Nick Trott talks about the new 12C-based 650S supercar. The new model will sit above the 12C, gunning for the 458 Speciale, and features a new version of the M838T 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. Power has been increased from 616bhp to 641bhp, with torque now pegged at 500lb ft.

i think that mclaren dude used to work at autocar !
i think you're right!
YEAH!! he reviewed for sure the pagani Zonda cinque!! ant the R
Stuff like this.. 2 days after the release.. is why i come back to evo, but really we need more harry metcalfe
Metcalf is now working for Jaguar Land Rover, so I don't think we'll be seeing a lot more from him.
He doesn't work at evo anymore, sorry but we'll probably never see him again (at least as a journalist)
Why not make the back end sexy like the P1? they've made the front sexy why not at least change some looks of the back and not as the same as 12C...
'that McLaren guy' is a car reviewer on Autocar!
I thought that name was familiar!!
You guys at Evo did an excellent job and a heartfelt thanks to McLaren for making excellent cars.
Well done Nick, great video. I will look forward to your road test of this McLaren 650S given that you have been driving a 12C for quite some time your review should be very informative..
I love McLaren's approach to making super cars. They don't trade off refinement for performance.
They entirely traded refinement (styling wise) for performance with the P1.
Do you really think so TheFlyingPineapple ? I'm of the impression that nature is the best designer out there and the move to a more aerodynamic shape (wind tunneling tests, cadd simulations, etc) would seem to be in line with refinement from a styling perspective. Just a thought.
Life Long Learner
I see where you're coming from, but for me personally, the styling of the P1 is just a bit too OTT. This 650S strikes the perfect balance for me between flare and refinement in the McLaren range.
I agree completely with your sentiment in regards to the 650S, TheFlyingPineapple. It has the balance that makes it an everyday driver's car as well.
When I first saw this in profile, heart missed a beat. Stunning.
I like how the frontlights are the exact shape of the McLaren-logo.. nice touch :)
Face of the P1 + booty of 12C = 650S
It's like McLaren read my mind!
They really should have changed the rear to justify stating it's a new car.
jeebus2121 As much as I like the rear of the MP4-12C I have to agree with you...
I've been a skeptic for the last few days when looking at this car but this walk around really has helped. Don't really see it as a Speciale rival but more as a revised 12C (12C Mk.2?). Starting to like it a little bit more but I think the colours will play a large roll in how good this car will look.
I'm in love. Perfection on wheels. Great review evo 👍
So it's a 12C with a new front and 25 extra HP.
it's more than that, but why bother watching the video, eh?
Excellent video. Thank you very much.
Shame they didn't use P1's rear lights as well... P1 looks completely stunning from behind :)
"yup....yup...yup..."
+abdullah alfadhly Goddammit now I'm noticing that now
judging by how much quicker the standard 12c was over the 458, even before it's engine upgrade, i think the standard 12c is probably faster than a 458 speciale, let alone the 650s. respect where it is due to ferrari of course
Yes, but in all honesty 12C got lost in the shadow of 458. And Speciale gets 600hp out of 4,5L NA engine while Mclaren needs 2 big turbos to get 650hp out of 3,8L. That is just 0,7L smaller.
The raciness of Ferrari engines and the whole cars is on another level. And on this level speed alone is not enough, something Mclaren have a hard time with. These cars need to be a mix of flare, drama and performance. Mclaren is once again heavy on performance, even as they tried to add a bit more drama to 650S.
bezor Ta nothing was stopping ferrari using a turbo engine, arguably some of the most exciting cars of all time, the group b rally cars, group c monsters and the 80's f1 cars, were mostly turbo cars. The best feature on a ferrari has usually been it's engine, even awful ferrari's have usually had a good engine. but there's always more to a car than just the engine, without repeating old arguements, the 12c is a more complete car than the 458, and the standard 12c was 3 secs faster around top gear than the 458, before it's engine boost. my original statement was that saying the 650s was a competitor for the speciale was a bit of an underestimate, and that the 12c, with its advanced independent suspension and more bhp, would be faster than the speciale, we shall see anyway
bezor Ta "Yes, but in all honesty P1 got lost in the shadow of 458."
What?
"And Speciale gets 600hp out of 4,5L NA engine while Mclaren needs 2 big turbos to get 650hp out of 3,8L"
McLaren know a thing or two about engines. The reason they went forced induction is more to do with emissions than anything else. There are rumours that the 458's successor will employ turbocharging, like the new California.
What an awesome room!
Looks insanely good.
Good video but I would say to the interviewer is not to acknowledge every statement. Let the guest speak THEN you can ask questions otherwise its not professional and it can be annoying to the viewer. I used to work in sound production. That is all
yup
Thanks for pointing this out. Im an upcoming road tester/automotive journalist and i have recently noticed myself often acknowledging every statement during conversation. Will endeavour to keep this out of my career. Thanks again.
j600esh thanks for that. Also I will add, is to nod your head in acknowledgement and change facial expressions to suit the content. Obvious when you think about it but it's not a natural behaviour during a conversation but remember its an interview, not a conversation. Good luck with your career
McLaren's head of product? He was a journo up until recently.
yeah wtf
This one looks right, unlike the MP412C that looks like Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Now McLaren will be back in business with this one.
Absolutely wonderful to see Jamie Corstorphine at McLaren
What an improvement over the 12C!!
*Ordered* Hopefully I can fit.
Jamie Corstorphine is working for McLaren now?
I remember he used to be part of the Autocar test team.
Yep, Yea, Yea, Yep, Yea, OK, Yea...................................
It's so annoying..........
yep yea yep yea! hey can we get a yep yea yea yep remix?? yea NO
Those 650S badges on the skirts will add drag.. wtf mclaren I thought you were obsessed with perfection.
This is just like Aston that adds a spoiler to the db9 and calls it the Vanquish, or cuts it in half, adds some more car in between th two halves and calls it the Rapide. Bravo England.
How is Ferrari able to get out 600hp from a 4,5L NA engine in Speciale while everybody else needs 2 turbos to get those hp numbers? The 650S engine is only 0,7L smaller but needs 2 big turbos to get 650hp. The same with 458 and P12. The level of Ferrari engineering feels like on another level.
I guess they understood some of the criticism against P12 and tried to make 650S more engaging to drive and also give it some of the driftability the Speciale has.
agreed...also Porsche does the same thing...a lot of hp from na engines
The Ferrari engine is a peaky High HP but low torque engine. Adding turbos makes an auto more fun to drive on the road and creates abundance of torque at lower RPMs as well as High RPM. Ferrari 458 cannot compete with the torque of McClaren's twin turbos or any turbo supercars.
turbo engines are not easier to drive that's why most racing cars have NA engines, turbo engines can be unpredictable at times and less responsive due to the lower compression
bocajuniors55
Yes but these are supposed to be sports cars and not your daily driver that you want to leave in a gear as long as possible and ride on the torque. As Bart says you want to drive an engaging car. Sports car with high reving engine and quick responses, how a sports car suppose to be. And the torque numbers are not that low in the Ferrari.
yes it's alot harder that's why Honda which makes amazing NA engines are going to be making all their cars turbo charged but it's due to emission laws not because of power,i believe true car enthusiast prefer NA cars over turbo cars but the laws are changing the game
Oops. Maclaren takes the headlights from a P1 and puts them on a 12C. They've been doing so well recently, but this seems a blunder. Why not just make a 12C plus to go head to head with the 458 Speciale? Feels like a mistake to try and sell this is a 'new' model.
Did the mclaren guy used to do reviews for evo tv? i,m sure i,ve seen him clio 200cup and focus rs500 video.
So a bridge between the MP4-12C and the new P1..doesn't that just cut into sales for both?
Not really since McLaren stopped the limited production of the 12C and now only produces the 650S, which is a slightly improved 12C. All the constructed P1s have been sold and no more will be built. They were not in the same category anyway, the P1 costing more than $1million USD.
I love the front end, they just need to get rid of the plastic looking grill under the the headlights
Should be called MP4-12C + or something like that. Not a whole new name for something that is obviously just a rework of the 12c
Had to change the name because with the 12C McLaren would upgrade the older models to the new spec for free. It would cost McLaren too much to after the front conversion to all the old 12C owner, hence the new model name. At least thats my logic.
That's like saying a Camry SE isn't a Camry because the front is different and has more bells and whistles. That's an MP4-12c, anyone that sees it sees an MP4-12c albeit with a face lift.
Bart Vandenhaute most manufacturers these days try to have family resemblence, also if you had a P1 I doubt you'd be posting shit on youtube :P
Bart Vandenhaute
You're not buying a P1 just because it looks epic but because it is a monster. Btw the back of the P1 looks 10 times more epic.
Bart Vandenhaute
Flair and drama has never been Mclaren's strong side. A super car for the road should always be a perfect mix of flair, drama and performance. Mclaren is always heavy on the performance side but lacks in the other areas. Ferrari on the other hand is the master of making desirable cars. See how P12 disappears in the shadow of 458. Look how F40 is still an icon while nobody even mention Porsche 959.
In the new race for best super car Porsche has gone mad again with tech in 918, Mclaren wind tunnel crazy with P1, just look at that huge wing and diffuser in the back, it looks more like a C-class race car. But Ferrari once again went for the perfect mix.
It sounds definetely more "evo" ;-)
Thanks!
If i were P1 owners I would be mad that they made a cheap look like lil brother of an icon and if I were 12c owners I would be mad cause they didnt do this from the start. LOL.
If I were a P1 owner I wouldn't give a fuck because I'm a fuckin' billionaire who just got an extremely rare hypercar added to my collection and I'm ballin' like crazy all day every day so a cheaper McLaren having a face that resembles that of my car would be the very least of my concerns. Hell, I'd probably pick one up because why not.
ruskeee...hope you not mad at me cause i dont give a fuck you turd it was a joke.
I think I'll wait to see and hear it in motion before I pass judgement.
Basically this is upgraded package of the mp4-12c which they call new model.
Hey! Is that Jamie Corstorphine from Autocar? It's been a long time I haven't seen him.
I was wondering where he went. That's an appreciable career advancement.
jeebus2121 I was too. Autocar was more entertaining when Vicky and Jamie were there. Now I only see Steve. Anyway congratulations for his new career.
Thanatip Vachiraprakarnsakul There's another guy from Autocar who sort of disappeared. Really mild-mannered, beard and glasses, and a pretty keen driver. Haven't seen him on any reviews (for any magazines) in nearly two years.
jeebus2121 I think that's Matt Prior. I still see him writing some articles on Autocar. As I remember last time I saw him, he wrote about Alfa Romeo 4c. But not anymore on video.
Thanatip Vachiraprakarnsakul Yep, that's him. I knew he was a 'Matt' but not the last name.
But, why isn't this called 12C s2? I'm not sure the porsche route of having 20 different and yet same cars is the right way for McLaren. They'll release a new car, which will be an old one with 20hp+ and new splitter, every year?
My interpretation = Probably because the 12C is so far a failure, costs too much, had some major problems that need fixing, and this is their strategy for phasing it out. (see = doors, brakes, electrical problems, etc)
I haven't even finished watching the video yet, but the awkwardness of the very first question when asked to explain the existence of the 650s suggested to me that this is basically "12C replacement = fixed, and priced properly"
***** My guess is they might drop it after introducing a cheaper replacement for it next year.
I wonder what's next for McLaren. I wonder if they'll bridge the performance gap between the 650s and P1 or if they'll bridge the gap between the new entry McLaren and the 12c
If the back end looked more like the P1 and less like the 12C... It would be perfect.
P1 front and mp4 rear?
I don't think they can really call it a new car if the rear is exactly the same as the 12c, new bumper notwithstanding. And the front looks like a P1, even if it is actually different. Having said that, I think this is still a dream car. The lighting in this room is sublime, on the plus side.
great stuff
Well done guys!
McLaren should hire Nick as their new PR Executive. Although maybe they already have.
Can't watch the rest of this video. Why were the yups not edited out????
Now I have seen a proper driving review it appears that it is indeed a complete departure from the 12c and much better to boot. So much so that they are apparently not making the 12c at the moment.
Jamie was from Autocar! How did he end up at McLaren?
They should have changed the rear of the car. Otherwise, I think it's kinda cool
That 40% more downforce is where it probably gets it's middle 12C and P1 performance from, otherwise it would just be a bit faster 12C with a couple of more HP.
To be honest, I don't buy the 40% increase in downforce, at all. If it's so darn easy, why not engineer the 12C that way in the first place? A lot of marketing bollocks, imo.
But I've got to hand it to McLaren. Introducing a mid-cycle refresh without actually replacing the old car. That's bloody genius.
bmwe92m you don't understand Business
Love the P1, like the 12C. The 650S is clearly a mix of both, but not in a good way.
Why oh why didn't McLaren do a proper clean sheet design rather than the obvious P1 front end on a 12C?
650 S has the similar exterior of 12C just the front bumper has more aerodynamic body
didn't that McLaren bloke use to work for autocar magazine? maybe another publication
i thought that as soon as i heard his voice, you never know they may be twins
Just did a little Google and yes it is the former journalist from Autocar
Gadgetlava thought he looked familiar
Yup!
Looks nice
Same thinking of Apple. The 12c is the iPhone 5, the 650s is the iPhone 5s. From the 5 to the 5s there are only minimal speed improvements, and just small estethic details have been changed. Same with these two supercar. I'd take the 12c, this p1 front end doesn't fit the 12c tail at all.
who would have thought that an automotive journalist from autocar will be head of product at mclaren one day! well done
The "Yep"s in this video are very distracting. Nice looking car though.
Does anyone know if they changed the shitty paddle shift 'klick' noise?? From a computer mouse noise to something better?
Why the hell TH-cam is showing me this video in 2022 ? Anyway, I love it
Front end of a P1 and the rear end of an MP4-12c
Looks like a mix of 12c n p1
This guy says "yep" like 9000 times!
yep
I think the front looks alright, but imo the rear design of the car doesn't suit the front which spoils/ unbalances the overall look.
I'm not alone in saying that he should stop saying "YEAH" every single time.
yep
looks like McLaren have realised their Porsche Cayman
beautiful car certainly...but the styling isn't somehow nearly as dramatic as the MP4 12C or the P1...I know it's supposed to be somewhere in the middle, but this middle seems average, and not new. Perhaps its the paintwork. most show models are a little louder?
So this 'new' car which only has an extra 25hp is supposed to slot in the gap between the 12C and P1. By my calculations it means McLaren can built another 10 'new' cars to slot in the gap between the 650S and P1!
This Mclaren guy used to work in EVO right?
thats a cool room
So what will justify the way higher price tag than that of the mp4-12c. Cause I dont see it. I would rather just buy a 12c and mildy tune it.
you would probably have to drive both and figure that out, the difference is big enough it appears
one thing a find weak in terms of variety about Mclaren cars is that, on all the new cars the center console control and buttons are the same on all three of them. they couldn't change it up just a little bit?.... the only option in the cockpit is the upholstery, and i think that the P1 get better bucket seats. so come on Mclaren, ones your inside the only thing that lets you know that your in a deferent car is the HP. but i love Mclaren's designs.
when your paying that much for a car. you want the Mclaren identity. Nobody that buys this or the MP4, or the P1, would ask for a different dash. its beautiful and unique.
yeah your kind of right, but! you cant see the our side wen ur in the car to have just a little bit of separation on the cockpit it's not to much to ask when ur spending this kind of money. and y the P1 if the 12c or 650S look the same on the inside. unless u want to kill ur car on a everyday basis by taking it to a track i don't see y u would need more then 650HP on a suburban or city road.
12c at the back p1 at the front
Not a fan of those skinny wheels, they don't fit the style of the car at all.
meh.......i'm gonna go back to the P1 video.
A facelift 12c....cmon McLaren wtf?!!!!
looks really good but rather like the back of a 12c mushed into the front of a p1
Yup
"Yeah... Yeah... Yeah... Yup... Yeah... Yeah... Yeah..."
This is all i heard through the whole video. The ginger saying this the while time.
You don't need to say "yea" or "yup" every 3 seconds man! So annoying!!
shit presenters with a piss poor script!
Didnt he used to work for motor trend or someone else or was it evo?
Jamie Corstorphine worked for Autocar
I think it will look nice in black with some other wheels! But like this hmmm...
Why is this 100k more than the 12C?
Because they can?
Yep yepyeah yep yep yesh yepyep yes yep yep yeah yeah yeah yep............................................
Inspired journalism.
At least add some emotion to the car naming scheme.
Agree with Arvin, great front some real character/ McLaren DNA beginning to take form but does not really "fit" the rear. Liked the interview, but it feels a little rehearsed/artificial.
The Shoes on Jamie are gobbsmacking :)))
458 Speciale rival, ferrari FF, Avendetor price. But wait for the Lamborghini Huracan. V10 is a beast
I like it
Yep.
I think car looks pretty actually.
Omg that guy used to review cars!! :o
Very weird watching Autocar explain this car to evo! ;-)
"Yeah." "Yep."
From certain angles this car looks exactly like the 12c.
Yup machine
