. (but they are so dirty that people can't read it) And still only very few enthusiasts are aware what it is.
