In truth, the Number 7 Arcade Classics' screen is based off an older model Pacman tabletop "portable" arcade machine by ColeCo that used some kinda funky late 70s/early 80s era LED display. The 8-Bit Guy did a video about it on his channel a while back where he tore it apart for a clean-up and got it working again.
I saw that, Weeaboo. I enjoy the 8-Bit Guy as well. As much as I enjoy the old Coleco games (I own a DK), that's not what I expect in a modern tabletop. 😀

Ok, I got one of these arcade games back in 2017, yes I am a pac man collecter/fan. I love pac man and I won’t stop playing it on one of these, When I got the My Arcade Pac man, I played it NON STOP! I still have it to have fun during the 2020 pandemic. I’m suprised it lived trough dropping it 5 times, it only got scratched... I still have it though and it still works
It's good to hear that the MA unit is durable. It's mostly an empty shell with a tiny single-board computer nestled inside, so there's not that much to break, I guess. 😀

Hey Jon, I just found out that there a few hidden jems inside the My Arcade Pacman game. They are Dig Dug, Galaxian, Galaga, and Mappy ( I love that game) and are playable. I find them fascinating yet creepy at tge same time. Creepy in that just like your Joust/"Defender" video you have to take them apart and be like a Dr. Frankenstein and put it together again. A great money saver when successful.
I always watch your showdowns because I don't actually know what to spend my money on and I subscribed to you and I agree #14 arcade classics plays exactly like pac man the sound really sounds like the arcade I really had so much fun with my arcade classics collection. I take them to school with me just for me not to be bored and I share with them to my friends.
I Really love the Arcade Classics Pac-man 14! It's the best way to play Pac-man with correct audio on the go! It's So cool! I don't like "My Arcade" because it has NES roms! Bad thinking, "My Arcade"! That is not an on the go Arcade player, it's an on the go NES Arcade player! Arcade Classics Pac-man 14 is the best was to play pac-man on the go!

Glad to see they stepped up. Have you tried Namco Museum Mini? Supposedly 20 arcade rooms for $99? I might have to get just because. It includes Pac-Man and Galaga. :)
I have the Connect 'N Play of Pac-Man (35th Anniversary, 2012 - 2015) from Jakk's Pacific, I tried that out and it looks very close to the arcade version. It also includes other games in there like: Super Pac-Man, Pac & Pal, Pac-Man Plus, Pac-Man 256, Mappy, Galaxian, Galaga, Dig Dug, Xevious, Bosconian and, "New" Rally X. Maybe you should try that out 1 day. ;)
I know what you mean. I feel like this is the sweet spot for something you could put on a shelf. Much bigger and you would start to need counter space. I get the impression that these are much more intended as collectibles than daily drivers.
I have a question for you Jon, thr Xix did a review of the My Arcade Pacman game featured in your video. His ghost roll call after the title lists their names in Japanese, while mine list the ghost names in English. Which version of the ghost roll call do you have? Do you know if the Japanese named ghost version is an earlier version of the game? I prefer the Japanese version myself.
@@GenXGrownUp true on that which I think sucks. The Basic Fun version of Pacman has just the NES style title and instead of the roll call it switches into a blank maze similar to the Ms. Pacman Basic Fun version. I saw another channel that reviewed the new gold Basic Fun 40th Pacman and used the same homebrew ROM that was used for #14. It would have been nice for a newer version with a roll call and easier gameplay plus a less tiny screen (advert pics show a much bigger horizontal screen unlike the reused vertical screen in the actual release)...but you can't have everything.
Just a small correction, but the Basic Fun unit does not have cornering. The ghosts just don't have pathfinding and randomly turn away, it just happen to pick up instead of left. The only mechanic Basic Fun incorporated movement wise would be the fact that pellets slow you down. The NES ROM however, has scatter mode, pathfinding as well as cornering, which is absolutely necessary for longer play sessions. The only thing Basic Fun really has over My Arcade is the sprite colors and sound effects. From a programming perspective, the My Arcade units (all three versions they have released) are hundreds of times more accurate to the arcade rom. The ghosts do not chase you whatsoever, and instead just randomly wander around. But it's the only option since they didn't incorporate the cornering mechanic, because the cornering mechanic is what allows you to escape ghosts while eating dots. So their solution to prevent the ghosts from killing the player outright is to make them NOT chase the player. I'm currently working on a 1:1 Pac-Man recreation, to the point where it can run patterns, and from what I've seen, the My Arcade pocket player is the closest recreation, with the main issues being flipped scatter targets as well as incorrect ghost starting positions. Granted, this is completely ignoring sound or graphical accuracy and relying on how many original mechanics are brought over, being as objective as possible. My Arcade has more of the original intended mechanics than the basic fun unit, although basic fun does use sampled versions of the original audio.
@@GenXGrownUp Fingers crossed for those new ones from My Arcade to be arcade roms, maybe they can finally settle the scores. Was there ever any word on why Basic Fun stopped producing? I'd assume is was oversaturation, but they seemed to sell pretty well in my area.
Why is it so difficult for these companies to use the arcade ROM? It's not a power issue, someone managed to get the pac-man arcade ROM to run on a ZX Spectrum, so that's no issue at all.
Why are they using NES roms and not MAME roms? Also the Arcade Classics #14 looks and sounds great, but like you said, so weird they decided to go with a wide screen only to make it vertical definitely messes up the aesthetic.

You know, my imagination was heavily influenced by the '82 cartoon, so I pretty much just always envision dots as white spherical candies. Kind like Tic-Tacs or the like. Certainly never ghost poop, as you proposed! 😬
I did notice that the ghost behavior doesn't match the arcade original, but that's not surprising. Very few people even realize that the ghosts had determined logic to their behaviors so they don't miss it when it's absent or deviates. As such, copies like this usually don't give it much thought.
I actually happen to have the Arcade Classic #1 Pac Man arcade and let me tell ya, not only it doesn't have color but you also can't play this in the dark since it has no backlight lmao and the joy stick is a little stiff as well
I only ever dabbled in the TI. One of my best friends had one but I didn't. I will explore TI emulation a bit, though, and see if there's something there for me. Thanks for the suggestion.
I disagree. Pac man's NES port is great, but limitations could also be the problem to work with on a device that small. Fun and nostalgic game system, in my opinion. I think My Arcade did an excellent job with the art design and taking the time to release this product in stores. It is Pac man. Game itself, is somewhat like the original arcade. Graphics of course, no! Their is problems with the port itself that will be mentioned, issues have with: 1.) Cannot save highscore. 2.) No two player 3.) Hard to move Overall I think the game deserve's a 2nd chance. I really do not care if its not the actual arcade rom. Find it fun and exciting to play it
I don't mind the NES port of Pac-Man. It being on a miniature arcade cabinet that has the original Bally Midway art just ruins it, as if it is false advertising, and I got scammed.
It's really splitting hairs. I might lean slightly toward the AC14 for more accurate sounds, but the Pocket Player has better gameplay and I like the portability of it. The point might be moot since the AC14 is hard to find while the PP is still widely available!
It’s very true on the AC14 harder too get and who ever has it they know it’s a good version of Pac-Man so the prices are up there, but on the pocket version Pac-Man can find better deals out there thanks for your reply 👍🏻
I reviewed it here: th-cam.com/video/cI3VVoCl0l4/w-d-xo.html And compared it to the Pocket Player here: th-cam.com/video/aN-YaouuUoM/w-d-xo.html Maybe these will help.
Arcade classics by Basic Fun kept trying to "Improve" the Pacman from being a Gamboy Pacman knockoff to a Coleco knockoff to being an accurate version of the gamescreen, BUT I still wish they would have used the classic cabinet like the My Arcade. Was it a rights issue???? The Basic Fun coin drop "whacka" sounds a lot better than the generic coin drop Ms. Pacman and looks like it plays better than than Ms. Pacman. I think I picked up the wrong pac game lol. I still HATE the cabinet art!
It's certainly the best of this bunch. Have you seen my review of the MK? th-cam.com/video/SfweonHnnlU/w-d-xo.html Just know that it's the Genesis ROM and the blood code is disabled. Otherwise, gameplay is faithful.
@@carson_39 If you have time, take a stroll through the comments on that video. After lots of group testing, we've come to the conclusion that the codes are recognized, but do NOT activate the bloody fatalities. It's nerfed.
Hey sir why haven't you reviewed the smallest arcade Pac-Man it's in the form of a keychain in my opinion it has the best graphics in the best sound quality for what it is
@@GenXGrownUp thanks for the quick response much love to your Channel, this little mini arcade keychain is pretty legit when it comes to the sound and the quality is very similar to the one that you reviewed but in smaller pixels of course still for being the size it is it plays really good
Pacster Retro hey I saw in cvs or Walgreens something like this pac man but Bluetooth radio do you know if they still sell them I like this mini portable only thing is you get tired easy hard to control if you got big hands
I still think the Basic Fun #14 is the best in this $20 price range. If you are a big enough fan, then something like the Numskull Quarter Arcade Pac-Man is far superior, but it's >$100.
GenXGrownUp well my kid has that first one you played, which is probably the worst one, My kid got it as a gift and didn’t like it :/ so I want the closest one to the original Pac-Man but when ever I go to Walmart I never see any, I just see the one he already has.
Sorry to hear that, and I'd give you a link if I could, but they're not order-able online -- you'll need to go to a brick and mortar store. I've heard horror stories of people trying to order specific units online and getting different ones when they pick them up. Just hit the stores and look for a #14 on the side. If that's not do-able, you could always try paying inflated prices on eBay. Search for "Basic Fun 14" or similar.
I wonder if you can do the patter trick.. In the original life size gamed of Pacman I reach 83 Blue Key before I got kick out by the store owner.. I was playing for 2 hours with 1 quarter.. I had a cool patter that if you stand under a T shape wall with Pac man facing up the ghost cant kill or touch you.. you can go home and take a shower change clothes and come back and keep playing without dying. like I said I reach 83 Blue Keys ... Also the lil My Arcade Pacman can get hack into getting 4 more gamed if you look for it her and they show you how..

You know, my imagination was heavily influenced by the '82 cartoon, so I pretty much just always envision dots as white spherical candies. Kind like Tic-Tacs or the like. Certainly never ghost poop, as you proposed! 😬
@@GenXGrownUp ever noticed the sliw one "Pokey" aka Clyde was made the sly leader and the "leader" Blinky was the coward the 82 cartoon show?
Yeah. In the other Pac-Man cartoon, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, they have their original personalities.
In the arcade classic version blinky goes in the wrong area, for the scatter mode.
I did notice that the ghost behavior doesn't match the arcade original, but that's not surprising. Very few people even realize that the ghosts had determined logic to their behaviors so they don't miss it when it's absent or deviates. As such, copies like this usually don't give it much thought.
I actually happen to have the Arcade Classic #1 Pac Man arcade and let me tell ya, not only it doesn't have color but you also can't play this in the dark since it has no backlight lmao and the joy stick is a little stiff as well
Thanks for watching. There are two more reasons I'm not looking to add that one to my collection. 😉
@@GenXGrownUp oh I forgot to mention, worst of all, you start with TWO lives instead of three
The second arcade looks like my black Tetris game boy Pac-Man 🎮😮
Hey John would you view the Texas Instruments TI 4A computer sometime soon?
I only ever dabbled in the TI. One of my best friends had one but I didn't. I will explore TI emulation a bit, though, and see if there's something there for me. Thanks for the suggestion.
I always find it disappointing when these manufacturers don't work off of an original arcade ROM with a custom version of MAME.
Yep, I'm right there with you, MagCynic. 😀 I hope you will subscribe and check out much more of our GenX-inspired content!
Their is problems with the port itself that will be mentioned, issues have with:
1.) Cannot save
highscore.
2.) No two player
3.) Hard to move
Overall I think the game deserve's a 2nd chance. I really do not care if its not the actual arcade rom. Find it fun and exciting to play it
I don't mind the NES port of Pac-Man. It being on a miniature arcade cabinet that has the original Bally Midway art just ruins it, as if it is false advertising, and I got scammed.
If they went that route the little toys wouldn't be $20.
I have both the 7 and the 14
I have the 1 too now that I thought about it
Same here.
Thanks for info :)
You bet!
coolest video and coolest game
Thanks, Anahi! 😀 I hope you will subscribe and check out much more of our GenX-inspired content!
Do you have any idea of the price of the 14# Pac-Man mini arcade?, or how much money is around.
Keep an eye on eBay. They'll often be listed there between $25 and $50.
Do you have any of the My Arcade pocket players?
I have this Pixel Player: th-cam.com/video/5WhLrHrB6DQ/w-d-xo.html
From this Arcade classic Pac-Man #14 compared to My Aracde pocket player Pac-Man what version is better of Pac-Man any help will help thanks. 👍🏻
I wish you could add 40th anniversary pacman from my arcade to it
I reviewed it here: th-cam.com/video/cI3VVoCl0l4/w-d-xo.html
And compared it to the Pocket Player here: th-cam.com/video/aN-YaouuUoM/w-d-xo.html
Maybe these will help.
pac man #14 look soooo good
Agreed!
I own number 1 of arcade classics
Nice. Working on a full set, are you?
Yeah well trying to I still haven't found any other ones yet
Arcade classics by Basic Fun kept trying to "Improve" the Pacman from being a Gamboy Pacman knockoff to a Coleco knockoff to being an accurate version of the gamescreen, BUT I still wish they would have used the classic cabinet like the My Arcade. Was it a rights issue???? The Basic Fun coin drop "whacka" sounds a lot better than the generic coin drop Ms. Pacman and looks like it plays better than than Ms. Pacman. I think I picked up the wrong pac game lol. I still HATE the cabinet art!
I have the 14 it's awesome I really want the mortal Kombat one
It's certainly the best of this bunch. Have you seen my review of the MK? th-cam.com/video/SfweonHnnlU/w-d-xo.html Just know that it's the Genesis ROM and the blood code is disabled. Otherwise, gameplay is faithful.
@@GenXGrownUp yeah I watched it I think there might be a code that you can put in with the buttons to add blood and normal fatalities
@@carson_39 If you have time, take a stroll through the comments on that video. After lots of group testing, we've come to the conclusion that the codes are recognized, but do NOT activate the bloody fatalities. It's nerfed.
Hello. May I ask, where did you order the Arcade Classics 14 from?
I picked it up in person at my local Walmart department store.
Hey sir why haven't you reviewed the smallest arcade Pac-Man it's in the form of a keychain in my opinion it has the best graphics in the best sound quality for what it is
Great suggestion, Manuel!
@@GenXGrownUp thanks for the quick response much love to your Channel, this little mini arcade keychain is pretty legit when it comes to the sound and the quality is very similar to the one that you reviewed but in smaller pixels of course still for being the size it is it plays really good
I have the number 7 and in my opinion it's great. I love the fact that it looks like a Game & Watch. It's also more challenging.
Pacster Retro hey I saw in cvs or Walgreens something like this pac man but Bluetooth radio do you know if they still sell them I like this mini portable only thing is you get tired easy hard to control if you got big hands
Ngl this helped a lot 😅
Thanks for not lying. 😉 Glad I was able to help!
I love playing pac mania
Then you should check this out: th-cam.com/video/QeuR9oO32MQ/w-d-xo.html
Pac-Mania rules.
I have my arcade pacman it's so fun
Nice. 😀
It’s actually a lid screen for the 7 one
What's a lid screen?
Hi mate, hope u are having a great day so far! I am just wondering other than karate champ what is ur favourite my arcade mini retro game?
Even more than Karate Champ, the Premium Space Invaders is the best of the line as far as I'm concerned. th-cam.com/video/toNj8jkGKxw/w-d-xo.html
Sorry mate, and other than space invaders, karate champ and Pac-Man from, what is the best from my arcade other than them 3, thanks!
@@appall7555 It's close. Probably Bad Dudes or Elevator Action.
@@GenXGrownUp if you don’t mind can u rank all the my arcades from best to worst, please?
@@appall7555 That may be a future video, but I can't do that here in chat.
Hi, just wondering what mini pacman you would say is the best, thanks in advanced
I still think the Basic Fun #14 is the best in this $20 price range. If you are a big enough fan, then something like the Numskull Quarter Arcade Pac-Man is far superior, but it's >$100.
I have the #1 but never opened it, it's just shelf candy. The new box looks better to me. Maybe.... no I'm not buying another lol
Hey, BitDG. I like the new boxes as well. You ought to just eBay that #1 and get yourself a #14, my man!
Yeah, you should sell the #1 on eBay for an easy $100. Then you can buy like 5 other arcade classics with the money!
I like the second one better
Any more fun board games based on video games solo varient?
I think the biggest problem they have is that the pattern doesn't change between levels
If you could, please let us know which ones can be modded to unlock more games?
Is that M.U.L.E or an AT-AT on your shirt
I want one either way!
Good eye. That's a MULE. The characters are on the back.
I have the myacrade brand ms pac man machine. It only plays the nes version though.
Do you know how long it lasts
It is 3 PAC MANS!!!🥠👻
I picked one up for $10. worth it to bang around
I just realized that I have number 1, the only thing I don’t like about it is that there is no backlight
Yeah, it's pretty bleh.
Do you compare monopoly arcade mini machine pacman
You know, I have the new Pac-Man Monopoly and just might take a look at it if time permits. Thanks for the suggestion.
Were can I find that number 14 arcade you show?
It's now in most Wal-Mart stores, Zero X.
GenXGrownUp well my kid has that first one you played, which is probably the worst one, My kid got it as a gift and didn’t like it :/ so I want the closest one to the original Pac-Man but when ever I go to Walmart I never see any, I just see the one he already has.
Maybe a link ?
Sorry to hear that, and I'd give you a link if I could, but they're not order-able online -- you'll need to go to a brick and mortar store. I've heard horror stories of people trying to order specific units online and getting different ones when they pick them up. Just hit the stores and look for a #14 on the side. If that's not do-able, you could always try paying inflated prices on eBay. Search for "Basic Fun 14" or similar.
GenXGrownUp maybe you said they aren’t order able online for some safety reason, but I just found it online -_-
I wonder if you can do the patter trick..
Neither of these are original arcade ROMs, so ghost behavior and patterns developed there don't apply on these toys.
Let me know when the speeded up version comes out... When is anyone going to release a Jr pack man??????
Pac-Man Jr. would be a great change of pace from repeated Pac-Man offerings.
@@GenXGrownUp yeah, I have a coin op real jr pacman with speed up chip at home ... The kill screen shows up around 3.2 million
Diffrence bweeten number 01,07 and 14 of pacman classic arcade machines
Number 1 and 7 are gaming and watch
Number 1 looks diffrent
Number 7 is the same but with two buttons
And number 14 ACTUAL PACMAN
It sounds like you just recapped this entire video.
Better to play on phone 😅😁
Arcade Classics #14 where to buy best?
walmart.com
I have this new version #14 as well, I removed the plastic and had reset it and it still won’t get out of trial mode 😩 please help!!!
Oh, no. Sounds like the trial button is stuck. I'd gently open it up and check on the trial switch inside.
