    ~~~ A lovely hello Mrs. Heidi and please say a hello to Patrick for me. I do enjoy every video you both make. Mrs. Heidi you know some of your channel friends way out here watch your videos inside their homes or are older or disabled. Your videos are the way they see the world. The BEST thing they remember is the joy in your face. And just how wonderful you are to them. They really think they are visiting you in your home. May I say in a very polite way for all of us WE ALL LOVE YOU........GOD'S....JOY.
    If your tree or bushes aren't too large, you can sew together sheer curtain panels from garage sales and thrift stores to make covers. Hold them in place with clothes pins. They keep the birds out, let light and rain through, don't damage the plants, and are so much easier to remove for picking the berries than bird netting. They also won't harm the birds if they happen to find a way in. Just lift the fabric and release the bird. I've had birds get tangled and injured in bird netting. I want to try some of this tape for the larger berry patches.
    Saw the falling rooster! I thought you would be mentioning something about chickens and blueberries. When we freed ranged our chickens; they loved getting the blueberries.
    When I was a kid and we had this huge cherry tree in our yard; my mom hung pieces of aluminum tin pans on the tree (long before cd’s). I like the ideal of the ribbon.
    The strawberry plants are just getting a bit of growth here and this morning I had to run out the back door to chase a deer out of the patch. She stood there looking at me like "you're interrupting my breakfast!" I finally got her to run off. I've used bird netting but it's an inconvenience for me trying to remove it. I've used old CDs before, but I like the idea of the mylar tape. I'll need to try that. Thanks for sharing! Blessings 💖 Mickey
    My husband finally had to build a frame with wire around our blueberries. Nothing else worked at keeping the deer out. I put a rubber snake on our porch light because a robin kept trying to build a nest on it and she ended up building her nest right on top of the snake. Oh well, maybe it would work in a fruit tree.
    Heidi, the mylar tape can also be purchased at craft stores. That said, I started saving old CDs and DVDs back more than 10 years ago, looking forward to the day when I'd have fruit and nut tress and hoping the flashing would help keep deer away. Obviously for night time, these things are less effective, but I'm hoping the old adage "every little bit helps" will ring true as I start my orchard. Great video and thanks!
    I tried that tape, CD's and tin can lids. I found that after a while the birds get used to it so I went back to netting. For deer an 8 foot fence is the only sure deterrent. I know it is expensive but it works.
    Just looked at Amazon and they raised the price to $7.85. Last week I looked for $20 Mule Team Borax. It was $4.45 at Walmart, $4.50 at Dollar General and . . . . $14.47 at Amazon!! Talk about price gouging! But thanks for the idea. Maybe I'll have some ribbon stashed away that would work in the same way.
    I tried the Cd's and the birds got used to it I will try the scare tape. I put pieces of tinfoil on one of my cherry trees and when the birds lit in the tree the foil rattled and scared them away. I actually had cherries that year. I suppose the birds will get used to anything. I tried whirly gigs too and they were great for awhile. Seems they get used to most anything. They are around waving tree branches and grasses so they can get used to the scare tactics too.
    I have used pie tins & old cd's on the end of a string, attached to my tall shepherd's hooks. However, when the wind blows, they get all tangled up. This year, I will set them further apart because they do seem to work. I also have plastic owls & a couple hawks that I filled with rocks to set around the yard. Part of my problem with the birds is that I feed them all winter. I love to observe them. Rest assured NONE of these tricks will work on squirrels, bunnies or ground hogs. :-/ ANY ideas on those, Heidi?
    bird netting is a royal PAIN!!! tulle seemed to work well last year.
    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว
      I have used netting from leftover fabric for dance costumes, it does not tangle as badly as bird netting but it disintegrates over time. I think tulle lasts longer and that is why it is more expensive than the nylon netting
      @@RainCountryHomestead I got a whole bolt for 10 bucks, bird netting costs more, at least in neck of the woods. It doesn't last as long as the netting, but I get a few years out of it. I also use old sheer curtains, they don't catch on itself, wash and store for next year; have used old cds, but the cabbage butterflies are undeterred by those😂 birds I had not paid attention to .
