      The series was supposed to be about John Kelly. When Caruso left, they had to take a whole different track. It became the redemption of Andy.

    Notice how Andy moves closer behind his desk, as each person comes to say goodbight. He's blown away by the reapect Baldwin shows him. He's finally behind his desk. He looks at the files and sighs. Until Clark comes in. The last member of the squad. Calls him Boss. He sits at his desk and opens the files. Beautiful. I've always said there'd be no Tony Soprano without Andy Sipowicz. I stand by that.

      Gotta agree completely the changes personally and professionally that character went through over 12 seasons is unprecedented in tv or film. Don’t think any other character ever created had that sort of arc and Dennis Franz was the perfect actor to fill those shoes. I’ve heard people say that Tony Soprano and Walter White among other modern anti hero characters have Andy Sipowicz and NYPD Blue to thank for setting the bar. Gotta say it’s hard to disagree with that statement.

    I like the ending with Andy at his desk as the camera gets an overview of the bullpen, including the fish tank in view. I get why John had to be the last one to talk with him as those two had built a strong relationship as partners, friends, and mentor/mentoree over the years too. I wish they would've made it work with Charlotte Ross to make a cameo as Connie in this episode too. I read somewhere the producers wanted her back, but her ex-husband and manager at the time said they all were on vacation around the time of filming, so I guess that couldn't have happened. For me, it would've been great to see Connie pull a surprise visit to Andy during the episode. At least Steven Bochco had a plan to end the show at 12 seasons. And not go on past its prime; it's better to stay on top. Thanks again for posting!!!

      Not only the show but Dennis Franz himself. This is the last scene (not counting award appearences and interviews of course lol) that Franz appears in television or media as he has since more or less retired from acting. Can't say that last scene of him in the darkness of the night at the 15th precinct was a good way to end the show. If only they could have got some sort of cameo with Charlotte Ross and even David Caruso of some form or fashion. Dennis Franz also learned to know when to go out on top as far as his acting career has gone.

    • @bredrew1990

      @@Bull1908 Other than appearing at a few award shows. One with Jimmy Smitts I believe. He has retired and is enjoying time with his family. The thing I read he wasn't going to retire after the show ended. But he ultimately did. I wish they would've gotten Charlotte Ross to make some sort of cameo too. Whether it was Andy talking to Connie on the phone. Or have her come with baby Matt to visit Andy at the 15th for a few minutes would've sufficed too. But 12 years is going out on top to me.

      I agree the Connie character should have been included. I wouldn't have minded Fancy putting an appearance in as well. Nor would I have minded flashback moments of other characters going through Andy's mind during the course of the final episode, which might have worked better as a two parter. That being said, I was still satisfied the way they ended this show's 12-year run. Andy's character growth from beginning to end was one of the most fascinating ever produced by network television.

    I just finished the series today after not being allowed to watch it as a kid when it was on TV. Really loved the entirety of this scene as it showed Andy had what it took to be in charge of the squad and put the cases and the team ahead of the political interests from his superiors.
    Also liked how he ended up the last man standing from the first season and inherited a young squad with Baldwin and Clark Jr. as the lead detectives, the girls as the backup and the rooks to be molded by his teachings and him instilling confidence in them.
    Definitely the greatest police drama to ever grace the TV screen. The Shield, Law and Order, The Mentalist, Bones and Criminal Minds have been great, but after plowing through this series I understand why it's the standard.

    This was a fantastic ending, but I think I would also have liked to see this happen at the end of season 11, or at least earlier in season 12. Then the dynamic of this episode (i.e. Andy wondering if he has what it takes, bumping up against the brass, etc…) could’ve been drawn out over a number of episodes. It also could’ve made the story with Clark’s spiral more interesting if Andy had to deal with it as a friend and a boss, rather than a partner, since he’s already kinda done that with Danny. And I think it would’ve made it even more satisfying when he found his footing in the job. I’m certainly not disappointed with the finale, but I think I would’ve just liked to see Andy in command more than we got to.

    “How you feelin’ Lt.?” // “Not bad. How YOU feelin’?”
    I rewatched this scene several times... top five of the series; a GREAT ending to a strong final season. And it’s boosted by the fact that it parallels an earlier scene where John kinda tried to cover for the new guys. They voiced their concerns (and their screw up), which got the others to question things, and here Andy not ONCE throws ANYONE under the bus even though he didn’t seem to have doubts earlier. He took full responsibility LIKE A BOSS, and in that moment in the eyes of his squad he goes from their friend to their Sergeant. And to have Bale there to witness that level of integrity, to validate his recommendation, was icing on the cake.
    I do think they rushed the Bale/Sipowicz arc of mutual respect due to this being the show’s final season. Like, it wasn’t THAT long ago he was hellbent on getting Andy fired, and he goes from that to encouraging him to move up in rank. I get that Andy kept his secret, but I do wish they had one more season to make it seem more organic. THEY needed one of those that “let’s grab some ribs” and/or “fight in the locker room to vent” scenes of mutual understanding that he had with Fancy. 😄 Still though, they did the best arc justification with the time they had left.
    Minor note though, on an outstanding final season ☺️👍🏽👍🏽

    • @williamanthony9090
      @williamanthony9090 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree they kind of rushed the interaction between Bale and Sipowicz that led to Bale recommending him for squad commander. There was the whole thing about Bale encouraging him concerning the sargent's exam, but more time would have played out a little better. I won't say the show became stale as it approached Season 12, but it did become rather comfortable. That final season put a spark back into it with the whole Andy/Bale storyline.

I remember at the time Steven Bochco being asked how they were gonna end it and he basically said they didn’t want any flashy finales or anything and wanted it to be essentially business as usual at the 15th cause the one constant through out 12 seasons and characters coming and going from the show and dying was that despite all of that life still marches on.
