I discovered this movie during a low phase of my life. The scenes with hanging out at his mentor became my favorite parts. They gave me chill and recovery. It felt somehow similar to my current state of mind trying to solve a problematic matter.
I've watched this movie so many times since I was a youth. Now that I am a professional mathematician, I feel like I know Sol, and he's been there all along.
understanding how music works and is made is still not enough for one to begin to make beautiful music. i'm guessing a great mathematician is like that.
As a film, PI is very well constructed. It's visually very interesting. You could watch this with the sound turned off and still enjoy just the visual aspect. The music is very atmospheric & complements the visuals well. It's an example of a film made by someone with a great visual & atmospheric sense. As regards the story, it's about one person (Max) seeking something mysterious, patterns in PI. It has nothing to do with maths. You won't learn anything about PI or maths by watching it. It's not a film about maths. But it is a film for those who enjoy good visual storytelling & atmosphere.
@The Monarch what are you trying to say? That Phi, the Golden Ratio, means nothing? It all over in nature! You can tell where a leaf will grow on a plant, where seeds will fall, the pattern of the sunflower seeds in the sunflower, the way a pine cone is constructed! It’s all about nature...should’ve been entitled Phi, imho.
@@cynthiaennis3107 The concept of the Golden Ratio is addressed obliquely by the Saul character. "When your mind becomes obsessed with anything -you will filter everything else out and find it everywhere." Many other aesthetically pleasant ratios can be found in the same forms in nature but because this one is the GOLDEN ratio, all of the others are filtered away like noise. Its a natural human tendency to obsess and distort our own reality in this exact way. "Without scientific rigour, you are no longer a mathematician, you're a numerologist." The Golden Ratio -is numerology. It's a kind of conspiracy theory like math meme. When @The Monarch above says '"and lets not forget, all the bullshit the movie uses to paint its story, ALSO has grown from people using mathematics:)" I think he means that numerology, astrology, etc -most esoteric or magic disciplines were the first steps toward our modern scientific disciplines. The major dividing line between something that is at best an 'esoteric thought technology' and a practical, useful scientific discipline, is exactly this understanding of how pattern recognition and obsession construct our world and can drive us to madness. Lets not forget also -this is a movie. Who's to say that toward the end of the film Max has not lost his mind? The films plot details Max's descent into insanity and isolation -while its major theme is the proximity of genius to madness. In the third act we are seeing Max's desire for a structured ordered universe bound by spirals etc -come true. He has stepped into his own delusion. And the delusion is so intoxicating that it has been convincing people for a very long time. Spirals in nature, numerology, kabala etc. I don't mean to devalue these things really. I wouldnt call them bullshit like @The Monarch. I think there is a lot to be derived creatively and artistically from a swan dive into these ancient insanities. They are a powerful kind of poetry -but they are not science. And both disciplines are damaged by the conflation.
@@cynthiaennis3107 igonring numerology, afaik, maths the way we know them is literally, mathmatically not the end-all-be-all, david hilbert once said that math was complete, consistent and decidable, and proudly declared it in front of a considerable audience at a conference. turns out he was wrong, on all 3 fronts, it was actually disproven even before he got to do the conference. the consequences of him being, well, wrong, essentially spawned the modern era, alan turing made the modern computer trying to disprove one of hilbert's points, the device you're typing on right now literally exists due to math being anything but complete, consistent and decidable. this does not mean math is worthless, it just means that we way we currently interpret numbers is not gonna tell us the truth of everything, hell, there's even chances that numbers are just that, interpretations of real, chaotic and unpredictable phenomena, which extends to numerology, which is regarded as a pseudoscience, anyways.
He also wanted to blow a guy and his family in front of United Nations building but instead received a bullet from political prisoner from banana boat.
Sol encourages Max to stop thinking and use his intuition while playing go and yet he chastises Max for treading off the path of scientific rigour into numerology. Sol is able to censure Max because Sol's data set is the go game he plays with Max which is observable and the styles and methods of play are finite and limited of which Max is aware, while Max's data set is the entire universe including the unoberservable variables (similar to how Lenny's was the Torah). Thus Max is convinced by his research because half of his data set is observable and the rest is a simple leap into the unknown or what Sol considers "hog wash". Great film though. Only when he appears in front of a rabbi does Max hit the wall, so to speak, in terms of enlightenment as Sol knew in calling Max "Icarus". The only "step" left for Max is a lobotomy. Then at the end he is at peace realising that he himself is a piece in the game and not outside nor over and above. It's like Spinoza wrote the script and Leibniz directed it.
@The Monarch I didn't get that at all from the movie, although I'll grant it's not the easiest movie to understand. Yes, Sol is protecting Max, but only because of his own experience, not because the answer is not "meant" for humans to have, which implies some kind of higher or mystic source beyond man. Sol is only trying to get through to Max, showing him that any breakthroughs will never come without balance, which Max was lacking. As to Max's choice of lobotomizing himself, I think it had more to do with Max's desire to rid himself of the pain he was increasingly experiencing, rather than ridding himself of "forbidden" knowledge. Any knowledge may be dangerous if not used properly, but to imply some knowledge as forbidden harks back to the religious hogwash that Sol referred to.
@@graytonw5238 I must disagree. Sol lies to Max because Sol was trying to get at the same answer Max is looking for but at some point he had to pull himself out of insanity and stop. Sol knows Max will never stop so he tries to redirect Max with a lie to stop him from going insane. This is evident when Sol returns to the problem and it causes him to die of a stroke, having organized the go board into a golden spiral just before his death. Even with all the experience and knowledge Sol has, the temptation to solve the problem was too great and it was inevitable that he would return/relapse. Max did perform the lobotomy because he wanted the pain to stop, but the pain gets increasingly worse throughout the movie as Max gets closer to the answer, suggesting an association between pain and Max's knowledge. This is supported by Max's encounter with the Rabbi where Max is told he's not pure enough and that's why the knowledge is eating him from the inside. The movie is a series of interconnected symbols, there are many facets of meaning to it.
@Emrullah Değer I'd say PI can be described as a film where one fights himself and tries to overcome his limitations. Considering the previous statement there are two gems from him: The Fountain; Requiem for a Dream
@rhodamineThe film sets (specifically Max's apartment) were heavily influenced by Terry Gilliam's famous Dystopian, Bureaucratic, Black Comedy film: "Brazil".

Computers have a lot of problems playing go because they rely completely on logic to play the game, and either have to take 6 hours to compute all possible moves or if they move faster they must severely sacrifice their decision-making ability and their moves are suboptimal. If go’s “gameplay by intuition” was a myth then computers wouldn’t encounter these problems, especially to this degree.
