  • Croatia's ruling conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party won the most seats in parliamentary elections, falling short of the threshold to form a government. The prime minister, Andrej Plenković welcomed the result in a speech to supporters by saying: 'The important thing is that HDZ has for the third time in a row, convincingly won the parliamentary election.' Plenković said he would begin negotiating with other parties to form a government on Friday. A centre-left coalition led by the Social Democrats (SPD) trailed the HDZ despite support from leftwing populist president, Zoran Milanović, who had ignored a court warning requiring him to step down from his position as president, a largely ceremonial role, if he was to take part in the polls.

Not a huge fan but at least Moscow agent Milanović was beaten. I hope HDZ and Plenković form a coalition with The Homeland Movement, together they have 75 seats they need just one more to form a government. Main thing is to form it without the Serbs, since in the last 120 years only 16 of those serbs weren't in power in Croatia.

My thoughts exactly. I don't like HDZ, but at least they are pro-Ukraine. Milanovic has been an embarrassment...

Nearly all European countries are moving to the right(correct/sane/factual) side of politics.
Better get a bigger box of tissues in at The Guardian 😂

Croatia didn't move to the right, it has consistently been right, the only problem is that some of the right wing didn't live up to the name. HDZ (the ruling party) are guilty of that, having signed Istanbul Convention. We want that gone, and DP will surely seek that to be a part of the deal.
The other problem is the prime minister, who is more concerned with Brussels than local politics, that's why he must go. But there is simply no doubt that Croatia has spoken and they do not want left wing.

As a leftie myself, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but the "conservative" HDZ party that won is actually far more to the left than the SDP (Social Democrats). SDPs President Milanovic is pretty much Croatian Donald Trump. He doesn't respect Croatian constitution as evidenced by the fact that he ran for PM despite the Croatian courts barring him from doing so. He is anti-EU, he is also a big Putin supporter, which goes directly against the majority of what Croatian people want, and his policies boil down to selling off Croatian infrastructure (such as roads, railroads and waters) to foreign capitalists - similar to what Thatcher did in UK. Luckily, in Croatia - the institution of President is mostly symbolic, so he has no power to do any significant damage other than to our reputation with his insane statements. In fact, the only reason why he even got so many votes is because people want to see change and like in most other countries there really are only 2 choices: HDZ or SDP - so pick your poison I guess...
On the other hand, the "conservative" HDZ party supports Ukraine, they are very much pro-EU and want deeper integration with EU, they want to keep our infrastructure as our own, and they even have minorities from other nationalities in their government (something SDP and Milanovic already said he would not allow). The only conservative thing about HDZ is that 20 years ago they used to be very nationalistic, but they threw out most of their hardliners back in 2003. They had a few more cleanups after that once they lost the elections - and since 2010, they have been pretty much a very centrist party, whereas SDP (which used to be a leftist party) has been embracing right wing populism since 2016.
So, if you were hoping for more right-wing extremists - you're doing the victory dance for the wrong party.
