I worked a night shift last night....what better way then to relax on the couch watching a Matt Laidlaw video! As always señor your videos are the best informative videos! Next major upgrade I plan on taking my bike to your shop ...even if my local HD dealer is only ten minutes and you’re thirty minutes away. I appreciate your honesty and integrity (which is something I don’t see too often these days)....it goes a long way! LAIDLAW FOREVER FOREVER LAIDLAW LFFL!
I got the 2019 Fat Boy 107, soon to be upgraded to stage 1 and later to stage 2. The Fat Boy is a tribute to the atom bombs which finished WW2 in the Pacific. My late dad fought in that war and was a prisoner of war taken to Japan to work in the mines. He saw the mushroom cloud of the bomb that destroyed Nagasaki. My Fat Boy is also a tribute to my dad.
I was saving for a Suzuki m109r...but after seeing this bike I'll wait an extra year to buy this one...people say harleys are expensive but this bike is the kind of bike that after 20 years go by.. it will still look good and ride good
I know this is a 4-year old review, but it was EXCELLENT! I have been watching a lot of reviews of the Fat Boy 114, and I think this is the one for me. I live in South Florida where I think it would be a good riding choice for the reasons you've mentioned. Thank you!
I own a 2022 Black Fat Boy and it is a bad ass looking bike. I love it and I too think it's the best looking Softail Harley has ever made. Great review Matt, I watch all your videos, it's how I enjoy motorcycles and mostly Harley's when the weather is crummy here in Seattle which is way too often. Thanks Matt, hope to meet you some day at your Dealership.
Laidlaw's still the review to go for when you want to know about a bike. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. "For those of you that like to mount things to the handlebars.., you are wrong." Loved this comment!
Man, I love this video for all the explanation and history of the Fat Boy. You’re the first to explain where the name comes from. Especially like the drop tank history. Thanks.
I was never a fan of Fat Boys, and not very many stock bikes catch my eye. But this one has made me a fan. This is the coolest looking stock bike I've seen, and I usually go for older, more retro style bikes, spokes, not mags. But this one is perfect, and the futuristic, almost Art Deco coolness of it has my interest. And well, you know how we California boys are. Gotta have some style!
This new model puts my '12 Fat Boy Lo 103B in matte black and '14 Breakout to shame. And no, our solid wheels are not affected by wind or speed wobbles. Rock solid with the Old Lady on at any speed.
I’ve really come to appreciate being able to ride the back roads right out of my garage. In fact, I top the tank off at home cause gas stations aren’t generally on my route to any large degree. How blessed I am. I see a car - I wave.
Great Video Matt and that Industrial Gray Denim on the Fat Boy 114 is AMAZING! It takes a few hundred miles to get used to the handling....but once you do, it will carve up the twisties with the best of them and the 114 does have so much torque that its the perfect motor for that Fat Boy!
Great comparison video. I traded my 2015 Fat Boy for a new M8 107 Ultra Limited. If I had the money I would get the new Fat Boy as a second bike. Love the new style and ability to easily adjust preload. People complain about the handling of the Fat Boy but you get used to it. It just requires counter steering a little earlier for the turn than on other bikes.
for me your reviews are very good... really great I mean you really do not have to change them. I more or less know what to expect and that is the reason to watch your reviews.
Matt, we all truly appreciate the honesty. I know it is hard to believe but salesmen at HD dealerships will not explain ANY shortcomings in any model. Good work. Regards.
Matt: In MY humble opinion, your videos are never too long. I think you should not be concerned about the time of the video. Just keep doing what you do by just taking whatever time is necessary to get all of your thoughts out. Everything you say is very informative as far as I am concerned. About the 1-10 system in detail goes, I like it but I could take it or leave it because all of the other things you say are more important to me.
I own a 2019 FLFBS, and I must say this bike is freakin' awesome! The color is the custom 2 tone Scortched Orange and Black Denhim. Went down to Thunder Beach last weekend in Panama City, Fl and didn't see any of my color combination at all. Loved your review, keep up the great work!
I rode my 2018 FLFBS Anniversary Stage II to Thunder Beach from Jax FL. Loved the ride. Traded a 2018 Heritage for the Fat Boy at end of Jan put 2700 on it already and I don't get the complaints about handling. Matt/Nick great review, best seen to date.
I rode a fat boy .( free test ) around 25 years ago . Since then I have had 3 Harleys ( 1st one in 89 ) Just boughtva pristine 2001 Fat Boy all extra chromed up almost like new at 11000 total miles. Can't explain , but I can't ride it till March . So just have to keep looking at it. Driving me nuts , but something to look foreward to.
this is the last time I'll comment on how much I appreciate the syncing of the exhaust sound and the drop in the song since its just the standard now, so great!
I have been lucky enough to ride one with the 114 twice now. It's really a great ride. Don't let the fat tires stop you from ridding it. It's a great bike... I still love the wheels on the 18/19 models they look awesome... I believe the 2018 two tone anniversary Fatboy was one of the best looking Harley Davidson bikes ever...
Love the new fatboy, and softail line. These bikes keep the style but bring the platform up to and exceeding what is out there! The difference I noticed between the twin cam and the Milwaukee 8 (I road a 05 Road King Twin Cam 88) and now a 107 M8 in a road glide ultra, is that about the time the King ran out of steam, the M8 explodes, ! I'm a 300 pounder, and it will tear me off the seat, and lift my helmet if you rip it open at speed ! The M8 is so smooth I kind of missed the TC loping idle, until I recently enabled eitms and got a big grin the first time it came on, because the M8 rock and rolled like the old TC! Thanks for the great vids, Matt.
1. Wife: how long are you going to be watching that video? Me: 26 minutes and 33 seconds. Shut up. Leave me alone. 2. Guess I could live without the rating system. 3. Like the screen within a screen formate. 4. Nick - I'm impressed how articulate/well-spoken/intelligent the kid is. Good PR for Motorcycle mechanics. 👍
@@MattLaidlaw Dittos on the picture in picture feature, that's a solid way to get the flavor of the bike on the road and all the information you are sharing at the same time.
Matt, I definitely prefer this format as opposed to the number rating of bikes. I would much rather hear what comes from your raw instincts and impressions of each bike you test. As for me, I love what Harley-Davidson has done introducing the mono shock frame for the softail lineup. I wish the touring models would finally go to the mono frame as well someday. Thanks Matt.
Matt you are the only guy I know of on utube who can ride so many different Harley’s so your rating system is relevant and I really enjoy your work I would never be able to ride all those different bikes and can only afford one at a time I have always loved the look of the fat boy
The new Fatboy I just love the looks of it. It comes in second to my fav bike the Deluxe. I love the view of youbriding, coming from someone who is disabled makes me feel like I’m riding. Ty.
I own several really fast sport bikes, but bought a 96ci Heritage Softail Classic that was love at first sight. I can honestly say that the Heritage can be ridden like you stole it, even on twisty roads. Bought the bike with just over 15k miles on her and have had zero problems. The best part is all of the hidden and expensive upgrades (Screaming Eagle, etc) that the NON-Harley Dealer had no idea about, so the bike appraised for Alot More than I gave for her within 2 hours of the original owners trade-in. Very Happy with the purchase. P.S. just subscribed, been meaning to for awhile.
Just picked a 2019 FLFBS and my concerns about the fat tires and solid wheels were unneeded. I also have a 103 Street Glide which I have for long runs. Each has advantages over the other for different applications. I like both better then the other.
Just bought this exact bike (grey denim)two months ago and its Awesome!! Takes awhile to get use to but once you get that down it's all fun from there especially with the 114!! Great review man, keep it up!!
You totally made the right choice by doing away with the new rating system. I like the way you used to do it. On another note, how don’t you have way more subscribers? In my opinion, you have the best information on Harley Davidson hands down.
When I first saw the bike I did not like it but it's growing on me I like it Terrell classic Harley Davidson thanks for the video Matt and Nick take care guys
this guy was born to comment/review...good job, good points and history/educational points on the bike, etc....best bike they have4sure...I like his point on HD, that they should redesign with retro and a little futuristic combo...but, price still a bit high.
This is one of the Best looking Cruiser Motorcycle on the road that 🦅Harley Davidson has ever made, Love my Anniversary Edition 2018 Fat boy’s road presence which looks Dominant among other Cruiser motorcycles 💣 🔥
I have a 2015 stage 3 and very happy with it. I tested the new Milwaukee 8 and do like the whole concept. Keep the old one and save for a mew one seems to be the most sensible idea. Just cant imagine ever abandoning my 15 Fatboy it was my teenage dream, so get the younger brother 🙂
Hi guys. Thanks again for another great comparison video (including more recent ones - now 2023). You're the A-team at Laidlaw HD, no question. Wanted to as you both how you would distinguish the two bikes in terms of ease of maneuverability around town, navigating traffic, taking corners, etc. Not asking about comparison to other models, just between the pre-2018 Fat Boy and the 'new' M8 Fat Boy. (For context, I'm 5'6" / 29" inseam and about 135 lbs). Thanks !
The 2018 and newer version of the Fatboy requires a bit more “input” to initiate turns etc. once your muscle memory sets in nothing is a challenge in terms of maneuvering the motorcycle. You aren’t going to use it for tight left to right turn transitions though.
As always, an honest review. Hopefully we get a video of the 30th anniversary one soon even though it is mostly an appearance package, albeit a stunning one. These videos give me hope and inspiration, as my old bike has been parked for two years due to my health issues.
Great review as always Matt. Love that Industrial Gray and great input from Nick. Your doing a great job with your reviews Matt, all the right info for that guy looking for a new bike. Cheers
Once again my 2016 fatboy is the best year for the fatboy why because i believe its the best looking of all the fatboys and the most fun to ride. Mine has a racing cam with freedom exhaust you can hear me coming and it handles great and the seat is very comftorable with a combination of good looks and power you got it all
Have mine for 5 weeks now. Put on 1200kms (750mls) (rains too often). Still breaking in. 1000mls maintenance scheduled in one week. Got to make some miles. Great looking bike, actually best looking bike I ever owned. Totally different from my last bikes, Yam MT-01, Ducati Streetfighter, Yam MT-10. Just love it. First test ride at the dealer felt I really had to force it into corners, with my bike only very short turns cause reason to pay attention to my speed before corners. Guess it has something to do with the tire degradation. Not that I am speeding in any way. It is a bike to have relax rides on scenic routes. Like always great video guys. Also hoping to see you guys doing some rides on different routes on your own bikes.
Great review! A star front rotor the tank badging a great deal of attention to detail by the design team!!! Great job Matt and the Harley design team!!!
It’s a nice bike and even this very good video does it no justice. It’s got the nicest finish and look of any of the new Harley’s, I do miss the old rear fender
Great to watch as in my stable I have a 2012 103 fatboy, a 2018 107 duluxe, and a 2019 114 fatboy in the same finish as the one in the video. Love them all and it was interesting to hear the differences described between all of the bikes. I know that each of mine need to be ridden completely different from each other
Mr. Laidlaw, thank you for your quality videos. I own a Fatboy year model 2020. On this summer I rode one day when it was raining hard. The air intake flooded, and the bike stalled and then the motor died while I was riding 80 km/h. How can I prevent this next time?
i like the video. it is honest - flfbs looks much better in reality than in pictures. much more. handling is a compromise ... but who would care for handling. you get used to that sooner or later 👍 my neigbour (lady 60) says it is the nicest bike i have ever owned (this is probably #7 or so)... matt, dont stop! ✌️
I love the look of this bike, but a few things didn't fit my needs as well as some of the other models. I have a 114 Heritage and it fits me a bit better. I love the look of the rear fender on the older Fatboy better. Love the satin finish and that is what I loved about the old Fatboy Low. The new Softail frame is amazing.
Thanks Matt, for another great video. Personally glad you went back to the old format. I didn't feel I learned anything extra that you hadn't already covered with the points system and really appreciate your take on who it is best suited for. Also appreciate Nick's perspective as well.
I absolutely love my 2019 Ultra but I could seriously be tempted to buy a Fat Boy and just park it in the living room as it’s art at its best but my wife did bring up some concerns I should have such as I may not find the dog house too comfortable to sleep in LOL!!! Btw, if you get the 114, go all in and add the stage 2 right out of the gate. You won’t regret it, the sound and torque are amazing! And Matt, I agree, forget the rating system and stick to a simple short review. Thank you again for all the time you put into these reviews. Much appreciated.
Keeping my 07. Great long cruise and easy jump on short trip. Versatile ride that is easily outfitted for touring and stripped for day to day. My big shot longs seem to fit this design but not big on the cut back fender.
Great video. I like the categories of your ranking system. And I like the way you compare the model your testing to all the other Harley models instead of the numerical ranking.
Dude I have to say, I owe you an apology. Last year I bashed harley for pricing, performance, and reliability. However, after checking out the new fatboy and the specs around it, along with harley protection plans and the amazing customer service, I have to say kudos for HD and I apologize to you dude. Keep up the good work
Your videos are very informative and enjoyable to watch. This bike is absolutely fantastic looking! If I lived in CALI you would be the dealer I would go see!
Very informative! Don't worry I never got bored in your video. Really love all your episodes. Matt what is difference between 2019 and 2018 Fatboy w/ the same 114?
Hi Matt, thanks for your informative comments. How does the 240 back tyre affect performance. I’ve always been hesitant to recommend it because of my ride experience with the breakout. It’s a fun bike to ride but you definitely have to compromise here in the Uk! Our roads are insane! We have a lot of twisty roads, very narrow. Can I confidently sell the new Fatboy in the Uk. We don’t have you’re easy roads! Appreciate your comments.
It’s what you’d expect. It takes a little more time and effort to negotiate the turns. It can do it but won’t be as fun and practical as a narrow tire bike. It’s more of a Fat, drag bike that makes a statement.
I just traded up my Fat Boy last year and now have an UC. While it is true a cross wind will not "blow you over", there really is an effect on handling in strong winds with a solid front rim, vs spoked or mag wheels. It's not bad enough to cause to to go off the road, but it will disrupt good handling of the bike. Just be aware.
I know people knock the handling on these, but I felt instantly comfortable on one when I jumped on it at a demo day. With the exception of the Fat Bob and Road King Special which were noticeably better, I felt this was one of the best handling bikes I rode that day.
I dig this bike but I'm particularly bothered by the mix of satin parts with chrome parts ; specifically the satin seat brackets with chrome turn signals. What were they thinking 💭?
Hi Matt, I have a question, it's a problem with my 3 week old 2022 Fat Boy. When I stop the bike I hear a clunk coming from the front of the bike. I've seen videos on TH-cam that this clunk comes from the front disc brake, you can actually move it with your hands. The thing is not all of these floating disc brakes do this on the new bikes. The video goes on to say he took it to the dealer and they said it's not a problem, that's the way it it, it will make a clunk sound when stopping, huh? Matt, I was hoping I could get your thoughts on this, I hope Harley steps up to the plate and acknowledges this is a problem and fixes it. Your thoughts? Thank you Matt, really love your videos.
It’s hard to say without actually seeing the bike do it in person but yes, the front brakes can make a bit of a clamp, “clunk” sound when they are engaged. Usually this is heard at slower speeds. I haven’t had someone ever be bothered by it so maybe what you’re experiencing is different.
I know you said the solid disc wheel trouble in the wind is BS. I'm not really sure of that. My '05 VRod handled very poorly in the wind. Drove me nuts. 90mph was the limit before instability ruled...forward controls lifted my size 14 feet off the pegs and the front end seemed pretty squirrely. I loved that bike anyway despite its terrible resale value. It was definitely not an 80mph+ machine. It just got too wiggly. My R1 feels stable at 150mph. I'm not sure if I should blame it on solid wheels or not.
Hi Matt the Satin Chrome Finish is also on my 2017 Harley Davidson V-Rod Muscle heat shields on the exhausts I have Vance and Hines exhausts fitted which are also seem to have this satin chrome finish? Great video's! Keep them coming!
I blame the terminator for my fascination and love of Harley Davidson's. It's the sound that gets me everytime. Music to my ears

I'm a bagger guy these days ...but I think the Motor Company did a great job on this
As always, an honest review. Hopefully we get a video of the 30th anniversary one soon even though it is mostly an appearance package, albeit a stunning one.
These videos give me hope and inspiration, as my old bike has been parked for two years due to my health issues.
I like your honesty when describe the bikes characteristics.
By the way, you make the best motorcycle review videos on the internet. Period. If I go to LA, I'll visit your dealership
Sharp presentation with more focus on function!!! I enjoyed the new format and pace!!! Youth impression during the vid was quality in presentation!!!😎
Great review as always Matt. Love that Industrial Gray and great input from Nick. Your doing a great job with your reviews Matt, all the right info for that guy looking for a new bike. Cheers
The Fat Boy rocks. Always has, always will.
Once again my 2016 fatboy is the best year for the fatboy why because i believe its the best looking of all the fatboys and the most fun to ride. Mine has a racing cam with freedom exhaust you can hear me coming and it handles great and the seat is very comftorable with a combination of good looks and power you got it all
Aside from the odd looking headlight, I love the new fatboy. The polish on the chrome is excellent and when I sat on one it was very comfortable.
Another super review Matt. Nobody does it better. Cheers from Australia 👍
Your videos are awesome. Learning a lot as a newbie to Harley. Keep it up!
Great review! A star front rotor the tank badging a great deal of attention to detail by the design team!!! Great job Matt and the Harley design team!!!
Thanks! Yea, H-D had a lot of good detail on here
It’s a nice bike and even this very good video does it no justice.
Thank you !
Yes, the Icon! 🙌
Has been my fav since its inception, love it's lines from any angle, just a beautiful cruiser. Cheers ?
@9:22 what jacket are you wearing? I know it's a custom patch jacket but what brand is that? Also what brand are those white gloves?
Thanks Matt, for another great video. Personally glad you went back to the old format. I didn't feel I learned anything extra that you hadn't already covered with the points system and really appreciate your take on who it is best suited for. Also appreciate Nick's perspective as well.
Hey Matt I’m going to be visiting California in August and I was wondering if you rent motorcycles?
Still love my 2016 FatBoy S...
Congrats Matt on 70k subs! 100k subs lets go!!! 😎
Hell yea!
Way to go Matt and so glad you don’t sell out to the trinkets and bauble makers 👍🍺👍🍺🍺🍺
Best review of this bike I've seen
Getting one in the next couple weeks cant wait 😁
I do like the redesign of the fat boy, but I still like the classic styling of the old one more. I think i'll keep my 117 fat boy s.
Great video. I like the categories of your ranking system. And I like the way you compare the model your testing to all the other Harley models instead of the numerical ranking.
Always loved this model from Harley. Definitely gonna be my 3rd Harley in the stable for sure. Great video Matt. Thanks again and ride safe
Just bought a 2019 Fatboy in Rawhide. Can’t wait to pick it up Thursday😃
PlanVision Corp no difference. Only color options.
Watching you lane split is crazy !
Laidlaw Rocks !!! Now that, is a beautiful Harley Davidson Dealership" !!!
Absolutely Love those Harley Davidson "Beefy" Motorcycles.
Thanks brother.

Great Videos Matt. Keep them coming. Hope I can visit your dealership someday !👍
You make the best vids, always informative, keep up the great work bro👍
THANKS FOR THIS DEEP PREVIEW great job is worth it to upgrade to stage 4 im there on the fence right now
I know you said the solid disc wheel trouble in the wind is BS.
