Good vid Matt, I have the 117 stage 4 in my 18 breakout, and my buddy has the 18 Fatboy with the same, when I used to kill his bike on the street he went and got the 117 kit done too. We both eat other bikes and piss off alot of V Rod guys. As you say, they are fast and the torque is incredible. Pity most cant really comprehend this until they ride a stage 4 M8. So I 120% back you up on saying that they are crazy fast. And as you already know are alot of fun to play with. Always enjoy your vids too Matt.
yes, it sure does, with the big cam the rev limit changes with the tune, it powers to 6500, so with higher revs and alot more power it does go faster and get there heaps faster. If you look through responses to my reply to another comment here you will see the power figures.
my stage 4 sporty was a 40% power increase from standard, and this 117 stage 4 is a 30-40% increase depending on pipes and accesories. its not just 10hp, its a huge difference in power.
Appreciate the M8 and own one (17 Road King) so what I'm about to say is not bias or Harley hate...Crazy fast?!! Dude, you want crazy fast on a big motorcycle try a BMW K1600! It will blow the paint off any street Harley for the same money or less if we compare to a CVO. If you want "crazy fast" an air cooled V-twin with a governor is NOT the way to go. Now, let the hate begin...LOL
James Turner Yeah I don't understand why they hide the speedo. You can't get a ticket from a video on you tube as far as I know. Besides, you can still tell he's doing 90 😂
What a beast !! As I watched you bounce down that Cali freeway, my mind flashed back many years to a riding event that will stay with me for awhile. There was a new interstate opening, replacing the old two lane over the mountains. I was first in line when they moved the barricades. Oh my, what an experience !! Fifty or sixty miles of brand new pavement thru the mountains, and no one in front of you. Thrill of a lifetime for a rider. Thanks for the video and the flashback :)
I have a stage 3 114. When I first got it back had the canned map. It ran pretty rough. Had the smart tune pro installed and the bike runs perfect. Harley did a great job with the auto tuner. If you don’t have it get it !!
Hey Matt, your implication is that it’s the tuner that voids the warranty and not the exhaust itself. A few months ago I bought a ’17 XL1200C, new, from my local dealer here in Lubbock Texas. Right at the beginning I started talking to them (the service dept,) about putting on a different exhaust and was told that the only thing I could do was put the Screaming Eagle slip-ons or my warranty would be voided. When asked why, they talked about EPA and CARB and other things specific to California. I recently watched your video about Andrew’s ’17 Street Glide and the oil pump issues he had that were fixed under warranty while he was still running his Rinehart slip-ons and how he later, after his stage 4, put the Cobra 2 into 1’s on. And this is all being done in California. This has become a hot topic in all of the Harley forums and Magnuson-Moss gets thrown out there a lot, but there never seems to be a consensus. I’ve even seen where you’ve told people to “consult their local shop.” So far I haven’t done anything to my bike, other than a few cosmetic changes, and I guess I’ll just wait the other year and a half until my warranty is up and then do whatever I want.
I have pretty much the same setup on my 2018 Fatboy S. SE stage IV w/Bassani exhaust but I have the Arlen Ness Monster Sucker intake, SE 10 mm plug wires, and the SE spark plugs. My governor kicks in at 120 mph which is around 5500 rpms. I've got the SE Smart Tune Pro Automatic tuning module paired with the SE Pro Street tuner. I can not find a way to "turn off" the governor for higher top speed capabilities. This bike is capable of so much more. At the track, I always finish the quarter mile at nearly the same trap speed(s); 118 or 121 mph. The trap times do vary depending on how well I do off the line. Does anyone know how to "disengage" the governor?
Great camera work and breakdown of the parts build! I don't care for the Fat Boy, but I do like the performance aspect of this build, and to each their own. I really love your Dyna builds, Andrew's Street Glide, and Nick's Soft Tail builds! You rock Matt! Semper Fi ⚡
GREAT VID MATT! You did a good job conveying to the viewers about the stage 4 and it's power with a Fat boy. Don't even pay attention to anybody complaing.
Anyone else notice the steadiness in the mirrors?! Even with all that HP that thing still rides smooth. My 2019 Fatboy jjust has the Vance & Hines 300 with proper tuning and still is very solid
Matt, does the 2 Into 1 help with low end torque . I like the idea of a stage 4 but I’m planning a stage 3 117 kit on my 2018 breakout . I want more grunt down low where I ride most . Dropping my catalyst in my slip ons with rineharts robbed me of some low end torque . Doesn’t feel solid into the midrange and I’ve gotten use to it but haven’t forgot but I here the 2 into 1 helps with the back pressure. M8 seem to work with back pressure .
All the "my old bike is faster" and "why would you ride with fingers on the levers" is ridiculous. Don't matter what's faster. That thing seems like it would get the job done. And every good rider I know covers the front brake and clutch. Thanks for making the video. Well done.
people say very hard to turn the Fatboy, is this true? looking to purchase either 2019 Fatboy, 2019 fatbob, or 2019 street bob.. which ever I decide I'm going stage 1 immediately before I even take the bike home. kinda leaning towards the 2019 fatbob. Interested in the west coast MC club style.
Hey are clutches in these normally have that 1/2 inch of slack I’ve noticed? Mine does and so does my buddies, you can waddle the lever bit before engaging
Ah man this makes me want this bike sooooo bad that thing rips!! I just rode my first street glide which was a stock 103 inch about a week ago and it was my first time on a harley and I gotta say for my riding experience it was enough power.
Hey Matt, you may or may not get this question a lot, but can you eliminate the governor on an M8 from either the dealership or the factory? If so, would this void the warranty? And if the factory or dealership will not do, are there aftermarket guys who will?
Matt that bassani pipe sounds so good ....stepped header pipes works so good on M8 bikes. The roll on power looks awesome ...get one of your numbers guys to figure out what gears to swap out and raise the final drive ratio.... quick way to create torque ..it’s not how fast you go but how fast you get there lol
I have a 117 stage 4 Road Glide. It is scary fast. Can’t begin to comprehend what a 100+ lbs lighter bike with no fairing feels like. Your comment regarding: anyone who says HDs are slow hasn’t ridden one of these, is what I tell people.
K shinn I watch the video and am truly unimpressed by the outcome of this build, slow, unstable look at the bar shake. Bike would arguably be faster if you spent half the motor mod money on decent suspension.
I'm not a fan of Harley, but i do like this channel and i did subscribe. I guess there is nothing wrong with Harley, i just prefer my Indians. That Fatboy is a good looking bike, but i hate the exhaust. Keep up the good work Matt, you represent your store well. I came close to buying a Harley once, back in 2007 i liked the 2007 H-D Rocker C but decided to go with the 2007 Victory Vegas Arlen Ness Edition, still have it. Then in spring 2018 my wife was interested in trading in her 2002 Yamaha v star 650 on a 2018 H-D Heritage but by the time they shaved the seat and relocated the kickstand due to being too far forward for her the cost was almost $23,000 and that didn't give her the exhaust she wanted. She ended up getting another Yamaha and got the 2017 Yamaha v star 1300 deluxe which actually gave her a fairing and stereo with GPS and toys and was $6500 cheaper and that included her loud exhaust.
Idk Matt. I’m so tossed up between street glide and fat boy. If I lived in Cali I would visit your dealer. I have a 01 deuce. Semi custom. But need a larger bike cuz I’m tall. What do you think I should get?
Pretty insane but the proof is in the pudding in terms of the bike delivering. Stage 2 or 3 max for most people wanting to ride below Mach 1. Does the bike need a steering dampener to keep the front end in line?
I don’t know if anyone else has pointed this out but I’m a stickler for accuracy when it comes to videos posted by people in the profession, whichever it may be. You said in the video that the Stage 4 bumps the 114 up to a 117, and that is just WAY off. Not sure how you could get that so horribly wrong since you work at a dealership. The Stage 4 will bump the 114 and/or the 117 up to a 131 monster by way of CNC Ported Cylinder Heads with CNC machined chambers and 1mm larger valves, SE8-517 High-Lift Cams, Forged High Compression Pistons, High Performance Cam Bearing and Tappets, 4.31" Steel Sleeve Cylinders, 64mm Throttle Body and Cast Manifold and High Flow Injectors (5.5 g/sec). I own this exact bike, same setup, huge 90 degree Arlen Ness intake. Moved my handlebars up a bit so they don’t point down. That might help taller riders. I have cooler highway pegs on my engine guard ( mounted on the sides, adjustable angles ) for a very natural comfy ride on long rides. Helps taller riders even more. The performance is scary. So much power!! I don’t need to do more than 110, but I’ll get there sooner than most.
So Andrew mentioned the governor at 110. And now you. Is that new for the M8? My Dyna has hit 120 on the speedo, and that's at around 4680 RPMS out of 5600, so conceivably it could go even faster until it banged off the limiter. Any way to turn off the governor? Am I crazy for thinking 110 is too slow?
Matt, a great video by the way and the engine sound reminds me of Steve McQueen's Shelby Mustang in the film Bullit. i am an English guy who currently lives in France and am about to trade in my Roadking for a black 2020 Fatboy which arrives in February 2021. I am going to have a set of Bassani Road Rage 3 exhaust fitted along with a SE8 447 Cam. However I have recently heard on a TH-cam video that there have been some issues with the cylinder barrels cracking and finally breaking up around the base. is this true or is it the normal bullshit or if true has the problem been rectified by HD? Regards Peter Colclough
Hi Matt ..., I have 2012 fatboy lo, looking to upgrade to a wilkaukee 8 / 117ci , maybe a S&S 583 cam/with ajustible rods, etc or stage 4 and a thunder headers ..., with suspension upgrade I want a new hot Rod for commuting . Is there such an animal ? or who can bill it for me ?
Love your videos really informative, I am from Australia. I have a 114 Fatboy with stage 1, scream eagle filter, screaming eagle street cannon slip ons. The sound is well let’s say ... ordinary. I want to improve the sound, don’t want to lose performance and don’t want to wake the neighbours ... any suggestions on what could be a happy compromise for performance and nice sound? I am also going to go stage 2. Thanks.
Hey Matt , what’s up bro ? Got this same setup going into a 2020 Lowrider s , should be a fast bike I think ! Love your clips man n follow your work ! Still have till the first week of November to get my bike here in Australia 🇦🇺 so it’s killing me with the wait haha . Keep doing your thing and I’ll keep watching.
Matt, nice demonstration on the Stage 4 Fatboy! You definitely looked uncomfortable on it because of your height though. Keep doing those videos men! They are very insightful. #Laidlaw60Years.
My new 2018 Fatboy is currently in shop getting all the candy added to it...except for a seat that get me back and further away from the handlebars. The selection of aftermarket and Harley seats for the 2018 model are slim. Anyone know of a seat w backrest and Pillon that sits the rider further back and looks good and of course is comfortable? Hoping that the seat manufacturers are about to unleash a whole new selection of available seats.
Hi Mat that’s a cool bike all together, For was wondering about the swing arm saddle bag, do you have this bag for sale at your shop, and if you do can you ship it out to New Jersey please let me know ? since I like this bag but could find it any where , thanks
Matt Laidlaw hi Matt thanks so much for the reply, I appreciate the help, Today I put an order for the side bag Harley Davidson have on there website, I wasn’t sure if you could get the one on the bike since I could not find it any where. Thanks anyway, and the one I ordered would not work I would be definitely interested if you can get this one
Cool... Thanks for the reply. Think I'll go with them. Appreciate the response back. I was looking for a deep throaty sound with a little, but not insane volume. I looked at the Cannon's and Screaming Eagles but they were are volume then throaty to me.
Matt Laidlaw that sounds like a very political response. But it’s also a great topic for a future video. Give a review on quality of construction and sound to YOUR favorite 4 or 5 exhausts for the new M8.
I think the top five exhausts to do a sound review without getting into to many for the Softails are: Bassani, Vance & Hines, Cannons, Screaming Eagles and Rinehart. Also discuss the advantages of full system exhaust .vs slip-ons.
Sports Chi depends on your confidence level, fat boys are very stocky powerful bikes most new riders are uncomfortable on fat boys. I’d say for a new rider go with a sportster like a 48 or iron 1200 they’re good starter bikes and once you’re comfortable riding you can trade in for more powerful bike but truly best advice I can give that anyone can give really though is go test ride a bunch of bikes
I know it’s an old post and you’ve gotten a bike already but hand down get the bike you want first. Don’t mind those that tell you to go with a smaller less powerful one first, it’s complete bs. 99% first time bike owners regret getting a smaller one as their first and upgrade soon thereafter.
You should take a stage 4 street bob or stage 4 fatbob 114-117 and race one 😂 I really want a Harley but don’t know which one to go for and which is the fast I could get out off stage 4
Any bike that starts to lose it at high speed on a highways, regardless of the conditions, just is something to keep in mind. There is an argument of course to avoid 100mph+ on a far boy but it’s kind of fun to do stuff like this. My nephew just bought the new fat bob and I hope he doesn’t get this front end issue as I’d never be forgiven for recommending HD to him by my family. No other bikes lose it like this but again, commonsense isn’t common and road conditions can change quickly and if travelling full belt, it’s only your arse that knows that things are about to go south pretty quickly. I wish the RDS was on the Softails. Why does HD drag their feet with this obvious necessity.
Hey Matt I enjoy your videos a lot. I can relate to you because I’m also quite tall. I’m always struggling to find a good position. What’s your favorite bike, riding position wise? I have a Night Rod Special, I love it a lot but is there anything I can do to make it sit better?
Not to hot on that headlight triple clamp look. Overall not a bad looking bike. I like bar mounted wind screen to take some arm pressure off and they look cool. Like the Kevlar belt final drive.
I have been looking at the road rage for a while for my 2014 CVO Breakout. When I got my bike from the dealer it had the V&H Big Radius 2-2 on it so I left it. Sure they look nice but 94.21 HP and 114.76 torque on the dyno leaves a little bit left on the table. They are just a little to raspy for me and the RR sure looks sexy. Great vid as always Matt! Oh, going to the dealer show this year? Hope you do another vid for it
Good call dude, the V&H give sound but dont do much for power. I have the 18 breakout with the 117 stage 4 just like the fatty in the video. I run Freedom Performance Radical Radius on mine, deeper note and much better power. To give you and idea,,,,on a 23 degree celcius day with high humidity it makes 133 hp and 132 torque, on a cool crisp 5 degree morning it makes 140 hp and 139 torque. Like Matt says, the stage 4 milwalkees are seriously fast and the torque is awesome, until you ride one most dont quite get just how brutal they are compared to a stage 2 or 3 kit.
Awesome sound Matt, I like the way you blurred out the speedo, you said in a previous video about trying out the tall boy seat, did you ever try it? Because On the reverse camera you look too tall for that bike.
Got to ride a stage 4 m8 and it was fun.... I believe I would be more then happy with the same bike in stock forum... plenty of power and with the 110 limit just seems like it is a waste of time and money, but that's me.
Enjoyed the video Matt. The bike is badass and sounds great. Unfortunately your area in SoCal has freeways that suck with grooves and pot holes. Perhaps better infrastructure is the future.
The camera angles get really boring. Thumbs up for switching from helmet views to headlight views. That helps a small bit. What's missing are the side views. We REALLY want to see what your bikes look like from another vehicle while you're riding.
Hi Matt, always loves your videos! One suggestion: I guess most of the people care more about how they look on the bike than what they see from the bike, so maybe more third angle footage on the rider will be helpful for viewer to imagine how they look on the bike? Keep up the good work! Cheers!
I worry more about comfort and handling than what I look like to some ....edit.... other rider. At 6'4" I've been riding a 1984 Fxst since 1990 when I acquired it. I put the foot pegs about 4" in front
Of the frame. Got a set of bars that fit. Lay back a bit and let the wind and bars hold you up. Do a lot of scraping on mtn roads on that skinny tired old girl, but she is still fun.
After a couple rebuilds I have changed the gearing to the old 4 spd and put in an S&S V111. Can't stay with the 6 spuds on top, but I outrun most of them to 80 mph. Moves right along Sorry. .. forgot what thread I was in.
I appreciate your comment coming from an owner of a 2018 SOftail with this kit. Comment Pinned
Paul Roberts the top speed Change with stage 4?
yes, it sure does, with the big cam the rev limit changes with the tune, it powers to 6500, so with higher revs and alot more power it does go faster and get there heaps faster. If you look through responses to my reply to another comment here you will see the power figures.

Honestly just the title alone made me happy.
A work of art in every aspect. I so want one it hurts.
The gauges seem to fog up intermittently... might need to have that looked at! Lol
James Turner Yeah I don't understand why they hide the speedo. You can't get a ticket from a video on you tube as far as I know. Besides, you can still tell he's doing 90 😂
it's a known issue with stage 3 and 4's .....
Think they had a recall bulletin on that issue.
They do that on purpose so they won't get sued or taken to court, there's no evidence.
He is in LA though so I am sure the authorities would find a way to issue a ticket.
I come back to this video every so often, easily my favorite bike. The noise is incredible.

I think Laidlaws videos are the best motorcycle videos in TH-cam!

Freedom Rider power vision dyno tune. Much better.
Except it Voids your warranty. Not worth it.
Matt Laidlaw some dealers are flexible on that issue if they do the tuning.
Hey Matt, your implication is that it’s the tuner that voids the warranty and not the exhaust itself. A few months ago I bought a ’17 XL1200C, new, from my local dealer here in Lubbock Texas. Matt Laidlaw
Correct. 👍🏻
That thing is a beautiful monster! Love the paint job. The Fatboy is by far my favorite so far of all the new soft tails. 🤘🏻
Big congratulations on ! 60 ! years!
Proof you're doing it right!
That bike sounds incredible!

Interstate 10 has had such a beat down. Probably one of the scariest roads to ride.
Yea, it's bad.
GREAT VID MATT!

badass machine made it all the way to Alhambra and back in record time
Fast enough man ! Fast enough !
And, your right THAT baby deserves a better road. Great ride !

Hey are clutches in these normally have that 1/2 inch of slack I’ve noticed? Mine does and so does my buddies, you can waddle the lever bit before engaging
There should be a little free play. Yes. If it gets to be too much then you probably need an adjustment. The cable stretches especially when it’s new
My 08 Vulcan 2000 with power commander 5 and road burner pipes dynoed at 95hp and 130 ftlbs at the rear wheel at under 3000 rpm.
Ah man this makes me want this bike sooooo bad that thing rips!! I just rode my first street glide which was a stock 103 inch about a week ago and it was my first time on a harley and I gotta say for my riding experience it was enough power.

Does the stage 4 kit include upgrading the head gaskets and the cam? What about the cam chain tensioner?
Glad to see your using your helmet. Most Die heart Harley guys don’t
Is the foggy speedometer a new feature for 2018..:)
I have the 107 street bob and I want to do the 114 so bad, the bike is already pretty fast so I can’t imagine how it would feel.

Absolutely wonderful! That anniversary paintwork is awesome! Happy 60:th btw!
Keep em´coming sir!
Thank you!

Nice bike...Congrats 60 yrs 🎂🎂
im in the process of trading in my superglide custom on the 114 fatboy..is that thing fly by wire? ,,i dont see any throttle cables...
You mentioned the 2018 softail platform being too small for you.. Could you get a tallboy seat and take pics of you on the softails?
Hello, im 2 meters high and want to know which Harley would be the best? I like the Softail Slim a lot
I'm not a fan of Harley, but i do like this channel and i did subscribe. I guess there is nothing wrong with Harley, i just prefer my Indians.

Tuners can turn off the limiter.
Matt, great video as always brother. What are your thoughts on the Bassani road rage exhaust? Giving you Big thumbs up brother from Chicago. 👍
Can't help but notice the bad humidity issue in your speedo...
great job, Matt! thanks for sharing this experience!
Wow.! Looks like great fun!
Does the addition of the full non-stock exhaust system void the warranty?
Hey Matt, what is the price tag of that exhaust system parts and labor? I've got an '18 fatboy myself
Thanks.
Nice, luck seems to be on your side 5.0. Only stock older harleys were slow until we started messing with them.Ride Hard bro.
Owner just had all this work done and he's selling it ? aw that's gotta suck .
beautiful bike , sounds like a beast , goes fast as hell . wow!
Ernest Reimer What does that tell you?
Hey Mat, what sort of seat would you recommend for a taller rider? I have a SportGlide and would like a bit more room.
my dyna with jims 120 T_Man heads 142 FtLbs 140 HP will race anything?
Try Corbin
Awesomeness job as always Matt....👊🇺🇸
This bike reminds of the terminator 2 when Arnold jumps on the Harley and rumble away doing a side burnout
Best Harley in a movie EVER! That bike just sold for almost $500,000 recently.
Hi Mat that’s a cool bike all together, For was wondering about the swing arm saddle bag, do you have this bag for sale at your shop, and if you do can you ship it out to New Jersey please let me know ? since I like this bag but could find it any where , thanks
I believe it’s a genuine HD bag. I’m sure we can get it. I don’t know if we currently have one in stock.
What do you think about Bassani's for as sound compared to other pipes? I'm thinking the full exhaust pipes for my 2018 Deluxe.
I love them man. I would put them among the top 4-5 best sounding/performing exhausts
First brand new Harley was a Fatboy. Watched Terminator. I rocked that bike till 08
Hell yea. 🤘🏻
Matt ...what kind of gloves are you rocking
Congratulations on your 60th.
Thank you
Quick question. Do you think this bike is good for a new hider. I'm a man 6 feet tall?
Thanks a lot take care .
117 ci. Wow! That is a hot beast
You handled that thing like a BOSS and on those busted up hole ridden road none the less
That things badass. I love my ‘20 Fatboy.
Man I live in Milwaukee and never seen a bike like her! That thing sounds awesome! I’m interested!
I love the Bozzanie Road Rage Mega Power 2 on my 48...I went with the chrome
It’s Bassani
Would you say it’s as fast as a 600-750cc sport bikes because the vrods with mods can hang with 1000cc sport bikes
It’s hard to say. We are talking about a huge weight difference. Around 200lbs
You should take a stage 4 street bob or stage 4 fatbob 114-117 and race one 😂 I really want a Harley but don’t know which one to go for and which is the fast I could get out off stage 4
The Harley would probably do well until about 80 MPH then the sport bike would run away from it.
Can you put a Stage IV kit on a 2018 Fatbob?
Who is Harley-Davidson owned by?
How fast was you going 4:05 video sounds amazing Ya that bike is too small for tall people
Great video Matt, Congratulations on your 60th. How do you think a 117 twin cam would compare in power ? Ride safe. Cheers
Does it do a first gear power (no clutch) wheelie?
What is the web site of the laidlaw,s shop?
That is one ballsy sounding bike !
The engine sounds awesome that rub between gears sounds great thanks for the video Matt take care
I didnt see anywhere if this bike was sold...
Does the non epa pipes void the warranty?
Good Vídeo Matt .
Enjoyed the video Matt. The bike is badass and sounds great. Unfortunately your area in SoCal has freeways that suck with grooves and pot holes. Perhaps better infrastructure is the future.
Matt does the Bassani exhaust void the factory warranty?
Yes. Just ordered mine 😎
Love this bike! Looks freaking awesome!
Cheers!
Yea, I have really been focusing on getting that 3rd person angle. I just went out alone this day. Thank you for the suggestion.
Moves right along
Sorry. .. forgot what thread I was in.
