Delicious recipe! I used all fresh herbs from my garden and swapped out the sour cream for whole milk Greek yogurt. I also added 1 T. buttermilk to thin it just a bit for easier pouring. It's a keeper!! :)

You can! To get the same texture as sour cream, use a full-fat plain yogurt as opposed to non or low fat.

I agree 100% with dried everything in this except for the dill. Fresh dill just adds so much more depth to the dressing.

If you want to use buttermilk and don't have any at home, you can make it with regular milk and white vinegar. Just measure 1 Tbsp vinegar into a 1-cup measuring cup, then fill to the top with milk. That's it! Enjoy!!

When I was in high school Hidden Valley Ranch came out in packets. It was based around mayonnaise and buttermilk and up here in New England you can buy buttermilk but you're going to have a court and you it's going to spoil. I liked it when it first came out like that we made it as the house dressing so to speak for quite a while. I do like the straight-up seasoning to make the dressing with and use it in some of my cooking. It adds that little something something that people say what's that they don't quite know. Now Ranch is ubiquitous so people are used to the flavor however when I use the powder without mixing it it has an entirely different flavor.

For typical dressing consistency its supposed to be one to one of mayo and typically buttermilk, but can use regular ole milk, so 1 cup Mayo and 1 cup buttermilk. Someone has already listed how-to make buttermilk from milk. You can also use lemon juice instead of vinegar. Now that works for dairy milk. I do not know if it works for alternatives. When I first started making the packaged version the only way I knew to make buttermilk was with sour cream, with a 1 to 1 ratio, so 1/2 cup of sour cream and 1/2 cup of milk, blend/whisk these two together then add in all of the seasonings and get them well incorporated which is easier than trying to get them all well mixed into the more thick mix of all wet ingredients at once, then whisk in the 1 cup of Mayo. I use the spices or if a rush or out of something I will use the packaged mix. My family, including extended family won't eat anything else unless they have no choice, like eating any where but at home. 😂 The freshness, flavor, thickness and silky kind of texture is so much better. Using the SC and milk in those ratios makes it a thick and Pourable mix or can use a spoon to serve plus can be used for dipping and will make more as it makes two cups. For typical dip its usually the sour cream or yogurt and mayo only, in that 1 to 1 ratio.
    So yummy!!!

+Allrecipes Thank you very much ..... I also heard about it replacing fettuccine Alfredo sauce .. like instead of heavy cream you put a bit of yougurt and milk to thin it out

+Irene Screamer i make a lot of sauces with greek yoghurt and mayo. i start off 50/50 and then adjust to taste. There is a lot of 0%fat greek yoghurt available here which makes the sauce a lot lighter.

Oh I also love to blue cheese dressing and make my own which is just delicious because a lot of bottled dressings have that tongue tingly thing it's from potassium benzoate used as a preservative and it's like baking soda. So I don't have to add that my refrigerator is ice cold in fact anything pushed to the back will freeze and it keeps indefinitely in the refrigerator. Very yummy. Nowadays I will occasionally add an avocado to the Green Goddess and the most field and satiation from it is lovely. Sorry for rambling but I've had a horrible shock to the system and I don't have anybody to talk to so attentive comment quite a bit lately.

do we have to use dried dill weed

    • @allrecipes

Are you looking for a substitute, le'mya hardwick, or do you just want to skip it completely? There really isn't another herb that tastes like dill. The most recommended replacement is dried tarragon.
