  • My first attempt and making pigeons do the deed. I've learned a lot this month, mostly how not to do it. Breeding racing pigeons is actually harder than it sounds, especially when they're all yearlings. Hopefully this pigeon video will bring you almost up to date with where we are with the birds. You're doing fine mate, they'll sort themselves out eventually, you're pairing up a loft full of yearlings, it's typical to struggle, it's their first time too!
As other said, letting them out in pairs helps immensely.
Good luck, you remind me of myself starting out, I read all I could and watched whatever VHS videos I could find. Didn't have TH-cam then unfortunately for me.
One piece of advice ill pass on is to be consistent, with whatever you do. The basket sorts out pigeons better than any fancier ever can, the most important qualities of a pigeon can't be seen or felt, it's their brain and heart that matters more than anything.
I would take a youngster frome every pair, and not put too much store on a a young birds first seasons performances, some of the best yearlings and older birds we've raced did nothing special as youngsters, and some great young birds never went on to be good old birds.
Many great pigeons have come from less fancied pairings.
As I've mentioned before let me know if you'd like some young birds, I'd like to help you along. Ours are middle and distance birds.
    Good luck with the hatchlings

You make some good videos. Very entertaining. I've kept racing pigeons for years, & watching your channel reminds me of how it was back in the day.. I like your enthusiasm. You're doing a great job!

Great job Dan, all a learning process, my dad is my teacher so i'm pretty blessed in that sense but he lets me work away as you learn as you go.... in terms of pairing birds up sometimes we have put the cock and hen in the aviary and left them for the day and you could have to do this for a few days and they eventually pair up. if you want certain birds to pair together.
but as john mentioned yearling can be a nightmare at times. hope it works out for you dan 🤞👍

Thanks. Yeah there were only really 2 or 3 pairs I was really keen to put together. The rest can just 'have at it'. Totaly agree on the best way to learn. If I fail at something it's more of an incentive to work out why, rather than be overly reliant on doing as other people say then not understanding or questioning the reasoning.

Great video. That is one of the problems in breeding togheter, among others like fighting and broken eggs. Also the problem is that you are never 100% sure of the father. You can always do DNA testing, but it is expensive. I do individual cages. It is more work but it is a more control breeding process. Good luck

Great video as usual, had me laughing out loud.
Keeping your birds locked in their boxes for a few days and letting them out in pairs will stop them 'spoiling'
It's hard work for a few days, if you have time to do it, but it does get them use to their boxes and increases the chance of fertile eggs.
Having to go to work is a bugger 😉🤣

I think you’ll notice, the birds don’t like the bottom box’s , I never had boxes below a meter from the floor…. The bigger the box the better…. Ventilation is key for the birds health, has you now know, pigeons can attract a lot of nasty little bastards….
