Had some questions about this weakening the handle so let me explain. Remember first that the grain of the wood as well as type is important Hickory with good straight grain running the length of the handle is perfect. If you notice the cut out was placed on the bottom and the stress from shoveling would be stretching grain on the top. When the shovel is used for limbing or chopping it breathed a “I” beam effect and will not weaken with either left or right handed swings. It will be fine I have tested it some today with no problems
I've been following Dave for over decade.. I'm officially convinced, after this, that this man spends every waking millisecond thinking how to make, "this tool" a multipurpose tool, brother you are skynet....😮
I recommend deck screws because its outside all the time they won't rust. Awesome content still and info.. absolutely priceless thank you very much Sir.
Great idea, Dave. I think you could also just keep the shovel head attached to the handle (with sheath attached), eliminate the step of removing it, and still have an effective "T" handle for your auger bits.
Great video! I shall have to make one now! That little pocket is for the 1” expander bit that goes with this set… the expander tool next to the little pocket has a bit on it (2-3” expander I believe for boring holes). There’s also a counter sink bit that goes with the set but I don’t see it anywhere… anyhow, thanks for the video! 👍🏽
Just a piece of advice. There is a particular file used to sharpen auger bits. Still readily available. A great investment if you're using old bits. A standard file can make a bit useless, so make the investment.
Man I did a video on upgrading the shovel handle but never would have thought of making an insert socket for the auger bits ! Your shovel looks even more russian now 😅
That’s an awesome tool, made even more versatile. Can you talk about those bench dogs you used to hold down your workpiece? Never seen those used like that before
Awesome mod! It shows how versatile one good piece of kit can be with some basic tweaks and modifications. As Pale Rider said: "Nothing like a good piece of hickory!" I need to order one of those Cold Steel Spetsnaz shovels, been wanting one for years. When I get it, I'm doing this to it, and trying to take it further. I think having a small scythe blade that will fit might be another step up, since here in SW Florida we have a lot of areas that would be easier to move through with a portable sawgrass/canegrass slicer. Machetes work, but a curved bladed sickle/scythe blade would be much more efficient. May try and figure out a Sawzall blade attachment as well, since I currently have a separate handle for saw blades that is only one hand use sized; may work better with the extra length. (Enter that's what she said joke here) Great video!
Great video! As usual! Could you talk about those holdfasts that you used on the stump? Did you forge them? I'd love to see more of them! They are a great idea!
Just brilliant Dave! Awesome project. I go back and forth between the Cold Steel and the Titanium SRO Model. The SRO TT Shovel sure is nicer to carry! I have been using a trifold on my trapline this year. It does a great job for trap beds.
Alright fine. It’s official. I’m buying a new shovel! had a little Walmart one for years and have barely used it but definitely adding a better one to the kit
That's very convenient being able to use different size bits with the same handle. If I were you I would head to the patent office and try to get this system patented before someone else just on it
Dave, this is so cool! Have you showed those stump holdfasts in any other videos? I try to watch all your stuff and I don't remember seeing them before
Dave, that's pretty cool. When you were holding the shovel handle at the end I got to thinking you know you can wrap some Bank line around that and use it as a hand reel to fish with. 😂 Yes I'll always be a fisherman.
Only modification i would make is fitting 2 collars like on a chisel handle to support the grain on either side of where you cut it. Probably doesnt need it but would hate for it to break when i really need it. Also the swiss army knife comes to mind has lots of multi functions but doesn't do any of those functions very well.
That's a great idea. One of the other cool things you can do is drill two holes on each side in the foot rest and then take a chunk of bike inertube fold it and punch corresponding holes and jam knot it to the shovel. It deadens nearly all the ping and the only thing you have to watch out for is when your cooking with it.
Great lateral thinking yet again. My only concern with positioning the auger mount in the middle of the handle is that it could blister or tear up your hands when using the shovel for its original purpose (digging). I'd also rather not have to remove and reattach the shovel head each time I want to use the auger function. I wonder if it would be possible to leave the shovel head on permanently and position the auger mount in the neck of the shovel blade so the handle remains smooth? I appreciate this would reduce leverage, and necessitate one-handed as opposed to two-handed operation when turning the auger, but would leave the handle as it is for digging. Food for thought?
Great , repeat, GREAT multifunctional tutorial for people with forges, and lathes and drills! What would you charge for them in basic size heads? Multiple sizes/heads, so can carry say 3 of ¼,½and ⅜ sizes for different sized items? ( boy scout, do your best to do your duty to God and Country, to help other people and obey the law of the pack!) Actually, that's the cub scouts motto, but still very fitting to my world! Great tip, mediocre money maker, but still a monet maker! I saw your woodsman wedge in your video the other day, I just so very impressed with your engineering! I'd LOVE, LIKE BUCKET LIST TYPE LOVE TO WORK WITH YOU ON A PROJECT OR 1,000 OR SO! 🙏🏻 THAT ONE DREAM WILL COME TRUE!
modify that shovel handle's cross section to be that of a hatchet and it will make your strikes much more accurate and take a lot of stress off of your hands, wrists and forearms.
drill out the screw holesi in the ferrule, and use larger OD, longer bolts. Tig weld some 3/4" long segments of big nals to the bolt heads and weld nuts to the female side of the ferrule. Then you can dis and re-assemble the shovel without tools. It's often FAR more efficient to have a full length shovel handle, 2 handed axe (with stone weight) paddle, spear, or a pick/adze/rake/hoe sort of handle on the shovel. Or no handle at all when you need it as a 'big knife', SKILLET", trowel, or prybar.
If you have the extra time...brushing on some linseed oil and let it soak in will keep it from drying and cracking in years to come...and may save you from injury and more...what do you think?
Hey Dave, I've recently finished your book Buschcraft 101. If you wouldn't care, could you go over some stuff in your book. Not on anything specific, I would like to just see videos on the things you talked about in the book.

This is the stuff that's kept me around your channel for 10+ yrs
That's a great idea. I also like those dogs that you hammered into the stump. Two great ideas in one video!
I recommend deck screws because its outside all the time they won't rust. Awesome content still and info.. absolutely priceless thank you very much Sir.

You could for sure it just make the balance off
once again Dave is proving my theory that he is really Batman in disguise

Thats a slick design. I recently just made a new handle for my cold steel shovel out of osage orange. Looks amazing and i made it a little longer
That's what I'm talking about dave! Good useful tips like the good old days!
Man I did a video on upgrading the shovel handle but never would have thought of making an insert socket for the auger bits ! Your shovel looks even more russian now 😅
Cool video as always,
i remember seeing an old shovel that had a bit style shape in the shovel metal itself
That’s an awesome tool, made even more versatile. Can you talk about those bench dogs you used to hold down your workpiece? Never seen those used like that before
Great info David, as always 👍
Cheers from Italy.
Excellent idea Dave!
Hahahahahahah! That's too legit David! Genius brother!

Great video!
Great video Dave. Love it.
American ingenuity at it's finest.
Dave you are so creative i have to make one of these. You are a true O.G.
Great video! As usual! Could you talk about those holdfasts that you used on the stump? Did you forge them? I'd love to see more of them! They are a great idea!
Dave is the King
Good idea , think I will try it , as always thanks for your videos.
Dave, você é o melhor. 👍
GREAT VIDEO TO GET THOSE MINDS WORKING AGAIN. THANKS
Just brilliant Dave! Awesome project. I go back and forth between the Cold Steel and the Titanium SRO Model. The SRO TT Shovel sure is nicer to carry! I have been using a trifold on my trapline this year. It does a great job for trap beds.
Love this idea!!
Great idea, thanks for sharing
Nice ideal. I like it. Empty pouch for the Brace.
When 1 tool can do multiple things that's always an improvement.
Nice! Thanks for doing what you do, keep up the good work!
Very cool Dave, thank you!
Excellent diy for pegging two logs or boards. As you stated those hand braces are extremely tough to find in good shape😊
That Dave is a really great idea thank you for the info 👍
What a great idea!
Great tip Dave
I like that kydex shovel sheath .
Outstanding information
That is a awesome idea👍
Purdy cool. Innovative.
Alright fine. It’s official. I’m buying a new shovel! had a little Walmart one for years and have barely used it but definitely adding a better one to the kit
Excelente video gracias
Great idea. 😊

I like it, multi functional
Dave, this is so cool! Have you showed those stump holdfasts in any other videos? I try to watch all your stuff and I don't remember seeing them before

5:13 large collection of suger drills always useful sround farm
Pretty slick
Sweet idea I'll try it
Good stuff.
First. Thanks Dave 💯⚓🇺🇲🇺🇲

Morning Dave-- Havin a heat wave here in WI.😂
Aw... That's pretty groovy, there, Dave
I might do this
I always like and am interested in your content. How did the hide turn out with the eggs for tannins ?
Very cool.
Nice !
THANKS DAVE
Probably don’t need it or you would’ve done it but maybe bank line wrapped around it that way they get a good grip the adapter plate .nice job!
Nice concept! Will these metal plates be available for purchase? Thank you for another wonderful video.
Did you make the 2x72 rest for the grizzly ? Any pics on how its setup ! Love all the content , brother !!
That small pouch in your bit roll could be for a sharpening stone.
Design of holdfasts used in video, photos, thanks.
David, do you recommend building with this auger style hut everytime you need to set up camp, if you have it on ya?
Great lateral thinking yet again.

Can I ask where I can find the auger set you have and the tool wrap to store them in
Would y'all sell these and the auger bits?
Hello Dave im a young man wanting to start trapping, if want to catch possums/raccoons, do you recommend snares or duke footholds?
🔥
Oil or water hardened?
Thanks Guys
Ok dodi
Great idea, but why even take the shovel head off?
Sorry Dave if I would have listened to the video I would have heard you give that information. Great video!!
You'll have to carry the bits anyway. The T handle wouldn't be much more to have in there.
Clever idea
Pure genius.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Now change out the screws to a style that has a thumb screw and no need for screw driver!
The Bruce Lee of Bushcraft!
I have used the shovel for a frying Pan.
Doesn’t make any sense why you took the shovel part of it off why would you do that and I just use it with that
You can but it’s way out of balance
COOL
Love this idea!
