  • Dotted along Route 66 are countless historic tales to tell. Today we drive from Kingman to Oatman, Arizona to casually take in the sights and experience a bit of the Old West traditions - like feeding burros! What could possibly go wrong?
    It's an exploration! It's an adventure! Today we take a drive along part of historic Route 66 from Kingman, Arizona to Oatman.
    We make a quick stop at Cool Springs, the site of an old gas station travelers long ago used on their long trek west where we took in the scenery and met some colorful characters.
    Then we encounter a bunch of burro friends! Three stop us on the road to Oatman and plenty more within the town itself had plenty of thoughts to express about food. We took a quick tour of the street gazing at some of the old historic buildings in search of feed for the burros. One cannot say the place is dull on the weekends as there was an Old West gunfight show and plenty of burros to feed.
    With some leftover feed, we headed back to return home and stopped back off to feed our friends from before. And there... it all fell apart.

    Fun leg of Route 66 😎 To answer your question 🙋‍♂️ the cars had gravity fed gas tanks and if you were low on fuel it would flow to the back of the tank and the engine would run dry

    Take a good look at 29:00, I thought he was going to bite you then. His ears were fully pinned back and walking relatively fast at you. That was his (their) signal. When ever you see horses, burros, donkeys, mules and some dogs (german shepherds,etc.) with ears pinned just back off and watch out. BTW, I've had as many as 60 horses at one time. That's what happens with the wild ones.

      Lesson learned! 😅 We own cats and it's the exact same behavior so interesting to make that parallel. 👍

    I'm watching this a 2nd time, I'm finally making my video about my trip there (I already commented below last year) and I just kinda wanted a revamp of the trip...but I just gotta say...my cat is literally sitting here watching it with me and when Glen got out to stop when the burros were in the road my cat was absolutely MESMERIZED! haha! He didn't know WHAT those were! I told him what they were and he just looked at me and looked back at them lol...funniest thing I've seen today...and way cute!

    Looking forward to a video on Olive Oatman, her story has always called to me. Glad you weren't hurt badly! The shock was maybe the worst of it?!! Yes too many people milling around in Oatman, like you i prefer the hinterlands!

    Early automobiles had gas tanks between placed between the front seat and the engine so gravity was great for getting gasoline to the old carburetors of that time.

    Oatman has always been one of my favorite Route 66 stops. When I was a kid we had some family that lived in Kingman so every time we visited we ended up in Oatman and it looks the same now as it did then.

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't doubt that it will look the same in decades to come as well. 😅 It's a really cool little place. In many ways similar to Tombstone and in so many ways completely different. Seligman is another of our favorite stops too.

    I made the mistake on my first journey along a segment of rte 66 of not STOPPING in Oatman! I drove through it but it was summer and so hot out plus I was kind've trying to make it to Flagstaff before dark. It's such a cute place....I definitely will go there again and then up to Kingman again....loved that drive but it did scare me a little after Oatman and once I was down the mountain area...took so long to get back to the freeway! I thought google might have been wrong!

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, stopping to do anything in Arizona during the heat of summer can just be draining and zap a bit of fun out of exploring. I don't blame you one bit. Hopefully the next time you pass through, you're able to stop and the weather will be nicer. 😄

    Wow you caught some rare trains! In your train shot in Kingman!! The last two engines still have the classic Santa Fe Warbonnet paint scheme. Kingman has a beautiful old Mission Revival style train station building. Built back in 1907 by the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railway! That sidewinder drive is beautiful! The burros are adorable! What a great adventure.

    Oatman is a fantastic day trip but…make no mistake, the burro’s are pushy and can and will bite. I took my mom several years ago and when we ran out of biscuits, one bit her arm. I believe it was food aggression and because several were crowding around it just happened. Worth the trip just be careful when feeding them. The people in the town are so kind.

    Please don’t feed the Burros on the road because they will get hit by car! Only in Oatman and you can buy appropriate health food for them. They drove backwards before gas pumps and the gas was gravity fed and if the tank wasn’t full it ran out so they drove backwards to fix that. I love Oatman and I’m trying to persuade my wife we need to move to Golden Valley but she doesn’t want to leave her kids behind 🤷‍♂️

  • @johntuttle4486

    Donkey is the original animal. Burro is merely Spanish for donkey. A mule is a cross between a donkey and a horse. Carrots work well for horses, probably for donkeys, too. The carrots give you a "safe " handle to hang onto while you feed them. I had a woman give me crap for feeding carrots to the donkeys, but they are good for them, according to info on google.
