    There needs to be more tutorials like this. A lot of people don't just have one single midi controller, such as Push 2. All the videos I've seen.... hardly anyone is covering this subject.

    Morning. I'm your newest sub.
    New laptop arriving today.
    Ableton Live
    Bought APC mini
    Bought Akai LPD8
    Own midi kybd and usb mixer
    Own blue yeti usb mic
    Own Boss GT-1 (usb out)
    Woke up wondering how the hell am I going to get connected..

    I use the M-Audio Keystation 61 and an Akai APC Key 25. The Akai, when octave shifted, covers the bass notes and has the triggers and the Keystation covers everything else. Kind of like having an 88 Key with triggers but a lot less expensive.

    Thanks a lot for this tutorial. It's super helpful to see how to choose channels in Session View. Do you possibly have an explanation (or a helpful link) of the cables, the multiport USB thing, and how you route all of them through the interface? I'm trying to set up a situation just like this but haven't used multiple controllers before. Thanks so much -Matt

    Nice tutorial, thanks for sharing. Is it possible to assign parts of a midi controller? Say the drumpads to the drums and the keyboard to the piano?

    • @mjorn4722
      @mjorn4722 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure! What you're looking for is an instrument rack containing piano and drums. You can assign certain note ranges to each instrument (drum pads usually start with the low C)
      The problem you might run into would be that the piano wouldn't play those lowest notes the drums are assigned to, but it's usually not too critical, and fixable by assigning different midi channels to each section (in a hardware setup utility)

    I have 2 identical MIDI MIX connected to my Mac. How can I send different info on both these similar MIDI MIXES?
    I keep having the issue of moving one fader in Ableton (ex: CC23) and it automatically affects the other knob also triggered by CC23 on the other midi mixer.
    Any solutions?

    Nice and clear thank you! My main issue is now making the 4 sequencers of my keystep pro controlling each one an hardware synth one 4 different midi channels to work together with the Push 2 sequencer, which has no different midi channels so big conflicts ...
    It's kinda tricky! I think I ll just have to work one either the Push or either the keystep pro. Two at once is over complicated

      its arbitrary really. Since I selected the push under "Midi From" irregardless of which midi channel it is outputting, It will isolate that device on that track. I could have left it on "omni" and still, since it is selected in "midi from" it would still only "listen to signals from the push"

I can correctly assign and control ableton with my BSP, however I cannot get rid of the noticeable latency between me pressing a pad and it triggering (any) virtual instruments. My work around is to only use the step sequencer, that way I can time it correctly. This eliminates my ability to live record into the sequencer though because my timing will always be off. What if you want all of your controllers to be able to control a selected track, but only that track which is currently selected ? In other words, anytime i select a new track i want to access it from any of my controllers without them controlling any other track at the same time (because that would result in multiple sounds playing at once). Would i do the opposite, i.e. NOT selecting a specific controller for each track and leaving the midi channel for each track at "1", or would i assign a different midi channel for each track ? I'm a little confused here :)

But, when I go to perform sometimes the knobs will control the parameters of the other synth or vice versa. I tried to assign each track to only receive midi information from one controller via the channels and "all ins." box. but, It's still not working. question for you: I have an apc40 and a midi controller (m audio oxygen 25) connected to live, but for some reason there are some settings or knobs that are overlapping, even though I map it correctly, but ableton is assigning it to both of my controllers, do you know what´s going on? thanks in advance.

    • @SeedtoStage
      @SeedtoStage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible that you have the controllers set up as "control surfaces" as opposed to using them in the midi ports. If you deactivate their default control mappings via the control surface section and enable them to be mini mapped (via the "track" and "remote" switches), you can create your own mappings instead of the default mappings that they use as control surfaces. I personally find it pretty useful to leave my main control surface "push 2" on, but have a secondary midi controller mapped to other commonly used controls.

    • @SeedtoStage
      @SeedtoStage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      most likely you are dealing with the fact that both of those controllers have special midi control scripts associated with them known as ableton "control surfaces" if you look in the midi preferences, you can disable the control surface features so you can freely map the controls manually.

    hey! this series is awesome and I can't wait to see it develop! had a quick question related to this you may be able to answer. i've recently added a used APC 40 to my set up, but unfortunately the 6th fader has shorted out and acts all glitchy. I tried switching track 6 to only take midi from my Push which didn't deactivate the volume slider. I'd like to basically turn that fader off if at all possible. Thanks for your time!

    • @SeedtoStage
      @SeedtoStage  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Collective Disparity ok so its important to note that you are most likely using your apc40 as a "control surface" and not a standard midi controller. the difference is that a control surface in live is present mapped to various controls in live. If the apc40 is being used in this way then no matter what device or channel you are assigning to the track, the control surface setting will always supercede manual mappings. now I will need to get home to test this, but in my experience in the past, you could effectively remove control surface presets by going into the script and editing it, or using a different controller and mapping a midi controller to it. Until I can test, go into usermode with your push and map on of the grid buttons to the volume slider for track six and see if that removes the default mapping.

      ah sweet! good to know about control surface defaults. I couldn't get mapping Push to overwrite it, as both mappings still worked simultaneously, but I'm going to look into editing the script. I really hadn't understood user mode on the push at all before, so that feels like a door just opened up. appreciate the help!

      For sure. I can tell you as an avid push fan, between user mode and the standard control push gives you, the push could easily be your only controller. User mode is incredible and I intend on creating a lot of Push specific videos coming up soon here ;)

      I would love to learn how to optimize my Push 1's functionality for all improvisational uses in the live. Hopefully I can transfer some of the concepts from the Push 2 videos and apply them to the 1. I feel like I am missing out on the Push 2 but I must say I like the chunkier pads of the 1 more than the 2's but the 2's pads are more accurate of course lol Thanks for the vids Anthony, keep em comin :)

      I did not know this difference between control surfaces having preset maps that you have to edit with script. I don't even know what script is yet - coding language ?

    I think ableton has made this part pretty self-explanatory. Of course, you would want to assign each channel to each different instrument. The fun part is when ableton can't read the instrument and you have to map out each key to specific buttons filling in the piano roll manually. I'm trying to use two keyboards to act as a piano so I can have 4 octaves across. And ... I guess I have to hunt down a midi mapping tutorial. Everytime I click the midi button or key button at the top right... there's no highlighted piano roll keys. Now, i did see 2 small arrows talking about going left or right... that was interesting. Maybe if I smash my face against this keyboard more it might start making more sense?
