I have to say as someone who met you in 2006 back in the early days, you come across just as down to earth now and personable as when you were smoking out S14s and R32s.
As someone who does track setup for a living, thank you for showing everything. I can't believe how many shops leave out the leveling of the plates! And to anyone commenting about pre-load, stop. It doesn't change anything.
@@Russell_and_Rosko What engine combo that is comprable to s65 and DCT that is lighter in your opinion? I suppose Phil's bigger fuel tank doesn't help in the weight dept. either.
👍 It's very good on track. It's about 100kg heavier than I thought it would be when starting the build, but it drives so well with all of the suspension theory I threw at it.
Fck I wasn’t trying to be overly critical. I was pointing out that the numbers aren’t “so good” as the op was saying. I don’t doubt the car, just the overly enthusiastic original comment suggesting 1400 kgs is light. 🤐
@@Russell_and_Rosko Sorry I wasn't trying to be negative about your comment. I was just curious to your opinion. As much as i like e30's i don't really know how much they really weigh with an M20, M50, S52 or the like.
Corner wieghting is a very fine art. Adjusting Corners is really just the fine tune. The real key is to place the wieght where its best whilst building the car. And thats never easy. BUT good results on track when you can master these tricks. Love the vids guys, Keep em coming.
Hey Phil could you do a video rundown of the DCT and DCT controller, i thought about using it for project of mine with the HTG controller but there is not much out there about this stuff. I think it could be a interesting video, because DCT swaps could be the big new thing in the engine swap world.
Tip! Ad some slippery material like baking paper between the tires and weight scales and rub the car up'n down some times and you will se the weight move around a bit. As the lift won't go down 100% flat against scales the and the wheels move in'n out a bit when lowering it might be faulty corner weight. Love your videos!
Cool video Phil. Was missing the E30 updates. A bit more info on the rear suspension set up would be appreciated. Semi trailing arm cars are a bit of a lost art. Could you fix the eccentric bolt moving issue with a lockable washer. Seen similar with a bmx chain tensioner style design for camber brackets. but ran vertically.
Thanks! I always thought I'd be swapping to an E92 M3 rear axle in the car, but it works very well with all of the work we did to raise the beam, so I'm not going to bother now.
I'd tip you to next time take a Leveler (bar with air bubble thing) and put elasic bands on it to measure every corner. Then you know if the leveler youre measuring with is actually straight up
I've been waiting patiently for a new video of the beautiful e30. ❤❤❤ She is truly a work of art. Would you ever consider selling her? Thank you gentlemen. Great work, as always.👍🏻✌🏻
I think I know why Starky is taking his time to get his car done.. We've already seen the engine been pulled apart for rebuild.. So its probably ready to drop in, and he'll get it wrapped in an afternoon. Hes just holding off to create suspense!
Should use a straight edge square (L shape) place the base of the L on the plate then the vertical line will be perfectly straight, as your tape measure wont be perfectly accurate

Hey Phil, can i ask why you raise/lower coilovers on the spring preload instead of the coilover damper adjustment?? I though that spring preload should not be used as height adjustment, I just bought some HSD coilovers from you guys and it specificaly says that there shouldnt be preload on springs Thanks
Hi, as I mentioned in the video when telling Jay how to do it, I previously set the damper length very accurately to bring the bump stop into play at the very last point before the tyre hits the chassis. If I adjust at the bottom cup this will change and the tyre could potentially hit the chassis. When talking about mm's of preload it makes no difference to spring rate etc 👍
Because it's never in the same place. Depends on the car & I'll generally remember what shim is needed anyway. It's just a new ramp and about a year since I did it.
12:38 Did I see right that Jay changed the height of the coilover with spring perch? That changes spring preload and damper bump/droop ratio. That coilover has the bottom sleeve for height adjustment. Just sayin'...
There’s a good write up on corner weighting here: www.turnology.com/features/corner-balancing-lot-important-think/ my only critique is lowering the car directly on the scales and not enough roll back and forth. That said, another great vid of a pretty awesome car!
I love this car but it frustrates the shit out of me seeing how relatively simple things turn into 3 days work! I'm only watching a video, if either of you had more hair this kind of thing would facilitate the process along ;)

It's perfectly accurate enough for me. You'd have to lean it a substantial amount to make even 1mm difference.

How come you're changing height on the spring preload?
I've already set damper length to bring the bump stop into play exactly where I want it, just before the tyre contacts the chassis.
are you happy with the htg controller? are they still in business because it seems to be hard to get in contact with them at the moment.
I'm not currently no, but it hasn't been set up properly yet.
@@driftworks lemme know, really considering dct but lack of reliable tunability is really off puting.
A few house bricks on the RHS will sort it.... :-D or potentially move a battery /spare wheel/fuel tank
Did you consider a sequential when buying the DCT?
Not at the time. I am considering it if I can't get the DCT to work. But it will be a real shame having put so much work into this.
Does adjusting the spring perch effect preload?
Yes. very minimally with these sorts of movement.

"it drove pretty good last time, not gonna do too much"
just a few tweaks.
Would having the bonnet open not make any difference on the corner weight? Or it is too marginal to make a difference?
It does effect front and rear bias a little, but not the cross weights.
What wheels and spec are these on the E30?
I can't remember the offsets off the top of my head but they are Work MCO racing (supplied by Driftworks of course) in 17x10 and 17x9 IIRC.
which front struts are you using on this car? because they are not stock e30 M3
