So to sum up: The best thing about S1 is the world building. The worst about S1 is that there's not enough of it. The best thing about S2 are the characters. The worst about S2 is that there's not enough of that. To me, it sounds like the show succeeded in what it was trying to achieve.
I liked how the Otherworldly café doesn't just connect it's characters in the café but how the worlds of those characters are connected as well. Season two did this more than season one.
On a positive note, a new chapter did come out in March, and Tsukushi has indicated that he has the next arc of the series fully scripted already and knows exactly where the story is headed. Mainly I just hope he takes care of himself; he's one of the very few working mangaka with only one part-time assistant, which is absolute madness and explains the series' schedule pretty well.
To me it's also a Master Piece. I went into this anime blind without anyone telling me about it ( I occasionally do a random anime watch ). And wow it was so amazing I couldn't believe it didn't have a huge following until I went to MAL and found the Tweeter mob there doing their usual.
I honestly don’t understand the big issue, even tho a lot of the characters are underwritten they leave it all to imagination, from cues you can understand perfectly everything about Vazukian, Belafu, Vueko or Irumiuy, we don’t need every detail about the characters to understand them to the deepest level and that actually is a compliment to Sukushis writting style, letting you experience the characters to the deepest level with so little information and with so much mistery (which is one of the most important pillars of the story). I think showing too much of some elements in a story can be dangerous too and cause overexposition. And yes, we could have more with characters like Belaf but that could opaque the construction of the main characters like Wazukian or Vueko and he is still an extremely functional character that portrays his themes with no mistake.
This felt like a video with 300,000 views at minimum. I don't know what else to say. A review of this caliber, with this level of consideration and professionalism put into analyzing every component of the show and their true holistic value to the experience... Bravo man. Putting out shit this high quality will only lead you to great places. You just need a little bit of that algorithm magic, seriously.
Good review although i disagree with a lot of what you said , especially about riko character was amazing this season , first 6 episodes she was by far the most important character and she have many top tier moments like when she frees veuko and she said she doesn't care about her being a bad person as long as she gets her goal and in ep 6 she straight up beat a huge monster just by using her intelligence making evrey one whining about her know that she's not useless even though she never was , or in ep 9 when she automatically analyzed wazukyan entire character or at ep 12 when she tells wazukyan its never gonna happen the way her want it to be or her entire relationship with ma , like honestly besides faputa she was the MVP of the season by far

Definitely not animation, look at the 2D animations of the creatures in s1 compared to s2 blend with cgi that is still noticeable, all because one guy responsible for those animations didn’t return for s2 along with few others
This season was amazing, but I agree that having more slow moments in the ganja's backstory would have made it perfect. The soundtrack is also in an interesting position. After listening to the entire ost, there are definitely some unused tracks and I have no idea why since they ended up reusing a few. Don't get me wrong, I still loved it, but there are much fewer instances of weirdly placed & returning tracks in s1. That said, simply the fact that Faputa is in this season and Reg's mystery is further unraveled ranks it higher than season 1 in my book overall. Although I'd still have to rate the movie higher. If season 2 is a 9, Dawn of the Deep soul is a 10. Anyone still refusing to give this series a try (and I know quite a few) Is seriously missing out. I completely agree on the OST- it felt lacking even if the music IS on par with the previous season and movie Or at the very least... it didn't EXPLODE out as tracks did in their previous implementations. I feel the movie is the best implementation of the OST so far. Just, something is different. I know Kevin hated the pandemic, and very likely had to conduct over Zoom calls, mix it at home and then on top of that the implementation of those tracks, something was just - noticibly less impactful about it. I still adore this season, and the story so far in spite of the shortcommings-

This is not really a criticism but more of a hope that moving forwards I hope Akihito returns and expands upon the same conflicts that were the most interesting in season one. With the movie and season two there were interesting moral conflicts between our heroes and the characters around them but in season one the conflicts were less about being versus a villain or antagonist and more about the situation being antagonistic to them and the characters silently having to grapple with needing to do the right thing in the most difficult situations by themselves with little influence from the other characters who are driving the plot forward. I really hope Akihito can expand on this specific theme later in the story because it's really what drew me in to this story.
That can't be the way conflict goes forever there has to be a mix between both so that it doesn't become too predictible of a situation. Oh here we go! another creature who is going to get injured this time? oh boy! another creature! again! and on the next episode guess whats going to happen....... Also there is a limit on how much you can push a character to grow on that premise, so you have to introduce other characters to introduce new ideas and conflict. A creature and scenery looses its interest so fast compared to well written characters. Thats why we keep talking about bondrew and not the spikey boi on the 4th layer.
They could fix the criticized point by inserting another movie, which fleshes out the story of the Ganja squad. This would also fix the problem of the waiting time for the S3. The movie would not necessarily get a manga with the same quality than the rest of the story first.
This may help provide some context about Nanachi being non-existent in season 2. Tsukushi originally planned on having Nanachi die during the Bondrewd arch, and having them become the white whistle. After Nanachi was introduced in the story though, the manga finally caught major attention and became a fan favorite character. He elected not to kill them off in that arch. Of course, now Tsukushi had to figure out what to do with Nanachi during this arch, where they weren't supposed to exist. This was the unfortunate result. That said, he'll likely incorporate Nanachi better into the next arch. Will have had more time to think about how to do it more organically.
It is pretty crazy that I heard literally nobody talk about S2. I think the gap between S1/S2 and people not knowing if they had to watch the movie or not really threw a wrench in the momentum
I just get so godamn confused with this show season 1 and the movie are some of my favourite things ever but as far as I’m concerned the show ended with bondreweds exit. Everything I read afterwards made no sense to the point that it felt like I read it while I was asleep.

I think one thing interesting about saying that the Flashback needed more time is that the flashback did have more time that is often ignored and that is in the first episode. If you really think about it the full flashback was three episodes long counting the first episode and the sprinkled scenes throughout other episodes.

I agree on the one flaw you highlighted - of all the missed opportunities, I think Vueko x Pakkoyan relationship is the most unfortunate one. This could've been the greatest upgrade to the manga this season, and they blew it up. However, Vueko's story overall is masterfully executed apart from this, it left me weeping so damn hard for so damn long, and I consider her the true protagonist of Season 2. However, the most significant drawback, in my opinion, is how the mangaka deals with Nanachi. Bringing back Mitty after the masterpiece arc of Season 1 was a grave mistake, plain and simple. It cheapens what Nanachi's been through, what Reg's been through and just set back then repeat Nanachi's character arc... only in a much less impactful way. Just because of this, I don't think Season 2 is on par with Season 1 in the story department. I do admit though, that it moves the grand narrative forward in great lengths, deepening our understading of how the Abyss works and what the fundamental concepts of it are. All that being said, I can only compare Made in Abyss installments to each other, this series is way up and above all other adventure anime, period.

Only thing that made it a 9/10 instead of a 10/10 for me is that Faputa's Speech, and the Turbonid dragons' fun party time afterwards where such incredible amazing moments of peak anime, that the series actual last episode felt a bit lackluster in comparation to what just happened.

Using the precedence of episode 9 isn't wise in my opinion. It's an entirely filler episode that adds nothing, instead it dumbs both Riko and Reg down in the service of stretching out a layer that didn't need to be. There is nothing new added in said episode that doesn't already get told later in the same season. There is nothing that is vital and can not be removed, which is why it is removed almost completely in the movie and no one cared.
My favorite is still the movie. I think it’s absolutely perfect. S2 was underwhelming for me tho, I found the backstory not really interesting at all although episode 10 of S2 is still a masterclass of an episode, and probably the best in the series excluding the movie

We need a made in abyss video game. No not the Nintendo Switch game I'm talking a PC game with graphics maxed and the world populated with monsters as much as Technically possible. It would be an awesome exploration game. No they should not add the main Cast in the game. You should be able to customize a character for yourself and start exploring the abyss and earn your whistles until you can progress to the lower floors.
Season 1 was amazing. The movie was a drastic departure. It was good, but I ultimately ordered a cake and got ice cream. Yeah, I love ice cream. But I wanted a cake. I still haven't watched season 2, probably never will, just because of how little of what I wanted was delivered by the movie, and how much time that bitterness has had to ferment in my soul.

It's definitely something you have to be willing to look past or accept if you want to get into the series. Thematically I appreciate how gross the series can be at times but the author definitely takes it too far a lot, it's actually toned down in the anime compared to the manga too lol.
I haven't watched season 2 because I'm afraid nothing could live up to season 1.... I did watch the movie and it was also great but I'm truly afraid to go further.
It would be a great anime if it wasn't weird about kids and was more straight forward rather than purple prosing basic plot elements until you can barely see the context anymore. Kids going down into hell and not seeing it as such would be an interesting story but these aren't kids, they're weird fetish bait that's way more competent than they ought to be.
i've not seen a single person besides you say this season is worse than the previous season. idk how you could even think that considering the writing is much better and the arc overall is just a much better than the previous arcs. its only been getting better where early on and most of season 1 was just setup

We need a made in abyss video game. No not the Nintendo Switch game I'm talking a PC game with graphics maxed and the world populated with monsters as much as Technically possible. It would be an awesome exploration game. No they should not add the main Cast in the game. You should be able to customize a character for yourself and start exploring the abyss and earn your whistles until you can progress to the lower floors.

Season 1 was amazing.
The movie was a drastic departure. It was good, but I ultimately ordered a cake and got ice cream. Yeah, I love ice cream. But I wanted a cake.
I still haven't watched season 2, probably never will, just because of how little of what I wanted was delivered by the movie, and how much time that bitterness has had to ferment in my soul.
Do yourself a favour and never watch season 2, it's really bad compared to 1. Full of annoying sex fetish characters that almost all die pointlessly.

within the first 20 seconds they’re showing child SA. the creepy stuff they continue to do using childlike characters is too weird for me. it’s a shame bcs the fantastical world of the show is really cool
It's definitely something you have to be willing to look past or accept if you want to get into the series. Thematically I appreciate how gross the series can be at times but the author definitely takes it too far a lot, it's actually toned down in the anime compared to the manga too lol.
I haven't watched season 2 because I'm afraid nothing could live up to season 1.... I did watch the movie and it was also great but I'm truly afraid to go further.
I think S2 is too high concept and the show becomes difficult to interpret

It would be a great anime if it wasn't weird about kids and was more straight forward rather than purple prosing basic plot elements until you can barely see the context anymore.
Kids going down into hell and not seeing it as such would be an interesting story but these aren't kids, they're weird fetish bait that's way more competent than they ought to be.

Highly disagree, the first season was good, movie was phenomenal, s3 was very underwhelming and many reviewers agree that it wasn't great
Well those reviewers can have thier opinions, doesn't change mine which is that s2 is peak made in abyss especially from ep 6 to 11
i've not seen a single person besides you say this season is worse than the previous season. idk how you could even think that considering the writing is much better and the arc overall is just a much better than the previous arcs. its only been getting better where early on and most of season 1 was just setup
