8 years later, and still the only before/after comp/drive demo that dimes the compression on the compression pedal so you can actually hear the difference, 👍🏻👍🏻

I've turned into a "compressor after OD" guy but as you said yourself, I never run it at full compression. You finally got there in the video about 2/3 through. I run the blend below 12 o'clock to allow the dynamics of my ODs to come through as they should. But this method allows me to adjust for inconsistencies in output level between my ODs, yet still getting the tone I need from each of them. I still have dynamics available through the guitar volume control... It's a way to "normalize" my output to some extent, to cover up for my inability to otherwise control my OD pedals.

I feel the compressor sound much better after the dirt, if it's set up correctly. I'd rather hit my dirt pedal with direct signal to make sure all the harmonic overtones are intact, and also so I can have better cleanup with my volume control.

I also completely agree, especially with higher gain dirt pedals. Mine is a "Marshall-in-a-box" type distortion from another boutique pedals builder ;) and it's very dynamic end even "chewy". I wouldn't want to mess up these dynamics with a comp before.
The comp would definitely need to be set up different depending if it's before or after the dirt box of course.

    • @StephaneBergeronPixelyzed
      @StephaneBergeronPixelyzed 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

But for sustaining leads, it makes sense to have the comp before. I'm getting a switcher soon so I can change the order of effects per preset so, best of both worlds ;)

But the compressor is either adjusted for your distorted tones, or your clean tones, but not both. Compressors for clean make clean more palatable and enjoyable.

In my experience, having compression before the OD takes the touch-response of the gain stage(s) and so it makes it harder to change tone with changes in playing dynamics. If I put the compression after, and run the mix at 50-80%, I get focused OD when I dig in but more open open chords when playing lightly. Or, when using my volume knob, I can roll off gain without rolling off too much volume. I this only works with comps that allow parallel usage (i.e. have a mix control) to allow the OD to "breathe" around the compression and not be a tone-suck. Also, running it after OD also requires a noise gate to prevent insanity.

Yes, spot on. Thats what i thought as well.

  • @njslim
    @njslim 8 ปีที่แล้ว +56

Nice presentation. One small thing ... if you're using the compressor after an overdrive/distortion pedal, it's probably good to either adjust the threshold of the comp or set the OD closer to unity gain. Most of the negative effects of the demo were because you were kicking the crap out of the comp. Also, the best thing about the after position is what happens with long sustained notes... they bloom. Sonny Landreth's tone on "Native Stepson" is a great example of the after position.
Otherwise ... nice job. BTW, I generally use mine before. :-)

The way I have come to understand this is that the compressor should be the first effect pedal closest to your guitar. The idea is that you want the notes / signal from the guitar to be compressed not the sound of an O/D pedal or what have you to be compressed.

I'm experimenting with compressor placement right now, and I'm now at the stage of using it after my preamp even. I run a noise gate with a loop that includes my preamp. So, it's ODs -> preamp -> compressor -> gate -> time-based effects -> power amp. Guitar triggers the gate of course. I'm trying to knock down that initial transient to get a Robben Ford Dumble tone. I have a number of Dumblesque pedals and none of them sound correct to my ears. As for noise increase, maybe it's the compressor (Cali 76), maybe it's the settings, but noise doesn't seem to be a big issue, even with the gate off. Still not there, but that's the fun in experimentation.
Great video as always, Mr. Wampler.

In your video, with your pedals it sounds better before. But for me (being a high gain extreme metal player) the compressor benefits more when placed after the distortion pedal, it just needs to have the makeup gain/level turned up more than when placed before and delivers way more sustain. Before the distortion having an equalizer pedal that enhances whatever frequencies your pickups lack will improve the overall sound coming out of the chain. EQ ~> DIST ~> COMP is what works best for me as a metal player.

  • @SixStringGrace

If you set up the compressor the way you would in a studio, after the drives, you can get dynamics out of your drive pedals, but then a consistently even sound going into your modulation/delays. Turn the sustain way down, the blend to a little under half, and you're off to a good start!

If you play in a house with people that hate you when you hurt their ears it's great to have the compressor after the OD so you can set the volume at a reasonable level using the compressor volume knob and still retain most of the crunchiness. Also works the other way around and boosts a clean signal nicely with the turn of that same volume knob if you need a volume boost without a using gain. So if you need a dirty sound at bedroom volume put comp after OD and turn the volume knob down. Your guitar volume will then increase/decrease drive but not volume.

I use compression for clean or some lead lines at times, though never really liked it with overdriven chord work. I don't have an ego, however, I like the blend knob idea like a sound engineer does with a desk. I also love the blend knob because in _the right spot_ you get the comps volume raise for the quiet passages but when you whack the strings the unaffected signal takes over and kinda jumps over the squash. I actually just solved a problem with my drive volume by putting the comp after OD. Instead of having to fuss with the OD volume knob, the comp's volume know acts basically as a master volume. No matter what I have my OD volume set at (except if at full down), its volume gets compressed to that point set by the comp.

I used it before overdrives but recently I started using it after. I use light amount of compression. I like what it does to the tone but not what it does to the dynamics. I use my amp clean because at the volumes I play it doesn’t get dirty. So I noticed I could have what I like on compressor pedals and get rid of what I don’t like placing the pedal after. My overdrives respond exactly how I want to my pick attack and vol pot and things get kind of leveled after that dynamic thing happens between guitar and overdrives and modulation effects receive the impact of what the compressor does. I love a chorus with compressor. If you use extreme settings on the compressor you may not like it after but how I use it is a win win for me after.

I learned for myself that I'd better have some soft OD (like 808 but less mid freq boost) before my main distortion, and I'd put compressor after distortion stage.

I have mine early on in my signal chain. Though I thought
I was wrong in doing it that way because whenever you see a multi effects unit (especially the older ones) they always put the compressor AFTER the gain stage. I'm a fan of all modulation, compression and filter type(Wah) or auto Wah all going before the gain stages then to delay and reverb.

I usually go OD>Comp>Dirt, but I may be using my OD differently than you.
I'm running a solid state amp (Roland JC), the OD is there for the hi-pass (to keep low frequencies from being compressed) and a little gain to add just a little chime to my cleans (not boosting the signal or cranking the gain). The second dirt box is often a Big Muff, which does a lot of compression, so the OD is doing the same thing there. Usually the Comp and Dirt 2 wouldn't be on at the same time.

  • @maxonmendel5757

I like compression before my soft clipping, because it boosts the signal and helps push that drive a little harder and warm it up. But I put compression after hard clipping stuff because I like the way it cleans up the signal (and if I ran a compressor before it would push it into out of control territory)
I'm a bassist, so I need really tight crunch regardless of how much crunch it is. I can't have any extra noise or anything.
So right now I run my Shockwave into a SpectraComp into a MojoMojo, and when I get a big muff I'll put it where the Shockwave is.

Wanting to play like my heroes Yngwie, John Norum, Gary Moore (80s style) etc. I used the BP-10 as an overdrive to push my 10W Park amp, obviously not knowing what a compressor was supposed to do :) Later I used it with Marshalls and my Fender Roc Pro. Loads of hiss but the sound was and sustain was amazing.

I have my compression pedal in the loop for several reasons and it's not going anywhere. It's probably blasphemy to say that but if you heard my set up youd agree it's right where it belongs. My tube choice an pickup choice has kept the noise to a minimum so having the comp later in the chain doesn't add noise, well a tiny bit but no more than when it was first in the chain. Long story short I've set up all my guitars to use higher output humbuckers with inner/outer split options. And having my comp in the loop means the comp won't distort as quickly(so it has more headroom) so it still sounds great with higher output pups. And it simulates tube sag when I'm playing quieter(it's a marshall DSL100HR so its a 100w head). Also one of my homeade pedals is a treble booster I built but it was always fighting the comp for first in the chain and sucking highs cause that was two true bypass pedals before the first buffered pedal and the treble booster as you know can't have a buffer before it. Now that my comp is in the loop it's more useable in my set up and it's not jockying for position with my other front of amp pedals. I was so happy when I figured out how well it worked there. I don't buck tradition often cause most of the time there's good reason for most players to do things a certain way but this was a great example of how there are sometimes exceptions.

    • @michaelinglis8516

I do too. It gives the compression more headroom for cleans and simulates tube sag at lower volumes. I've selected tubes for low noise and have quieter pickups even though they are higher output so having my comp in the loop is perfect. Most guys with single coils would find that a comp in the loop raises the noise floor too much but in the right set up a comp in the loop is absolutly perfect.

I'm in the "less is more" camp. I get why such high settings were used for the demo. I wouldn't be using as high of compression. I use it before dirt. Many OD pedals inherently add compression already. A light comp before dirt can enhance your OD's natural comp without muddying up the tone. Using after with such high settings, in my opinion, sounded like it was kidnapped, forced in the trunk of a car, and screaming to get out. I'll have to experiment to see how lighter settings sound after dirt myself. I may or may not hear a significant difference but am curiouser nonetheless. This demo was very interesting yet I feel somewhat flawed because lighter settings weren't demonstrated for those of us in the "less is more" camp. But wasn't that the purpose? To get us to try different things? Thanks Brian for being you!

  • @mattg082

Yeah gainstage OD can get tricky. I’m a studio guy. So my mic chain always has an API/Neve followed by a light utility compressor like a DBX 160. It really evens things out and makes life easier.
I’m considering an always on boost type for my low gain or a comp. Issue is stacking pedals! As when I go to my base OD it’s too low. So volume pedal after OD, Compressor or Boost I’m guessing. Working hard to get to unity gain and it works when not staking, or using a preamp at the end stage mostly on. But still trying to nail it!
I find with tube amps it’s a bit easier, than running my DI amp pedals.

Given that the actual signal from guitar pickups is fairly weak, anything that adds a bit of muscle will make any effect work and sound better. The proper setting of a compressor to your taste will make lots of nice things happen such as lots of sustain even without any effects and without having to open up your amp until the walls melt.

I grabbed an ego a while back, but haven't had a chance to use it a lot. Love the sound! I've been running it out front, and I think that's where it's gonna stay. I'm not big on "subtle" effects and 5 knobs is one less than my amp. I'll be building a bigger board in a bit, and this kinda solidifies what I thought about keeping it out front. I doubt it will be on same time as the Ge Fuzz Face, but who knows? Thoughts on that? I wish I could just go out and try it, but kids and dogs are gonna stop that today, then I'm headed out to sea for a while, where I'll try to ballpark a design for my new board (with cutout pieces of paper like a puzzle) so I can be ready to run the saw when I get home. Mixing and matching the order of comp, phaser, vibe, Fuzz, treble booster, wah, flanger, tremolo, chorus, delay and looped (followed by a looper) is gonna be a task. I'll probably have a boost in there somewhere, probably right before the looper. Phaser, flanger and chorus are only used either clean or a little gritty, no real dirt. Basically a board that will go from classic country to bluesrock, with a strong Americana alt-country focus. A board for everything. Fun fun, weighs a ton!

After. I was putting together my first board yesterday (been playing DI into Logic for years). Lately I've been going DI, but through outboard gear. Preamp to EQ to tube compressor, 1176, distressors, etc. So I've been hitting with 1 or 2 analog compressors before getting into the DAW. So when I set my board up, I had compressor to 808 to distortion to delay to reverb to amp. But it just wasn't working right. I played around and found that putting the compressor at the end of the chain worked best. It will hit the mic which will go through preamp and compressors anyway, so not sure if the comp pedal is needed in the studio setting.

I use from-scratch DIY clones I built based on the gray 250 OD and script Dyna Comp. I've had a love/hate relationship using a comp at all. I have a MXR Custom Comp too but like my script clone slightly better. Anyways I have my script comp before my overdrive now and loving it. My only concern is losing pick dynamics but at least I can toggle the comp off if I want to express with that. I didn't like the "after" sound in your demo and because you have to turn up the level so going to be more noise which is bad. Like you I think the comp is better before an overdrive but everyone has there tastes and preferences. I'm kinda boosting my overdrive a bit with the comp before if you like that effect.

So a subtle comp on the dry signal blends the wet & dry signal mix perfectly. While preserving the grit & snarl of the dirt as naturally compressed by the circuit. 🤌 👍 🤩
