Carl, the tailgate staggered lowering feature is most likely to help prevent rain intrusion during a loading event in inclement weather.

The styling reminds me a lot of Star Trek The Next Generation! Same large black glass control panels, same beige or cream leather and carpeting, wood trim, uncomplicated lines with RGB light lines accentuating the panels... To me it feels like a modern take of the bridge of the Enterprise D.

I love Carl pointing out the design points and decisions, bringing to light how early in a design process a decision like flocking/wrapping/molding something like a cup holder is pretty valuable. I know these are all things that people watching Munro Live sees when they’re sitting in the car, but the addition of *requires a design change early* shows the level of commitment to a style vs commitment to design.
It was immensely poignant of his to pose the question: Would you rather pay for the part? Or the design and engineering that goes into the part(or lack thereof).
This view of the back seat, “making the most of a bad situation” is going to be extremely common I think. I know I would be uncomfortable for more than 20 minutes or so if my legs were unsupported behind my knees like his were sitting there.
Light pipes and floating bezels are all hype for me. I noticed they even do it in the hatchback area too. It’s a bit try hard of a look for me… RGB in PC builds are not classy, they aren’t classy in this merc either.
I havnt been around this vehicle yet, but I perceive it to be slotting into an electric S class slot. If that’s the case, MANY of the “new hotness” features in an S class of all generations don’t age well; I feel like this will be more of the same.

Really detailed review, nicely done. Carl is the real deal!
As an MB customer, the user interface and the styling is very familiar to me even though I have owned models far lower in the pecking order. The approach to styling is very similar even in a C class, though obviously with more detail, better materials. As for the user interface, when I see the interior lighting swirling around, I would know exactly where to go to tone it down -- and I think most MB owners do exactly that. I know Sandy likes to approach each vehicle as a "renter" would; fair enough, but I do think having some familiarity with the vehicle is helpful in thinking about the owner experience (as opposed to a casual one off encounter) with the car.

The more interior decoration components you pay for the more opportunity for them to design a date into the look. This affords them the opportunity in the not-so-distant future to make this feel and look obsolete. A clean, not cluttered design has a better feel for longer so the intelligent consumer will deny their inner magpie.

I have the tan interior and it has already suffered from a coffee stain but it was easy to clean with resolve. Although you can lower the hatch to any point, I am unlikely to be driving with anything sticking out the back of my car. Overall, a good review. Thanks.

We own a new E400 Cabriolet which has many of the same interior finishes as EQS. It screams luxury especially with off-white interior.
While the E series has 50% less ambient lighting and no hyper screen, everything else is similar to EQS. We love the massage seats and fragrance dispenser. When spending over $100K with Tesla, these amenities should be available. I don’t like wasted space of EQS air vents but understand they are quicker to adjust than Tesla.
Wife & I frequently make comparisons between her luxurious Mercedes & my minimalistic, new Tesla model S. EQS is too much fling for me, so planning to order EQE as soon as it’s announced.

My experience with deep bins--the bottom is mostly useless and tends to get filled with forgotten junk. 16:30
Similar to a tool box where multiple shallow drawers should dominate so all items are visible and accessible without removing anything on top. A minority of drawers need to be deeper for items that won't fit a shallow tray.
(((as a kid I built a 1-ton service truck bed with one of my main tool boxes accessible only from the top and near 2 ft deep, turned out the bottom 2/3rds were essentially useless, you didn't know what was down there after a few months and would have to pull all the stuff out of the top to access which is extremely inconvenient, inefficient)))

To see the cool stuff you have to lift the body off the chassis which Munro wont get to do on this loaner. Yes its very easy to open. Some people just love 'luxurious appointments' and a luxury look and feel and MB has a status they like to project. Not me, but I know some who that is the defining reason to choose a car. Also that backseat screen could have a small remote control (or 2) like an Amazon Firestick that controls a menu on the screen.

Carl makes excellent points. Many of us may notice several things if we do the same. But not all, and probably very few of the subtle ones. I really enjoyed it.
On the whole, I don't like mood lighting that much. Yeah, it's moderately pleasing, but I can't quite shed the idea that innovation in more important areas might be beneficial. Both the EQS and, yes my ID.3, have mood lighting but no frunk. What would you rather have? I'd rather have the frunk. And there's space under my bonnet, if only VW had moved a few things to accommodate one. Under the EQS bonnet - actually it doesn't open. So limited storage overall.
Those air vents remind me of many cars designs, going way back to the Ford Cortina Mk I. Hardly innovative, but done with style. Worth the money? I prefer it all nicely tucked away.
And what's with the headroom? Why do many manufacturers insist on having a slab rear seat these days? Surely you can lower the back portion of the seat to gain an inch of headroom, side and above, and better thigh support? But of course, then it's slightly harder to get out of, and we must focus on our customer's age bracket. Must we? Yeah. Make them uncomfortable so that they can easily slide out of the seat at the first opportunity.🧐

One of the complaints about a Tesla is that it doesn't have a spare or a place to put one. Does this car? If not, the complainers should take note that you don't get a spare at $130K either.
Also, what's in the "toolbox" in the rear trunk under compartment?

    • @tesla_tap
      @tesla_tap 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm not aware of any EV that offers a spare. For that matter, most $1M+ cars don't have a spare either. Many ICE cars have also ditched the spare. The tire technology keeps geting better, and no spare frees up more storage space and increases range & MPG by reducing weight.

@@tesla_tap Agreed. I'm sort of tired of hearing the ICE crowd crowing about the ICE Makers including a spare when Tesla doesn't as if this is a show stopper to owning an electric car. I actually purchased a spare with a convenient carrying bag and I carry it when I'm not taxed for luggage space. I can gamble on the few times when all the space is utilized.

Almost all new cars do not have a spare. As far as I know no EV has one. Battery space, of course.

Looks like Mercedes Benz needs Carl’s technical analysis on its interior design analysis. If I were to get EQS, Carl has provided me all I needed to know to make a decision.

hopefully that's RGB leds and it will be user configurable. i like the led trim but stuff like that you should have a nice factory option but give the user ability to set when it's on and what color it will be. bonus for user color fades and animations. i dont know much about this car but looks nice. tesla still for me though.

The rear center "screen"/control place to be is obvious. On the rear head rest. One screen on each side for back seat passengers. Then it is in eye level for entertaining too.

I enjoyed this walk through. This car seems to be designed more for ladies than men, although I like it.

Backseat looks uncomfortable. What lady would drive a luxury car like this and not have a driver/chaperone? Thus a chaperone'd lady would rather sit on the passenger front seat for the comfort, and no one would do that so ... No go.

Carl - thanks for a very informative review. But, did you say how tall you are? You said 'big' but how big? Since your head was too close to roof in back seat and a little too close in front seat, it would be good to know. And how did you fit in the Model S?

With all that function of the rear hatch I wonder if it could be used as a spoiler... or maybe active aero under braking lol.
All jokes aside, really well done video showing the intricate details of the interior design.

The half position of the hatch is there because in European Garages you might not have that much room over the rear of your car.

I own a Tesla Plaid this interior much nicer than my Plaid but I'll take the car design, the technology and the software. When Tesla can marry the 2... damn watch out.

Mercedes has 100 years of "coachbuilding" expirience plus the supply chain to provide the niceities. I dont Tesla will ever compete in this level, nor do I think they want to. They hardly sell any model S cars as it is.
