How to Use Secondary Dominant Chords to COMPOSE COLORFUL Music (Songwriting/Theory)

  • Learn how to use Secondary Dominant Chords with Music Theory and a breakdown of “The Sound of Music” masterpiece, Do Re Mi. Demonstrated on the Piano with this specific song, however, can be applied to a variety of songs with any harmonic instrument. We first look at the Chord Theory of the Major Scale, build the Primary dominant chord, and then move to form all the secondary dominant chords. In this lesson, we cover Music Theory, Ear Training, Composition & important Songwriting techniques used by the great artists.

    Thank You so much Jason. I have been singing ( and playing) this song since I was about 11 years old and only today ( 50 years later) did I learn that it was a perfect practical example of secondary dominants - virtually all of the way through. I am curious how you came to "discover" this fact. It is just so beautiful and elegant! Thank you for your sharing your talent in music and teaching with all of us.

    Hi Jason, thank you for the informative lessons, really appreciated. I just have a question regarding the secondary dominants. For C min can we use Gmin/Gmin7 as a dominant resolving to the chord C min. Please explain.
    Also can u make a video on tritone voicings as filler chords. Thanks:)

      Yes. You could also use Gmin7. But G7 sounds like a stronger resolution
