What is the Ford Probe?

  • come hang out and listen to me talk about the (most hated?) coolest car there is. The Ford Probe was a car ahead of its time and yet still doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Probably because everyone's too busy obsessing over JDM cars! So come, stay a while, and learn about the car that could have been the 4th gen ford mustang!

A driveshaft would've added weight, slowed it down and taken up trunk/floor space. Then every a-hole would've ruined them drifting into walls, raising the price. The real shame is not having the KLZE available in an RX-7/8, KLDE MX-5. 300k mile, 7k rpm, engines that did need a RWD platform. Mazda already had it.

Why would you re-engineer the entire car to compete with Silvia's when you could just offer the Japanese engine and let it compete with Integra's, Prelude's and Eclipse's.
      The Probe could've been a V6 hothatch.

I had 3 of them 1993, 1996, 1997 Ford Probe. Same car, but i loved it so much that i bought them at different times. I used to fill up my tank with $10. Until gas started getting crazy. I ended up filling up the tank with $22 at that time. The Probe had really comfortable seats, and it drove so smoothly. I was also amazed at how quiet the car was. I, of course, ended up putting a muffler, headers, racing coils, and a stage 2 clutch with a performance pressure plate. The gear box on this car was also as smooth as butter. Damn i miss the good old days.

A very underated car. I spent a lot of time in the passenger seat in my late teens. A friend had got his hands on a Probe and some mods to it, wheels exhaust etc and full custom fibre glass body kit and front bar with 4 round lights like the type R Integra at the time. It made it look very aggressive and nobody at the time could tell what car it was. The fastest car i have ever been in at top speed and it really holds well. The fun times cruising and times we got pulled over by the police. Dont forget the windscreen sticker. He had that also on the car.... " ON PROB-ATION"

The first Ford vehicle I ever owned was a 1989 Probe LX.
I was familiar with the model and I had driven my brother's gold GL many times.
At the time I had a 88 Pontiac Bonneville that somebody had hit and totaled and I was going from dealership to dealership and fell in love with a Toyota Cressida but left when the salesman blew me off.
On my way home I saw this white Ford Probe and bought it right on the spot. The one I had was a 'check all options' version. Power windows , locks, power driver seat, removable glass sunroof, trip computer, digital dash. I loved it and never had any problems with it. I maintained it thoroughly and drove it for 3 years before selling it to my cousin when I bought my 1995 Taurus SHO.
The modifications to my car were quite simple.
I had Probe GT tail lights because they were smoked, all the windows were tinted including the windshield, and I had Mazda RX-7 BBS wheels on it.
It was a sharp car and I thoroughly loved it. I regret selling it.

But this year after only a year i wanted to get something "faster"... What a mistake, i sold it to buy a 2000 Catfish Camaro with the 3.8 V6, i sold it only after 2 weeks and i felt so bad selling my probe after that, now i have a 2006 Citroen C4 VTS, you might not know much about it in the US. the probe was ok, I had a few, but the real winner was the MX6 I only had 2 of them tho, honestly at the time,
I wasn’t interested in it and to tell you the truth I thought exactly what you said,
I thought it was a knock off probe,
until I found one so cheap I couldn’t resist,
    it was a 90 mx6 GT turbo,
    once I drove it…
that was it and I was hooked,
the 4ws (4 wheel steering system) and
the aas (3 way electronically adjustable suspension system) was amazing it could take corners at double the speeds of the probe
and would keep up in the twisty bends with my buddy’s corvette,
it was miles ahead of the handling of my z28,
and with a few turbo swaps and mods kept up on the straight with the Vette too!,
a few years later and it was getting difficult to keep the 4ws and aas alive,
parts were getting harder and harder to find and more n more expensive so I just sold her
    and bought a 1996 mx6 lx
Tho only the JDM versions got the 4ws by then and it was okay but nothing like the first gens mx6s,
I miss that car so much at times,
I tried to see if I could find another one and they’re around but every single one I found had the 4ws and aas not working and it’s either the computer systems are fried or parts impossible to find,
the only other car i had that compared to it was my 3000GT VR4, and that’s another car I had to sell due to age and becoming difficult to fix and impossible to find parts,

It was our pride and joy until the head on collision with a white E36 cabrio BMW. After some tinkering I got it to work again without a front bumper or the front clip. The most fun FWD car I have ever driven, and I love the look and sound of them. May have to buy one again sometime! If it was RWD, it would outclass Nissan S13 in pretty much all categories except tuneability (2nd gen). Also you can put a lot of stuff in the trunk, especially with the rear seats folded. The side profile is really sleek, and pop up headlights is always awesome. Really like the wrap around rear window and low nose. The Mustang from about the same era however looks extremely bad, would never buy one of those... good thing they didn´t stick with that design language

Second gen was much better than the first one. The thing that really hurt the Probe was the Mazda engine controls, aka MECs. It was not an easy system to diagnose issues on. As these cars age, the electrical systems have many problems. The other big factor that worked against them is that the Mazda parts are/were very expensive. We used to call the Probe A "Fordrarri". Because the parts costs were often just insane. Especially front suspension and the electronics. I recall replacing the Alternator on a 96 Probe GT was quoted as costing $800 in 1997. As nice as they were, they just don't excite many enthusiasts today because of the sketchy electronics and poor parts availability conspire to make having one pretty expensive.

How did you port the VRIS? The VRIS are on the KL-DE, as well as ZE, on ZE they just open at different RPM.
Also, short ram intake is trash, throw it out, you´re just sucking hot air. Either go back to stock airbox and put K&N filter in, or get a CAI.

@@4kocour424 I mange to come across Mazda Millenia, which had long neck like KL-ZE but the runners were oval shape rather than squre like in KL-ZE. So no re-shaping was required. • @4kocour424
      @4kocour424 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@patch860 I see, altough I doubt that it will positively affect the performance, at best it will cancel out the losses of the Ram air, but I could be wrong lol, just my 2 cents. About the intake - just buy silicone couplers, aluminum pipes and tons of clamps and you can make your own CAI. (It´s a good solution in my country, as it will run you at about 1/3 the cost of "official" CAI). You could also use... Im not sure what is it called in english, but it´s similar in looks to what you put on your windshield against sun/cold. Wrap your CAI in it as the aluminum pipes will get hot and perform worse than stock intake.
As for the location, either relocate the battery and build a new airbox (Take a look at 2005 gen Mustangs for inspiration) where it once was, or lead it beneath and in front of the battery, there is a lot of space and it is also shielded from debris by the plastic cover beneath the engine. You can even lead a flex pipe from the front of the bumper in that compartment to bring in more cold air. (Though you might have to do some cutting and I recommend checking up on your filter and cleaning/replacing it often if you do it, one guy in my country did that and after his engine seized he found out that he has lost his filter, lol)
Just some ideas for inspiration ;)
Good luck with your Probe! :D
