I believe Gilels was truly the most musical and best pianist. His interpretations are just perfect and the tempi are just right!!!

He was truly wonderful, but I don't think you can say anyone is the best. There are many others who are as great as Gilels in their own way.

My favorite Beethoven piano sonata. This work has it all: the distance and coming together of the bass and treble, the fuga, trill (that typifies the late sonatas), variations on a theme, ... and the third movement is one of the most beautiful pieces in piano compositions. The theme of the third movement is almost like a chorale of Bach.

I feel so much love in this interpretation, and a little bit of sadness. It's nice to see a different tempo, slower than the others. He gave me another vision of this sonata, it's pure love!!!

This is a sonata of the 'third period' of Beethoven - one of the most complex. Rendering it properly is a challenge . Gilels offers us an awe some recording. He underlines the overall architecture of the sonata while rendering all its details.

Emil Gilels is certainly one of my all time favorite concert pianist and interpreters of Beethoven piano sonata and concerto music. He ranked along side Horowitz, Richter, Rubinstein, Gould, Schnabels, Bachouse and many other 20th Century masters.

What a top notch rendition! Imagination at its highest and as deeply soulful as it gets. To me, Gieles was the titan of the keyboard. Technique, imagination, spiritual as it gets. Sorry to say that I hear Richter plays but not touched much. SORRY. But hear Gieles's Beethoven, Mozart, Scalatti, Liszt, Russian repertoire needless to say. You are in awe for his impeccable playing and yet, being touched deeply.

More convincing than Richter and almost as wonderful as Arrau. Pure magic. The work is among the greatest things ever written
for keyboard. I wonder how these great men managed to do this in the hell of the Soviet Union. Gilels was spied on by his brother in law, Kogan, who was blackmailed by the KGB. Charming! When you go to Moscow, the terror is still there, somewhat a little subdued....

In its own modest way -- his awe of Beethoven informs every moment -- it might be one of the triumphs of the pianistic repertoire. The dynamic modelling of the shape of the second variation, two big curves, is a simple enough idea, but how often have we heard it?

+verslaflamme I knew it was the greatest performance of 109 I'd ever heard after the second note - he leans slightly on the first sixteenth note, setting up a subtle conflict that is answered by the ecstatic piercing high register of the recap and confirmed by the final chord, separated from the rest of the sonata with a complete break. For me what might be the truly extraordinary thing here is the second variation: a thoroughly modernist take (presaging the rhythmic ambiguity of Brahms and the pointillism of Webern and Boulez) without the pretense, not to say posturing, of certain other (admirable) pianists whose names I'll refrain from mentioning. It is perfect, Michelangeli-perfect, but with soul. That might not be the worst way to describe Gilels: a Michelangeli with emotion.

You can´t play this sonata only for the beauty of sound. Gilels´ recital therefore lacks the typical tension and spirit of the composer Beethoven, which is shown e.g. by Solomon, Serkin and Richter.
