I heard an interview with Alex and Geddy where they talked about how incredibly hard this song was to record, and these guys did it flawlessly live. I hope I can find a way to see them live somewhere soon.
Yeah I've heard a similar interview with Alex talking about the difficulty of this song the live version, which is the best version by the way. You have to bear in mind, these guys are much older than Alex and Getty and Neil were when they first recorded it, I can attest being an older guy who used being production it was a full-on musician and producer. When you get older it's like the instrument is more nuanced it's easier to play... I fly through Rush stuff with ease with stuff that used to break my brain when I was a kid... They did an all right job with this one
I have to disagree. I love Mike and I am sure he didn't even have to practice or review the tabs to this beforehand to perform with YYNOT this show, mostly because he is that talented on the fly, but with that said pretty much every official YYNOT drummer has had the song down with 100% accuracy to the original, played perfectly in honor of Neil, so I would actually give them even more credit for putting in the work if we are talking about putting in that dedication and I don't see how one could imply that they couldn't do the song justice but Mike could. I still enjoy Mike's interpretation, but to me it's pretty obvious he didn't spend a lot of time learning Neil's fine details for the track.
Came back to watch this after Dream Theater announced that Mike was reuniting with the band, more excited about that after watching the first few minutes of this.
WOW. Just WOW. For die-hard RUSH fans and musicians, this song is sacred...we don't cover it because we can't do it justice. These guys just threw that dynamic out the window. When you close your eyes, you're listening to vintage Neil, Alex and Geddy.
MP was the only one I thought could fill NP's shoes in the band. Proved it that night. Cannot believe I did not know this concert was happening ...thank you whoever got such a great recording
Talk about an incredibly complex and powerful song, honestly I can’t imagine anyone doing a better cover than YYNOT. I really need to see these guys perform live!
wow that is one helluva rendition of one of the greatest instrumental rock songs of all time! excellent guitar by Billy....wicked bass by Tim and super percussion by Mike Portnoy. love his shirt with Neil Peart number 1 on the front but the back should have a number 2 on it. Great job YYNOTT !!
Tight would not be doing it justice. Love mike portnoy. I feel he is so much more creative than his successor in dream theater. while mike is not playing note for note the whole time, he’s putting his own touch on it and makes it no less than a masterpiece! Neil is smiling down on him! Bravo. Not sure why Joel stevennette left yynot, but he’s another extremely accomplished drummer !!!!
We almost decided not to make the 8 hour drive but this is a great reason why we did! I'm still in awe of the talent that showed up to pay Tribute to Neil. I felt him there in spirit for sure! Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to honor our beloved Professor...

When you hear a performance such as this, you realize that it wasn't just the magic of RUSH. This is a composition that is the equal to any heralded composition from the Classical period.
No one will ever be able to beat this cover in a million yrs.. this is hands down the best cover of this song I've ever heard in my life man.. so good.. and mike portnoy absolutely killed it.. just wow.. 🤘🤘
I was 16 when this album came out... These guys are the same age as me... Lifeson, Lee and Peart are both mine and their hero's... This is nothing short of amazing... I spent weeks learning to play this song on guitar. This is 9:02 of guys emulating their hero's... I wish I could have done the same.
I've been a RUSH fan for 45 years now, seen them a few times over the years and these guys certainly do a fantastic job on this and Portnoy definitely has some incredible chops to even come as close to Neil as he does, kudos to them😊👍
If you think for a second, all invited drummers used the same kit! Wow! Just wow!, no (I think my splash should be there, my ride is not normally there!) Truely amazing! NP would be so proud of MP and all the other amazing drummers paying tribute to him on such a wonderful occasion! And well done YYNOT, gorgeous! RIP The Professor! and thanks!
Spot on! If you have ever seen Portnoy talking about the benchmark Rush song to play on drums, he says Strangiato, and of course he plays it perfectly! Props to the YYNOT guys as, as usual, they are spot on as well!
So much talent on display here, we know Portnoy can rumble, but holy hell BILLY, and Tim you are so solid and in time, it's a credit the music, not just the original artists!
This MPs performance is to be studied in every rock academy, feeling with energy and power, but always so musical. He´s in other level of playing with feeling.
Thats real shit right there baby!! Ill never forget the first time i heard: The Trees and la villa Strangiato back in the 70s for the first time!!! Bruh, i was stuck on RUSH. I absolutely live, live, LOVE RUSH! and this is the closest I've heard to them playing it! Great job guys!!!
No question Neil would approve of this performance. And omfg does Mike look happy and in his element. Never heard of YYNOT till stumbling to a few of their videos tonight. Love quality cover bands. So very needed in this day and age with so many of the past greats no longer being with us. Reminds me of discovering Close To the Yes covering Close to the Edge. LOVE IT!!!
@@YYNOT I will try and give em a listen. Youll have to give me a pass assuming you were a cover band. With the name YYNOT and being a rush fan, its a natural conclusion. And I wasnt blowing smoke about having major respect for quality cover bands. Im personally in the camp Id rather see an amazing cover band than the real thing if their sound is CLEARLY passed its prime. But thats just me. Keep up the great work!
Best cover of this song ever and congratulations on getting to play with Portnoy, you guys killed it. Geddy and Alex should do a tour and let Portnoy play the drums that way we could see them live one more time.
Gentlemen!!! You by far are THE BEST Rush Tribute Band Ever🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻, and to Patty, your voice lends the perfect Magic this band Brings. I Am most definitely a huge fan.
@t!!! I'm at work...YYNOT upload notification...work is now on hold for 9 minutes. 😅🤣😂That's what they call WORK LIFE BALANCE right? OK, I didn't take lunch, it's all good.
Oh there's no question that Geddy and Alex know about this band. 😏 They're probably already subscribed, and following along and commenting with some goofy ass name and picture at certain times on these videos. There's no doubt that this is without doubt the best Rush cover band anywhere on the planet.
Loved Portnoy’s adrenaline version! Snare had pop!…although Mike could probably make a $10 snare sound expensive! Tim and Billy were locked in (as usual) and had no trouble matching Mike’s blistering pace! That was very kewl guys, just amazing…looked like you all had a blast that evening. Perhaps you make it an annual gig! Or maybe a different charity next year…🤔😉
Potentially the best ever cover of this song.
EVER, EVER, AND EVER!!!!

Holy shit, that guy killed it on the guitar solo. I got to say I'm impressed, LaVilla is not an easy song to play, and they nails it. BRAVO.
Professional musicians all the way. That was phenomenal.
As only a legend like Mike Portnoy can pay homage to another legend Neil Peart- 🥁🙏

Goddam! In my 45 years as a Rush fan, this has to rank up there with one of the top performances of this song. The spirit of Rush lives forever.
This really makes YYNOT legit.

Came back to watch this after Dream Theater announced that Mike was reuniting with the band, more excited about that after watching the first few minutes of this.
Portnoy confirms his status as one of the world's premier rock drummers!
Was that ever in question 😁
That position was solidified in around 1994 after the DT had Day and Dream Unite, Images And Words and most recently Awake.
Never under discussion@@pitpride1220
@ScottScottMartin87 Awake's drumming is simply out of this world.
Hats off to Billy... and Tim and Mike...
Probably the best cover of any song I've ever heard. That's an extremely difficult song with a lot of nuance and everyone nailed it. Amazing!
Lifelong Rush fan here... That was fucking epic!! Portnoy's expression at the end said it all. Thank you.
