[TAS] Super Smash Bros. Brawl - The Subspace Emissary: 100% Speedrun in

So, this has been a project I've been working on for the last eight months or so (Would've been shorter if I didn't have to work at a job), in which I show what a 100% completion speedrun of The Subspace Emissary would look like if human limitations weren't a factor. It features a number of new sections in comparison to the any% TAS, alongside new optimizations to preexisting rooms that can be directly compared.
Naturally, I kinda stole my own thunder right at the very end after I discovered a very useful glitch that sort of makes autoscrollers disappear, that could have been applied to a number of locations. Oh well!
While I was encoding the video, I accidentally moved the emulator window around during the start of The Forest. That caused the video to glitch a bit, so I rerecorded that particular section to overlay a clean version. As it turns out, Premiere Pro lied to me about the exact video placement, as there's now a few frames of black screen right before the level starts, making it seem as if the entire thing is spliced. Technically, it is, but I assure you, the input file plays from beginning to end, no cheats or splices or anything needed.

besides this TAS being really impressive - the writeup linked is a really interesting read too, sick work dude
i thought TAS were always split.. woww i guess not?
Bombs? Better speedrunning time? You want it? It’s yours my friend, as long as you have enough DI.
I'm sorry, my friend, but I can't give credit. Come back when you're a little... Mmmmmm mmmm... Better!

Oh, these turnips aren't homegrown, they were made in a factory.
A bomb factory.
They're bombs.
They were made in the subspace bomb factory
This run was incredible. It's insane to me how with perfect RNG, and precise inputs, the game is almost trivialized, even on the hardest difficulty.
Actually, this would take longer on lower difficulties, since he uses INSANE damage boosting throughout the entire run, which is more effective on the hardest difficulty
@@hotramen5936Thanks for the info on that!
@@hotramen5936ge apparently just doesn't die on the highest amount of damage TAS is insane
40:08 the fact that this was the optimal thing to do here makes me so happy
27:31 It makes me unreasonably happy that character storage was used in this run! So glad that a glitch I documented ended up helping :D Amazing work!
How does it work?
@@cullenhutchison6528 if you go frame by frame at 27:31, you can see that the level selector moves to The Lake before moving back to The Ruins (and pressing A on the same frame). This brings up the difficulty select which you don't see on any other level, which confirms you got the glitch. This skips the character selection screen for this level, meaning that the characters stored in memory (aka the characters from the previous level) are used for The Ruins! The catch is that this glitch can only be used on levels which have character select screens in the map, and not cutscenes (as you can't skip the cutscenes entirely and they set the characters once you're in the level)
@@james5427 Thanks, that's cool!
@@james5427 Y'know, I'd wondered why Charizard was getting beat up by someone other than Lucas or the trainer. "Did I misremember, and it was actually just a cutscene like with Ivysaur?"
Didn't even occur to me that The Boys weren't supposed to be there at all, lmao.
1:11:07 HOW ARE THERE ENOUGH FRAMES OF HITSTOP TO SDI IN A FULL CIRCLE?!

I love that this TAS eases you into all the bob-omb-explosion-stuff it does in the ending by introducing it throughout the play, so by the time you reach the Great Maze you know what's happening.
Peach is 999% done with this game
This is still the BEST Super Smash Bros adventure mode of all franchise to this day. Sad they can't redo something similar to this no more. The SSBU has its fun quirks, but still can't compare to Subspace Emissary. It's basically a storyline of its own how all characters comes together. Of course a few secret ones too. Missed this Subspace Emissary
Imagine a subspace emissary with al the characters we have now...
Smash just became all about the roaster size. It really killed the creativity and charm of the series
I think the biggest shame is that this huge labor of love for the series is trapped on arguably the worst entry (mechanically, at least) in the franchise. Sure, no one could blame you for wanting to go back and play subspace, but I'm pretty sure you end up on a list somewhere if you suggest playing "the one with tripping in it" to the smash community.
@@picklejoedeanbobthe charm of the series hasnt really been lost its just been expanded. trying to fit 80+ characters into a story mode that you can beat in a weekend isn’t feasible lmao
@@yggdrasilsaltar It would feel bloated and insanely rushed if you tried. Like everything happened for the sole sake of showing off all the money they burned on IPs rather than having an actual plot. Which is arguably worse.
the work of art has finally been released. now imagine if you could somehow do something about those autoscrolling sections...
One day, sometime in the future, a young boy who loved SSBB will create a (homebrew) mod for the game, allowing for autoscroll sections to be done quickly.
@@Not_interestEd-this joke is a reference to the description of the video
Hopefully not all of them. I love watching the style demos that it allows
As somebody who has done Intense Subspace Hitless before, this run is phenomenally made and so creative. Props to you dude, this was a joy to watch.

You can instantly tell the menu was animated because the cursor isn't vibrating at the speed of light.
It was actually recorded in-emulator (With upscaled textures), in which I tried moving the cursor more naturally.
Oh, so it wasn't just that my hands were incredibly shaky.
@@theendersmirk5851 or perhaps you're just bad. We all know the better at smash you are the less you shake the Wii-mote.

40:08 What a way to end the level.
THE ABSOLUTE FLEX OF KNOWLEDGE IS INSANE AT 5:49
My favourite part has to be 35:26. There's just something darkly funny about both characters walking off screen, then Diddy instantly dying with the sound of Fox' gun.
Of Fox and Diddy Kongs
Fox deadass executed Diddy off screen cuz he knows this game is rated E.
I love how a third of the run is just Peach being an unstoppable force of nature
This entire run feels like a long TerminalMontage video and I love it
From what I hear, TerminalMontage bases most of his videos off of speedruns (such as Super Metroid, hinted at her arm-pumping a lot)
Who would win Speedrun Mario or Subspace Peach?
The Great Maze is what happens when the Speed Demon possesses Peach.
@@iaxacs3801 i'd answer that, but first we need to talk about parallel universes

The kind of speed sonic is jealous of
Seeing peach (or literally anyone) walk through the doors calmly right after doing the most insane speed strats ever and clipping through walls is so funny to me 😭
You immediately had my attention when Peach started single handedly committing several dozen war crimes in the span of 20 seconds.
Anytime Meta Knight is on the screen I can't stop cracking up. Insane run. The movement and RNG manipulation is so satisfying to watch
Bro forgot to exist 💀
Yeah, and I know it's largely rng manipulation when he stops to taunt but it's funny how Meta just stops to yell "Come." before vanishing off the plane so quickly nobody could hope to follow him.
"Come"
i don't think enough people truly understand how insane this run is. they had to not only rng manipulate every single bomb but also every sticker drop for the benefits for them, but also have to manipulate enemy patterns, cpu player patterns, and boss patterns, all while using frame perfect glitches to actually survive the speeds at which you're going and skip unnecessary fights
TAS my friend makes it not that insane
@@danielfonville1840this TAS run took him 8 months to make, considering that he had to go frame by frame on this hour long run while also having to manipulate rng with the bombs and sticker bonuses, I'd say that's still insane dedication and the final product was equally as good
What do the stickers do it's been a while since I played it?

For so much of this, I imagine the characters yelling, "WHEEEEEEEEEEEE".
Seeing a Brawl TAS is so sick. Good stuff.
I swear to god, these Subspace Emissary runs just get more and more insane as they go.
The Ruins level (27:33) tripped me out for a second on why you were playing as Yoshi. I clicked on the link in the description and didn't know that the Character Storage glitch was a thing in this game

To be fair, that turnip is awfully funny looking…
The subspace emissary was the best thing they ever did for smash

Loved this mode as a kid, spent hours on it, oddly fun seeing it torn to shreds like this. Great job!

40:52
Meta Knight: Fight- *Gets hit by shell he threw*
I am currently starting and I'm laughing my ass off at Peach at 1:18
i love runs like this because i think "wow, if you had one billion people playing subspace emissary from the beginning of the universe until now, the percentage probability of one of those runs being this run is likely still not a humanly comprehensible number"
Peach having bombs that send you faster than intergalactic space travel is official now.
At first I was thinking "I wonder how he calculated whether Peach or Zelda was the faster choice at the start". Didn't take long to figure out why...
Walls are merely a suggestion
1:02:46 Peach constantly pulling out bombs to blow herself up is hilarious
Peach: Mario please you must rescue me!
Also peach: 1:10
Perhaps the real reason why Peach always gets kidnapped by Bowser is because she knows that if she were to ever unleash even a fraction of her speedrunning powers, Bowser would be wiped from having ever existed in the first place. She may be powerful, but she's also merciful.
@@royal_kim1154So she gets kidnapped for fun?
As a big Brawl fan, I want to thank you for creating this TAS. It's action-packed, awesome, and really fast! I had a smile on my face the whole run, and I am very happy! This TAS easily is one of my favourites now. Thank you!
the quick little moment with the Roader at 14:19 plays out like a god damn looney toon, i keep rewatching that part specifically and laughing at how Marth looks like he's getting spooked like this is a scooby doo bit or something
1:10:56 to 1:11:02 ... that's how long this dude spent on the boss battle. Barely over 5 seconds. I've seen crazy speedruns before but this... this has made me speechless.

I never thought a speedrun of Subspace Emissary would be like but I just came across this speedrun which I always thought it would be. Insane.
I've never seen game breaking of this magnitude since Mario 64...and that game got broke pretty badly over the years.

Fun super mario fact of the day: this tas is cool
This is an impressive TAS to watch all the rng line up perfectly.
Been waiting for this for years! ❤
It’s kinda crazy how much effort gets put into TASes like this
Subspace Emissary 100% TAS drinking game. Take a shot whenever:
- A door is entered offscreen
- Camera manip is used to despawn enemies
- A Bob-omb drops from a random source
- The player dies in between the area being completed and the game transitioning to the next area
- A death plane is circumvented or a clip saves time
Don't do it, you have so much to live for!
Does sound very fun ngl

Every time you release one of these subspace TASes it's basically the best TAS I've ever seen in my life up until that point, and this was no exception. It was pure mayhem start to finish.
Thanks for including that first 30 seconds lol, mad throwback
And incredible tas run, extremely entertaining and cool!
my favorite aspect of this is how the core mechanic of the game (knockback/launching) is ultimately the most important and useful tool to this speedrun. it feels oddly fitting. it really is a smash bros speedrun, huh? :>
