So...here I am a 67 year old woman who only wishes I had had your self confidence at any time in my life. Bad comments aside for now, you are doing something so right for someone so young. You have expanded my reading life like no other. Your reading War and Peace and crying while doing so gave me the (courage?) to read it. It was my first book of 2022 and I am grateful. There are images from it in my head forever now...beautiful images. Taking your bad comments and turning them into recs was a brilliant idea. Reminded me of "I'm rubber, your glue. The words bounce off me and stick to you." I have a feeling that whatever you do, you will succeed. Thanks for the great content.
A piece of advice: don't take haters too seriously, you can read the critical comments from time to time but it's not essential that you read all the hate from some people. And about pale skin, it's all a matter of taste... I personally like your skin color because I'm from a Latin American country where most people are very tanned...🤍
Yeah. I can't imagine writing a hate comment about anything. If I don't like something, I move on. No need for the "I don't like it therefore nobody should" comments.
1) It didn't even cross my mind that you receive hate comments wow 2) This is the most amazing way to handle negative comments. You literally inspired me to handle negativity better by making this video. Thank you, amazing human ☺️
Some people on the internet truly have nothing better to do sometimes but be ugly, nasty and vile. Please remember it's not your fault and you don't deserve this.
So sad to hear that so many of these haters are male. As a male I can say that you are one of the major reasons I have got back into reading. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into your videos, it shows.
Emma, I'm a primary school (elementary) teacher here in Australia and I really feel like showing portions of this video to my students as an example of how nasty, bullying comments can be deflected with such grace, erudition, and intelligence (and just the perfect amount of sass!) This is a great example of resilience in the face of hostility and young people need examples like you more than ever. You have done this so well and to throw in book recommendations as an added bonus...brilliant. Thanks so much. Anthony - Sydney, Australia
People hating on long videos while I quite literally shriek with joy whenever I see a video of yours that is longer than 30 minutes. This was so funny and unexpectedly heart warming, Emma. Thank you!
Emma, you're awesome. I hope those comments never get to you, not even for a second. You've gathered such a beautiful community on your channel, and your videos bring so much joy 🖤. Some people are just insecure assholes that try to bring themselves up by putting others down. They got nothing on you.
I am much older than you, Emma, but your channel has given me insight and education. I love so many of your quotes and today's is probably my favorite so far: (Are you just trying to sound smart?): "Well, I'm not trying to sound stupid." Beautiful. I guarantee I am going to use that if ever the need arises!

Emmie is the light of my TH-cam life. How dare you put her down?! Glad you roll with it girlie ❤️ I love you, calcifer, and your bookish content! Also your hair is so shiny, healthy, and beautiful in this video. You are thriving ✨️🫶
The comments about "what are you gonna do with your degree" are so relatable to me. I'm a history major (currently doing my master) and all I ever get is either that question or "sooo you wanna be a teacher then, right?". No Susan, I don't wanna teach kids. Don't get me wrong, I have the highest respect for teachers, but I could never. I think what I love about my degree (and what you probably also love about yours) is that it gives us the ability to acquire knowledge we're interested in, but doesn't pigeonhole to just doing one specific job. Sure, it's not as safe as studying law or medicine and just knowing you'll be a doctor or attorney, but it gives us more freedom to pursue many different things that we're passionate about. I could never imagine just doing one thing as a job for my entire life. That's just me.
This video is pure genius 🤌🏻. Such a queen honestly. You are such a ray of sunshine Emma. I appreciate your messages in this video. A lot really resonated with me. So thank you for your content 💕
The book consumption as a food pyramid made me think! Havent thought this through well but: - widest part of the pyramid (carbs) should be the books/genres i really love reading and are easy to read as the bulk of what makes me full - next level (veggies) are the 'healthy' books that are challenging and expands my view - meat/proteins - genres i dont typically go for but sometimes have a craving of - tippy top, consume in moderarion (junk food) - trash!! Terrible books that are fun but could not subsist on
It blows my mind how young you are and the wisdom that comes out of your mouth. I’m retired. I am very impressed by your words. Putting yourself out there for strangers to watch/love/criticize or even dislike is something I would have never done. The one thing I have learned from my own experiences throughout life is that the more critical a person is, the more unhappy they are in there own lives. Keep up the great work.
I’m similar age group and I too am super impressed by Emmie. I used to be on Twitter but couldn’t deal with the haters. I wished I’d thought of Emmie’s approach at the time.
Something is happening with my gender. I don’t fully understand it but It appears that if you value kindness, compassion, empathy and equality that you are seen as less than or “beta”. I am trying everyday to be as beta as I can. Love this video. You get it.
i deeply appreciate how calm and non-aggressive you react to haters. it truly doesnt affect you, and that is role model behavior. there was another youtuber i watched, on a topic i loved but they were quite contraversial, and when i tried to give them some critical feedback, they outright attacked me to the point that they portrayed themselves as a victim and demanded respect publically by screenshotting my comment on their instagram. it was traumatic for me, but she ended up doing it to anyone who said anything even remotely negative. so thank you, for having humor towards negativity and keeping your channel and comments friendly and open, regardless of whats said.
I really love the way you described the books we read being together with us, like living inside our hearts and minds and just being there that we can hear, smell, and taste them whenever we come across them deep inside our memory lane. It really resonates with me and made me think about the way I view myself as a reader. Plus I wanted to thank you for the content you make, haters can go to hell. I have been following you for 2 years now and believe me when I say whenever I see a notification from you, my heart lights up, and the minutes I spend watching your videos are the golden time of my day. So thank you very much. Love all the way from Morocco 🇲🇦.
Regarding what you're saying at 22:49, I feel like sometimes people on the internet will see someone like you, an intelligent, beautiful girl, and they'll create a mental image in their head of what they think that you are.. and I feel like it very often starts to see-saw into the Manic Pixie Dream Girl type who only reads old literature and never delves into the "trash" that younger people read nowadays... and it's like, as soon as you shatter their mental image of you (by reading books that maybe they deem less *important* than books like Paradise Lost, War and Peace, "literature", etc.) they get like offended or something that you you're own person with your own tastes and preferences, and that you can be multi-faceted and enjoy War and Peace while also enjoying YA and Romance?? It's bizarre. I have no idea if the point I'm trying to make makes any sense at all lmao but I hope you get it. The point being, those people are DUMB and pls read whatever the hell you want.
These hate comments are only made by people who are so miserable in their own lives that they take it on others. Don’t let the haters get you down, Emma! We love you! ❤
Hi Emma I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your videos. They are always so full of insight, wisdom and witty commentary. I’ve actually been dying to know what your annotation process is like and was reminded again after seeing your heavily tabbed phantom of the opera book (which is amazing btw, I always love seeing all the different colored tabs hinting at all the gorgeous genius to be discovered within the book’s pages). I would just love to know how you annotate books and organize the thoughts and ideas you have while reading. Thanks!
I love the way you handled/responded to the haters. On a side note; my mom passed away from C in December 2020…I had to clean out her house in summer of 2021. I listened to the audiobooks of the Shatter Me Series…they carried me through a very difficult time and I will always carry the feelings & emotions those books evoked inside me. They helped carry the burden of my loss. I’m tearing up just remembering the love I have for those books.
"I'm not trying to sound stupid" haha yes this is everything. Great video and I liked this video even before I started watching it. Booktube would be empty without your thoughts on these books.
This was perfect, I wrote down a few of the recs and love the idea of replying to hate comments with book recs. Lol. That'd be hilarious! I agree with your take on so many of these things, it's such a beautiful way of looking at life.
You look so confident and happy talking about what you love, dear Emma. That shows you chose the best path. When I first saw you I thought of what Anastasia Steele's life would have been if she had preferred the right way. You're stunning as the actress, but your intellect and self-realization make you a complete gem. This combination cannot leave haters alone. Those people just have no passion in life and little attention to themselves. We love you, sunshine 💛
You talking about the value of an English degree made me so happy. That's what my BA is in, and I will die on the hill of it's value. Your sentiments really mirrored my own. Am so excited that you'll talk about this more in a separate video!
I just wanted to say that I love your videos and you are a great inspiration for me. You and Caroline have inspired me to begin reading classics and I love watching your videos when I need to destress and take a moment for myself. Something about your voice makes me focus completely, which is almost like meditation to me. ❤️❤️❤️
I love this video so, so much. Us English majors and artists are tired of justifying our choices and existence to people in our lives, I can only imagine how annoying it's to receive these anonymous comments online. We've heard all the jokes about our future financial state and the uselessness of our degree. We know what we're getting into from the start. The fact that some people don't see the value in what we do, doesn't mean that it's not valuable. Belittling our degree just because it isn't going to cure a disease is an ignorant take, at best. Literature might not save lives on the surface, but it has saved mine many times and provided an escape from the darkest chasms of my mind. Sending love to you, Emmie, and I'm really looking forward to your video! xx
Regarding 22:49, I have small children and the desire of my heart is to make them strong readers. One thing I hadn't done to lead them to enjoy reading is actually enjoy it for myself. Wow. You have been a great resource for highbrow literature as well as books aren't highbrow. I love it all and I appreciate that you love it all as well.
Love you Emma! I love middle grade and children's books and read them still and I'm in my 50's! Who cares what you love, it's wonderful. Read every age group; children's books, middle grade, ya, adult . . . Romance is warm and fuzzy if it's good quality. I can't wait for your video on your English degree. Looking forward!
I genuinely don’t understand how anyone could write such negative things to a person who exudes such positivity. You are SUCH a bright light in this world ☀️
I love the longer videos. It's the opposite of the current tiktok culture. Readers clearly love being immersed in things, immersing ourselves in reading books, so it's easy and desirable for us to immerse ourselves in long videos ABOUT books. It's funny that that dude clearly didn't realise he could watch a long video in parts.
This video really made me stop and think. What a great way to respond to the negativity and baseness that at first thought one would simply choose to ignore as not worth one’s time and attention!! Good for you for taking the high road and providing a model to others for how to respond such people. Keep doing what you do- you are obviously appreciated by so many!
Maybe someone mentioned this already but now I’d love to see you turn happy, lovely comments into book recommendations. I expect you get a lot of those but take a handful of ones that meant a lot to you and turn them into a book recommendation. I enjoy your channel, this is a nice way to handle the haters.
The irony of posting a hate comment about no job opportunities with an english degree… on a video that you probably got paid to make… talking about LITERATURE 😩
Hey Emma, I just found your channel tonight and already watched 3 of your videos and commented suggestions for you. I will tell you this. I find you very interesting, very bright and motivating. Don’t pay attention to the haters who send hateful comments.. they’re just losers and probably jealous of your intellect and knowledge. I find you adorable and love your humour. Also I just found out from this video that you’re Canadian, which makes me love you even more and makes me proud because I’m Canadian also. I wrongly assumed at first that you were American and so happy to know that you’re Canadian. Keep it up on your reading. It’s a fantastic hobby… I’m a big reader myself and would never stop. Cheers
Hello Emma. I hope these hateful comments don't affect you. I love your videos, they brighten up my days. I don't often write comments, but I listen faithfully to your videos. I want to say thank you for everything.
Hate comments in book recommendations is hard to grasp. I found your content just recently and all I can say is I am grateful for it. Less importantly, and as creepy as it might sound, you are a beautiful woman and that just adds to the pleasure of watching your content. I hope you continue with this great effort of sharing your experiences in reading and are able to brush off the non-sense that a public platform brings. Know that I, and I am positive that the majority of your audience, appreciate what you do and how you do it.
also, to reference the comment saying your videos are too long: i love the length of your videos genuinely! i watch them while i’m getting ready for work or school and it makes me feel like i have a buddy w me
You’re the greatest bean! The wonderful human you are far outshines them all. We love you, Emma!!! (My orange, fluffy boy says the same to you and Calcifer by stating, “Meow.”) ❤️
Your mini-rant about majoring in English hit so hard, haha. I'm only a few months away from getting my English degree and I'm so excited for all of the doors it's going to open for me. I also tried to be a STEM major for a while, but I was miserable and writing/reading was the one field where I felt I would learn the most and be able to fully immerse myself. I've been working on my degree for four years and now that I'm in the final stretch, I'm so happy I allowed myself to pursue what I loved. Loved this video concept, btw :D
Your videos bring me so much joy! You re-sparked my love for reading and writing (and gave me the encouragement to follow my dreams to an English degree). You're amazing, please keep making content that makes you happy 🥰
I'm so sorry you have to read these stupid comments. You are beautiful and amazing. I really love all your content, even when I don't relate with the books... Just because everything you say is pure melody to my ears 😂
We need more positive people like you in our lives. You could ignore these hateful comments, instead you turned them into something productive and even suggested books for us. Thank you, keep smiling

That's just me.
well-said!
The comment reaction to w3tfarts has me DEAD 💀 Thanks for turning such silly comments into a great video, Emma. You deserve nothing but love ☺️
This video is pure genius 🤌🏻. Such a queen honestly. You are such a ray of sunshine Emma. I appreciate your messages in this video. A lot really resonated with me. So thank you for your content 💕
pleaseee i love your long videos! don't shorten them 😭
Nothing is more classy than recommending haters books 💅🏻 such a queen ✨
The book consumption as a food pyramid made me think! Havent thought this through well but:
- widest part of the pyramid (carbs) should be the books/genres i really love reading and are easy to read as the bulk of what makes me full
- next level (veggies) are the 'healthy' books that are challenging and expands my view
- meat/proteins - genres i dont typically go for but sometimes have a craving of
- tippy top, consume in moderarion (junk food) - trash!!
I just want to let you know I really appreciate your book recommendations. I tend to read a variety of different books so thanks again.
I'm excited for your english degree careers video!! These were great breakdowns and recommendations.
You're so smart, resourceful and innovative for turning those comments into an awesome rec video Emma!
Thanks!
Such a interesting idea! But really, I find it so sad that you get mean comments when all I get from you are positive vibes!
Sending love to you, Emmie, and I'm really looking forward to your video! xx
I absolutely loved this video! Your sense of humor is just *chef's kiss* ♥
Love the way you've approached this topic!! Love your channel and your content!! Also, great idea not giving any of your time to the creeps. 🤗🤗❤️
Happy to see you having some fun with these hate comments, but also bums me out that anyone could hate on you. you’re a gosh darn delight!
Looking forward!
i love how you talked about “trash” so interesting like everything in the pyramid has its own specific purpose
I genuinely don’t understand how anyone could write such negative things to a person who exudes such positivity. You are SUCH a bright light in this world ☀️
GOD that monologue about books and physicality and their permanence outside decaying paper ENTRANCED ME
I love the longer videos. It's the opposite of the current tiktok culture. Readers clearly love being immersed in things, immersing ourselves in reading books, so it's easy and desirable for us to immerse ourselves in long videos ABOUT books. It's funny that that dude clearly didn't realise he could watch a long video in parts.
Had me rofl so hard. 😂😂 Like come on. Think man, think!!
Emmie always comes up with such unique book recommending concepts! It's literally the coolest
I find you to be a bright young woman with noble intentions and a passion for the amazement of words. Carry On!
4:36 "'Are you just trying to sound smart?' Well I'm not trying to sound stupid" LOL 😂
emma… you are absolutely iconic and brilliant for this
This video really made me stop and think. What a great way to respond to the negativity and baseness that at first thought one would simply choose to ignore as not worth one’s time and attention!! Good for you for taking the high road and providing a model to others for how to respond such people. Keep doing what you do- you are obviously appreciated by so many!
I have so many questions for these people..just...sooo....many
Maybe someone mentioned this already but now I’d love to see you turn happy, lovely comments into book recommendations. I expect you get a lot of those but take a handful of ones that meant a lot to you and turn them into a book recommendation.
I enjoy your channel, this is a nice way to handle the haters.
I can't explain the unique feeling of joy I get when I see a new emmie video 🥺 I love quite literally every video uploaded
Emma is absolutely spitting in this video. I have enjoyed this tremendously, please keep these videos coming!
THIS IS DROP THE MIC AMAZING!!! I still can’t comprehend though why anyone would say things like this to you.
Handled hatred with pure class! ❣️
i thought so too :)
Know that I, and I am positive that the majority of your audience, appreciate what you do and how you do it.
the "you're a nasty little goblin" comment is so funny to me
I could not stop laughing when I read it😂
@@emmiereads honestly, the best compliment
also, to reference the comment saying your videos are too long: i love the length of your videos genuinely! i watch them while i’m getting ready for work or school and it makes me feel like i have a buddy w me
You’re the greatest bean!
You are intelligent, articulate, and very interesting. I love your channel! Many blessings 🙏🏼
Same for me! 🙂 We love you, Emma!!
We need more positive people like you in our lives. You could ignore these hateful comments, instead you turned them into something productive and even suggested books for us. Thank you, keep smiling
