Kgalagadi: What are the wilderness trails like? [Kgalagadi Ep 2]

  • After hosting 10 lions in our campsite in the previous episode [ • Ten Lions in our camp ... ] in this episode we drive the Mosomane and Polentswa Wilderness Eco Trails in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park which straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana. This entails camping unfenced 95km from the nearest humans. The wilderness trails on the Botswana side of the park provide a true wilderness experience. With large predators wandering freely through your camp it is up to you to act sensibly and to stay safe - we never encountered a game ranger. Only one group at a time is allowed on the trails so if you are craving seclusion this is for you. According to park rules you have to be a group of at least two vehicles though. We saw a wide variety of wildlife, including Springbok, Bat-eared foxes, Gemsbok (Oryx), Ostrich, Red Hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Steenbok, Eland, Lion and Cheetah as well as prolific birdlife. We again saw lions up close and even witnessed a Cheetah kill (unfortunately quite far away). We were amazed to find a pan with water in it, complete with wading birds. We had to deal with dry grasses accumulating around our vehicles’ exhaust systems and grass seeds blocking radiators despite the use of a seed net - but it was certainly worthwhile. We stayed at Mosomane, Nossob, Polentswa, Sesatswe and Lang Rambuka campsites.

Some lovely footage, especially of the oryx running alone away from the camera on that pan. Also, really interesting to see the red hartebees display.

Wow, that's a big compliment from someone with a channel like yours. Yes, we were very surprised at the water in Sesatswe pan which even featured some wading birds. As we approached we initially thought it's a mirage!

Awesome video! What an amazing adventure you guys had! I happen to notice the massive rig you have/build for your camera on the car, is this something you bought somewhere or made yourself? We are planning a longer trip to Southern Africa and looking for gimmick just like these as we love taking pictures!

Net so! Maar ons gebruik kitskoffie en dis glad nie "cinematic" nie. Mens kan glad nie daardie stadige aksie drup drup van die koffie doen nie...

Netjies, die afwesigheid van holruggeryde koffie, kos en karre is verfrissend.

Stem saam - wil 'n dokumentêr sien, nie iemand se vakansie video nie. Het self die Mabuasehube na Nossob roete in April gedoen en het mooier Kalahari landskappe en meer wild gesien as wat ek verwag het.
