We’re in the exhibition hall at Australian Technology Park in Sydney for the global unveiling of the Toyota HiLux Tonka concept, which is based on the top-spec double-cab SR5,
A little playground with dirt, hills and giant building bricks has been set up inside the massive building to show off its capabilities.
The new 2017 Toyota HiLux TRD is also being launched and there’s a more industrial looking course laid out for it.
First I’m in the HiLux Tonka concept and this is the only one in the world, and sadly only a couple of lucky people are allowed to drive it. So it’s the passenger seat for me.
This black and yellow beast has been engineered for off-road adventures.
The ride height has been raised by 150mm thanks to a high riding axle, it has heavy duty suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 35-inch tyres, a new front bumper, carbon fibre bonnet skin with a power bulge, LED lighting to help see where you’re going in the dark or in the thick of the bush and thick alloy bash plates.
Nothing has changed under the bonnet of both the HiLux Tonka concept and the HiLux TRD, which is also based on the SR5 double-cab.
The TRD (Toyota Racing Development) pack adds a red skid plate, new black grill, bumper cover, fender flares, 18-inch alloy wheels and black sports bar, plus a towing kit.
It may be unusual to be doing this type of driving indoors, but who cares?

Why can't they put the twin turbo V8 out of the Landcruiser into the TRD Hiliux
H Maccas and you cant go far for offroad
cos the hilux front end isnt wide enough for it, the d8d v8(for lack of better abbreviation) is really wide, so wide they had to re-do the troopy front end to fit it in, aparently even 100 series landcruisers will only just fit it, but with a lot of fucking around cutting and modifying ect.

TRD hilux should've been a supercharged v6 or supercharged 2UZ v8, hell maybe even the v8 out of the land cruiser

don't worry its easy to pay them just to modify your ordinary hilux.. It all matters in engine and .. but we can modify the rest.. just use money.. jaja

the hilux wont struggle with the 35's if its diff ratios are corrected, also hilux isnt garbage its known as most reliable and popular truck in the world. the o.p made a mistake comparing the two because they are so different.

One of my family friends have the 2017 Toyota Hilux TRD and it was the least powerful at the sand dunes it sunk in the sand and whenever someone accelerates the tires wouldn't even move it was the worst
mehdi taleghani as someone who has done a lot of dune driving in a lot of cars I can say pretty confidently that it probably wasn't the hilux's fault that it got bogged. That sort of thing usually comes down to the tyre pressure and how it's being driven (and when I say usually I mean 95% of the time). Sorry mate but maybe you should stop blaming the car and start blaming the driver

your wrong. I live in Norway and Arctic truck put 35-38'' tires on lots of hilux. You dont only go big tires you also change the gear ration in the diff's. a orginal hilux VS a 38'' Hilux.. no diffrence to drive or you dont loos any power. =) as i know my friends 37'' hilux go more fast then a orginal one...

Agree. Toyota is abusing TRD name. This is no "racing development". How ever it modes, like the reviewer says "nothing changes under the bonnet". It is not a F150

Toyota manufacturer , should take heed about the vast majority of their loyal customers and consumers are taking Nissan vehicles rather than Toyota vehicles because first of all Toyota manufacturer is not listening or theirs dealers t dealerships staying too long to update Toyota on many faults , Toyota vehicles engines both gasoline and diesels needed much more horsepowers and torques, look at what Nissan and Honda manufacturers doing towards engines with powers, powerful engines and efficiencies.
