None of this stuff ever mattered to me. I never did most things. I know myself and my limits. It's important to stop falling for trends and just take most things with a grain of salt. I will say though that the natural hair movement really helped black women learn to love their hair. We saw and still see black women embracing texture. For that reason I'm not mad at all.
I guess I didn't let it stress me out. I have learned a lot from them in regards to technique, but the three most important things I've learned since I first started watching hair vids in 2013: 1. Run to water 2. Just bc something works for another person, doesn't mean it works for me and visa versa 3. Too much of a good thing is, most of the time, bad. I'm still happily natural and I now have healthy hair (thankful for that and info from CCs).
Cosmetology school doesn’t address black hair specifically. I don’t fault the natural hair movement, it was an experimental era. This occurs with many things that’s unknown, it’s ultimately the lack of knowledge. I think the movement was actually birthed from a real thing but capitalism is a real thing and corrupts many things.
Glad i found what worked for me out the gate. Been natural since 2011. Just left my hair alone and it grew. Still growing. People just do/did too much.
Sis the egg, Mayo and avocado hair mask is an old household staple! I grew up watching my mom make that same homemade hair mask minus the blender. It works wonders for moisturizing your hair ❤
I remember the movement and I still love it. I’m low porosity and use LCO method. My hair is doing great! Yours looks beautiful. Your shrinkage is crazy! Your length must be midback
I love everything said in this video. I was knee deep in all the products, videos, and gurus. I was Constantly comparing and trying to get it like the girls on the screen. What a frustrating time. So love my 14 month old sisterlocks. Should’ve done it 12 years ago
All jokes aside, it was a beautiful thing to watch back in the days, I was in earlier so I was with the OGs, kimmaytube, blackonyx, charyjay, africanexport, rustic beauty, pretty dimples, Man the good old days! It was a journey of discovery and I was amazed with everything I could do with my hair. Kimmaytube was my go to girl, no nonsense, low maintenance, no excessive styling and protective styles. I wonder what happened to them. I am happily loc’d
Love this comment! OG TH-camrs were a saving grace back in the day. Most of these TH-camrs gave sound advice and were pretty minimal in their habits. It was a wonderful time to be on TH-cam. Oil use, yes. Slathering, no. Keeping up with too many trends will be a recipe for disaster but learning good practices and following product instructions will often yield improving results.
Oh I remember all the OG's!! 😂 I remember Kimmaytube saying that she left because of the hateful comments that was being thrown at her. She got fed up and left. Last time I checked she had her own hair care line. Also Black Onyx.
@@lela2216 Oh wow. I had no idea she was experiencing hateful comments, that's so disheartening :(. I still watch her old videos and I still use her products interchangeably with Naptural85's product.
Love your analysis. The Eggs, Bread, and chicken statements had me cracking up🤣🤣🤣 and the look on your face with the ladybug "Tasha" on the wall 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks so much for your entertainment of it all!
2023 i started wearing my hair straight with a Brazilian keratin treatment. No regrets. I spent HOURS on wash day. Pre pooing, washing in sections, conditioning, deep conditioning, detangling, trying to figure out the best wash and go(shingling for an hour and a half) diffusing, for 5 days of decent hair. If something came up on wash day i either couldn’t go or it pushed my wash day back another week. I eventually got to the point where i was dreading wash day and keeping my hair in a bun. Finally i just said straight hair me please. Legit hour and a half wash day start to finish. Bi-weekly wash days. So much easier
I'm natural and I don't get that. I think they tricked you on how long wash day should take because it ain't never take that long for a good wash and go.
@@melancholygirl7793 or maybe our hair is just different. I have super dense, kinky hair. Detangling alone is an hour, sometimes longer if i don’t wash once a weak. Shampooing, getting out the shower to deep condition under the dryer for 20-30 minutes. All that takes time for me.
@@keina2121 I have very dense hair as well that can knot easily. What I do is that I do some easy finger detangling with oil before I get in, even easier If I have it in twists/braids. Once the water hits, I comb through with my fingers as it soaks in. I make make a few twists to make shampooing easier. I never deep condition out of the shower. So washing my hair doesn't take very long.
I love watching Natura Hair content...but it couldn't be me🤣🤣🤣 who has the time?!?! I legit went back to how my Auntie would do my hair Saturdays before my dad would bring me back to my mom's house🤣🤣🤣 Wash, deep condition, blow dry, flat iron. Wrap it at night and don't touch it again til the next week!!! I literally spend an hour and a half total on my hair a week.
I learned a LOT from natural hair care channels. And after 10 years of strengthening and growing my hair I just decided to relax it 😅 since I reached my hair care goal I guess my next goal is to have low maintenance hair
Im soooo glad you talked about diet. I've been screaming this for the longest and for the whole natural hair movement, no one gave consideration to it. That old expression "you are what you eat" is exactly what that means. What you put in comes out. On the skin, through hair growth and of course, on our bodies and weight. Healthy diet=healthy hair, etc. Thank you!
Absolutely had a chokehold on me haha I think by the time rice water came out I was starting to lose faith though. I did take a course on the chemistry of oils and that was a game changer no lie. Like, Now I know why certain products work in my hair and can make pretty educated guesses about whether a new thing will work (or will do what it claims). Not gonna lie, I also LOVE Naptural85's line. I haven't tried all of it, but what I have are all pretty holy grail~y. At least standards, so I don’t feel like I need to experiment. I think it's important to find out what will work for your hair. And I think the reason that was so frustrating is because we didn’t really have actual context to help us do that. We would just kinda guess and accidentally find something that worked for us. I think things are a bit better now. Also yes. Definitely drink water and take care of yourself internally. No amount of prepooing will beat a lack a nourishment.
Consider getting sister locs. I loc’d my hair a year ago for all the same reasons and it’s been the best hair decision I’ve ever made, besides going natural. I got about 200 sister locs and now I just wake up and go, literally…and I don’t need any products bedside shampoo. I was able to do do the locs myself but you can get a loctician. Much ❤
It helped me a lot. And the biggest lessons I learned were about porosity and that every product doesn't work for everybody. We have different textures, porosities, and densities to consider. It was fun learning about my hair after having relaxers since childhood. Being natural is a lot of work but it doesn't have to be. Just find the simplest shit that works for you and stick to it. It was a learning process. Now I just stick to monthly washes and deep conditions, water and glycerin. When I need to style, I use a light leave-in with light gel.
A lot of them didn’t say that they had texturizes because I’ve caught a few doing texturized and calling it natural but really it was a light kiddy perm. Edit: also I didn’t get how their hair would grow they would cut it and grow again and I’m like “it’s something they’re not telling us”. And you’re right eating healthier did help, when I juiced almost everyday for a month my hair did grow.
Yeahh i remember I was so into one of the youtubers. Even wad in contsct with her now and then. In the end some people tried to expose her and never heard from her again. Phew
I remember the recession of 2010ish and then using pantry items in my hair bc i couldn't afford the expensive natural hair products. That's where i think this came from, a recession happened, so put food in your hair. 😂
Hair porosity just means how your hair accepts moisture. I'm high and my daughter is low. I can't do the same things for her that I do myself. Her hair will stay moisturized for weeks!!!! Mine 😅 a few days smh Just means my hair cuticle is more open than hers and I can get and lose moisture fast. Once I put moisture in hers and close it back she won't lose it as fast. I also use the LCO method. It works for us! I love oils and butters too 😂 and I only wash my hair once a month maybe twice
Got weird looks from black people outside West Africa when I said Shea Butter doesn't grow hair and that I had never put it on my hair. They were being sold it at an exorbitant price by West Africans swearing that's how their hair was so thick and long. People don't want to be told they can't have something because of genes. So be it plastic surgery or cosmetics people will be duped.
No matter what your texture is, curl pattern, or whatever, none of it matters as much as keeping your scalp clean. Apparently African Americans (according to sources) have the thickest sebum (natural oils) that would coat our strands if there weren't bends in the hair. The longer you wait to wash it, the more layers your scalp produces (but also make sure of the amount of production you produce as an individual so you know just how long you can go without washing). Like the pores on your face the pores on your scalp can get clogged by those natural oils. Probably would help with the balls of hair you pull out too (I know I've had that problem)
Jamaican black castor oil is amazing, the best thing to come out of being in that natural hair care fad. Also no one mentioned how avocado + egg concoctions should not be used often because that made my hair break off after a bit
Coconut Oil (penetrates and conditions), Castor (both humectant and emollient), Safflower Oil(Ceramides that controls how moisture dissipates and when it's enough), Olive Oil (Squalane (UV Protection) and finally (Jojoba Oil that mimics the sebum). These oils are hands down the best!
I honestly love your video. We can't get caught up in trends. We have to do what's best for us. Once I stopped perming and was completely natural my hair grew a lot but I have other issues now. LOL, I'll stick with what I know. Personally, I love Pantene shampoo & conditioner.
Lmaoooo I was a part of the natural hair TH-camrs and baby it went back much further than 2012 😂 after I got tired of it, I got locs, then did the big chop… something happened around 2012 and that was the WIGS! It’s really wild how we set these trends and capitalism LOVES it! I couldn’t believe how many brands started adding shea butter… it was wild. I love that we can be versatile and that everything WE do becomes a movement. I enjoyed watching this, maybe I’ll comb my hair under this wig today. 😅
I was natural for 15 or 16 years. Spent a mint on products once I found youtube. Got locs 3 years ago and gave away a ton. Now it is homemade shampoo, oils, and water. After the gym on a non wash day- oil ,water, and witch hazel mix. Your journey changes but I am so glad they were there for me to help and offer inspiration. Hope they are all doing well
Honestly the natural hair community taught me a lot. I've been natural For most of my life and the only thing I did was wash and comb. When I got tired of combing I would shave down to my scalp and restart the journey again. When I was done with high school I let my hair grow and my sister convinced me to put step one on it and I listened To he but didn't know how to maintain it. My hair was shoulder length and 4 months later my hair shed so badly I was left with new growth only. So I started researching and the j natural hair community help a lot. Aloe vera was my besty and I'm sttill using black castor oil.
Girl yes! Thank you! 😅 This was the realist video I’ve seen about the hair community. All the do’s and don’ts had me stressed out. I eventually gave up. I said whatever my hair has a good response to imma use it. Thank you again for the realness ❤
I 100% agree with this. I have been natural for 5 years but for 3 of those years I was in a spiral of trying products. Now, I finally determined what works and that’s all I use. Unless my hair changes, I don’t plan on trying new stuff anymore.
Pfff I feel you! But Tho I feel like from the 2010s -2015 there were a lot of good youtubers like Dephne Madyara, GeraldineTheGreat, NaturallyHigh, Rusticbeauty and Jostylin! I love Natural Academia ATM , she is giving of the same vibe and easy routine! 😂❤️❤️❤️
I started transitioning back in 2010 due to having a bad relaxer and just wanted to grow my hair healthy. I cut my hair off in 2013 after transitioning for three years. I have been natural for 10 years and I’m going to texlax my hair next month. Honestly, I’m over this natural hair 😂. It’s too much work and honestly the natural hair community became a joke to me. I can’t recall which year this was but when people started to do the water wash only method on BLACK HAIR I knew it was time to leave them alone on TH-cam. Now I’m to the point to where my natural hair is waist length and it’s just to take for me too much to deal with every day.
@Orange300 No. There is no one thing that people should or shouldn't do. This is part of the problem. For some people, texlaxing is just fine. For some people, they'll get a keratin treatment and still call themselves 'natural' like they didn't just get a chemical straightener. For some, they'll do a wash day that takes ALL day, convincing themselves that this is what they need to do because 'someone on the internet said so.' So no. Your opinion is just that - YOUR opinion.
It was actually initially an Abbreviation. It was “L O C” not loc initially but I guess people have also kinda started saying loc as an acronym. But you’re correct, its not a mnemonic
It means Leave in, oil, cream. Which never made any sense to me because, after you put the oil on over the leave in, the oil actually seals the moisture of the leave in on the hair shaft. Which is a good thing but, the last layer of cream doesn't get absorbed because of the oil and just sits on top and creates buildup. I always felt that, you should apply all your moisture products first (leave in + creams or conditioners) then do the oil to seal that moisture in. Let the hair dry a bit then do your hair gels to hold your curls.
@@chrystallee5528 that’s why the LCO is the most appropriate to use. L is not necessarily a leave in but can be any form of liquid, then cream and then oil to seal in and prevent moisture loss.
The detangling meltdown!! 🤣🤣🤣You’re talking to us but I do this rant in the mirror. To myself while my arms are aching. AND yes what goes in is what comes out. Good health=Good hair. Loved this video your delivery had me laughing yet so many home truths!! New subscriber here!
I busted out laughing when you said some of us don’t know how to cornrow. For the life of me I can’t plat or cornrow my own hair but can do other people’s hair 🤣🤣🤣
Aw man you said had the whole pantry in our head 😂 I was around eight I guess when this was around, I didn’t know much about it. I’m natural, but my mom does straighten it and rn I’m being fucking rebellious, last yr I learned to love my hair, this year I’m loving my hair and being anti - straighten cause first I don’t like it and second let me get my afroooo man 😭 I literally don’t like straight her and she got it for my 14 b day cause she couldn’t find a braided, I cried when she was straightened it and I hated it, obviously it wasn’t a perm so it got back to its thickness in like four days and I wore it to school thick and stuff and liked it. Her excuse is that it’s long nd u can do the true length and how long it can be and it’s like broooo MY HAIR IS LONG IN ITS AFRO NATURAL LENGHT obviously the shit is long even when not straighten like god damn. I realized when I wet my hair that I see damage, even when my mom does my hair near my hair she can see how thin it is. Basically two weeks ago I cut the back lower part of my hair that was in twists ( only like four or five twists) because it was thinning and I love that decision, it looks so beautiful rlly jsut knowing that’s it’s healthy and that it scrunches back up more. ( actually my mom came in and saw the back part of my hair sticking out and she said, look what u did to your hair, do you even like that. Me : yes. Her: rlly (my name) ) Because when I wet my hair, my hair is straight at the ends and I hate it. It’s sad knowing that my hair could’ve been this long and healthy, but because it got straightened for “ special events” when growing up it’s not . Also my mom found out nd she was in shock ofc and said don’t do it again. Mf in my head I’m like idc, it’s my hair. Anyways I’m going to get a trim soon and I was to ask my mom it she can do a little cut , not a trim. I don’t even think she’d allow me to do a big chop 🤷🏽♀, so parts like near my ear I rlly rlly short tho so if it got even I’m might at well cutting off my whole head of hair lol, so I’ll let it grow out and all of my hair styles since last year have been with my hair and I’ve gotten so many compliments and it’s like I’m wearing my natural hair out, I want it to look healthy and not thin.
Hi. Love the video. So glad I didn't do all these trends. I'm too lazy to do all that! Although some natural hair content creates were the REAL DEAL! Just to correct you. LCO - Leave-in (a leave in conditioner) , Cream, Oil. LOC - Leave-in, oil, cream. The 'L' doesn't mean liquid. 🌻
I'm a white girl with (I guess I have 2B/3A hairstyle) curly hair and I understand your frustrations... I see a lot of girls saying how to do your hair but it does not work for me and it keeps looking awful, sometimes even like it's all knots (even when I detangle)... It's a search for everyone with curly/coily hair but we'll get there.
This REALLY isn't the time or place for your comment. Because no, you don't "understand our frustrations." That's a part of the problem. We had a space FOR US that was promptly invaded by others who co-opted the natural hair movement. You are not a part of the "curly/coily hair" story. You're just...not. This is for us and BY US.
Me, I like putting eggs on my hair it feels so cooling + my hair loves it. That doesn’t mean it will grow my hair like crazy it just makes my hair healthier and that is what matters for me😊
You’ll fail if you’re looking to have your hair look like theirs. They are showing you what works for them. They were all trying different things and products and some of us watch and mimic what they did. You have to find what works for you. Before going natural, I knew what my porosity was. Before buying products I’ll look up the ingredients to see if I wanted it in my hair and start buying the ingredients and making my own products. Yes we are still deep conditioning and using plastic bags. Your hair is all of the 4s. Tasha was tanning. You’re funny 🤣
Too funny!! I’m so glad I’m not loose natural anymore! Watching you do your hair is taking me back. Ugh.. detangling. What a process! I actually loved getting to know my real hair texture. I didn’t get into all the products and trends but it was tempting. “2A3C4BDFG” LOL I’ve been loc’d for almost 2 years. The loc community is not much better though. But let me tell you, I was just thinking how nice it is to drive around with my windows down and not worry about my hair blowing to pieces. And I do way less to my hair now!!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
....... But did you ever try cherry juice? I'm just sayin...... maybe you should try it...... with yogurt.. If it don't do nothing for your hair it will make a delicious smoothie...... Why you looking at me like that?
I did the LOC method and my hair flourish so well. ❤❤ The methods come from many different black women with different types of hair. I think we had a good thing going until our crabs entered. The community was a place for information and how-tos. When you have listened to every other community and it failed, what is wrong with listening to your own. 🤷🏿♀️
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT A COUPLE YEARS AGO I HAD THIS PERM BUT I NOTICE MY HAIR STOP GROWING IN WHICH AS WHEN I WAS YOUNGER MY HAIR WAS DOWN MY BACK AFTER DOING THE PERM FOR YEARS IT WOULD ONLY GROW TO MY SHOULD..SO I STARTED JUICING W SPINACH BLUEBERRY RASPBERRY, BANANA WITH OAT MILK MY HAIR STARTED GROWING AT FAST RATE NOW ITS DOWN TO THE MIDDLE OF MY BACK SO. I DECIDE TO GO NATURAL TO WEAR OUT THE PERM..MY HAIR SO MUCH HEALTH ER SINCE I CHANGED MY DIET...THANK YOU FOR THAR IINOUT THST YOU ARE SHARIBG
I'm from ole school wash on Friday night & hot comb on Saturday. I learned some new things but I kept it simple. I tried the aloe vera which helped but nothing happens overnight. 😂 I've always been a product junking😢. Cowash never made sense to me😅😅. You are what you eat. Thanks for the throwback❤❤
lol I started back in 2012 too taking me back is reminding of the DIY’s.. one was honey so I added it to avocado, banana and went outside to heat it up instead of the dryer and got attacked by a BEE! I felt so stupid like why why why😂😂😂
Great video. While the movement was co-opted, the infighting was distracting and counterproductive. The LOC method helped me to keep it simple - finding an oil that didn’t sit on my hair took some trial and error. After the influencers entered the room, it did become an issue of “too many chefs,” but there is a lot of great information that came out of it overall. And if some people learned about other -isms via hair, so be it. 😂
You are so right. I was natural for about 6 years and it was frustrating. I did see improvement but I those six years I covered my hair and couldn't comb it due to hair loss at the edges and front of my hair. I did the equivalent of a comb over to cover those defects and only left my natural hair out a total of maybe 3 or 4 xs out of 6 years😮😢. Anyway like you I believe a good internal diet is essential. Also porosity is still confusing to me. Anyone who has so called 4c hair like me does not have the same experiences, I realize this now and it may be due to diet or otherwise. Anyway. I now have a curly perm. Soooo much easier
When I first went Natural in 2000 my Mom kept asking me, "When you gonna do yor hair?" 😅 There were no products available for natural hair so, I just did what worked for me. I used Kerasilk products. Stopped washing with shampoo 99% of the time. Just their conditioner and kept the leave in in my hair. I knew nothing about Co washing, perosity, curl retention etc.. I was surprised to find out 6 years later that the things I did to my hair had names. My hair grew really long, thick and healthy. It's been 23 years now and I started flat ironing my hair last year because, it started to shed alot over the past 3 years and tangles to much. I suppose it's an age and hormonal issue. It's just easier for me to wash, condition, dry, flat iron and wear it in one braid. I'm just working on preventing as much shedding as possible and keeping it neat now.
Well, where do I start? First, the way u described u did the techniques, especially the application of the JBCO, is the reason why u had these pimples on your face. Second, I agree that most of these influencers were throwing products on our faces just for the coins. But one thing I know is that I've been able to reach hip length hair twice just by following some of them good tips! I learned that black hair can grow by simply being consistent with a good simple regimen: wash hair once a week, deep condition every wash, moisturize and seal, and trim twice a year. That's what I did! 😊
Whew girl! Thank you for calling out the content creators that decided to pivot and are now doing something else. Now they are talking about modesty, marriage, race etc. I just shake my head at those sistas now. I never bought into all the product and excessive products. That was just to sell crap. Less has always been more and I never had time for all of that. I've had microlocs for 5 years and have locs that are mid-back length. Girl, those old natural hair videos were a hot mess. 😅
I've been natural all my life none of theese methods are new but it's important to know why you do certain things especially if you are looking for results chemistry is important
yall so negative and hyperbolic. natural hair HANDS DOWN did more helpful than good, changes lives and our perception of our own beauty for the absolute better. I'm still natural and am not being fickle with these trends.
Yeah, I can complain about how the natural hair community changes every eight seconds all day! What's up with everything counting as self-hate? 🤨 I can remember a time when all you had to do to count as self-hate, by the natural hair community's standards, was to straighten your hair (or bleach it blonde). But now? NOOOOOOO! All you have to do is breathe wrong! Dreadlocks, stretched afros, baldness... It's ALL SELF-HATE NOW! Really? We need to stop this. Who can afford every new hair product that comes out? Some of us can't be product junkies. Because forget affordability, what if you're allergic to it? 🤨 Everybody believes in cocoa butter, but that stuff messes my skin up. And what about that one time black people thought olive oil was good for black hair? Man... that stuff dried my hair out! You can't try EVERYTHING! These people want you to walk around bald practically (not that that's a bad thing for obvious reasons (obvious to my subscribers 🤣). I can't remember if they use aloe vera for hair, but that breaks me out, too. I have acne-prone skin, so I know it's not a good idea to let my pores get clogged. It's just not. I'm not gonna use every product they decided to push off on us. Even if it means supporting black businesses. I mean, if it's something that works (and doesn't break me out) it's worth a shot. But constantly product hopping? Nope. And, yeah, the detangling thing... not everyone is good at doing hair (straight or natural). I definitely can't cornrow. 🙁 Yeah, it's embarrassing, but it's true... 😞 I was nine when my mom first gave me dreadloks... God, has life changed! I no longer wear natural hair, but back when I did... life was so different. That was one of the hairstyles that a lot of people were not willing to commit to. And, in my opinion, it was somewhat looked down on (even by the natural hair community). For that hairstyle to be seen as self-hate now... man... Life's just crazy. I would have never thought in a million years that that would be the hairstyle that would make others think you were trying to comply with Euro-centric beauty standards! Yeah, I just can't go back. I admire those who wear natural hair, but I just can't go back.
@@uberhaute_naturalz84 Yeah, the ones that use olive oil, with other things to offset it, should work. But I have control issues, so I think someone is gonna come up and just rub it on my head. 😟 So I just stay away from it, and try to pretend it doesn't exist (I also do this with aloe vera).
I was using all these expensive natural hair products and my hair was hardly growing. My scalp was also very itchy. I started using Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo and Conditioner every other day. I also use Aveeno Lotion on my hair as a moisturizer and boom….it started growing like crazy. I know they say to only wash once and week, but my 4a/4b needs more and responds positively to it. You gotta do what works for you!
yep, when I finish all the hair products that I have, I will go back to the Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle products...That stuff rocks...As I swim at least thrice a week, I wash my hair frequently with the Mielle Babassu conditioning shampoo...
@@MonicaJNYC Yes….The shampoo and conditioner work surprisingly well, especially if you swim a lot. I still have a ton of products left and none of them work as good as the ones I’m using.
Crazy because the Tea Tree Tingle was a BIG deal back in 09-10. I used it for a long time. I switched to Mielle organics back in 2018 and never looked back
Almost 75% of the chicks on here with hair videos are lying and deceiving people. I did try some of those techniques. They failed me and damaged my hair worse. They lied about how fast their hair grew, oils, and texture. Also, a that it only takes less than 2 hours to style from start to finish (crochet styles).
Great video. Thanks because I honestly just started rice water and im drinking the fenugreek water and you have me lmao because i am lost and confused, but I want some healthy hair. I been natural since 2012 and i havent had the same growth since then so clearly i missed up a long while ago. Thanks again for the video
I don't understand this natural community? What did that mean? I've been natural since 2004. I used what worked and discarded what didn't. Water, tressame conditioner, blue magic coconut oil, eco styler, 10 braids, braidout. Mid back length hair 4a hair. Took me about 1hour I day a week. I have no idea what yall are doing that makes it this stressful. I never bought a single product that cost more that 5 dollars at Walmart. Yall was out here stressing out about hair...chile.
No because the GIRLS really had me STRESSED! I used to spend 11 hours in the beginning, prepooing, shampooing, masking, deep conditioning, conditioning, LCO, styling etc. NAH!!! Now i spend no more than an hour LOL wash, condition, AND GO!!! Of course it depends on what youre doing, how much time you WANT to spend doing it etc. They could never get on accord when it came to textures lol til this day i still dont know fr!!
People also act as if "heredity/genetics" is/are a dirty word(s)...If you didn't have long hair as a child, you probably won't grow long hair as an adult...
But on one hand, some people don’t know if it’s genetics. Chalking it up to genetics only would mean black people cant grow their hair long (which is false) because the majority have their hair short (men) and a lot of women either wear weaves, have their hair in braids with extensions or are relaxing it. A lot of black people also just never got the chance to see their hair growth potential because from kids their parents were putting creamy crack, relaxers, perms, whatever in their hair. Or straightening with irons. (Women, which resulted in damage to the hair and scalp) and for boys growing their hair out the hair styling for them was seen as “thuggish” (twists) and Afros were seen as “unruly and unprofessional” so they got it shaved. The obsession with length amongst the black community when it comes to hair is not a coincidence. It’s not a coincidence the black women with the looser textures have long hair either. A lot of them, when they were younger they never had to go through what a lot of those with type 4 had to because their hair was considered “good”. That’s just my 2c tho.
@@Calihon88 I get your point, but the fact is, some people (regardless of race) have long hair and some don't...Those that are genetically predisposed to have long hair can grow their hair long without any special products or agonizing routines...It just grows...
Not gonna lie o tried the egg and mayo a few times during my initial stage of being natural😂. But rice water and rice conditioner is still my go to and i swear by it.
You did the loc method wrong. Leave in conditioner, on the whole hair, oil (for me argon oil) all through the hair then cream. But it’s not for me either. I do LCO. With a little bit of oil. But I fully agree it was too much everyone’s hair is different and you need to work out what is best for your own hair.
Love your honest and informative content ..Your hair looks very healthy so you must be doing something right✨ I'm on the fence trying to decide whether to go back to relaxers after trying natural styles for 5 years. TY for your refreshing content *New Subscriber ✨
Remember the meme for Natural Hair Wash Day? Included the usual 10 items plus Hidden Valley Ranch dressing, vanilla pudding cups, and Sweet Baby Ray's! 😂😅😂
Yeah I never been taught how to have twist or braids stick to my head I’m not even educated on even what it’s called …. It’ll be terrible if I had a kid
The lady that coined the LOC method even admitted that the LOC was made up and she only said it cause she knew black people would lap it up during the height of the natural hair movement. How to have healthy hair: 1. Shampoo and condition OFTEN. 2. Use ONE styling product (gel OR wrap foam) 3. Get trims on time. 4. NO OIL. It dries out the hair by preventing moisture from the environment entering the hair shaft. 5. Cover hair at night. Basically what our mommas did 😂
Meanwhile this list wouldn't work for my hair. Hair would be dry dry. But I think that's the point. People need to do what works and not fall prey to rules.
Growing up my my momma used to relax my hair and DRENCH it in oil so it was always flat looking and getting tangled. When she stopped the relaxer it didn’t matter because it would always be blowdried anyways. The same flatness, dryness, greasiness. Never wore my hair out because I hated the way the grease looked and felt and SMELLED, and was taught kinky hair was too fragile and difficult to wear, and I always hid it under fake hair… my scalp was always flaky and dry, and my mother’s solution was to drown it in MORE grease and tell me my head was just sensitive! Eventually my scalp had ENOUGH and started reacting very strongly and suddenly to all that grease and fake hair. Flakes got even worse and my scalp was always red. Hair was falling out WITH the roots! I was a teen at this time so even though I had the sense to know what I was talking about, I was still in my mothers house using her money and her time for my hair lollll… so I had to be arguing with her about how it was the oil and fake hair that was ruining my scalp, not her version of a “lack of moisture”!! I had to shave off pretty much all my hair. But guess what? … The solution was nizoral for two weeks and *water.* Like you said, no oil. All I do now is wash the hair once every week or two (with SHAMPOO, not co-wash!), use ONE conditioner or curl activator, detangle with the tangle teaser, and twist my hair up. The end. It’s grown so fast and thick and soft, and all I have to do to “maintain” is occasionally trim the ends of said twists with scissors at home. No scalp irritation, no grease on my pillowcase, no strong smells, no wasted time! Twisting my hair is the longest part of the process and that’s just because I enjoy playing with it. I ENJOY my hair now! The idea that kinky hair folks have to be doing EVERYYYYYTHING under the sun just to have manageable hair is a myth!! My hair became more manageable when I stopped deep frying it! If your hair doesn’t wanna hang or the curls don’t wanna loosen you don’t have to force it, but I think that’s what a lot of people think “manageable” hair looks like… nevermind if they can ACTUALLY maintain it or not within a reasonable timeframe. Defeats the point. Keeping the tangles and breakage away is one thing. Keeping the 4c away is another. Tl;dr: I agree w everything you said, minus the momma. Lmao
Stop. I’m definitely using that bag. But I do it in the shower. I do the shampoo and then I use a mask or deep conditioner and then put that dang plastic bag on and go about my business until it’s time to wash the stuff out. I let the steam of the shower set and warm up the product.
Exactly , I miss natural hair community though.
I never left it..im still natural. Still watch videos still learning new stuff
I'm still natural 10 yrs strong and I stay at basics hair grease and wash once to twice a month depending on my scalp!!! My scalp loves it.
Me too. Wash, deep condition and scalp grease every 2 weeks.
I’m going on 5 years.
Yeah, I started back in 2008/2009 and it was much more pure
i feel that lace front youtube kinda interfered when the natural hair side of TH-cam was having a moment.
Glad i found what worked for me out the gate. Been natural since 2011. Just left my hair alone and it grew. Still growing. People just do/did too much.
Natural Hair community helped me so much. May God bless all the those ladies. I went from relaxed to natural and now Locs.
So thankful ❤
🤣🤣🤣🤣been there. Now shampoo, condition, hair grease, twist, DONE
Jungle barbie, chescalocs, senu,
Love your analysis.
@@crystalebarnicle9628 I believe that's called straight natural.
Do you ever give your hair a small break from the heat?
I learned a LOT from natural hair care channels. And after 10 years of strengthening and growing my hair I just decided to relax it 😅 since I reached my hair care goal I guess my next goal is to have low maintenance hair
Do you 👍
Lol❤
Be careful with the relaxing. It’s linked to several types of cancers. But aside from that enjoy your hair ❤❤
@whosthatgirl6559how does food causing cancer make relaxers causing cancer a good thing?
Im soooo glad you talked about diet. I've been screaming this for the longest and for the whole natural hair movement, no one gave consideration to it. That old expression "you are what you eat" is exactly what that means. What you put in comes out. On the skin, through hair growth and of course, on our bodies and weight. Healthy diet=healthy hair, etc. Thank you!
I went natural because my hair fell out from relaxer damage and alopecia 13yrs ago been natural since .
Did it grow back after you went natural.
@@sarahlysobey2917 yes my hair length is a lil pass my bellybutton now it took me 13yrs to get it that length
would have been alot quicker than that if I already knew how to manage and grow it out
Absolutely had a chokehold on me haha I think by the time rice water came out I was starting to lose faith though.
YESSS with the rice water… 🙄😒
@@kayjay5143 🤣🤣🤣🙈 a bridge too far. And then the Chebe powder, do remember that?
Phew

Well, I don’t know about the community but I’m still natural since 2011. I cleanse, condition and style with a gel, no grease or oils since 2018.
I'm still picking egg out of my hair from that one egg "conditioner" I attempted to do back in 2015 lol😂😂😂
😂. Oh no, scrambled eggs!
I remember the recession of 2010ish and then using pantry items in my hair bc i couldn't afford the expensive natural hair products. That's where i think this came from, a recession happened, so put food in your hair. 😂
I still have and love my natural journey! So here with it, so...especially with these prices, making my own products has been a blessing
I do STILL the LCO method I find it better than LOC METHOD
Hair porosity just means how your hair accepts moisture. I'm high and my daughter is low. I can't do the same things for her that I do myself. Her hair will stay moisturized for weeks!!!! Mine 😅 a few days smh
Just means my hair cuticle is more open than hers and I can get and lose moisture fast.
Egg = Protein. Too much Protein will cause hair breakage.
Jbc caused me scalp irritation.
And coconut oil, now its argon oil.🤦🏾♀️
just find an oil that works for you and stop complaining. 🙄
@@rosejames5172 I was referencing the comment about brands modifying their products: shea butter, coconut oil, argon oil, etc.

Now I’m to the point to where my natural hair is waist length and it’s just to take for me too much to deal with every day.
oh, I forgot that one (water only wash)...lol...sometimes you just have to use "common sense"...
@Orange300 No.
There is no one thing that people should or shouldn't do. This is part of the problem.
For some people, texlaxing is just fine. For some people, they'll get a keratin treatment and still call themselves 'natural' like they didn't just get a chemical straightener. For some, they'll do a wash day that takes ALL day, convincing themselves that this is what they need to do because 'someone on the internet said so.'
So no. Your opinion is just that - YOUR opinion.
Sis, LOC is not a mnemonic. It’s an acronym. 🥰
I think that acronym is another word for abbreviation 🕊❤️.
@@wisnakow no it’s not. They are 2 different things. Google is at your disposal.

Aw man you said had the whole pantry in our head 😂
I was around eight I guess when this was around, I didn’t know much about it.
I’m natural, but my mom does straighten it and rn I’m being fucking rebellious, last yr I learned to love my hair, this year I’m loving my hair and being anti - straighten cause first I don’t like it and second let me get my afroooo man 😭
I literally don’t like straight her and she got it for my 14 b day cause she couldn’t find a braided, I cried when she was straightened it and I hated it, obviously it wasn’t a perm so it got back to its thickness in like four days and I wore it to school thick and stuff and liked it.
Me : yes. Her: rlly (my name) )
Because when I wet my hair, my hair is straight at the ends and I hate it. It’s sad knowing that my hair could’ve been this long and healthy, but because it got straightened for “ special events” when growing up it’s not
Hi.

So glad I didn't do all these trends. I'm too lazy to do all that! Although some natural hair content creates were the REAL DEAL!
Just to correct you.

LOC - Leave-in, oil, cream.
The 'L' doesn't mean liquid.

“2A3C4BDFG” LOL
I’ve been loc’d for almost 2 years.
The methods come from many different black women with different types of hair. I think we had a good thing going until our crabs entered. The community was a place for information and how-tos. When you have listened to every other community and it failed, what is wrong with listening to your own. 🤷🏿♀️

yall so negative and hyperbolic. natural hair HANDS DOWN did more helpful than good, changes lives and our perception of our own beauty for the absolute better. I'm still natural and am not being fickle with these trends.
Yeah, I can complain about how the natural hair community changes every eight seconds all day!
What's up with everything counting as self-hate? 🤨
I can remember a time when all you had to do to count as self-hate, by the natural hair community's standards, was to straighten your hair (or bleach it blonde). But now?
Everybody believes in cocoa butter, but that stuff messes my skin up.
Yeah, it's embarrassing, but it's true... 😞
I was nine when my mom first gave me dreadloks...
Olive Oil is actually very good, however, in a well-formulated product
@@uberhaute_naturalz84 Yeah, the ones that use olive oil, with other things to offset it, should work. But I have control issues, so I think someone is gonna come up and just rub it on my head. 😟 So I just stay away from it, and try to pretend it doesn't exist (I also do this with aloe vera).
@@TechnoGlowStick I understand you and I must say that you are the real deal.
Things got real dark real fast with Tasha….
You haven't put an egg deep conditioner in your hair and it shows😂😂
I remember putting oil on my hair before I went to bed and having oily pillow cases. 😒
I'm sorry I'm crying laughing because I was doing that too LMAO!!!
You’re freakin fantastic,I love this video❤️
Definitely subscribing at this very moment(before I forget it)😁
I was using all these expensive natural hair products and my hair was hardly growing.
Im still natural but having 2nd thoughts after 20 yrs
"AVOCADO, EGGS, BREAD AND CHICKEN !!" 😭😭😭😭
Not gonna lie o tried the egg and mayo a few times during my initial stage of being natural😂. But rice water and rice conditioner is still my go to and i swear by it.
Oddly enough I started to go back to LOC. My hair is recuperating.
The home made stuff was a mess ngl. deep conditioning/oil rinses is where its at fr. I still do the loc method tho 🤭 works for me
I never paid attention to any of that.
I learned my hair needs moisture and I give it that...
The end.
Finally, an honest talk about the natural hair community
I legit would put a egg in my hair.
Real talk..I trust that as deep conditioner more than ANYTHING on a shelf.
Look up the science.
Science is Bomb❤
I still fall for some of trends. Right now it's cloves.
Lol, you are hilarious. You have a good texture of hair and great a length. The shrinkage is real. ❤
Not a 4 course meal in your hair 🤣🤣
Have you tried the #30dayhairdetox ? The detangling method can be cut down to between 5-30 mins for short to medium length hair.
How to have healthy hair:
1. Shampoo and condition OFTEN.
2. Use ONE styling product (gel OR wrap foam)
I can't just use 1 styling product lmao.
Lmao
That rice water worked for me 😅
🤣🤣🤣not "bread and chicken" .
you forgot about Vicks, and Monistadt...lol
Rooting for Tasha to survive through this video.
Stop. I’m definitely using that bag. But I do it in the shower. I do the shampoo and then I use a mask or deep conditioner and then put that dang plastic bag on and go about my business until it’s time to wash the stuff out. I let the steam of the shower set and warm up the product.
By the way, I really enjoyed your video and agree with everything you said. You made me laugh A LOT too. Love your sense of humor. God bless you 🙏🙏🙏
Girl calm your dam nerves 😂😂 doing the most.
